PRODUCTION

“AIMING HIGH FOR 50 YEARS”Dear Parents,

This will be the last newsletter for the term which is coming to a speedy close on Friday 21st September.

This term has been an exceptionally busy term with the 50th

birthday celebrations, the Japanese Cultural

Experience Tour and the School Self Evaluation/Review as extra challenges in what is an already busy

term.

Today is the last day for Chris Finighan who will be on Leave commencing Monday 17th

September; I

will be attending the Trans-Tasman Conference being held in Melbourne commencing 19th

September

until and including 21st September. Sue Fraser and Cameron Agars will be the teachers in charge during

this time.

HEPS 50TH

BIRTHDAY FETE birthday

The fete is fast approaching as you know, Saturday 17th

November. Our fete

committee is working fast and furious to make it a success but we need everyone

to do their part as well. I know that at this time we ask you to regularly put your

hands in your pockets but it is for the good of our school which is ultimately for

resources to support our students’ learning. We have designated three special

‘dress’ days in support of collecting items for a stall:

Friday 21st September: Footy/Sport teams when you bring along something for

Tombola

Friday 19th

October: Crazy Hair Day when you bring along something for the Mystery Bags.

Friday 2nd

November: Fashion on the Fields when you bring along something for the Grocery Stall.

3D SCULPTURED HOUSE KEYS

Take the time to look at the attachment displaying the various Footy Logo keys selling at $10.00.

These will make great birthday presents or Christmas presents for the many footy fanatics out there.

On fete day you can have the keys cut for $2.50 at the key cutting stall or you can just go to a key

cutter of your choice. The order form is attached so simply send back to school so that we can place

your request.

GRADE TWO SLEEPOVER

Our grade two children are super excited about their sleep over tonight; this is an annual event

and the students love sharing dinner together, walking the grounds in search of possums,

playing interactive games, watching a fun loving movie and the highlight!..........Being

mesmerized by Ric the Magician. Thank you to all our staff who give up their own beds to be

with our students throughout this social event.

BON VOYAGE

Farewell to Mrs Christine Finighan as she takes up her leave on Monday 17th September;

Chris will be travelling abroad and we wish her and her husband a wonderful time away

together. Chris returns on Monday 8th October.

Farewell to Mrs Rosie Lumsden who will be enjoying time and travel with her family

during the first two weeks of next term. We wish them a safe and happy time together.

PLANNING WEEK

All teaching staff have been provided a day throughout this or next week to plan effectively in their teams for term

4. This is valuable professional time together to ensure learning intent is consistent throughout the classes and that

relevant excursions and incursions are planned and organized in plenty of time.

REMINDERS

End of Term: Our students will be allowed to commence their term break on Friday 21st September at

2.30pm after the ‘farewell’ assembly at the front of the school.

Remember we have wonderful mementos of our 50th

Birthday:

Student towels: $12.00 a tea towel or 2 for $20.00

’50 Years of Aiming High’ pens at $5.00

Create a paver to be laid in the 50th

Birthday Garden for $27.00

Term Four commences on Monday 8th October and it will be a ‘SunSmart’ Term, so put on hats and slop on sun

factor.

I wish to thank each and every one of your contribution to a dynamic term here at HEPS; we have had some

wonderful celebrations, activities and functions and these have been highly successful because of your positive

support. Thank you to the hard working staff for their continued commitment and love of our students and the

wonderful students who smile and contribute to HEPS being a great place in which to teach and learn!

Wishing you all a safe and happy time together and please come back refreshed and ready for another productive

term.

Remember if you use the school grounds and witness inappropriate behaviors ring the police immediately. It

would be ideal to come back to a school intact and ready for a constructive term of learning.

Kind regards,

Kitty Allard.

Principal.

New Asthma Management Guidelines The Asthma Foundation of Victoria advises that spacers should always be used when administering

reliever “puffer” medication because:

. Using a Spacer with a “puffer” ensures that more medication reaches the airways.

. Spacers are much easier for children to use than a “puffer” alone and they allow school staff to

help students during an asthma attack, often in an emergency situation.

. Spacers are an essential part of the Asthma First Aid procedure that Victorian schools are

instructed to follow.

Further, The Asthma Foundation advises that Asthma first aid kits should only ever be used as a

back-up for when a student with asthma does not have their own spacer available, or if it is a first

asthma attack or the cause of breathing difficulty is unknown.

The Asthma Foundation of Victoria new policy of single use spacers means that the schools will

no longer be able to wash, sterilise and re-use spacers and face masks from the asthma emergency

kits when assisting students with asthma symptoms.

Those families who have children who have been diagnosed with Asthma please ensure that

their children have their medication at school and that they also have their own spacer.

A complete set of the guidelines and recommendations from the Asthma Foundation are attached

to this newsletter.

SPORTS UPDATE: Looking forward to the Spring weather and hoping for lots of sunshine in Term 4!

Hooptime is a basketball competition involving 24 grade 5/6 students on Wednesday, 12th

September at Maroondah Indoor Sports stadium. Mr Agars, myself and a number of

helpful parents assisted with coaching and scoring throughout the day. There were 4 other

local schools competing (Ringwood North, Marlborough, Kalinda and Mullum) and it was

a wonderful experience for all our HEPS students. The “ALL STARS” boys team made

the grand final, but were beaten by a very strong Ringwood North PS team. HEPS

“HEAT” made the semi final in the Future Stars competition and HEPS “HUSTLERS” were eliminated in the

consolation final for the Future Stars also. A fantastic effort by everyone involved for our first time in “Hooptime”.

Thankyou to Mr. Agars for his expert coaching and to Melissa Philp for coaching and scoring and all your

assistance leading up to the day. Thankyou also to Carolyn Timmer and Avril Summers for scoring and all those

parents who came along to support and assist our students. Lovely to see Miss Allard there cheering on our HEPS

teams. A big thankyou also to Heathmont College for providing their school bus and a driver to transport our

HEPS students to this event. Thankyou to Avril Summers for taking home all the basketball tops to wash.

Zone trials for athletics will be held on Thursday, 10th

October at Proclamation Park, Sylvia Grove, Ringwood

(Ringwood track). HEPS has 5 students competing – Alec Norris (10 yr Discus and Shotput), Montana Nunis (10

yr Triple Jump), Xavier Phillips (11 yr High Jump), Jarrod Guest (11 yr Discus) and Jera Staley (12 yr Shotput).

Parents will need to organise their own transport for their child to this event as I will not be attending. Wishing you

the best of luck in your endeavours. Don’t forget to keep practising in the holidays!

Middle/Senior House Athletics will be held on Thursday, November 29th

(to be confirmed) at Croydon track

involving all grade 3-6 HEPS students. Each child will compete in discus, shotput, high jump, long jump, sprints,

long distance run and shuttle relay. It’s a fun day, especially if the weather is kind to us and every student has the

opportunity to compete in each activity and obtain points for their house. The winning house will be awarded the

House shield at the conclusion of the day. Individual awards will also be presented to age group champions.

Junior House Athletics will take place on Tuesday, October 23rd

. Parent helpers are welcome and encouraged to

assist. Talk to Mrs Hassan (Mondays and Tuesdays) asap if you are keen to help out. New students will be

allocated a house asap.

Soccer Tournament involving all grade 5/6s will take place on Thursday, November 8th

at HE Parker Reserve.

HEPS will be competing against Marlborough PS. There is no cost for this event and all students will walk to the

event with their teachers.

Lacrosse Tournament was a very popular activity last year with the grade 5/6s and will be offered again this year

at Scoresby Park on Friday, 16th

November (to be confirmed). There will be a cost involved for this event and

further information will be provided closer to the date.

Coles Sports Vouchers should have all been collected by now as final tallies are being done. Thankyou so much to

everyone who contributed to our tally of vouchers over the past few months.

I hope everyone enjoys the September holidays. My family is heading to Thailand and I will be taking a couple of

weeks long service leave early in term 4. Can’t wait! Looking forward to a very active last term. The weather is

improving so your training should be getting easier, especially with the sun now rising a little earlier in the morning

and the daylight lasting a little longer in the afternoons. Good luck!

Rosie Lumsden PE/Sports Coordinator.

LIBRARY NEWS – September 2012 PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE The PRC has now finished and what an amazing effort our students made this year. 262 students completed the Challenge and in total read 9,230 books! Wow! What an incredible achievement. I am so proud of each and every one of you for your persistence and dedication. Don’t forget, just because the Challenge has finished doesn’t mean you stop reading. Well done. LITERACY/NUMERACY DAY

On Thursday 6 September HEPS celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week with a whole day of activities. Students worked in their classrooms on our Reach for the Stars numeracy activity for the first hour. We then all met in the gym to listen to our guest speaker, popular children’s author Sophie Laguna. Sophie was inspirational and the students were enthralled with her stories. After recess we broke up into multi-age groups and participated in activities relating to the Children’s Book Council shortlisted books for the year, which were read during the session. Activities included decoding Viking runes, creating thylacines in 3D picture form, making “hug” bracelets, flower posters, 3D cats and creating our own monsters. It was wonderful to see the students working together, especially the older students helping the younger ones with their activities. The day was a great success and fun was had by all. HEPS WRITE YOUR OWN BOOK COMPETITION A big thank you to all those students who worked very hard to create a picture story book called “Reading is Magic”. I have read through all the entries and winners will be announced at assembly on Friday. Well done to all the students who submitted an entry. I have had a ball reading through your amazing picture story books and now I really do believe that “Reading is Magic”. Sue Austin Library

Living Well with Asthma: Advice for Parents and Carers 1 in 10 people in Australia have asthma, and people with asthma often rate their health a lot worse and report a poorer quality of

life than the general population. Children and adolescents with current asthma are more likely to miss days of school/preschool due

to asthma and a key aspect of improving quality of life is ensuring that your child or teenager is are able to engage fully in physical

activity and social aspects of life and learning.

Good asthma control is:

Symptom free during the day and during physical exercise, reducing the need for reliever medication

Symptom free at night, allowing for a good night’s rest

Rarely experiencing asthma attacks or exacerbations

Preventer medication and devices are being used correctly and as prescribed (eg. on a daily basis)

Having an asthma action plan to follow, both for the school/preschool and at home, and promptly acting on the plan

when asthma symptoms occur

Asthma symptoms are not a normal aspect of life and should be taken seriously. Children and teenagers with poor asthma control

should be encouraged to seek assistance, and should visit their GP or respiratory physician for an asthma review as soon as

possible.

Spacer Use in Schools/Preschools: Advice for Parents & Carers As of the 1

st July 2012, schools and preschools in Victoria will be implementing a new policy in regards to single person spacer

use.

This means that schools and preschools will no longer be able to wash, sterilise and re-use spacers and face masks from their

asthma emergency kits when assisting students and children with asthma symptoms.

Spacers should always be used when administering reliever ‘puffer’ medication because:

Using a spacer with a ‘puffer’ ensures that more medication reaches the airways

Spacers are much easier for children to use than a ‘puffer’ alone, and allows school and preschool staff to help students/children during an asthma attack, often in an emergency situation

Spacers are an essential part of the Asthma First Aid procedure that Victorian schools/preschools are instructed to follow

Asthma first aid kits should only ever be used as a back-up for when a child with asthma does not have their own spacer available, or if it is a first asthma attack or the cause of breathing difficulty is unknown. Your child’s school/preschool may implement a policy where parents/carers are responsible for the cost of the spacer if one must be used from the asthma emergency kit. Even if your child has mild asthma, it is essential that their medication and spacer (and a compatible face mask if under 5 years old)

is always available to school/preschool staff. To ensure that a spacer is not left at home, we would recommend that parents/carers

purchase a second spacer for their child to have with them at school/preschool at all times if possible.

For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected]
