AIM HIGH @ HEPS Dear Parents,
TERM FOUR BEGINS – WELCOME BACK!
Hello and welcome back to all of us! It was great to return to our school
which continued to provide quality programs and experiences over the
last weeks in term three. I have heard about the successful camps, a
great Literacy Day, all inclusive Junior Athletics, and the many successful excursions and extracurricular
activities and appreciate the great leadership by Mrs Sue Fraser and Mr Cameron Agars and the
sensational team at HEPS! It’s reassuring to know that the school continues to AIM HIGH when we are
away. I trust everyone was able to enjoy the two week break and now we are back on track with an
exciting and busy term four. Please find attached the Term Four Planner and have this readily available
to keep you abreast of all the activities organised. The Grade 6 Production is imminent with the grade 6
team perfecting their rehearsals in readiness for the evening presentations on Thursday 24th
and Friday
25th
October. Then there’s the HEPS Carnival…..something that many of you, particularly the fete team
have been working on over an extensive period of time. Saturday 9th
November promises to be the ‘fete
of fetes’ keep this date free so you can reap the benefits of a great community day of fun, food and
entertainment as well as a spectacular closure at 8.15pm with the fireworks.
Thank you to all those who have asked about my trip, I had a wonderful time overseas, my visit to
London, Paris, Tuscany, Umbria and the Almalfi coast as well as parts of the Netherlands, St Petersburg
and Moscow was absolutely fabulous. The weather was superb, scenery spectacular and everyday
presented enriching experiences. I loved every moment but can also confidently express that Melbourne,
Australia is a wonderful part of the world in which to live.
STAFF
Mrs Sue Austin will commence Long Service Leave on Monday 21st October until
18th
November; she has organised competent people to continue her role in the
library and associated programs during this time.
Mrs Janine Sutton is still recuperating from an injury caused when she slipped in the school grounds. We
hope to see her back in the art room sometime in November.
Mrs Anne Dunlop is recuperating from surgery and we will see her back in the Cottage when she has
been given the ‘all clear’ from her doctor.
We welcome Maria Matsumoto, our new intern who has been supporting the LOTE
program since the commencement of this term. She has slipped into the role in a natural
and easy manner and we appreciate her commitment to the Japanese program.
TRANSITION
Students will continue to experience movement to other classes this term with our goal that our students
become more familiar with expectations for the following year as well as teachers organising balanced
classes for 2014. We expect the students to move to the class level they may be in 2014 throughout
October and November. I’m sure your children will share the excitement of this process with you as it
occurs.
2014 ENROLMENTS
The time of year when we begin planning for the new school year is fast approaching! I would appreciate
it if parents could let me know if they are moving away from Heathmont and therefore their children will
not be attending this school next year. Such information is critical to
our planning of grades and our employment of staff.
Similarly, if any parents know of people who will be enrolling at
Heathmont East next year please encourage them to present themselves
to our school so that we can include them in our planning. Thank you
for your support in this matter.
Two officers from the department visited our school in term three to assess the suitability of our learning
spaces; they have decided that we are entitled to a modular 5 building (a double class structure similar to
the prep bungalow) and this should arrive in mid-November. We are looking to establish it in an area of
the school ground which is not prime playground. We will continue to focus on our playground as we
address various areas to foster constructive and quality play as some areas of the school ground host very
few students whilst other areas have peak volumes. It is exciting; however, that we will gain quality
learning spaces as this means we can maintain spaces for our specialist subjects such as Music and LOTE.
NAPLAN
The grades 3 and 5 students have received their NAPLAN results this week. Teachers will sit and
analyse the results in relation to our programs and curriculum in the near future. At this
preliminary stage we can be very proud of our students’ results: The grade 3 students in
particular far surpassed State means in all categories and our grade 5 students generally passed
State means in all areas assessed. I will share with you our findings after more extensive analysis. Parents
have been advised to discuss results with their child’s teacher should further clarification be required.
SUNSMART – TERM FOUR
At this early stage of term four only some of our students are wearing their school
uniform hats during recesses to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays.
Remember it is compulsory as well as a safety measure. Children are encouraged
to wear ‘school uniform’ sunglasses to protect their eyes whenever they feel the
need.
SCHOOL UNIFORMS
As we start the new term, it is a timely reminder that school uniform is expected at HEPS. At times, it
has been obvious that the standard has dropped and this promotes bad habits and poor attitudes, as well as
reflects badly on the school. Please reinforce our standards by ensuring that your children attend school
looking neat and well groomed.
Pants with stripes or large pockets, cargo pants, capri pants, long shorts and short longs are NOT
school uniform and will not be accepted.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES AUSTRALIA
This valuable program will be provided again this term, commencing on Monday 21st October and
Tuesday 22nd
October respectively. The activities provided are as follows:
Grades 3 – 6: Zumba
Grades Prep – 2: Multi skills
CYBERSAFETY
As your children become exposed to more social media it is vital for
them to understand their responsibilities to constructive behaviours as
well as being aware of the dangers that may present. In association with
six other schools in the Maroondah Network we are providing an
information evening to our parents facilitated by Susan McLean (an ex
police) who will give parents practical insight into:
What to do if your child is victim to cyberbullying, signs to watch out
for in relation to cyber bullying and what to do if your child is the cyber bully.
Please avail yourself to this information evening if you can: Tuesday 22nd
October commencing 7.00pm
at Tinternavale Primary School gym located on Tintern Avenue, Ringwood East.
It’s great to be back and looking forward to this exciting term full of enriching educational experiences
and community activities.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.
Hello from Mrs. Finighan!
Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a very happy holiday. Personally, it is great to be back home and
fantastic to be back here at HEPS with this wonderful community!
I have had a magnificent experience, holidaying overseas with my husband and my three
children- each of them, in three different continents. As the old song goes…’I’ve been
everywhere man!’ Well… not quite! Africa was inspirational; the land and its wildlife,
and the people. Should any of you get the chance to go there, take it! I have included an
excerpt from my travel diary below.
Back to HEPS!
We’ve got a terrific term planned.
I can’t wait for the HEPS Carnival! The Carnivale planning team are in full swing now
and Saturday November 9th
is shaping up to be an amazing day of Carnival fun! As always
there will be rides, food and drinks. There will be fun stalls to try your luck, like
Tombolas, Angry Birds, and Lob-A-Choc! Get in early to the face painting & crazy hair
stall to get your Carnivale look happening! And what about a photo at the photo booth
after that!! You can even get a photo taken with a snake or a crocodile…you don’t see that
everyday!!
Remember to grab early-bird ride tickets too. That way, you don’t have to line up for rides
on the day…and you get your rides at a discount price!
Other exciting events are the Grade 2 and Grade 3 sleepovers in November, Grade 3 being
at Scienceworks. Then of course for our talented musicians, there is the thrill of Band
Camp and the opportunity to meet with other student musicians at a surprise location.
The HEPS Swimming Program for Preps to year 4 students begins for 8 days, starting on
Tuesday 6th
November, straight after Melbourne Cup Day. This is held at Nunawading’s
Just Swimming and develops your child’s basic water confidence and safety.
That’s just a snippet of the learning and fun planned for HEPS children this term.
Please feel free to drop in or catch me for a chat out in the school ground.
Wishing you all the best,
Christine
Serengeti...my eyes are on fire! The gateway to the magnificent Serengeti wildlife park is the rocky outcrop called Naabi. Naabi is a 'kopje' in Maasai language, meaning 'island floating in a sea of grass'. After days on safari, it would become obvious how apt is this description of the Serengeti; ‘a sea of grass’. The Serengeti has to be seen to be understood. It is hard to describe the wild, expansive beauty that appears to go on and on forever. Everywhere we look, there are the animals of this precious place. Spying a herd of elephants, tiny silhouettes under a perfectly shaped lone acacia tree far, far away is total magic! A moment later, the outline of a giraffe and its calf bowing their heads into delicious shrubbery, just a stone's throw away, makes us exclaim with delight. Shortly after, we come across a lioness standing high on a termite mound sniffing at the wind, and having taken in our fill of her splendour, our guide drives just one hundred metres more to find four lion cubs atop a grassy
knoll; just their heads and perky ears to be seen, keenly watching mum over the long grass, with big sister behind keeping a watchful eye. Safari fun included jeep games that emerged quite naturally. To play spot the sleeping animal in the grass was fun. We took turns finding a jackal, a lion, a warthog, an ostrich, and a hyena- a most misunderstood creature and a favourite of our driver Amos. Then there were the most exquisite birds and oh so many of them; everywhere in startling abundance! Another game involved finding animals in the distance, so much fun at dusk or in the early hours when they are on the move. Amos would praise us for our finds! One morning, we were disappointed to miss out on our balloon ride due to high winds, however, we were blessed by the Serengeti, to a morning of animal babies. You mention one, we saw it! And lots of them! Gorgeous and adorable. Warthog babies are very cute. Like their parents, they are quite shy and run from view with their skinny little tails in the air. They are both comical and beautiful to me. We saw lions make a couple of kills, which I found interesting to watch, partly because I was watching myself watching. Does that make sense? On one occasion, I was sad for the little Thompson's gazelle that was skillfully and patiently stalked by the lioness. The gazelle was with a partner. Whatever became of that little one I wonder? And do they grieve? Am I anthropomorphising like mad? Yes! Anyway, the gazelle eventually walked directly into the path of the prowling lioness. She was an experienced and impressive hunter and had the advantage in the long grass, where a lion can easily hide, and a small gazelle will stumble in hidden shrubbery and holes. So the lioness was fed and could rest for a while. All is as it is and as it should be. My eyes enjoyed the landscape as much as the animals. They are inseparable. I was entranced by the unique perspective. Being able to look out into the distance and have a clear line of sight that stretches so distinctly out to plains way beyond, and yet still further and further beyond, was utterly captivating. Sometimes the grass plain is so flat forever beyond, I wonder that it is not an inland sea. It is not the kind of watery vibrating illusion we know as a mirage, but simply the most clear view of the whole flat silvery plain outstretched before us. The depth of field is extraordinary. The more I look, the more I see. I notice how the land changes in the far distance. The flat plains break as a brief rise in the ground appears, and then elsewhere, far away further, there are acacias dotted across the landscape, and still further away there is a small change in the colour of the grass and a buffalo herd is grazing. Then a series of kopjes appear on the horizon, truly looking as though you could paddle out to them on a boat. Eagles soar and play in the wind. In the most farthest of places, the horizon may be flat and sparse, only broken by the outline of wildebeest or a few zebras or a topi all alone, or on other occasions, there are rolling hills, leading to distant mountains, maybe one, maybe many. I allow myself to be engulfed within this Serengeti. If only I could sit up on a kopje and stare out into the distance like a prayer, for a whole day, sunrise to sunset. I am greedy. I want to see the plains unfold before my eyes over and over again. This land is powerful and dangerous, nurturing and plentiful, gentle and warm like a womb. My imagination is lit and my heart beats warmly in my chest. I am alive in this moment in this place that is here with or without me and I am blessed to be...here.
Resource Centre News Congratulations to all our wonderful HEPS students who participated in the HEPS Write Your Own Storybook competition. The entries were outstanding and what a wonderful job it was to sit quietly and read through every single one. I want to thank all the students who put so much effort into producing such wonderful work. “It was a starry, starry night…” became many things, tales of fantasy, reality, adventure, sadness and lots more. The stories behind some of the work were truly inspirational and it was VERY hard to choose the winners. Each and every student who submitted a book is in my opinion, a winner!
Of course we could choose only one winner from each year level and those amazing books will be available to read outside the office shortly. All the other books will be in the Resource Centre for everyone to have a look. Prizes were awarded at assembly on Friday to the following students: First prize Encouragement Award Prep: Joseph Cohen Kartia Walls Grade 1: Tristan Wainwright Mia Ogilvie Grade 2: Kiara Bakken Jordy Moran Grade 3: Lily Anderson Cade Cavanagh/Jay Buchanan Grade 4: Bella Moran Ally Macdonald Grade 5: Juliette Lewis Katrina van Dijk/Katie Freeman Grade 6: Damon Walls Well done to everyone who entered.
