AIM HIGH @ HEPS Dear Parents,

Once again it has been a busy fortnight at HEPS with plenty of opportunities for our students to learn and

extend themselves in a variety of stimulating experiences.

Our young musicians were involved in a band performance at the Heathmont East Pre

School and shared their love of music with the kinder children. Ms Yeates, our

enthusiastic band leader, invited the pre-schoolers to participate by playing percussion in

the performance of “Rattle Snakes” and HEPS students gave them the chance to try

some of their instruments. Our band was made very welcome by the staff who had

taught some of them not so many years ago.

It was a joy to visit our Grade 4 teachers and students at their camp at Mt Evelyn on Tuesday. The

weather could not have been better for the camp and the range of outdoor activities were in full swing.

Page 2: HEATHMONT EAST PRIMARY SCHOOLassets.heathmonteastps.vic.edu.au/media/newsletters... · story will be called “It was a starry, starry night…”. All students are invited to participate.

Students were making damper, trying archery, learning about native animals in the “

Wildlife Encounter” and bravely meeting the challenges of the giant swing and flying

fox. It was a pleasure to stay for the highly entertaining “Red Faces” as a judge. Many

children had put hours of preparation into puppet shows, dance routines, magic shows

and other performances, making it very difficult to choose a winner. The thorough

organisation and dedicated care of the teachers was very evident and lead to the success

and enjoyment of all participants.

Our HEPS transition program has begun, and last week, our students had a chance to step up and visit

the class they may be in next year. Children tried some learning activities appropriate to their new

grade and worked with the teachers in that level. They were very proud of their efforts. Even our grade

6 students were able to experience what it will be like when they move on to secondary college through

the Year 7 transition program developed by Ms. Blenheim.

Kinder visits have continued with our 2014 Preps participating in Japanese, Art & Music classes. We are

looking forward to having them join with our current Preps for a concert presented by the Flying

Bookworm Theatre.

Our Preps have been learning around the theme “In the bottom of the Garden” and had a wonderful visit

to CERES Environment Park to explore this topic further. They enjoyed netting for water-bugs and found

tadpoles, yabbies, water beetles and more. They explored the garden for flowers and bees and then

became bees, attending bee school, learning the bee dance, building cells and learning how bees make

honey. They discovered the role of the beekeeper and how they collect honey. They

investigated the CERES worm farm, handled the worms and learned about their role in the

composting cycle. Finally, they hunted for mini-beasts and learnt about food webs and their

importance for a healthy environment. It was a very full day and a memorable one for our

Preps!

The Level 2 team have similarly brought learning alive for our Grade 1 and 2 students. These lucky

children have had the chance to have some close encounters with Mini Beasts with the visit by “Zoo

Comes to You Wild Action”. In addition, their excursion to the Melbourne Museum and Imax Theatre

enabled them to become more fully engaged in their learning and gain some rich insights into this topic.

Our talented HEPS students, ably lead by Ms Arthur, participated in the District athletics held at the Bill

Sewart Athletics track in Burwood. Five of these capable young athletes will go on to compete in the

Division and we wish them all the best.

Our dedicated HEPS staff offers many lunchtime clubs for students to develop skills and provide social

opportunities. Thanks to Ms Yeates and Ms Arthur there is yet another chance for students to pursue their

interests with the addition of the new Dance lunchtime Club. The first session proved very popular and

was well attended. Our students are very fortunate to be able to benefit from these clubs.

We wish all the HEPS Dads a happy Fathers’ Day and hope you enjoy the hand-

made cards and gifts your children have made for you and perhaps some gifts

purchased at our annual Parents Association Fathers’ Day stall. A huge thanks goes

to all the volunteer helpers who plan, set up and staff this stall. The children do love

having this safe and caring environment in which to choose a gift for their Dads and

benefit from the opportunity to grow in their independence as young shoppers.

Looking ahead, we have our fundraising barbeque at the Heathmont shops this Saturday and we hope to

see you there. Come along and bring family and friends to support this effort to raise more funds for the

school.

LIBRARY NEWS – August 2013

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

Can you believe that our wonderful students have now read over 5,500 books? What a great effort! I am so proud of each and every one of you. Keep reading and entering your books on the PRC website. You still have until the beginning of September to enter your books onto the website. Don’t forget to get your username and password from your

teacher, and to mark your books as “finished” when you have put them onto your page on the website. Our aim is to have all students who registered for the Challenge, complete the Challenge. I have been advised by the PRC office that the Honour Roll this year will be online, rather than in the print version of The Age. I understand there will be a personalised video along with the Honour Roll. HEPS WRITE YOUR OWN BOOK COMPETITION

It is time once again for us to have our annual Write Your Own Book competition. This year our story will be called “It was a starry, starry night…”. All students are invited to participate. Books must be picture story books including pictures and text and be no more than 10 pages long. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each grade level. Entries must include your name, grade and year level. All entries must be submitted to Mrs Austin in the library no later than Monday 16 September. I look forward to being overwhelmed with entries in this exciting competition. Prizes will be awarded to the winners at assembly during Term 4. Sue Austin Library

Children With Type 1 Diabetes - Are You Challenged by Your Child’s Diabetes?

Research into parenting children with type 1 diabetes.

The University of Queensland is conducting research into parenting children with type 1 diabetes.

Parenting a child with diabetes presents many challenges (everything from the regular blood glucose

monitoring and insulin intake, to more general parenting tasks). The aim of this study is to understand

the factors that make the management of childhood diabetes particularly difficult, and to use this

information to develop strategies that might assist parents in managing their child’s diabetes.

If you are a parent of a 2 to 10-year-old child with type 1 diabetes, we would love to hear from you!

By sharing your experiences (confidentially), you will be making a valuable contribution to the

development of much-needed childhood diabetes management strategies for parents.

To complete the online survey, please log on to: https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/type1diabetes

For further information about the project or to request a survey to be posted to you, please email Aditi

Lohan ([email protected]) or call (07 3365 7689) at the Parenting and Family Support

Centre in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland, St Lucia QLD 4072 (Fax: 07 3365

6724).

Thank you for your time and participation.
