Year 12 Celebrations

College events of the past week have centred around the farewell Celebrations for the Year

12 VCE and VCAL students.

Last Friday, the whole school Celebration Assembly was held. It was a fantastic celebration

of various aspects of the students’ time at Heathmont College and students and staff out-

lined some of their memorable events.

The Senior school organised a trip to Puffing Billy on Monday. On Tuesday, their final day,

students paraded in their costumes throughout the school before leaving to prepare for the

Valedictory Dinner at the Grand in Wantirna. Blues on the Rocks opened the proceedings

with a lively medley of songs. Ben Neve, Joshua Alexander, Jayden Rattle, Jarryn Van Dyk

were very impressive and their musical skills will be missed. Patrick Eaton and Bethan Fox

performed as a duo whilst Jonathan Occleshaw closed the evening with an energetic drum

solo. Students were presented with a graduation certificate and a memento of their time at

the College in front of proud parents and friends. During the ceremony we saw an amusing

and moving Power Point presentation, developed by Catherine Choueiri.

I would like to thank the Senior School team for all of their hard work to enable the success

of this festival of celebrations – Nina Ling, Geoff Brasier, Natasha Haggar, Dean Hewitt and

Pat Johnson who have all spent hours of work presenting these occasions for the students

and their families. The dedication and work ethic of staff at the school is second to none

and it is at this time of the year that it is obvious to all.

Music

The Music Department presented their annual end of year concert last Thursday. The

breadth and quality of the students - choirs, drum groups and instrumental ensembles -

was staggering. The music area was full of parents and friends enjoying the performances

of the musicians. Heathmont College can be very proud of the opportunities it offers to its

students.

On a promising note, over the last week, our Transition Coordinator Miss Christodolou and I

have been interviewing the applicants for Year 7 College Scholarships. The large volume of

high quality applicants mirrors the increased popularity of the school within the local

community. It is no exaggeration to say that the field was outstanding and the choice of

successful applicants will be extremely difficult. The scholarship recipients will be presented

with their awards at the Presentation Evening in December.

I wish those students who are undertaking Units 3 & 4 VCAA examinations all the best over

the next few weeks. The VCAL students in Year 12 will also be completing their strands for

their final assessments. It will undoubtedly be a stressful and busy time for them, however,

the hard work that they have put into their work over the course of the year will be of

enormous benefit to them all.

On Friday October 18 the College held a farewell assembly for the Year 12

students. Our School Captains spoke about their final year at Heathmont and

enlightened others about what to expect in their quest for this educational

milestone. Whether they studied VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learn-

ing) or VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) we congratulate all students on

their endeavour and ability to achieve in their chosen pathway.

Tuesday October 22 was our annual

’Fancy Dress’ day. Some notable

costumes included Willy Wonka’s

Chocolate Bars, The Blues Brothers,

Sandy and Danny from Grease, the

Padowans, Captain America, the Jail

Birds, Snow White, Tom and Jerry,

Robin Hood, the Super Heroes, Her-

moine Granger and a number of princesses. Students engaged in a treas-

ure hunt and a costume parade.

YEAR 12 END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS

On Monday October 21 we travelled on

Puffing Billy and had a BBQ lunch at

Emerald Lake. Whilst the weather was

not kind, there was fun and frivolity

celebrating the final year of secondary

schooling.

The day was followed by the Valedictory Dinner at The Grand on Cathies Lane

in Wantirna. A great night was had by all with a number of musical items

from our own Year 12 students - Blues on the Rocks, Bethan Fox, Patrick

Eaton and a percussion number from Jonathan Occleshaw. Congratulations

Year 12 on a fabulous year and the effort and endeavor you have shown.

Good luck in whatever path you choose.

Congratulations to all students who performed at the End-of-Year

Music Concert on Thursday October 17!

There were some wonderful performances by Junior Band, Percussion

Ensemble, Choir, Guitar Ensemble and Blues on the Rocks. We had

some very impressive solo performances. Year 12 student Jonathan

Occleshaw, performed a Metalcore arrangement of Coldplay’s Para-

dise on Drum kit, Dylan Milosevic of Year 11 performed Cliffs of Dover by

Eric Johnson on electric guitar and Year 12 student Pat Eaton sang Talkin bout

a Revolution by Tracy Chapman.

Thank you to Sally Barkla, Rod McLeod, Lachlan Barratt and Adam Watson for

preparing students for their performances on the night and to Year 12 trom-

bonist Joshua Alexander for doing a fantastic job compering the night. Thank

you again to all parents and staff who came along and supported our music

students on the night. A special congratulations to our Year 12 music perform-

ers who will be missed next year. I wish you all the best for your VCE exams

and future endeavours and hope that music remains an enjoyable lifelong expe-

rience for you!

Malaysia / Borneo There will be a combined Heathmont College - Vermont Secondary College study tour to Malaysia and Borneo next year from 24th June till 4th July. The deposit for this tour is due on the 8th of November 2013. For more in-formation, please contact Ms Devathas, the tour coordinator on the college number, 98714888.

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, the year 9 students are

becoming familiar with the eclectic styles of Pablo Picasso.

After looking at Picasso’s cubist works, we embarked on our

own design journey demonstrating our interpretation of this

style.

Students selected their own themes and had to consider very

carefully the effects they were after, by considering colours

and how to use them to make an impact. Some used warm

and cool while others settled for a monochromatic palette.

Overall I think you would agree with me that the works are

stunning.

I am very proud of the creativity and hard work that they put

into this task. Students are gaining a good understanding that

pre planning and concentration are the keys to good results.

YEAR 8 FOODS

Congratulations to Hannah Lawford in 082 for the

effort she put into the presentation of her Fruit and

Vegetable assessment task. Hannah went the extra

mile and turned the information she had gathered on

oranges into an Orange Tree. As you can see by the

pictures Hannah used a real tree for the oranges which

contained the required information. This was a very

creative way of presenting her information and

showed how much she enjoyed doing the task. Well

done Hannah.

Term 4 is a very important time for all our Middle School students, as they focus on demonstrating their knowledge

and skills in each of their subjects. Students need to be confident that they can successfully complete their year and be

ready to progress to the next year level. Two programs which support this focus on high expectations and being ready

for 2014 will take place in November and December.

The first program is the Common Assessment period from Monday November 18 – Friday November 29. In this two

week period students will have one assessment task or exam for each subject. This is an opportunity for students to

show what they have learnt over the term and the semester. They will also experience completing a task in an exam

atmosphere – sitting at tables set up for an exam, putting mobile phones on the teacher’s desk, coming prepared with

necessary equipment such as pens and study notes and remaining silent for the full session. This is excellent practice

for future years when students move into the Senior School.

The second program concludes the year for Middle School. The program is called Headstart – An Introduction to 2014.

It takes place over eight days: Monday December 9 – Wednesday December 18. This is a compulsory program for all

Year 7, 8 and 9 students. The program involves beginning the work for the next year, so it is vital that students attend

every day and complete all the given tasks. It is an opportunity for students to experience the requirements of the next

year and to show that they are ready to progress. Students must come each day with fully charged laptops, pens and

paper and in correct uniform. Absences will be followed up with parents as normal, to ensure that students begin 2014

having already completed the first task for each subject. In some subjects, students may also have reading or a task to

complete over the holidays.

We were very proud of our Middle School students on Monday at the Learning Group assembly. A large number of our

students received certificates for outstanding work in Science and Maths competitions, participating in the Asian

Cultural Day and the Schools Spectacular. The college is especially proud of Moo Paw and Stephanie Macdonald who

were the only two students in the state to achieve a commendation for the In2science Awards. The Year 10 captains

also spoke to the students about applying for the position of year level captains for 2014. Application forms are availa-

ble from the Middle School office and completed forms are to be returned to the main office by Wednesday November

6. This is a very important position and we look forward to listening to the speeches from the applicants.

Our Year 7 Ambassadors will be representing the college at the MEC Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11.

Thank you to all our students and student leaders for being such positive role models for the college. Well done Middle

Proud and deserving winners of their own iPad minis are Stephanie Macdonald and Moo Paw. The two girls were presented with their certificates and prizes by Minister for Education, Martin Dixon, at a ceremony at Melbourne Museum on Monday, 21 October 2013. As part of their submission to the In2science competition the students had to provide examples of scientific learning from the classrooms and how their university mentor encouraged their engagement, motivation and understanding of science. Well done girls!

As part of the study of “Light” the year 9s have kept their eyes on the ball during an enlightening, and often messy, dissection of a bull’s eye.
