On June 13th, Fte Maximal together with its exclusive distri-butor in Cyprus, MS Electronics, organized a seminar about DVB-T technology. In a country where the first 5 channels in DVB-T format (one of them in HD) have been recently“switched on”, the professionals of the sector showed a big expectation ahead of the new broadcasting platform they are going to use.

The seminar was 4 hours long, and we tried to give an emi-nently practical vision of the technology, basing most of the presentation in how to adapt the existing Analogue installa-tions into the arrival of the new Digital platform.

Fte maximal also presented the solution for the 100% digital distribution in professional installations (hotels) through its new transmodulators TKF 310 Series (DVB-S to DVB-T con-verter). The seminar ended with a small showroom, where the professionals of the sector exchanged opinions about the Fte maximal range of products.

Before the 310 Series Headend became available, all the Hea-dend systems in the market

were programmed through small exter-nal programmers or keyboards included in the same modules. The information for the professional was brief, and the configuration of the devices had certain complexity since managing such plen-tiful information in small alphanumeric displays was difficult. Once the progra-

mming was finished, and in a second phase, the adjustment of the Headend and its levels had to be made through a Field Strength Meter.

Fte maximal set a new challenge and it created the MAP (Meter Aided Pro-gramming) Function. Through it, the Field Strength Meter of mediaMAX EVO and mediaMAX MINI series can carry out the programming of the mo-

dules and their adjustments in only one operation. A communication protocol named DV BUS allows this dual functio-nality, which means a real revolution and optimizes the necessary time in the assembling and starting of the hea-dend systems.

On april 6 th, Fte maximal presented this innovation in the patents office, and it is currently pending of resolution.

Advanced and intuitive programming menusare shown in the TFT screen of the Field Strength Meter. (graphic 1).

The installer will need only the Field Strength Me-ter in order to take the measurements of the ins-tallation and programming the devices, without needing an external programmer.

He will be able to see the programmed parame-ters, as well as the different measured values (BER, MER, Noise Margin etc,…) in a single window. (graphic 2).

It allows programming and adjusting all the para-meters of the modules connected to the BUS without needing to connect and disconnect each module. This is an important difference from the usual programming with external programmers that usually only allow configuring the connected module. The system allows selecting the module that has to be programmed in an easy way in the OSD of the TFT. (graphic 3).

It has the possibility of saving and copyingthe confi gurations of each module in different programs. The created programs can be transferred from one module to another one, so optimizing the programming time. Selecting the program you wish, all the parameters will be transferred into the device.

The programmes can be stored in the inner memory of the Field Strength Meter or in a USB storage device (unlimited programmes capacity) and they have the facility to allocate a file name at the same time in order to identify them easily.(graphic 4 and 5).

It allows updating the fi rmware of the devices connected to the BUS in a simultaneous in only an easy and quick operation. (graphic 6).

It incorporates a LOG register, where you will be able to see if the module has lost the feed (due to any failure of the Power Network), if it has lost the signal (due to any problem in the installation), if the module has been upda-ted, etc. All this information remains saved and it can be read or extracted through the USB connector of the Field Strength Meter. The extraction of the information is made through the USB connector of the module and it is stored in a text file so it can be easily displayed in a PC. (graphic 7 and 8).

LNC 54 US-TVThis new Twin LNC (for 2 users/receivers) is already available. Its main feature is the incorporation of a combiner for the Terrestrial signal. This way, the cable that feeds each Set-Top-Box transports both 2 Bands(Terrestrial and Satellite). Once in the flat, the two signals can be separa-ted by using a mixer re-ference AM (code 0980000) or through any inductive out-let with two or three connec-tors that covers the frequencies from 5 to 2400 MHz.

The new receiver U6500, ready for the DVB-T signals in High Definition (DVB-T HD) is available from July, com-mercialised under “Univers by Fte” trademark.

Apart from the tuning of the DVB-T channels in HD, we emphasise that it is provided with USB 2.0 connector in the front panel which gives it the PVR Ready functionali-ty; therefore you will be able to record any program you wish through an external Hard Disk.

U6500 has the competitive advantage of being compa-tible with AC3 (Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital +), which is the sound format adopted and promoted by manyOperators, for scrambling their Audio signals in their

High Definition transmissions.

Many DVB-T HD Receivers and Televisions which can be found in the market are suffering due to the appea-rance of this new Audio format: they can reproduce the Picture, but not the Audio.

It is the case of references U6000 and U6200,also com-mercialized under “Univers by Fte” trademark. In order to solve this problem, Fte maximal has offered an upda-ting software to the users, completely free of charge. A simple software change, done in less than two minutes through the USB connector, allows recovering the Audio coded in AC3 and enjoying the High Definition signals without restrictions.

HDTV – High Defi nition Television

Currently, the worldwide market of Television is being revolu-tionised by new technology -

HDTV. Well-known in Satellite (DVB-S / DVB-S2), now the HDTV begins to take its place in the Terrestrial Broad-casting (DVB-T).

What is HDTV?

HDTV is the High Defi nition Tele-vision. The definition is the picture sharpness or clarity through which we perceive the details of an image obser-ved through optical instruments, or the one formed over photographic film or television screen.

Therefore High Defi nition Television must have a higher definition than the television known so far, or Standard Definition Television (SDTV).

In order to obtain this higher definition, the number of lines that create the ima-ge are increased and we move to an aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9

This increase in the number of lines and in the aspect ratio means more pixels in the image (homogeneous smaller surface than the ones that compose an image)

Graphically we can observe how the SD television has 576 vertical lines and each of these lines is formed by 720 horizontal pixels, keeping an aspect ra-tio of 4:3, while HD television has 720 or 1080 vertical lines, formed by 1280

or 1920 horizontal pixels respectively, keeping an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Numerically, we can do the following calculation

- SDTV576 x 720 = 414.720 pixels

- HDTV720 x 1280 = 921.600 pixels(2,22 times more than SDTV)

1080 x 1920 = 2.073.600 pixels(5 times more than SDTV)

Therefore the High Defi nition Televi-sion has more than twice the definition of Standard Definition Television.

HDTV, HD Ready, FULL HD

When we pass by TV shops, digital re-ceivers shops, TV devices shops, etc, we find ourselves surrounded with a lot of symbols and logos of HDTV, HD Ready, FULL HD.

Most of the time, all these symbols can

be confusing since they are private symbols, from trademarks such:

Fortunately, in 2007 the EICTA (Eu-ropean Information and Communica-tions Technology Industry Association) approved the official distinctive logos. They are:

HD Ready stamp is applicable to those visualization devices which are able to show High Definition signals (720p, 1080i), with inputs ready for HD through an external source (ie. HDMI inputs), that is, in order to enjoy High Definition output, it should be used to-gether with a HDTV device, to be able to receive and decode the signals.

HDTV16:9

HDTV16:9

SDTV4:3

Page 11: Fte News 02-EN

FteNews Mayo-Junio 201011

HDTV stamp is used for television re-ceivers -including the external receivers as well as televisions with a high defi-nition receiver integrated- which can receive and decode High Definition sig-nals (720p, 1080i) via Satellite, Cable or Terrestrial.

The certified products HD Ready 1080p have been designed for the screens of the devices that, besides 720p and 1080i also accept, process and show 1080p signals. Same as in case of HD Ready, they must be used together with a device that can receive and decode the signals.

HDTV 1080p stamp has been desig-ned for television receivers -including decoders as well as integrated digital televisions- that can receive and de-code satellite, cable or terrestrial High Definition signals (720p, 1080i and 1080p).

As we have seen, the televisions or HD Ready or HD Ready 1080p screens will need an external receiver or device with high definition in order to enjoy a image of high quality.

Situation in the Worldwide

In the International Market, each coun-try has its particular compression me-thod for DVB-T broadcasting.

In the European countries, the SD mar-ket is mainly based on the well-known

DVB-T MPEG-2 SD standard, but in the latest months, in Central Europe as well as in Greece or Cyprus, they are broadcasting their DVB-T signals in MPEG-4 SD. This standard does not contribute so much to improve the qua-lity of the picture (sharpness or clarity) comparing to MPEG-2 SD.

In the market of HDTV in DVB-T, the main worldwide market uses DVB-T MPEG-4 HD broadcasting, but in some countries like Australia, they use also MPEG-2 HD.

The whole market picture requires the manufacturers to offer to the market a comprehensive range of possibilities to satisfy all the different market needs.

Fte maximal solutions for HDTV

Currently, Fte maximal has two diffe-rent solutions for the reception of HD channels via Satellite

MAX S500 HD: It is an MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Receiver for SD / HD Satellite (DVB-S/S2) for Free To Air channels. Regarding its connectivity, it has one SCART connector, 3 RCA’s and one HDMI output. It allows the updating via OTA or through USB. Using the USB connector, it is also possible to play MP3, JPEG and MPG from an external hard disk.

MAX S600 HD CI: It is an MPEG-2/MPEG-4 PVR Ready for SD / HD Satellite (DVB-S/S2) channels (FTA or scrambled - 2 slots). With one SCART connector, YUV outputs and one HDMI output. It also allows the updating via OTA or through USB. Using the USB connector, it is also possible to play MP3, JPEG and MPG from an external

hard disk, as well as recording the in-formation in an external Hard Disk.

Concerning the models for HD Terres-trial reception (DVB-T):

U6000: Receiver for DVB-T MPEG-2/MPEG-4 channels in SD / HD (FTA or scrambled -2 slots). It has two CI slots in the front panel, so you can use a PCMIA + Smart Card. Also, it has a USB connector in the front pa-nel for software updating. In the back panel, it has 2 SCART connectors, Di-gital Audio Output (coaxial and optical), components video output (Y/Pb/Pr) and one HDMI output..

U6200: It is a DVB-T MPEG-2/MPEG-4 PVR with Twin Tuner for SD / HD terrestrial channels (FTA or scram-bled - 2 slots). Also it has a USB con-nector in the front panel for software updating. By having Twin Tuner you can record a channel while you are watching another one. Apart from the difference of the Twin Tuner, the con-nections are the same as in U6000.

U6500 PVR Ready PVR Ready for DVB-T MPEG-2/MPEG-4 FTA cha-nnels in SD / HD. In the back panel, it has one SCART connector, 3 RCA’s, Digital Audio Output (coaxial), com-ponents video output (Y/Pb/Pr) and an HDMI output. Using the USB con-nector, it is also possible to play MP3, JPEG and MPG from an external Hard

These three models are compatible to DD+ Audio (Dolby Digital +), format through which some channels are cu-rrently broadcasting.
