*An object is a noun or pronoun
that indicates towards WHAT or
WHOM the action of the verb is directed.
Paul writes a letter.
Alicia sees us.*
Mike bought a new CD.
The boys watch the fireworks in awe.
Stephanie marries David.
* In English, direct & indirect
objects come AFTER the
verb.
*In English, direct &
indirect object PRONOUNS
will also come after the
verb.
What is a… DIRECT OBJECT in English???
A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb directly. There is NO preposition between the verb & the
noun (or pronoun) object.
The direct object will answer the question: Who? What?
*Identify the verb. *Ask either qui? or quoi? in relation to the verb. *The answer will be your direct object.*
Can you find the direct object?
1. Wealthy people spend their money on artwork.
2. My friend bakes cookies often. 3. The city council candidate delivered a rousing
speech yesterday. 4. The hurricane damaged some boats in the
harbor. 5. AT&T sent a bill to Jill. 6. Earl drives a truck to work. 7. Everyone loves football. 8. Sam eats a sandwich for lunch everyday.
*Le complément d'objet direct est un mot (ou groupe de mots)
qui se joint au verbe SANS PREPOSITION pour
en compléter le sens.

Quand on ne veut pas répéter un mot, on peut le remplacer
par un pronom.
Un pronom peut être un complément d’objet
direct (COD).
On utilise le pronom COD quand on veut éliminer la
répétition.
Le pronom COD se trouve AVANT le verbe qu’il
complète.

An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb indirectly.
There is the preposition to between the verb & the noun (or pronoun) object. (The preposition relates the object to the verb.)
The indirect object will answer the question: To whom? For whom?
**Think of the indirect object as the person that BENEFITS from the action of
the verb.
Can you find the indirect object?
1. He gave the painting to the museum. 2. I offered John a cupcake. 3. They sent a postcard to Bill. 4. Jaisen bought a bike for his son. 5. Daniel fixes computers for his family. 6. She gave me her notes. 7. The students ask the teacher many questions.
**Think of the indirect object as the person that BENEFITS from the action of the verb. In other
words, when something or someone gets the direct object, that thing or person is the
indirect object!

dans la même phrase. Dans ce cas, on mets les pronoms dans cet ordre:
