NOTES

1. A conflicts exist concerning the birth date of Andrew Jackson Brown as recorded on his tombstone and in the Bible [Reference 8] of James W. Brown. [Child No. 11 of this family group]. Andrew's tombstone inscription reads "born 28 Mar 1783." According to the Bible Andrew was born 1 Mar 1783.

2. On page 12 of Reference 4 the author states that George W. Brown married Mary Ann Ford on 15 November 1841 in Lincoln County. A film copy of this original marriage record [Bk 2:41 shows the groom's surname to have been "Birch." Reference 16 above shows George W. Brown's wife to be Mary C. Brown. Reference 31 indicates that George W. Brown's wife at the time of his death was Frances Keith. Reference 4 gives her surname as "Pew." This compiler has no explanation for these discrepancies.

All unannotated information was extracted from Some Descendants of William Brown of Norwood's Creek of the Cat,awba River fNortb Carolina) by Donnadeane D. Depew (Sacramento: By the Author, 1990), pp. 1, 4, 5 and 10-12. Mrs. Depew is a direct descendant of Alfred Young Brown (#3 of this family group) and is a credible researcher.

4. Eva Newman, The House of Brown (typescript, n.d), 1 page. Repository of the original of this material is unknown; compiler has photocopy. Eva Clarissa (Brown) Newman, 20 Dec 1880-16 Jan 1969, was the daughter of James William Brown, youngest son of Andrew Jackson Brown, subject of this family group and his second wife Sarah Miller. Mrs. Newman suggests that Elizabeth Thompson was the wife of William Brown. As Andrew Brown's first son by his first wife, Isabella Young, was named William Thompson Brown, this is certainly a possibility. On the negative side Mrs. Newman's account contains statements known to be erroneous.

In May, 1991, the owner of this original record and the Bible associated with it was Mrs. Arthur Pollman !Floreine Brown), 460 Avery St, Troy, MO 63379. James W. Brown was the son Andrew Jackson Brown by his second wife. Some early data referenced here were entered well after the event

NOTES

1. A conflicts exists concerning the birth date of Andrew Jackson Brown as recorded on his tombst.one and in the Bible of James W. Brown. !half sibling t.o the children listed on the previous page!. See References 1 and 7 above. Andrew's tombstone inscription reads "born 28 Mar 1783." According to the Bible Andrew was born i Mar 1783.

2. The question of the authenticity of the Thoen Stone is still unresolved Wynn Parks is the author of a two-part article entitled "The Thoen Stone: Searching for Ezra Kind," appearing in the Oct.ober and November 2008 issues of Deadwood Magazine.

3. The accuracy of the association of the Alfred Young Brown as a descendant of Andrew Jackson Brown has been questioned I am unaware of Donnadeane Depew's source for including him in this family (she herself was a descendant of his line), but do know that she corresponded with several descendants of Andrew Jackson Brown by his first wife Isabella Young.

Unfortunately the Bible record kept by James William Brown did not include his half-siblings of which Alfred Young Brown would have been one. The House of Brown !reference 4 above! by Eva (Brown) Newman includes Alfred Young Brown as a son of Andrew Jackson Brown by his first wife Isabella Young. As the House of Brown contains a number of errors, it cannot be counted as the most reliable of sources.

The following was extracted from Newton Alexander Nisbit. Nisbit Narrations. Charlotte, NC: By the Author, 1961.

The author states that he received this material in 1955 from Mrs. J. B. (Mame Harbin) Houston, Mooresville, N. C. ; Mrs. (David) Illa Nesbit; Troutman, N. C. ; and Mr. J. H. Nesbitt, Fort Mill, S. C. (High School Principal).

MOSES NESBIT, was b. about 1740, either in Penn. or County Down, North Ireland. He grew up and was mar. in Lancaster county, Penn. about 1760 or 1763 to Elizabeth McLelland, daughter of William and Macy (Ross) McLelland. They all came south to Rowan county, N. C. Moses Nesbit settled on Reedy Creek of the Catawba River, south west of the present city of Statesville, N. C. on the lands adjoining Samuel and Christopher Houston, who also came from Lancaster county, Penn.

1A Moses Nesbitt d. about 1778, leaving a widow, six sons and one daughter: William, John[,[ Thomas, Ester, Stephenson, Samuel and Ross Nesbitt No records of these, except one named Ross Nesbitt

2A Ross Nesbitt was the fourth son, b. about 1770, Rowan county, N. C. Mar. about 1804 to Isabella Brown, only daughter of William and Jean (Irwin) Brown of Iredell county, N. C. Ross and family lived near Perth Church same county. They had one known son, James Ross Nesbitt

This is a faithful transcription; the abbreviations and form are those of Mr. Nisbit or his contributors. The significance of this information is that it is the source for one of the two disparate names attributed to the wife of William Brown. <ff. .At.

THE HOUSE OF BROWN

The following account was written by Eva Clarissa (Brown) Newman (20 December 1880-16 January 1969). Mrs. Newman was the daughter of James William Brown, youngest son of Andrew Jackson Brown. This copy has been transcribed exactly (including misspelling) from a photocopy of the typewritten original (location of the original is unknown). The footnotes are my additions annotating proven errors or disagreements with other sources. Despite the mistakes, Mrs. Newman's narrative is significant because of her Brown ancestry and the fact that she grew up on the old Andrew Jackson Brown homestead in Lincoln County, Missouri .

WILLIAM BROWN, the father of Andrew Jackson Brown, was born in Ireland about the year 1754; and came to America about 1773, age 19,1 settling in North Carolina just prior to the Revolutionary War (1775-1787), He came over to help the 13 colonies free themselves from England.

There is reason to believe that William Brown was somehow related to William Jackson, 2

the great Irish musician, perhaps he was a nephew. This is family tradition and we cannot verify it with written record, tho handed down through family conversation. It seems that here is the origin of the name "Andrew Jackson Brown", the first part being the name of William Brown's brother (Andrew).

We do not know the details; but William Brown was slightly crippled, most likely in his service in our War for Freedom; yet, so far we have not positive information to this effect. Concerning this matter we quote from a statement by the North Carolina Historical Commission, Raleigh, N.C. :

"In the D.A.R. Volume, Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution, the Index contains twenty-one references to persons by the name of William Brown and the counties are not given".

WILLIAM BROWN (it seems) married Elizabeth Thompson about the year 1780;3 and they had at least eight children, likely more, their names being: Thompson, Andrew Jackson, Alfred, James, William, Elizabeth, Sarah and Benjamin Franklin, their successive order being unknown. 4

ANDREW JACKSON BROWN was born in North Carolina, April 4, 1783,5 two weeks prior to the political end of the Revolution.

In 1803 he married Isabella Young of Lincoln County, North Carolina, she being just sixteen years of age. They had three children of whom we know: Thompson, born in 1805; Alfred Young, born in 1807; and Isabella, born Feb. 6, 1809, died in 1856. The mother of these three children died in 1814, in N.C.

ANDREW JACKSON BROWN again married, this time to MISS SARAH Mil.LER, whose family were neighbors to the Browns, her birth being October 23, 1798, their wedding occuring, they say, on June 20, 1815, just two days after the battle of Waterloo, the great Napoleon's defeat. Their children are as follows: Andrew Miller Brown, born April 5, 1816; Jane Brown, born on July 31, 1817; George Washington Brown, born July 5, 1819; Clarissa Brown born July 9, 1821. The four children just named were born in the Old North State (N.C.).

The seven children born in Missouri were as follows: Moses Harvey Brown, born December 24, 1824, six weeks after the family arrived in Missouri; Elizabeth Brown, born January 25 , 1827; Francis Marion Brown, born April 17, 1829; Julia Ann Brown, born January 1, 1832; Sarah Catherine Brown, born April 24, 1835; Mary Emily Brown, born May 20 1837; and James William Brown, born April 14, 1841.

THE EMMIGRATION. Andrew Jackson Brown, with his wife and their four children, and his other three children by his first marriage (Thompson, Alfred, Isabella) left their old native state (NC) some time in the late summer of 1824; and arrived in Missouri in covered wagons with family goods, the women riding side-saddles day after day and all the way. The objective of their journey was the home of Sarah Miller Brown's father, Andrew Miller (weight 350 pounds), who had gone out "west" six years before (1818), settling six miles southeast of Troy, Mo., near the mouth of Crooked Creek, Andrew Miller being a very prominent citizen many years in Missouri .

In 1827, Andrew Jackson Brown "entered" from our government 160 acres of land three miles south of Troy, Mo.; and he later likewise secured another quarter-section in the vicinity. The first land bought (160 acres) was in Sections 10 & 11 , Township 46 North and in Range No. One West of the Fifth P.M. This land has always been continuously in the ownerhsip of the family, Andrew Jackson Brown living on it, with his wife, until their passing, after which their son, James William Brown became the owner; and he and family made it their home until the decease of the latter on September 29, 1916. And after this date the title to the property passed to Raymond Edward Brown, the son of James W. Brown. ·

1Donnadeane D. Depew, Some Descendants of William Brown of Norwood's Creek of the Catawba River (North

Carolina) (Sacramento: By the Author, 1990), p. l. William Brown's name first appears on Capt. John Oliphant's List of Taxables, Rowan County, North Carolina, for the year 1768. This proves his birthdate and his date of arrival in the Colonies stated above to be incorrect .

2Eric Blom, Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 9 vols. (London: Macmillan & Co., 1954), 4:565. The

great Irish musician's name was Walter Jackson, not William Jackson.

~ewton Alexander Nisbit, Nisbit Narrations (Charlotte, NC: By the Author,1961), p. 416. This author offers without proof that the wife of William Brown was Jane Irwin. No documentation has been found for either name.

Lincoln County, NC, Deed F:738-738. This deed Lists the heirs of William Brown on 28 August 1806 as William Brown, John Brown, Robert Brown, Matthew Brown, Andrew Brown, James Brown and Ross Nisbet. Lincoln County, NC, Deed F:545-546, 30 August 1806, states Ross Nisbet was married to Isabella Brown. While this listing does not guarantee that all heirs were the children of William Brown, nor include any children who may have predeceased their father, it bears little resemblance to Mrs. Newman's listing.

5Some Descendants of William Brown of Norwood's Creek, page unnumbered, 12 from end of book. Picture of

Lincoln County, MO, tombstone of Andrew and Sarah (Miller) Brown. Andrew Brown's birth date shown on his tombstone is 28 March 1783. Mrs. Newman's birth date for Andrew Brown agrees with that from her father's Bible, however, the date was entered in the Bible long after the event. No opinion is being offered as to which is correct.
