THEORIES ON THE ANCESTRY OF MERCY BURCH, WIFE OF PETER BRADT The extract on the following page is from Frederick A. Virkus, editor. Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy: First Families of America: a Genealogical Encyclopedia of the United St ates. 7 vols. Chicago: A. N. Marquis [Vols. 3-4 Virkus Company] 1925-1942. Vol. 3: Compendium of American Genealogy. 1926. p. 292. The Burch ancestry in the entry of Mary (Bradt) Kilpatrick in the Compendium is significant for two reasons. First because so little is known of the ancestry of Mercy Burtch, and second because Mrs. Kilpatrick had access to family contacts and information no longer available to researchers. The source for Mercy' s maiden name of Burtch appears to have come to Mrs. Kilpatrick through correspondence she had with Mercy Dunn [1840-1929], a granddaughter of Mercy (Burtch) Bradt. The ancestry of William Bradt presented in Mrs. Kilpatrick's entry, documentation of which can be found in Volume. 1 (The Bradt/Bratt Family) of this collection, has been proven to be correct. It is to be hoped that her research of Mercy Burtch's background is equally accurate although substantiating it has proved elusive. Two books which deal extensively with Burtch genealogy do not present anything definitive concerning Mercy's parentage. Frank J. Doherty in Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Vol. 2 (Pleasant Valley, NY: Author, 1993) conditionally places Mercy Burtch and her apparent brothers in the family of Jonathan Burtch, born 1707, and Mary Rathbun. He indicates Jonathan and Mary's marriage date was 15 January 1736. Assuming Mary Rathbun was as young as 16 years old when she married in 1736, she would have been 50 years old at the time of Mercy' s birth in 1776, perhaps not impossible, but unlikely. Lindsey S. Reeks in Ontario Loyalist Ancestors (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1991) appears to come down more on the side of David, rather than Jonathan, as the name of the father of the Burtch siblings, but acknowledges the difficulty of any positive determination. Since Mercy and all but one of her presumed brothers named a son David, this compiler tends to favor David as name of Mercy' s father. Mercy Burch's presumed brothers, Thomas and Israel, are suggested by the proximity of their Louth Township land which abuts that of Mercy and her husband Peter Bradt (refer to the Louth Township map later in this compilation). Stephen Burtch speaks of having many brothers in his 23 May 1794 petition in which he is seeking Crown Land in Louth Township adjoining his brother Israel. Zachariah and Edy Burtch are two other possible brothers of Mercy (Burtch) Bradt. In Zacharias's Crown Land petition of 3 June 1800 he said he was staying with his brother Edy and that he had four brothers residing in Lincoln County. Two other contemporary Burtch United Empire Loyalists are Charles and Nathan Burtch of Burford. In conclusion, some assumptions about Mercy Burtch's family associations have more credibility that others, but in the final reckoning there is no definitive proof for any of them. $. Jlt. I 3-111 I

THEORIES ON THE ANCESTRY OF MERCY BURCH, WIFE OF PETER BRADT

The extract on the following page is from Frederick A. Virkus, editor. Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy: First Families of America: a Genealogical Encyclopedia of the United

States. 7 vols. Chicago: A.

Kilpatrick' s entry, documentation of which can be found in Volume.

Mercy Burch' s presumed brothers, Thomas and Israel, are suggested by the proximity of their Louth Township land which abuts that of Mercy and her husband Peter Bradt (refer to the Louth Township map later in this compilation). Stephen Burtch speaks of having many brothers in his 23 May 1794 petition in which he is seeking Crown Land in Louth Township adjoining his brother Israel.

Zachariah and Edy Burtch are two other possible brothers of Mercy (Burtch) Bradt. In Zacharias ' s Crown Land petition of 3 June 1800 he said he was staying with his brother Edy and that he had four brothers residing in Lincoln County. Two other contemporary Burtch United Empire Loyalists are Charles and Nathan Burtch of Burford.

In conclusion, some assumptions about Mercy Burtch's family associations have more credibility that others, but in the final reckoning there is no definitive proof for any of them. $. Jlt.

BURTCH/BRADT ADJOINING LAND HOLDINGS

The partial 1812 map of Louth Township below showing the respective land holdings of two of the Burtch brothers in relation to the land of Peter Bradt and his wife Mercy Burtch Bradt is another piece of evidence helping to reinforce the sibling relationship between Mercy and the Burtch brothers who settled nearby on the Niagara peninsula.
