WILLARD

Nancy Willard was born in Pennsylvania between 1800 and 1810.1 It is unclear what brought John Allen and Nancy Willard together for their 11 Feb 1830 marriage in Perry County, Ohio. 2 At one point in about 1830 the Willards and the Allens may have lived in adjacent Ohio counties (Guernsey and Muskingum).3 Nancy Willard may have been the daughter of Isaac Willard of Guernsey and Monroe Counties, Ohio.4 It is unlikely the families were acquainted before coming to Ohio as the Allens previously lived in Culpeper County, Virginia, and Isaac Willard was from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.5

YOUNG

In Europe the Youngs came from some yet to be determined location where German was spoken, perhaps Biersdorf, near Daaden, Rheinland, Germany. 1 The name was originally "Jung," later anglicized to "Young." If indeed Daaden was their home, without accessing the Daaden Church Records it is not possible to construct a reliable early genealogy of this Young family.

The Youngs entered the Colonies through the port of Philadelphia and settled in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.2 It is not known if this was their first home in America. Several members of the Jung family immigrated a few years apart winding up in the same Hunterdon County area. Michael Jung arrived 26 October 1741 on the Snow Molly;3

Abraham Jung 15 September 1749 on the Edinburgh;4 William Jung on the Rowand on 29 September 1753; and John Engel (aged 40) and Henrich Jung (aged 48) three days later 2 October 1753 on the Edinburgh. 5

The Young lines of descent as suggested by Theodore F. Chambers in Early Germans in New Jersey are not etched in stone.6 Mr. Chambers himself used the caveats "perhaps" and "probably." Many later researchers have treated his associations as proven.

The patriarch may have been one Abraham Jung. His wife was Gertrout Catharina, and he was an elder in the Alexandria German Reformed Church between 1771 and 1780. Apparently Abraham and Gertrout Young had a number of sons, among them, Abraham Jr. 7

Abraham Jr. was married to Anna Veronica Wagner, and was probably the father of Jacob Jung. Jacob and his wife Maria, whom he had married about 1778, had children baptized at the Alexandria church in the 1780's and 1790's, among them was yet another Abraham. This Abraham was bom26July1785.8

Probably shortly after 1792 Jacob Young moved his family to Buffalo Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. His will was written or probated 26 January 1800 in Northumberland County. It mentioned his wife Maria and children whom he failed to name. 9

In 1806 in Mifflenburg, Pennsylvania, Abraham Young, son of Jacob, married Catharine Kerstetter. 10 Purportedly Catharine was the daughter of John Martin Kerstetter and Elizabeth Reichard. 11 During the War of 1812-1814 Abraham Young served under Captain John Bergstresser in the Pennsylvania Militia and for which service he received a pension in 1871. 12

Between 1807 and 1831 the couple had twelve children. 13 Catharine may have died before 1850, as in the 1850 U.S. Census for East Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania, Abraham is shown living with a much younger Catharine who is 28 years old. 14 The census taker may have made a mistake in recording Catharine's age as Abraham Young's War of 1812 Pension Application mentions only one wife, 15 or the twenty-eight year old Catharine may have had some relationship to Abraham other than wife. In subsequent East Buffalo Township censuses (1860 and 1870) Abraham with no accompanying wife was living in the household of his son Levi Young. 16

Abraham Young died 13 May 1876. 17 A Union County, Pennsylvania, deed enumerates his heirs.18 Abraham and Catharine's third son, Samuel Young, was born 28 or 29 September 1812 in East Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania. 19

On 11 March 1837 while living in Union County, Samuel Young married Lea Brown,20

and in early 1840 they had a son, Simon, born there. 21 Shortly thereafter the family moved to Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, where Lea died in 1840 or early 1841. 22

Samuel Young wasted no time in finding a new wife. On 20 July 1841 in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, he married Catharine, daughter of John and Elizabeth Graul. 23

Sometime before 1850 Samuel and Catharine relocated to Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio. 24 This was not a major move as the two townships were not many miles apart.

Samuel ' s sister Elizabeth Bogenreif and his oldest brother Jacob Young also lived in Pickaway County.25 Besides farming, Samuel Young was a tailor and a member of the United Brethren Church. 26

Samuel and Catharine Young had ten children, the youngest of whom was Emma Alice Youn~, born 28 April 1861.27 Samuel Young died 12 March 1896 and Catharine died 5 February 1898. 8 Both are buried in the Hitler Ludwig Cemetery in Pickaway County, Ohio.

Emma Alice Young married John C. Allen 6 March 1879 at her parent's home in Washington Township, Pickaway County.29 Emma Alice (Young) Allen died 30 January 1922 at Prosperity, Jasper County, Missouri, and along with her husband is buried in the Pleasant View/Shiloh Cemetery north of Baxter Springs, Kansas.30
