From the Pastor

Across Time and Space While I was ‘wrecking my brain’ contemplating

what I could write about the third core value of the NALC, “Traditionally Grounded”, I took a little break to read one of the many newsletters I receive each month. This one was from a two-point parish alongside Highway 30 in Eastern Iowa – a beloved place where I spent 13 months (right out of seminary) as ‘supply pastor’. The parish was in such disarray that the then-Bishop threatened to dissolve the faith community. I was their ‘last shot at survival’ considering they had been served by very part-time in-terim pastors for over seven years. Off we went… Today, some 22 years later, by the grace of God the congregation is strong and thriving. Natu-rally, I read their newsletter with interest and in detail.

What caught my eye this time around was a wedding announcement as well as a note about a Baptism. ‘Tim’ is getting married next week and ‘Peter’ just celebrated the Baptism of his first child. Tim and Peter where small boys when I served their parish and I was the first pastor who invited them to come up for a children’s sermon. Their families belong to the smaller of the two congregations and sometimes one of them would be the only child coming up for the children’s message. Well, I was out to save the world, like all new pastors, and more than once would I swoop up little Timmy, hold him on my lap and talk. Peter was a few years older and I remember teaching him how to properly acolyte – he was small enough to enjoy the

challenge and used to grin broadly each time he managed to extinguish all candles without a second or third attempt. About ten years ago, when I was the guest preacher at a parish event, both came up to me and told me that they remembered the ‘special treatment’ they received from me due to the fact that they usually were my lone ‘material’. And now a wedding and a Baptism! We clergy do choke at these thoughts, believe it or not!

For the NALC to be “traditionally grounded” means that we understand and appreciate what has been valued all along and that we are committed to passing it along to the next generation so they too can be steeped in that which makes for salvation. While forging ahead as a church body, we understand that there are some matters which are not open for discussion. Yes, we do use the traditional language for addressing God. Then there are the Creeds - which were discussed, fought over and hammered out in detail hundreds of years ago to set a parameter for what it means to be a Christian community.

As I like to say: some things are automatically ‘in’ and some things have to be automatically ‘out’ even if we

want to allow ourselves to think ‘outside the box’. We will not re-negotiate whether Jesus is the Son of God or whether the Church ought to believe in the bodily resurrection on the last day. Now, of course, one may make such a claim and people do it all the time – but such puts one outside of what it means to be a follower of the Christ of God. authoritative source and norm for proclamation, faith and life.

Likewise, as Lutherans we adhere to the confessional writings of the Reformation. These Confessions are written, formal statements which declare our convictions based on Scripture and are the result of more than 50 years of earnest endeavors of first-generation Lutherans to give understanding and clarity to what we believe God would have us know. Whether we discuss the Sacraments, the distinction between God’s Word as Law and Gospel or the authority of clergy, these Confessions are our guide.

As people who know that God’s interaction with humanity long preceded the Reformation, of course, we see ourselves in continuation and connection with those who were first called to faithfulness, all the way back to Father Abraham! That continuation and connection also calls us to be in dialogue with other Christians and most certainly compels us to share the Gospel in season and out of season wherever we are given the opportunity. Therefore you have heard of the NALC’s application to the Lutheran World Federation; you know we share an ‘open’ Communion table with all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with and under the bread; we are in ecumenical conversations with the Anglican Church in North America (not to be confused with the Episcopal Church), the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church and we are in inter-Lutheran conversations with the Missouri Synod and Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ. Our partnership with the Lutheran Churches in Ethiopia and Tanzania has already brought forth many blessings for all involved.

To be sure: none of this is to say that consequently other church bodies do not care about this tradition we speak of, or dismiss it altogether. What we however are saying is that there are treasurers and blessings that have been handed to us of which we want to be sure that they are maintained, cared for and appreciated in such a way that the core of the Gospel does not get distorted or cheapened. Will we be successful? Probably not to the extend we hope to be! Will there be times when we will be utterly misunderstood…you betcha!

God has handed us a pearl of great cost – the Gospel of Jesus Christ – with all of its challenges and promises, its assurance, invitation and even its raw bluntness.

This Pentecost season gives us many examples from the Gospel of Luke each week that show the single-mindedness and expectation of obedience the Lord has for us. By the same token, we are following a great cloud of witnesses, many who have suffered and died for the faith. It now is our privilege and task to hand that faith on to the little Tims and Peters we encounter.

We have a foundation on which to build. PZ+

Stewardship Musings Here is a very telling little

story I came across many years ago. I believe its wisdom is timeless. Pastor Z

Years ago, a young man knelt with his pastor and prayed as he committed to God his tithe. His first week’s pay was $10.00 and the tithe was $1.00. As he grew older he became more prosperous and his tithe was $7.00 a week, then $10.00. He moved to another city and soon his tithe was $100.00 a week, then $200.00, then $500.00.

One day the man sent his old pastor a letter, “Please come and see me.” The pastor arrived at the man’s house and they had a good time talking over old times. Finally, the man came to the point. “You remember that

promise I made years ago to tithe. How can I get released?” The pastor wanted to know why the man wanted to be released of that promise.

“It’s like this,” the man replied, “when I made the promise to God I had to give only $1.00 but now it is $500.00 per week. I just can’t afford to give money away like that!” The old pastor looked at the man and smiled. “I am afraid we cannot get released from the promise, but there is something we can do. We can kneel and ask God to shrink your income so you can afford to give $1.00 once again.”

Thank You – Stewards …to Judy Trenhaile for taking photos and keeping the photo display in the basement up to date. …to Luella Pagel for watching the newspapers and adding to our files of obituaries kept in the library. …to Bonnie and Virl Deal for watering our red geraniums around the church building. …to Carol Koschmeder for decorating our fellowship hall many times during the year. …to the members of the Altar Guild for preparing the Lord’s table for us and for looking after many

important little details concerning our worship services. … to the Evangelism Committee for all their work with the new Pictorial Directory and to all who came to have their picture taken. If you were unable to do so, you may still submit your picture to be included. Also, the company will be in the area to take pictures at neighboring congregations and you may go there to have your picture taken; call the office for specific information. …to everyone who helped in any way with the clean-up of our ‘wet mess’ in the church basement following the deluge in mid-June. The carpets were cleaned and we are working on fixing the damage done to the walls. Thanks!

Did You Know

….that Emmanuel participated in the Bolan Community VBS? There were 95 students and 61 helpers and lots of fun amidst learning, was had by all. …that Thrivent Financial for Lutheran, based on a vote by those who hold policies and purchase products, will now be open to Christians of all denominations? …that the NALC has an official response to the Supreme Court’s decision on Marriage equality? Here is Bishop Bradosky’s comment: “While the decision of the court is not a complete surprise we were hoping for more than a ruling aligned with the popular opinion of our culture. Many of the basic tenets of our legal system are rooted in biblical principles. The laws of our nation were once established on transcendent truth and not simply what citizens were willing to tolerate. Contemporary decisions seem to be based on only the most recent cases, philosophies and political will. The historical foundation and connection to biblical principles is seldom raised or followed. The prevailing attitude is that the wisdom of man in contemporary culture is far superior to the wisdom of God.

There are few in our culture bold enough to speak out against the slow erosion of the Biblical understanding of marriage and the family that each of these decisions bring. The recent decisions of the Supreme Court should cause us to raise some important

questions. We believe in equality and justice for all people, but can justice be separated from righteousness? Can one speak out for the biblical understanding of justice without also speaking out for the biblical understanding of righteousness? Can acceptance and tolerance of behaviors in opposition to the Word and will of God be considered equal to those behaviors that are in agreement with scriptural teaching?

We must never simply acquiesce to such rulings but engage in constructive dialog, consistent prayer, biblical study, loving obedience to Christ and faithful caring for our neighbor. Our response is grounded in the Great Commission, making disciples obedient to Christ, teaching the faith and trusting in the constant presence of Jesus. We must remain all the more committed to influence our culture and the world by faithfully pro-

claiming Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of the world, boldly living what we confess.

While our pastors and congregations will not participate in the blessing of same sex unions and continue to uphold in our preaching and teaching the Biblical standards for marriage and sexuality, we have an even more positive word to offer. I commend to you the ecumenical statement on marriage and the family. (http://thenalc.org/educational-resources/) This is a per-fect time for our pastors to preach and teach about the biblical understanding of marriage and the family making full use of both the Old and New Testament ref-erences. I am confident that our pastors and congrega-tions in the NALC will continue to boldly proclaim God's truth in love, offering the forgiveness, mercy and healing that only Christ can provide. We will continue to pray for all men, women and children affected by these decisions as well as those responsible for making them.” (June 28, 2013)

Emmanuel NALCW Gathering June 12, 2013

The June ENALCW business gathering was opened with the reading of the purpose. Secretary minutes from the May gathering were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was given. There is $3263.71 in checking and $6550.19 in savings. There was a deposit from fellowship not included and several budgeted items yet to be paid.

Old business was discussed. First was kitchen cleanup- Charlotte will post a list of jobs needing to be done in the kitchen/serving room areas. One or two people at a time can work on those jobs as able during June and July. There was some discussion whether we may need more cupboards or shelving for storage and/or what can be done with existing cupboards that have mildew smells. It may be possible to apply for a grant to help with those items. The deadline for that would be September. We would need to get an idea of costs related to those projects. A better idea may be had after the cleaning is further progressed. One of the refrigerators is possibly needing replacement. We will have someone come and look at it to determine if it can be fixed or whether it needs to be replaced.

The second item of old business was the yearbooks. Since the year is half over, we have decided it may be best to wait until our September gathering and add dates for 2014. That way when we send them out, they will have the latest updates and be good through the end of 2014.

The third item of old business was thank you’s. One was from LSI for the 5 quilts that were sent to them. The other was from LWR for the money sent to purchase mosquito nets through the malaria initiative.

New business consisted of the Golden confirmation celebration that will take place on August 25th. All arrangements have been taken care of: invitations

Emmanuel’s Epistle 7 July - August 2013

have been sent out, the catered dinner will take place at the Grafton Community Center, a coffee hour will be held before and after worship service, and a possible silent auction may be held. The women of the church have been asked if they would consider “underwriting” the cost of the meal for the event. This basically means that they would be responsible for paying the cost of the community center and the caterer. In return, they would receive the monies collected from the offerings and the silent auction. After some discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and passed that the women agree to do the underwriting of the meal expenses for the Golden confirmation.

The second item of new business was the traveling evangelism academy that will be taking place on July 24th at Emmanuel in Grafton. This is a pan Lutheran gathering involving clergy coming to Grafton for the afternoon and an evening session for clergy and lay ministry.

Third item of new business was an e-mail received from Sherrie Palan of The Women’s Council of the NALC. She is from Texas and is the Iowa Mission District representative and contact person. She sent an informational e-mail about the upcoming Women of the NALC gathering on August 7 in Pennsylvania and encouraged anyone wanting to come to check out the information on the NALC website. More information can be found at www.wnalc.org.

Offering was collected and the business meeting was adjourned. Pastor Z led our Bible Study, as we finished the study of the Lord’s Prayer.

Lesson 5:Give us this day our daily bread. This asks us to check our needs versus wants. What is daily bread? What do we need to make us happy? God always provides, but it may not be in the way that we want or expect. Our daily bread may be defined as the basic necessities for sustaining what God has given us.

Lesson 6: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Forgiveness is hard, yet important. It is the most holy gift from God. How do we that God has forgiven us? By our ability to forgive others.

Lesson 7: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. The video from Walter Wangerin explained that this part of the prayer is our attempt to have God keep temptation from us, to not allow us to fail. Sin divides us from our faith so we are asking for help to deliver us from temptation, to save us from times of trial.

Lesson 8: When an ending is also a beginning. The ending of the prayer is “Amen.” In Aramaic, the word means “verily”. This word is not used as an ending, but a beginning-the beginning of our trip. We believe what we have prayed and are assured that it will be so.

We thank Pastor Z for leading our Bible Study and have learned more about our common prayer in the past few months. Our next Women’s gathering will be in September and we will begin a new Bible Study at that time. Keep watch in upcoming newsletters and bulletins for more information. New members are always welcome. Secretary, Sharon Hulshizer
