The Epistle - May

PARISH BEACH WEEKEND Sunday, June 2 we will honor our acolytes, who assist the priest with the worship service. During the procession, they carry the cross, torches, and flags, and help the priest to prepare for Communion. As acolytes, youth cultivate leadership and responsibility within the church. We are very proud of these young members of our parish and hope that you will thank them for the time they devote to this very important ministry. The Search and Nominating Committee for the VIII Bishop Diocesan of East Carolina wants your feedback about the diocese and wants to hear your hopes for its future and its next bishop. The committee invites you to a LISTENING SESSION at 7 p.m. May 16 at St. John's, which includes all Episcopal- ians in the Upper Cape Fear Deanery. The information you provide helps the committee create a profile of our diocese that will reach potential nominees across the country. Details are still unfolding, but at 7 p.m. May 31, the Army Ground Forces Band presents "An Evening of Brass" at St. John's! They will perform classical, jazz, and contemp- orary chamber works for both large and small brass en- sembles. Our soldiers will feature as conductors, soloists, and arrangers who arranged these pieces specifically for the band. Check our website and Tuesday Headlines for more information. For Christians, Pentecost marks the date when the church is draped in the color red, symbolizing joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve Apostles and empowers us as disciples to continue the ministry of Christ in the world. German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called Pentecost "das liebliche Fest" — the lovely Feast. His words complement another commonly used analogue: we often refer to Pentecost as "the birthday of the Church." In celebration, St. John's Pentecost service on May 19 will feature a sermon by St. John's children during the 10:30 a.m. service and cake in Hauser Hall after service. St. John’s youth will be our guest worship leaders on May 5 and our graduating seniors will give testimonial sermons during the services. Join us for worship and help us recognize our seniors and their achievements. The children's choir will also perform during the 10:30 a.m. service. If I couldn’t spell diocese before — and I couldn’t — I sure canspell it now.

What a great weekend for the Diocesan History Day.Friday started early with setup of tables for displays in HauserHall, tables in Smithson Hall for lunch on Saturday, information bags being loaded, and sprucing up of the KyleHouse for tours and for Sunday’s coffee hour.

Friday evening the group, and what a great group ofpeople it was, all gathered at Sherefe’ restaurant for awonderful dinner. Who was in this group, you might ask?Well, the representation of our East North Carolina Diocesewas great. Cities represented were, Cameron, Chapel Hill,Fayetteville, Hillsborough, Raleigh, Tarboro, Wilson,Warrington and Wilmington.

Saturday morning began early with all hands on deck toready the morning treats and coffee, welcome and registerfolks, and hand out information bags. We all gathered in thesanctuary for opening prayer by Bishop Peter Lee and afascinating presentation by the Rev. Dr. Robert Prichard aboutthe history of our diocese (there’s that word again) and how wegot where we are today. He cleared up some misconceptionsand myths in a humorous tone to keep the history light andmoving. With Dr. Prichard were the Rev. Brooks Graebner ofHillsborough and the Rev. Ron Abrams of St. James,Wilmington.

After Rev. Prichard’s presentation, a rare, engraved printwas presented to St. John’s Kyle House by Robin Kelly and Sr.Warden Hal Broadfoot. Called “View by Moonlight NearFayetteville,” the print was originally drawn by Joshua Shawand engraved by John Hill in Philadelphia, circa 1819-1820. It'sa beautiful piece and a welcome addition to the Kyle Housewalls.

Rounding off the lecutures, our own Bruce Daws gave afascinating presentation on St. John’s church and her history.Next it was off to lunch in Smithson Hall where Rev. JohnFrasier, dean of the Upper Cape Fear Deanery and rector of St.Paul’s in the Pines gave the blessing. Box lunches were servedand the best darn chocolate chip cookies from Janet Beyer.

After lunch, tours of Fayetteville and tours of St. John’swere given. Were we tired yet? No sir, it was off to the F.I.L.I.(Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry) for cocktails, hors

"Old Roots, NewShoots" was the titlegiven to my articlelast month. On April20 we examined theold roots of ourparish and diocese

as we explored the first five years of our existenceunder the oversight of the Bishop of Virginia. It wasa pleasure to welcome our Bishop Provisional, PeterLee, to St. John’s on a day when visitors fromthroughout the state came to explore the commonhistory of the three dioceses that currently composethe Episcopal Church the State of North Carolina. Please join me in thanking all of the members of ourparish who helped host the various eventssurrounding History Day. The experiences weoffered will likely form the impression our visitorswill have of St. John’s and of Fayetteville for the nextdecade.

One of the keepsakes that we created for the daywas a bookmark (pictured right) with an image ofChrist commissioning the disciples before heascended into heaven. This image offers a windowinto our history.

The image of Christ commissioning the disciplesalso provides a window for our individual andcorporate journeys as the people of St. John’s today. As we observe Ascension and Pentecost this monthwe are reminded that Christ calls Christiansthroughout the ages to continue his ministry ofteaching, healing and service in the world thusproviding new shoots that embody the ministry ofChrist today. It is both humbling and a bitfrightening to be confronted with the reality that theGod of the universe trusts us with the authority andthe responsibility to be his representatives in theworld. Those who participate in a weekly reuniongroup as part of Cursillo are reminded weekly that“Christ is counting on you.” The ministry of St.John’s in the coming year will be embodied in theprograms and ministries that we support throughour time, talent and treasure. This year we are

disciplining ourselves to plan and calendar eventsfor the next program year by June. We will also seekto identify leaders and volunteers to support ourvarious ministries by June. This early planning willallow us to provide timely communication ofupcoming events in the life of our parish.

I encourage eachmember of our parish tovolunteer to help with atleast three events in thecoming year. If you have aninterest in serving in aspecific area of ministry, please call the lay leaderwho coordinates thatministry. (Find the insertedleaflet with a list ofcontacts.) We are blessedwith a bountiful abundanceof gifts and talent in ourparish. I pray that God willguide us as we develop avision that will help usfocus our energy andministry in the service ofChrist in this place.

On May 5, we willrecognize the newestgraduates who have beennourished by the ancient roots of faith at St. Johns. As we recognize our graduating seniors, they will beoutward and visible signs of the new shoots that aregrafted into our ancient roots. Our senior preacherswill bear witness to our faithfulness in supportingthe newly baptized in the faith. Finally we will offerprayers for our seniors as they prepare to establishnew roots that will help them develop their gifts andgrow into the full stature of Christ.
