QectorDear Friends,

One of the greatest books ever written is ashort book called 101 Reasons to be

Episcopalian by Louie Crew. Many of youare "cradle Episcopalians," Episcopaliansfrom birth who have always been familiarwith our liturgy and language; others of you like myself - have become Episcopalians bychoice after growing up in another or severalother denominations. Either way, we findthat this theology and this style of worship, asGoldilocks said, "Is just right!"

We have been described as "a merry lot.Not humble ... but almost always merry andself-deprecating." Among God's children,we are the first to laugh at our foibles.Maybe that's a way of dealing with the God'soverwhelming holiness in human space. Inthe larger world it takes humor to explain toothers why we are so determined to keep theuse of symbols and rituals, icons and arcanelexicon in our worship. As one person said,"It is the poetry of our faith, not its variousdogmas, that speaks to Episcopalians. It is theelegance of a doctrine... the music of a holyname the cry of an eagle in the chant of apsalm the holy aesthetic of our worship"that catches us. Weare not like otherdenominations - nor do we seek to be - wetake pride in whom and what we are. And soin the midst of summer - I share with yousome things that make· us so unique andspecial:

1. When Anglicanism is at its best, itsliturgy, its poetry, its music, and itslife can create a world of wonderin which it is very easy to fall inlove with God.

2. From smells and bells to speakingin tongues - we have it all.

3. We have a faith not afraid toreason and reason not ashamed toadore.

4. The seasons are color coded.5. At our best, Episcopalians can

respectfully disagree about a greatmany things - and still break breadtogether.

6. My mind is Protestant and myspirit is liturgical. Where otherthan to the Book of CommonPrayer can my worship go and stillhave both be happy?

7. Where faith is God's gift to us, notour gift to God.

8. Our eighth Sacrament: Fellowshipand Good Food.

9. Where else can you be considereda "young person" until you are 40years old?

10. This is the only church that is aslovingly loony as your family.

11. We use prayer that is time tested.12. Tired of hell fire and brimstone?

Try incense.13. Episcopalians believe in

moderation in all things, includingmoderation.

14. One of the perks ofmembersmp inour parish is the exercise. Yourheart rate elevates with all thestanding, kneeling, processing, bowing, passing the peace, reciting, crossing one's self and

Page 3: The Epistle August 2011

singing. Fortunately there is sometime for a pulse check during thesermon and readings.

15. When you count acolytes, Chalicebearers, lay readers, ushers, greeters, nursery people, altarguild, choir, and so on, there aremore people involved in anEpiscopal service than in anyother. And there are more

opportunities to be involved.

It seems that "ours is the perfect churchfor people who aren't perfect."

Blessings!

FROM THE PRAYER SHAWLMINISTRY:

The Prayer Shawl Group continues toknit and crochet at an amazing pace. Infact, we are accumulating quite a stock offinished items. Since we last reported onour efforts, Marion Lanham has joined ourgroup and between Marion and HarriottGough, we do not have to worry aboutever running low. These two women arespeed demons when it comes tocrocheting.

We continue to make baby blankets forthe Center for Children to use in their

Healthy Families program and restocktheir supply when the need arises. Perhapsyou have seen an article in the MalylandIndependent about this very importantprogram that connects with at-riskfamilies. We also continue to supplyblankets to all babies who are baptized atSt. Paul's.

We recently started a new prayershawl ministry at Collington EpiscopalCenter for those in their dementia and

skilled care unit. Kay Laughton reportsthat they have been received with joy.

And just a reminder to all parishioners,if you know of anyone (this does not haveto be a parishioner) who is ill or in need ofcomfort, you are invited to take a prayer

PARISH LIFE IS EXCITING

The Parish Life Vestry boat captain andcrew are responsible for planning, andorganizing activities focused on raisingmoney for the Parish, to support operationsand programs. Of course the other benefit offund raising events is the tremendousopportunity for fellowship and communityinteraction. Existing Parish Life activitiesinclude the Silent Auction, Yard Sale, BlueCrabs events, Labor Day supper, RolandKeech, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament andChristmas Wreath sale. The Silent Auctionand Yard Sale have been very successful thisyear, thanks to the many contributions of timeand talent by St. Paul's parishioners.

Several new events are being planned. On September 24th, we will host an"Appraiser Fair" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Local appraisers will be on hand to place a

Refreshments/Lunchwill be available for purchase while youwait for your turn with the appraisers. We hope to get the community to bringtheir collectibles for appraisal. Closer tothe date, each St. Paul's member withemail, will be asked to help us advertisethe event by forwarding an email toeveryone on their email list. Mark yourcalendar now and start planning whichvaluables you want evaluated.

There is some interest in having a St.Paul's Dance in October or November.

Weare looking for persons interested inhelping to facilitate a dance at St. Paul's inthe fall. It could be a square dance or aregular dance with a dj or live band. Ifyou could serve on this committee, let meknOw.

Another effort currently planned is toprovide parishioners with blue "St. Paul's"tee shirts or golf shirts with the St. Paul'slogo. Tee shirts will sell for $10 ($12 for2XL and 3XL) and golf shirts for $15 ($18for 2XL and 3XL). Before placing anorder, we need to know if there is aninterest in purchasing shirts. Pleasecontact Lorraine Berry,[email protected] or 240-776-4021of your interest and the sizes you willpurchase as soon as possible.

CONTINUING BIBLE STUDY:Jesus in the Gospels - 2011-12

Beginning in September, the ongoingadult Bible Study Group will continue itsstudy of the four Gospels using materialfrom the Disciple series by Leander Keck. The subject matter of the Gospels is Jesus, not just about the man himself but alsoabout the meaning of a whole event whosecenter is Jesus. That event induded Jesus'

relation to the Jewish religion he inherited,to the circle of disciples around him and tothe early Christians who believed in himafter his death and resurrection. The Jesus

of the Gospels is not a detached figure buta person whose meaning cannot beseparated from his impact on hiscontemporaries and on those who believedin him later. Our study of the Jesus asfound in the four gospels is designed tostimulate thoughtful reflection so that youcan come to your own conclusions aboutwhat your following Jesus calls for. Bystudying the four gospels simultaneouslywe will see that the New Testament is notthe result of a solo voice but instead has

the richness of a quartet as each Gospeltells the story of Jesus to a differentaudience with a different intent.

This in-depth Bible study is open toeveryone - and will meet three out of fourTuesday evenings a month at 7pm. It doesnot require anything but a willingness tohave read the designated passages fr~m theBible ahead of the meeting and to havepaid attention to the suggestions of thingsto look for while reading. Join us andbring your questions, convictions, doubtsand curiosity.

Scripture was meant to be readpublicly, in the faith communityassembled for worship and for instruction. We will continue to follow that tradition at

our weekly gatherings. If you areinterested in learning more about the Bibleand more about the event of the person ofJesus - and doing it among friends in acomfortable and sharing environment please join us. Starting date and locationwill be announced in the next Epistle andin the Sunday bulletins in September.
