In the heart of every experience lives the potential for a powerful story.

Stories inspire, engage, educate, amuse, frighten, anger, warn and unite us. In an age when experiences are often distilled to a single image, sound bite, or word count, it’s time to release the power of the well-crafted tale, enhanced by sublime melody and vibrant musicality.

This year we invite you and your students to unplug, open up and get to the heart of the matter by engaging in stories that unwind in unpredictable and wonderful ways. These stories express the nuances of human character and wit, set to original and timeless soaring music.

It’s time to find our common threads, beautifully woven into our uniqueness, and journey with characters both familiar and strange. San Francisco Opera Guild offers an exciting line-up of programs this year poised to do just that.

• We welcome the youngest artists to marvel at our masterful musical storytellers as they unwind the exploits of timeless opera characters in Sing a Story.

• Older students will revel in Rossini’s dynamic music and witty, socially relevant telling of The Barber of Seville while they perform onstage beside professionals in Opera à la Carte.

• Our residencies are on fire with storytelling and composition experiences that explore different learning modes and expression as we add movement, puppetry and fine art to complement Book to Bravo! and Voices for Social Justice.

• Come to the Opera and hear the sublime grandeur of exciting new works and reimagined telling of old masterpieces as we expand our San Francisco Opera Dress Rehearsal and Live Performance programming!

• And finally—our young artist programs continue to flourish, providing after-school and summer training in music, drama and true ensemble through Madrigals, Opera Scouts and Summer Conservatory.

So, what’s your story? We’re listening! Share it with us and we will partner with your school community to raise everyone’s voice.

It’s the Year of the Story—don’t let it pass you by!

Caroline Altman, Director of EducationSan Francisco Opera Guild We give voice to potential.

Opera à la Carte: The Barber of Seville by Gioachino RossiniUncovering themes of hidden identity, inner values and following one’s heart, this comic opera features the antics of a clever and lively barber and his ability to outsmart the aristocracy, and help the leading lady identify her true love. The score includes some of the most famous, beautiful and exciting music in the opera canon.

A rare opportunity for your students to sing alongside industry professionals in a reduced version of a classic mainstage opera. Masterfully designed for young audiences, the English-language production features three professional singers, one pianist, 10 students in speaking and acting roles and an optional student chorus of any size. Students memorize lines in advance, are coached by artists in a dress rehearsal and then — with props, scenery and costumes — perform for their school. When all grades learn the chorus, Opera à la Carte becomes a community project — a chance for the entire school to sing together.

Space and timePerformance takes place in an auditorium or multipurpose room. Student actors and chorus must be available for a 75-minute dress rehearsal prior to the performance. A piano in good working condition is required.

This program requires a designated teacher or parent volunteer responsible for casting and rehearsing student actors and confirming all details. Participating teachers can expect to work with students 1-3 hours per week leading up to the performance. Student actors must be chosen and lines must be memorized two weeks prior to the performance.

ScheduleSeptember 28, 2020–December 4, 2020. Preliminary preparation and teacher training begins in early September.

CastingStudent actors can be in grades 4-12. Final performance is attended by the entire school.

Investment$450 per classroom. Additional $100 for STEM Component. Financial aid is available for qualifying schools.

This program is made possible, in part, by generous contributions from the following Chapters of San Francisco Opera

Guild: East Bay, Marin, Peninsula, Sonoma and the San Jose Opera Guild.

New this year: STEM COMPONENTThis year we are excited to offer an additional STEM project for students to examine the elements of opera that engage Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; a great way to involve more students in this dynamic program!

CREATE!

Voices for Social JusticeStudents create a musical story based on the challenges they face every day in their neighborhoods, communities and greater society. Focusing on positive conflict resolution, they envision non-violent ways to deal with concerns and obstacles. In addition, they put their energy toward an artistic creation that shows the power that music and theater has to reflect upon and generate change in a dynamic world. Their original works, meaningful and authentic, allow students to form compassionate opinions and express their true voices in important ways. The program culminates in a student performance of their original work.

Want to unite your class in a creative project that allows all skill sets and personalities to shine? Then these creative residencies are for you! Structured over 12-16 weeks, available in both English and Spanish, these programs bring out the creative artist in all students, encouraging them to engage with their curricula, communities and one another in meaningful ways. A team of two teaching artists partners with the classroom teacher to cultivate students’ understanding of literature, history, culture and social issues. Artists guide students in expressing their interpretations through the development of original songs, scenes and creative expression. The students then rehearse and present their works in a culminating performance. Along the way, they build self-confidence and gain skills in writing, composing, singing, acting, producing and collaborating. A great way to inspire more shy students to speak up and become leaders, while focusing those who may need it.

Book to Bravo! Focusing on a story from their academic curriculum, students use interpretative skills and their own imaginative voices to bring literature to life through music and theater. Based in language arts or social studies curricula, this program integrates easily into the classroom and builds critical thinking and collaborative skills while encouraging students to step into someone else’s shoes. Students structure a story, create their own script, write their own music and perform their original operetta!

Lyrical Expression ResidencyDesigned for the classroom that might seek a wider variety of expression modes, this new program explores storytelling through music paired with movement, puppetry, tableau or expressive art. Ideal for classrooms with different learning styles, a diverse ESL population or curriculum focused on more abstract or non-verbal learning, each program is designed to fit the needs of the individual class. Program culminates in a performance or sharing of created story.

Space and timePrograms consist of 10 to 14 weekly class sessions of 90 minutes, a performance for the school and a 45-minute follow-up reflection session. Students work on additional assignments between artist visits. Participating teachers can expect to devote 3-4 hours per week (including artist visit) to the program. Access to performance space and piano in good working order is necessary.

Lucinda y las Flores de la NochebuenaA free family opera for schools and the community. By Evan Mack and Joshua McGuire

Based upon the popular Mexican folk tale of the first poinsettia, this lively interactive and heartwarming story of perseverance, transformation and a holiday miracle will set your season aglow!

Lucinda and her mother traditionally make a blanket together to give as a Christmas gift, but when mother grows very ill it looks like they won’t finish in time for the celebration. As Lucinda finds the strength to attend the celebration alone, with just wildflowers to share, a holiday miracle teaches her that giving from the heart is more important than the gift itself. A multi-cultural community offering in Spanish and English.

Paired with study materials and our very special Poinsettia Project, your students can put themselves in the story and celebrate their own values and strengths along the way!
