Greetings for Christmas & the New Year by Sven TratschittOn behalf of our President and Union Com-mander, Senator h.c. Wolfgang Steinhardt, Iwant to take the forthcoming Christmas andNew Year as an opportunity to personallyand warmly thank all those who have helpedto make 2013 another successful year in thehistory of the Lazarus Union.

In March 2013 the Lazarus Union was regis-tered as a Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) at the United Nations (UN).

On 15 May 2013 the Band of the LazarusUnion (in all its formations: as a quartet, anoctet, a big band and a marching band) wasaccepted as a Member of the Vienna BrassBand Association.

On 21 June 2013 Count Hans-ChristianWilczek gave his consent by decree toKreuzenstein Castle near Vienna becomingthe titular home of the Lazarus UnionKnighthood of Honour.

The Lazarus Union can also look back on anumber of its own events and operations in2013.

I want to list a few of them here:

The Investiture of Knights of Honourof the Lazarus Union in Vienna /Austria

The concert "Organ of the Nations" inthe Rudolfsheim Parish Church / Aus-tria

Disaster / flood operations in Austriaand Germany

The Civil Protection Helper courserun by the CSLI group formation‘The Sword of Freedom’ in Germany

The 9th CSLI Marshaller seminar and1st Helper Course in Stockerau / Aus-tria

Help is help, no matter what the organizationconcerned! In its tradition as a non-partisanand interdenominational organization, theLAZARUS UNION founded the ‘LazarusCross of the Union’ as a visible thank youfor ALL benefactors that have given sup-port, through donations large or small, to anorganization of their choice.

To all the members, friends and supporters ofthe Union Lazarus who made all this possibleI would like once again, on behalf of theLazarus Union, to give you my warmestthanks!

Let us also in 2014 "create new perspectivestogether". In this spirit I wish you all a MerryChristmas and a happy and prosperous 2014.

Yours Sven Tratschitt OMLJ

Historic Boat cruise by Hans-Rudolph GriesOn Sunday the 30th June 2013 the historicside-wheeler, ‘Stadt Wien’, built in 1938 inthe Korneuburg shipyard, carried us verycomfortably from Krems to Melk. We began, after getting the Captain’s consent, by hoist-ing the Flag of the Austrian Marine Associa-tion.

The saloon had been reserved for a total of30 people, and, after a short speech by thePresident of ÖMV, Anton Karl Skrivanek, this beautiful day’s event was initiated with aglass of sparkling wine. Comrade Ing. Reiter(I hope I have his name correct) who, as Cap-tain, piloted the ship for 8 years, then told ussome anecdotes about it until, passingDürnstein with its many wine and fruit gar-dens and imposing castles, we reached Melk.

But first, in Emmersdorf, many cruise boatsblocked our landing place. For the brass bandthis was no obstacle, they had come over bybus and played on magnificently. Our Presi-dent ‘helped out’ by conducting the playingof The Radetzky March, though unkindcommentators noted that the musicianslooked only at their music!

I myself got hold of tickets for a visit to MelkAbbey. This Benedictine monastery was es-

tablished in the 11th Century under the directcontrol of the Pope. The present baroquebuilding was erected in the years 1702-1746by Jakob Prandtauer. As the symbol of theWachau, it is a UNESCO World HeritageSite. It also houses the oldest schoolinAustria, the Stiftsgymnasium. The guidedtour took 40 minutes and was very interestingand enlightening. After that we took the busback to the pier in Melk.

There waiting for us was the paddle steamer‘Schönbrunn’, which was once the ParadeShip of the DDSG. This ship was built inBudapestin 1912 and recently proudly cele-brated its 100th birthday. The journey down-stream to Krems was much faster than thejourney upstream. Jacket swapping and sug-gesting designs for an appropriate bannerresulted in much hilarity and, with excellentsausages and on-board music, time quicklypassed. So it was that by seven o’clock wewere once again in Krems.

My conclusion: Cultural as well as informa-tive, it was a very beautiful and enjoyableday. A big ‘thank you’ to the organizer. Asmall suggestion: next time the Vienna-Bratislava trip?

Marine Comemoration Day 2013 by Erich KadlecA delegation of our Naval Fellowship Arch-duke Ferdinand Max took part in the Austri-an Marine Association’s Marine Commemo-ration Day.

The event was held in the Handelskai ship-ping centre in beautiful summer weather. Inour Navy blazers we got up quite a sweat! The ceremony this year featured Croatia – onthe occasion of its accession to the EuropeanUnion.

The OMV was supported by MilKdo Viennaas well as the MK Admiral Erzherzog FranzFerdinand. The musical accompaniment wasprovided by the Guards Band under Directorof Music, Major Johann Kausz.

Many guests had come from the Govern-ment, Senior Officers of the Armed Forcesand the Executive. From the Croatian Em-bassy Ambassador Gordan Bakato was pre-sent, as were representatives of other Embas-sies. In addition to delegations from the Aus-trian Naval fellowships, Naval Friends or-ganizations from Croatia, Hungary and Bul-garia also participated.

The festive ÖMV fanfare ‘Freundschaft aufSee’ opened this ceremony by the lake.

After the main parade of Banners the cus-tomary ceremonial addresses followed. Prof.Dieter Winkler spoke on the topic “TheCroatian Adriatic coast – nostalgia and eco-nomic stimulus”.

The Austrian Navy contributed with theirpresence and, through the expansion of the

Port of Pula, is making an important contri-bution to the development of this coastal re-gion. That presence is also significant for thedevelopment of tourism, e.g. Opatia.

After the welcoming address by the Ambas-sador of the Republic of Croatia a hymn byProf. Stefan Hausmann was premiered:‘Republiki Hrvatskoj – put u Europskuuniju.’ – ‘Republic of Croatia on the way tothe European Union’. The hymn was intro-duced by a tamburizza group (the tamburizzais the Croatian national stringed instrument)and performed here by the Burgenland Croa-tian Choir and the Guards Band. The hymnwas dedicated to Ambassador Bakato and acommemorative copy of the score was pre-sented to him.

After a hymn in remembrance of fallen sail-ors, Father Dr. Alexander Lapin D.D. (theOrthodox Military Chaplain) delivered ashort devotion. He was assisted by DeaconGR, Deacon Colonel William Hold, and aCroatian Military Chaplain.

Then followed the ceremonial high point –from the gunboat ‘Niederösterreich’ and thePolice launch in the middle of the Danube, wreaths in memory of the fallen were com-mitted to the waves to the sounds of the tradi-tional song of unity ‘Vom Guten Kameraden’and gun salutes by the artillery piece of‘Reitende Artilleriedivison Nr: 2’. A specialnote was given to the ceremony by the fly-past of two Draken aircraft – it was like theyhad been ordered.

After the official ceremony a relaxed get-together brought proceedings to an end in afriendly atmosphere.

To mark his 75th birthday, PresidentSkrivanek was invited to a reception at theMaria Theresa Barracks Club. Many well-wishers honoured him there.

The CSLI, and with it the Naval FellowshipArchduke Ferdinand Max, thanked him forhis services and friendly cooperation with thepresentation of the Grand Cross of the CSLINavy Cross.

Musical accompaniment to the evening wasprovided by the ‘Original Hoch-undDeutschmeister’ Band lead by Director ofMusic Reinhold Nowotny.

In his speech Major-General Karl Wendytold us about Skrivanek the man, reportingon his many contributions: as a family man,an engineer, an inventor, an officer, a re-searcher and a cosmopolitan.

For almost 40 years Colonel DI KarlSkrivanek served as a Militia Officer, with

aviation engineering one of his specialties. His civilian career was always closely relatedto the Austrian Army. For German industryhe developed a variety of propulsion systems, gas turbines and aviation transmissions. Hisvaluable experience was reflected, amongother things, in the development of the Steyertank family.

His work on mobile medical technology leadto the development and construction of theDRASH tent system (Deployable Rapid As-sembly Shelter)* introduced into the ArmedForces.

His work on projects took him to Italy, Ger-many, Sweden, France, Canada and the Unit-ed States. He was also in China for ten years, and a Visiting Professor at the TechnicalUniversity in Jiangsu.

In recent years Colonel Skrivanek has devot-ed himself to his role as President of theOMV. For this work he has been honouredwith many awards. In a touching acceptancespeech on being awarded the Grand Cross ofthe CSLI Navy Cross, he stressed his desireto continue to work actively for the OMV.

Champagne Order Concert by Friedrich LentnerOn 22 June 2013 a small formation of theLazarus Union Music Corps played in anhistoric setting. The occasion was a gala din-ner hosted by the Austrian delegation of TheOrder of the Slopes of Champange (Ordredes Coteaux de Champagne –www.ordredescoteaux.com ).

The Music Corps ensemble had been re-quested to play mainly Austrian traditionalmarches at a champagne reception in the gar-den of Thürnlhof Castle in the Simmeringdistrict of Vienna. This castle has the nick-name “Napoleon’s Castle” because, in 1809,Napoleon used it as his headquarters duringthe Battle of Aspern. More information can

be found on the Internet or, when visiting thecastle, in the castle museum.

Guests of the Champagne Order, some ofwhom had come from as far away astheTyrol, responded enthusiastically to themusical performance, as did the owner andlandlord of the Castle, Prof. Mag. JohannHallwirth. He was well qualified to judge, since he is a Member of the Council of theUniversity for Music and Performing Arts.

At the request of the host, the Marseillaisewas also played. This was another successfulappearance on behalf of the Lazarus Union.

Presentation of Stand Banner to the Guard Music by Erich KadlecAs part of a formal ceremony at the MariaTheresa barracks, the LAZARUS UNIONwith the CSLI Music Corps presented theGuards Band with 24 new hand-embroideredstand banners. Certificates of Friendship be-tween the CSLI Music Corps and the GuardsBand were also signed by the Guards’ Direc-tor of Music, Colonel dhmtD Bernhard HeherM.A., and the CSLI Director of Music, Brig-adier General CSLI Friedrich Lentner. Itis the visible sign and certifies the friendship, appreciation and camaraderie between theLAZARUS UNION and the Guard.

The ceremony was hosted by our Vice Presi-dent, Colonel Oberst retr. ReinhardWassertheurer and of course our corps ban-ner, accompanied by an honour guard of of-ficers, was there.

Also attending were our partner associationsThe Radetzky Order and The AustriaHumanitas Corp. The Vienna Brass BandAssociation was represented by its NationalDirector of Music Herbert Klinger. Also pre-sent were The Orders of Saint LazarusofJerusalemand The Order of Saint Michael.

The ceremony began with military punctuali-ty: At 1450 the Guards Band marched onfollowed at 1455 by the CSLI Music Corps.By 1500 the Deputy Commander of theGuard, Major Thomas Güttersberger hadreported to the Military Commander of Vi-

enna, Brigadier Kurt Wagner M.A., that theceremony was ready to begin.

The ‘Prinz Eugen Marsch’ (played by theCSLI Music Corps) and ‘92erRegimentsmarsch’ ((played by the GuardsBand) framed the address by our President,Senator hc Wolfgang Steinhardt.

This ceremony clearly demonstrated the con-nection between the Austrian Armed Forcesand the LAZARUS UNION. Since its estab-lishment the CSLI has maintained theLAZARUS UNION’s friendly relations withthe Army, particularly the Guard. We gladlytake part in various ceremonies and events –convinced of our mutual respect, friendshipand camaraderie. Likewise, we can alwayscount on the support of our comrades of theGuards as Flight Assistants at our DisabledFlight Days.

President Steinhardt explained the back-ground to the presentation: a remark to Colo-nel Heher “… your stand banners are show-ing their age …” Answer: “… I know, butwith the current budget situation, we’ll neverget new banners …” This was the momentthat triggered events. The Lazarus UNIONhas “… to please others …” written in itsmission statement, so why not the Guard?

We certainly seemed to have succeeded inpleasing the Guard. Colonel Heher thankedthe Directors of Music and, because of the

Page 8: Edition 02/2013 - LAZARUS UNION€¦ · Edition 2/2013 Saint Lazarus – Magazine page | 3 Historic Boat cruise by Hans-Rudolph Gries On Sunday the 30th June 2013 the historic side-wheeler,

high temperatures, briefly expressed hispleasure at accepting this gift and offered theGuards’ support and assistance in the trainingof our musicians.

The Military Commander of Vienna, Briga-dier Kurt Wagner, was also appreciative ofthe gift. He outlined the work of the GuardsBand – its successful appearances at homeand abroad, and its work as the music schoolof the Austrian Army. The new stand bannersare for him a visual symbol of “combat effi-ciency”.

The Military Commander also had a big sur-prise in store.

On behalf of the President he presentedColonel Heher, as Chief of Army Music, with the Gold Cross of Honour of the Repub-lic of Austria.

The CSLI added its hearty congratulations.

The ‘Coral Grandioso’ played by the GuardsBand introduced the blessing and handingover of the stand banners. Father Dr. Alexan-der Lapin D.D., the Orthodox Military Chap-lain, and Deacon GR, Deacon Colonel Wil-liam Hold, blessed the donation with a briefprayer. Father Lapin was very generous withthe distribution of holy water – providing ablessed cooling for some in the heat.

The music ‘Schwert Österreich’ accompa-nied the signing of the Certificates of Friend-ship. The signatories were, as already men-

tioned, the Guards’ Director of Music, Colo-nel dhmtD Bernhard Heher M.A., and theCSLI Director of Music, Brigadier GeneralCSLI Friedrich Lentner.

The Guards Band and the CSLI Music Corpsthen played together, first ‘Ehre und Pflicht’,the traditional march of the Guards under thebaton of their Director of Music, then ourCorps march ‘Pappenheimer Marsch’ con-ducted by Director of Music Lentner.

It was a great day for the LAZARUS UNIONand the CSLI Music Corps. Within a fewmonths it had been possible to build a goodstandard of performance and become a mem-ber of the Vienna Brass Band Association.

The warm welcome from the Guards Bandand the Military Command of Vienna arepositive incentives for our work. We lookforward to a fruitful cooperation and friend-ship.

Due to the great heat further orders werewaived, and this colourful and dignified cer-emony finished with the associations parad-ing past the assembled guests.

At the invitation of the CSLI, musicians andguests then attended a small reception in theOfficers’ Mess. Many drinks and friendlydiscussions in a relaxed atmosphere roundedoff the day.

First Aid Seminar 2013 by Hans-Rudolph GriesSome time has gone by since I last completeda first aid course, so I clearly needed to dothis.

Promptly at 10 o’clock all participants met, some having a small coffee, some swearingby cocoa, then on the classroom.

After some introductory words from SenatorWolfgang Steinhardt, our Doctor took over. Iwas amazed to hear how much everything inmedicine has changed.

We learned about injury, disease, poisoning, what constitutes an emergency, diagnosis andemergency response. What immediate life-saving measure should I take? Personally, Iknew the general information signs for dan-gerous substances mean danger; I’ve seenthem a hundred times, but what else?

With many practical examples, and his ownexperience, Dr. Halat told us how to behaveand help in rescue operations. In a car, turnoff the engine and remove the key beforemoving the person because of the airbag, then remove the belt and turn the waistbandover. As an old biker it was for me quite newthat the safety helmet must always be re-moved. To support the theory, learning on aliving subject immediately followed. Eachattendee took his or her partner and tried toget them into the recovery position, here Iwould like to mention what a difficult patientour ‘injured‘ senator was – his first aider hadsome trouble with his rescue!

Next the artificial body, ‘Anna’, was used asan emergency motionless patient to test theprocedures for checking consciousness: sight, hearing, touch, cries for help; then respirato-ry and circulatory checks before carrying outresuscitation at 30:2. Next the defibrillatorwas explained and used. The whole processis not easy, in time of emergency I hope I’lldo everything right. Tired, but richer in expe-rience, we took a break for lunch.

Afterwards we were shown the measures totake for heavy bleeding: finger pressure thenadding a dressing. Again we practised on aliving subject, the artistic application of‘blood’ causing some mirth. Taking care ofthe arms was no problem, but on the legs, thetriangular bandage was too short…

Following a recap, everything we had cov-ered was checked in a test to see whetherwhat we had learned had stuck (again, not inthe documentation). Anyway, all participantsmanaged to pass the exam, a relief for every-one, and certificates were distributed andaccepted with pride. Finally we went to din-ner in a welcoming Stockerau Inn.

Summary: well presented and explained byDr. Gabriel Halat, I believe each of the par-ticipants took much new learning home, andwe’ll proudly wear our silver CSLI ‘wings’,although maybe a red cross on them might bea good idea.

9.Flight Ground Training 2013 by Ing. Mag. Manuel GablerOn Saturday 24.08.2013 the CSLI FlightAssistants training course was held on theStockerau airfield in cloudy weather with alight drizzle. It was my first meeting withmembers of the Lazarus Union and I wastherefore curious about what awaited me onthe day.

When I arrived, my first impression was ofthe typical image of a group of people whomeet for a training day. A motley conglom-eration of people had gathered in the mostimportant room – the canteen. During myfirst coffee (although you should not actuallyuse the term ‘coffee’ for the brown liquid inthese machines) it was quickly apparent thatsome of the attendees had known each otherfor some time and others were first timers atthe Lazarus Union. Although not personallyknown to me until then, I could see the headof the Flight Assistants training course(Wolfgang Steinhardt) due to the insignia onhis jacket even before he greeted me.

his jacket even before he greeted me.

When all 14 participants were present, it wasoff to the training room for the first timewhere Wolfgang welcomed us officially andopened the course. He described what suc-cessful completion of the course wouldmean, which we then all personally imag-ined. It was very interesting to see how thecourse was composed of different occupa-tional groups. Virtually everything was rep-resented, from an office administrator and atechnical draftsman to a theologian in train-ing as well as a retired sea captain.

After drawing lots to divide into teams and aminute of silence for the recently deceasedVice President of the Union Lazarus Colonel(Retd.) Reinhard Wassertheurer, Wolfgangbegan with the presentation of the first top-ics:

Responsibilities of a Flight Assistant

Conduct At Airports

Special Features of CSLI Flight Days

Mainly through numerous personal anecdoteshe made the first theoretical part of the train-ing very interesting and informative. Thenwe went straight to the practical applicationof what we had heard. In our previously allo-cated teams we began a first passenger brief-ing dry run. Here, the team leader briefed theothers. The team that was being briefed hadbeen told to make it hard for the briefer andthis led to bizarre and sometimes quite funnysituations. After these first dry runs we final-

Page 11: Edition 02/2013 - LAZARUS UNION€¦ · Edition 2/2013 Saint Lazarus – Magazine page | 3 Historic Boat cruise by Hans-Rudolph Gries On Sunday the 30th June 2013 the historic side-wheeler,

ly went out onto the airfield to practise theentry and exit of passengers on a helicopter.

The light drizzle meant that from now on wecould no longer be said to be doing ‘dryruns’! As mentioned at the briefing, one teamsimulated the passengers while another teamwas re-briefed and took over handling theentry and exit. The helicopter in which theprocedure was practised was an Agusta Bell206-B Jet Ranger, which will also be used atthe Disabled Flight Day. It was primarilyabout everyone on the team being able tointernalise their assigned work to ensure acomfortable, and above all safe, entry andexit of passengers.

The whole thing was practised once withrunning rotors and once without. As a smallcompensation for their efforts, each team wasalso able to enjoy a short scenic helicopterflight.

After lunch we went back into the classroomwhere Wolfgang inaugurated us in the fun-damentals of aviation law and stressed againthe important points about conduct at air-ports. Although everyone was well satisfiedfrom lunch, we kept our eyes open even inaviation law. Kudos to Wolfgang who made

this theory exciting and so prevented the pos-sibility of any interruptions by the sound ofsnoring.

As a final practical part we practised entryand exit on an aeroplane. Here a Cessna C-172 was used in the training. As with thehelicopter, we worked in our teams, eachaccompanying the other team to the aero-plane. Due to the narrowness of the aircraft, the loading and unloading of handicappedpeople is a particular challenge. Above all,the trailing edge of the wing should beavoided because passengers boarding andalighting can easily injure their heads on it.But in the end there’s nothing that cannot becontrolled with some well-intentioned push-ing and pulling.

Finally, we again returned to the classroomto complete the Flight Assistant written ex-am. Thanks to Wolfgang’s excellent prepara-tion, all participants passed.

I would like to sincerely thank Wolfgang forholding the course, the people of Aerial Helicop-ter for the flying and providing the trainingequipment, and all my fellow participants for thisinformative and enjoyable day. Looking forwardmeeting again on Disability Flight Day!

7.Handicapped Air Day 2013 by Erich KadlecFor the 7th time the LAZARUS UNIONCSLI invited round to its air day for humanswith special needs, held on Stockerau air-field.

The profoundly organised event took place inbest weather on Saturday, Sept. 7th, 2013.

About 250 participants of all ages from kid tosenior citizen took the chance to experiencethis event, among them many long-timeguests from the Austrian aiding associationfor the blind and deaf, the homeless place“Vinzi Rast“, Special Homes Stockerau, theOdilien residential community, and may oth-er organisations. They had a chance to fly inhelicopters and airplanes and participate alsoin our supporting program. Many showedgreat anticipation already. They were alsosupported by more than 100 voluntary assis-tants.

My day started at 5:30 with the alarm goingoff. After several failed attempts I succeededin getting up, it was still dark. I would love togo to sleep again.

I am happy to be at the meeting point 30minutes early – an once-in-a-hundred-yearsevent. Only our official photographer HannesHochmuth was already there.

The president gave both of us a ride toStockerau. There his first job was to reportthe event with the local police. At the airfieldmany assisting hands were already presentand after a short numbers call the setting upcommenced. Preparations had already beendone the day before and a small team had

already set up fridges and tables at the hang-ar.

Job priority list: 1. Get the planes out, 2.Clean the hangar, 3. Set up benches, 4. Pre-pare barriers. The tasks are executed swiftlyand so our president could have his favouritedrink (hot chocolate) at the airfield cafeteriaat 9:45 already.

I care only little about these activities as myjob is setting up the information desk. Thistask needs to be finished by 9:00 – the timethe first guests usually turn up. The infor-mation desk is the first contact point for ourguests. Here they get their boarding passesand vouchers for food and drinks. They haveto sign the transportation contract and can getany other information needed.

At the start there is always an ample amountof confusion, also because our informationdesk was understaffed this year. Stand-byflights have to be assigned or are rebooked, lists have to be filled out, questions need tobe answered. The most asked question was“Is there another helicopter flight available?“

The biggest challenge this time was the dearwish of a person in a wheel-chair to get ahelicopter flight. While this sounds like aneasy wish for the LAZARUS UNION theproblem was that the guy weighted 190kg!So the challenge was a little bit tougher butour flight assistants managed without prob-lems. The flight took place and the joy in theface of the passenger was a big reward.

Page 13: Edition 02/2013 - LAZARUS UNION€¦ · Edition 2/2013 Saint Lazarus – Magazine page | 3 Historic Boat cruise by Hans-Rudolph Gries On Sunday the 30th June 2013 the historic side-wheeler,

Edition 2/2013 Saint Lazarus – Magazine page | 13

At 10:00 there was big engine noise, the firstsquad took off. The flights are executed insquadron form, which means that all planesare loaded at the same time and take off inrapid succession, also arriving back homealmost the same time. This improved quickpassenger greatly.

The helicopter pilots had their own routes, flying to the danube power plant or to otherplaces.

This year we had at our disposal four planes(one PA-28 and three Cessna 172) from FSV2000 and two planes from the FliegergruppeWien (Cessna 172 and 182). Two helicopterscame from ARIAL HELICOPTER (B206and HU30).

At the same time RADIO LAZARUS wenton air. Our comrade and protocol officerLtCol. Rudolf Murth was a perfect radiohost, providing a variegated music programand also playing songs on public demand.Interviews describe our jobs and importantevent information for our guests are an-nounced.

11:00: Deep engine sounds. Our friends fromthe Harley Davidson Club arrived, led bycomrade Hans-Rudolf Gries. What an im-pressive picture. The audience gazes in won-der, as always, and lines up for pictures.

At the same time the lunch catering for ourguests begins, as always organised by theFSV 2000. The supporting program com-mences with old-timer car tours, which aremuch in demand, and also airfield tours.

The Spillern fire department displayed theirfire engine Mercedes 408 D from 1968.Langenlois fire department displayed theirextension mast platform TMB 32: MAN1830, 350 PS, Bronto Skylift , built in 2010.This is a special vehicle providing altituderescue and fire services up to an altitude of32m. This of course provided for some niceviews of the airfield and the actual events.

To our great pleasure also Mr. ManfredKlahofer came with his 1927 fire engineAUSTRO FIAT AFNL. This car was restingat a playground for 50 years before he re-stored it to its old state, taking 5 years of te-dious work.

The Ford Mustang Coupé, 1966 from theold-timer museum Koller was driven aroundby Honour Knight Ing. Peter Steinbach.

President Werner Gradisch of the Bugatticlub Austria surprised us with his BugattiT44, 1927. Motor 69×100/2991ccm, 80 HP,top speed 140km/h, auto body Frugier. Thisvehicle is one of a kind as by then cars weredelivered without body which was then man-ufactured on demand of the owner. To me amost impressive vehicle.

A “Willy’s Overland Jeep“ from 1943, fromAugust 1945 to September 1946 the standardvehicle of the “International Patrol“ was ondisplay, used by then in Vienna by the AlliedMilitary Police, manned by one US, one Brit-ish, one French and one Russian MP, called“The four in the Jeep“ by the locals.

I hardly notice any of those activities as I sitwith my information desk close to the en-trance, far away from where the show takesplace. There is little time for short explora-tion trips.

But despite all this hectic rush there is timefor some amusing occurrences: near the endof the event a man approached me, asking ifthere are still food vouchers. I think he is apassenger and tell him, “Did you have yourflight already?“ – “Yes.“ – “So there is avoucher in your envelope.“ I polish him off,not listening any more to his speech. A fewminutes later he comes back with a comrade– the alleged passenger turned out to be ofour pilots…

The finish was once again a successful con-cert from the Big Band of the LAZARUSUNION inside the hangar: A tribute to GlennMiller and his contemporaries, directed byCSLI BrigGen. Friedrich Lentner.

Extraordinary Investiture at Kreuzenstein Castle by SpectatorOn September 24th, 2013 , 22 Knights ofHonour, Commanders, Grand Commanders, and Grand Cross Knights of Honour from theLazarus Union as well as more officers, theHonour Guard, and private guests met atKreuzenstein Castle to celebrate in an ex-traordinary atmosphere the ceremonial inves-titure of Hans Christian Count Wilczek, thelord of Kreuzenstein Castle and of Col. Mag.Bernhard Heher, the Music Commander andbandmaster of the Austrian Army GuardRegiment Music Corps.

On explicit request by Hans Christian Earlof Wilczek the investiture bestowing uponhim the honour of a Collar Knight of Honourof the Lazarus Union, the highest award theLazarus Union is able to give, was celebratedin the chapel of the castle which is also theburial site of his ancestors. Before, this hon-our was only bestowed upon Minister a.D.Dr. Werner Fasslabend, one of the “found-ers“ of the Knighthood of Honour. His de-cree as a Lazarus Union Knight of Honourholds the serial number 1.

We are also proud that Colonel BernhardHeher MA has accepted the dignity as a Laz-arus Union Knight of Honour. There is aclose friendship and bond between our musiccorps and the Austrian Army Guard Regi-ment Music Corps, a companionship whichcannot be valued highly enough.

This ceremony was purposely not announcedon our homepage in advance and onlyKnights of Honour, selected officers, andprivate guests were invited as the locale pro-vided only very limited space. All assembled

in front of the new tavern and then marchedtogether into the terrific inner ward to thedoors of the chapel.

Words cannot describe the atmosphere thispart of the castle provided on this late after-noon shortly before twilight fell in. The facesof the participants were proof that no onecould exclude himself from the spiritual at-mosphere which was almost to be felt physi-cally.

After a solemn entry procession, the CSLIfanfare and a welcome by the Grand Masterof the Knighthood of Honour Senator h.c.Wolfgang Steinhardt there was the ceremoni-al renewal of the officer‘s promise of theLazarus Union, followed by the Grand Mas-ter‘s address and the blessing of the insigniaby the Reverend GR Mag. Wolfgang Berger.

All parts of this extraordinary investiturewere framed by music from the Lazarus Un-ion Music Corps, directed by Franz Lentner.A big compliment and a huge thank you toour music corps.

The climax was the investiture ceremony. One could hear a needle drop as the GrandMaster asked the two postulants: “I ask youtherefore, before the assembled congregation:“Do you of your own free will as a Knight ofHonour want to belong to our communityand accept our mission?“ and “Are youaware what it means to be a member of thiscommunity?” and they both answered “Iwant it with all my heart!” and “Yes, I am!”

After this public promise, the handing overof the sword, the coat and the insignia and ablessing the new Knights of Honour werewelcomed with big applause and the corpsfanfare was played to honour them.

After a prayer the remembrance for deadcomrades was held.

While “The Good Comrade“ was played theaudience payed homage to H.E. Vice Presi-dent Colonel retd. Reinhard Wassertheurer,Grand Marshal of the Knighthood of HonourLazarus Union, a dear loyal faithful comradeand friend, who recently passed away.

After Beethoven‘s “Ode to Joy“ the leavingprocession took place and the traditionalgroup photograph was taken in front of thechapel, accompanied by congratulations. Then there was a get-together in the castletavern with good food and drinks. With talksand friendly conversation this culminatingevent sadly came to a finish.

Thanks also to LtCol retd. Rudi Murth, ourprotocol officer who guided safely thoughthe celebration and also to HannesHochmuth, as always responsible for pic-tures, and to all who participated in makingthis a successful investiture.

2nd Investiture Vienna 2013 by SpectatorOn 12. October 2013, at 6pm the 2nd investi-ture of the Lazarus Union Knighthood ofHonour took place as the final social CSLIhighlight for this year. The selected locationfor the event was once again the hall of famein the Imperial Austrian MilitaryMuseum inVienna.

While the common understanding already atthe first investiture was that it will be next toimpossible to top that event, once again ourorganisation team did an excellent job, againcoming up with some new improvements. Sothe guests and friendly organisations as wellas the banners were seated before the march-ing in of the postulants and the chapter, thereby reducing the stress searching forone‘s seat and making the marching in muchmore relaxed. All agreed that this was anexcellent decision. The information leafletsmade it easy for all guests to follow the cer-emony and all its deeper intentions.

As with many previous investitures we hadthe pleasure to welcome representatives fromthe Radetzky Order, the Order of St. Mi-chael, the Austria Humanitas Corps, theRadetzky Hussars, Langenlois and Spillernvoluntary fire brigades, the Flame of Peace, the Military and Hospitaller Order of SaintLazarus of Jerusalem as well as many guests, friends and relatives of our postulants, andKnights of Honour and CSLI members. Thehall of fame was full up to the last row andsome extra chairs had to be brought in.

In the course of his welcome address, theGrand Master conveyed personal messagesfrom HIRH Archdukes of Austria, Princess

and Prince of Toscana, Herta Margarete andSandor Habsburg Lothringen, who were onsome business abroad, and also from our firstcollar knight and “Knighthood of HonourPioneer“, the former Minister Dr. WernerFasslabend, who unfortunately also was onbusiness in Jordan.

Then the protocol officers in charge LtCol.retd. Rudolf Murth and his assistant Mjr.CSLI Helene Kneidinger, took over and sev-eral times surprised their audience with mostinteresting background information on sever-al events and the background music played.

The crusader‘s fanfare led over to the presen-tation of the banners. Every Knight of Hon-our is entitled to his own coat of arms andalso to present this coat of arms on a bannerat official events.

The Grand Master after calling the namehanded the banner over to the knight beinghonoured with the banner.

The knight then turned towards the audienceand greeted by lowering the banner. Then theknight returned the banner to the bannerbearer.

Banners were presented to: Chev. HannesHochmuth, Dame Anita König, Chev. Dr.Oswin Hochstöger and Chev. Prof. HansKönig.

It is tradition in the course of a great investi-ture that the Lazarus Union officer‘s promiseis renewed by all officers present. After thetrumpet signal: “Attention“ designated offic-

ers CSLI Lt. Edit and Ernestine Lentner,CSLI Cmdr. Monika Gries and Captain retd.Hans-Rudolf Gries stepped forward and puttheir left hand on the flagpole of the Unionflag. The Deputy Federal Commander Wolf-gang Leitner stated the formal promise andall the Officers present replied. “I promise onmy honour …“ Personal honour is the mostprecious thing a Lazarus Union officer pos-sesses. If he breaks this promise he puts dis-grace upon himself.

This was followed by the “Dutch Prayer“from the “Great Austrian Tattoo.“

In his speech the Grand Master addressed theLazarus Union mission statement, giving ashort summary of the history of the organisa-tion and the problems and difficulties to bemastered so today‘s status could be reached. The Lazarus Union is a world-wide accredit-ed charitable organisation with lots of activi-ties on charity, humane, and peace-keepingfields, listed as NGO with the United Nationsand soon receiving UN status of a consulta-tive organisation, having more than 16.000members in over 70 countries worldwide onall continents. While the Lazarus Union isneither a spiritual nor a profane order it shallnot forget its roots. This was represented bythe members of “Milites Sancti Imperii“ intheir historic costumes, thus spanning thetradition from the past to the present. TheGrand Master also thanked the postulantswho would next in public avow themselvesto the mission statement and the fundamentalideas of the Lazarus Union.

The investiture of the new knights of honourprovided for the climax of the ceremony. Theprotocol officer called all candidates by theirname and the Grand Master asked the alreadyfamous questions:

“I ask you therefore, before the assembledcongregation: Do you of your own free willas … … .. (here the rank and position towhich the candidate is to be commissioned isused) want to belong to our community andaccept our mission?“ and “Are you aware

what it means to be a member of this com-munity?”

After answering with “I want it with all myheart!” and “Yes, I am!” the candidates re-ceive the insignia of their new dignity: thesword from Lazarus Union Secretary GeneralErich Kadlec, the mantle from Grand Knightand member of the board Col. Retd. Adolf H.Neidhart, and the insignia of the LAZARUSUNION Knighthood of Honour from theGrand Chancellor,Christoph Ptak.

After the symbolic accolade by Lazarus Un-ion president and Grandmaster of theKnighthood of Honour, Senator h.c. Wolf-gang Steinhardt, the new Knight of Honour iswelcomed into the society with the triple kissof brotherhood. After this the new Knightfaces the audience while the Grand Masterpresents the new knight with the words:

“Dear attendees, friends, comrades: here isour new Knight of Honour, we applaud him.”

After the applause the CSLI Fanfare and theColours honour the new knight. This cere-mony is then conducted for every singleknight and dame of honour as it is a veryspecial ceremony and shall be rememberedwith pleasure.

After the music play “Trumpet Voluntary“the knights of honour Brig. retd. Chev.Ewald Angetter and Chev. Prof.Hans Königwere promoted to Commander of theKnighthood of Honour. In his laudation theGrand Master mentioned the allegiance andthe merits of these knights and then alsopromoted Chev. Prof. Hans König to GrandPrefect of the Knighthood of Honour of theLazarus Union for theCanary Islands.

As the second Knight of Honour followingH.E. Chev. Col. retd. Helmut Neidhart,Grand Chancellor Chev.Christoph Ptak re-ceived the Grand Cross of the Knighthood ofHonour of the Lazarus Union to honour hislong and great merits. The Lazarus Unionheartily congratulates.

In the presence of Theresia Wassertheurer, widow of our estimated valued and honouredfriend and comrade, vice president and GrandMarshal of the Lazarus Union Knighthood ofHonour, Col. retd. Reinhard Wassertheurer, his co-opted successor Brig. retd. EwaldAngetter was ceremonially inaugurated andas a sign of his new office received the chainof the Grand Marshal of the Lazarus UnionKnighthood of Honour out of the hands ofthe Grand Master.

The corps prayer spoken by the Grand Mas-ter and the musical prayer from the “GreatAustrian Tattoo“ ended the investiture cere-mony.

The „Prinz Eugen March“ then led over tothe remembrance for dead comrades. Intro-ductory words were spoken by our protocolofficer LtCol. retd. Rudolf Murth.

This ceremony was held in remembrance ofour comrade Reinhard Wassertheurer, whopassed away at the age of 62. A trumpetplayed “The good comrade“ and a dame ofhonour carried a burning candle into the hallof fame as the lights were dimmed and a qui-et drum roll commenced. She was followedby a knight of honour carrying a picture ofReinhard which was put on a chair. Thischair had remained empty for the whole

evening. Than our youngest member, LukasValenta, brought Reinhard‘s personal bannerand placed it behind the chair.

There was hardly anyone present who did nothave to fight with tears when “The goodcomrade“ was played. After a minute incomplete silence Reinhard‘s favourite marchwas played as a personal wish of TheresiaWassertheurer, the “Zottelmarsch.“ Reinhardalways was looking forward, never givingtoo much thought to what laid behind him.

After final words by the Grand Master and athank you to all who played their part in ar-ranging and organising this ceremony, Bee-thoven‘s “Ode to Joy“ was the prelude to themarching out and the obligatory group pic-tures. Also a special thank you goes to ourmusic corps and the bandmaster FriedrichLentner for providing a worthy musicalframe to this investiture. After the picturesthere was a leisurely come-together with alot of small-talk, putting an enjoyable end tothe whole evening.

Thank you to all who assisted in arrangingthe agape and also to our caterer, DURAN,who delivered tasty sandwiches in time andfor a good price. There was plenty availableand no-one left hungry and thirsty. Therewere even a few leftovers!

Patrons day of the Order of St. Michael byHans-Rudolph GriesThe ‘Order of the Most Worthy Freemen andKnights of St. Michael’, MO, or the Order ofthe Knights of St. Michael for short, is one ofthe LazarusUnion’s longstanding friendlyorganizations. The mutual visits to their re-spective events are always among the high-lights of the year for both organizations. Itshows again and again how good it can bewhen groups with the same or similar goalscelebrate together in comradeship, mutualrespect and friendship over many years with-out ‘competitiveness’ and without ‘jealousy’.

We accepted this invitation straight away, buthad some minor complications. Our SatNavtook us to a white church on the left sideofMarket Street, but it was the wrong church.Excitedly the first guests there came to meetus but then had to re-direct us to the rightchurch, pointing some kilometres further onto the fortifiedchurchof St. Michael.

We were not the only ones, the Order’s Cler-ic, Mag. Thomas Lackner who was to cele-brate the Festive Mass, was virtually in theneighbourhood though on the other bank oftheDanube, but only finally reached us anhour late. We took advantage of the time totake the obligatory group photos. No matterhow the event is run, in the words of ourSenator, Wolfgang Steinhardt, “one musthave brilliant photos”.

The history of this ancient but modest forti-fied church was carefully explained to us(care of the lady sacristan) and its uniquenesspointed out. This was formerly the headquar-

ters of an extensive parish and mother churchof the Wachau, first mentioned in the year987. The Gothic part of the church was builtbetween 1500 and1523, but it was complete-ly destroyed by two fires in 1532 and 1630then restored in 1634. A real rarity is the or-gan of the church dating from 1650. Stillplayable, it is one of the oldest inAustria. Onthe church roof are seven animal figures rep-resenting deer and horses. In legend they areknown as ‘the seven rabbits of St. Michael’.

Finally the Order’s Cleric arrived and theFestive Mass began. The musical accompa-niment was by the Cantemus Choir under thedirection of Mr. Erich Klug. At the end of theMass, and after the blessing of the Insignia,Senator hc Wolfgang Steinhardt presentedGrand Master Michael Kress of The Order ofthe Knights of St. Michael with a gilded andornate chain of office as a personal gift.

Now at last former Mayor Prof. Fritz BauerMies could begin the wine presentation. Allenjoyed the delicious wine, made fromGrüner Veltliner grapes, and freshly bakedbread. Briefly strengthened we proceeded totheAggsteinCastleruins. The dirt road fromthe parking lot up to the castle brought em-barrassment to some ladies and gentlemenwhose shoes couldn’t take the rough going,no problem for the ladies with a second pairin their car, but for the men Tixo duct tapehad to serve…

The Order of the Knights of St. Michael thenattended their Convention and General As-sembly, in which our President participated

as an honorary member. Most guests chose atour ofAggsteinCastle.

A young lady castle guide explained thesite’s history with anecdotes about the prop-erty. It was originally built in the 12th Centu-ry by Manegold the III. In 1181 it came intothe possession of the Kuenringer family. Thelast Kuenringer, Leutold II, held the castlefrom 1348 to 1355 but after that it fell intodisrepair. In 1429 Duke Albrecht V assignedthe castle to Jörg Scheck von Wald commis-sioning him to rebuild the ruined castle tosecure the passage of ships on theDanubebut, over time, he became a robber baron lootingthe ships on the river. in 1529 the castle wasburned down by the Ottomans (during thefirst Turkish siege ofVienna). Again it wasrebuilt and inhabited and was acquired in1606 by Baroness Anna Polheim von Parzwho built a small hospital in the grounds.

Only in 2003 did a project to make the castleruins more attractive fix the defective mason-ry and redesign the lobby and the Knight’sHall. Now it is a beautiful castle and a popu-lar tourist destination. Personally, I couldonly shudder when I think of the practice ofthose times when Knights and other peopleonly washed 1 or 2 times a year. In my mindI saw myself coming back from hunting orfighting, covered with a thick layer of dirt, tobe received by my lady with no time to cleanand no herbs or rose petals to help improvethings!

Tired and rather cold, we went to the GalaEvening in the Great Hall. This began withthe welcoming of the invited guests. TheRadetzky Order, the Weinritter (an Associa-tion promoting wine culture and wine appre-ciation), the German Sister OrderofSt.Michael, the Ostarrichi Order, the LionsClub and the Lazarus Union were all repre-sented.

Six new knights were enrolled. Mentors ofthe Order inGermany, the married coupleDaume, were honoured as she became anhonoured Lady and her husband an Officer inthe Order. Our President, Senator H.C.Wolfgang Steinhardt, was awarded the SilverStar of the Order Cross ‘with diamonds’ bythe Grand Master. As the Grand Prior pre-sented it, our President’s real joy was clear tosee.

Finally the announcement was made: “Thebuffet is open.”

After all, we’d been looking forward to thecastle’s special cuisine – pork fat with crack-ling, fried spare ribs, sausages, baked chick-en, knuckles of pork, dumplings and cabbagewere on offer and enjoyed. “Very tasty”, I’llsay! However, as it was a fine and respecta-ble occasion, the bones remained on theplates not simply thrown over the shoulderinLockenhausCastlestyle, and we got knivesand forks too! A sweet Knight’s dessert‘served with thick plum sauce’ rounded offthis meal.

Everyone was happy chatting, joking andsinging and the Choir was in its element.Choral conductor Erich, immediately recog-nizing our talent, invited us to sing along andwe didn’t really need any encouragement.Together we warbled through many a song.Respect! It seemed that, when things were attheir most enjoyable, it was time to leave. After all we still had a long way to go to gethome.

On behalf of the Lazarus Union, thank youvery much Knights of St. Michael for organ-ising this wonderful event.

Flood Assistance 2013 by Bernd HöhleIn time of trouble we should be aware of whypeople like us wear a uniform, and the signif-icance of the ideas behind it!

No one could foresee it, no one expected it,and yet it has happened again: flooding inGermany. A great tragedy which has hit somany people so hard, losing their homes andtheir belongings and now deprived of theirbasic livelihood.

Despite the suffering, one thing again provedto be true. When it matters, Germany comestogether! The aid that many people gave is animportant sign, showing our human strengthand sustainability. Thousands of people madethemselves available without asking, andtheir help made those affected feel that theywere not alone in times of need.

This was a great and powerful gesture, whichalso exemplifies the ideals of our organiza-tion. It is for these reasons that we havejoined together and wear a uniform. Help canbe a simple thing, even with small expendi-ture and few means! Ultimately this is ourpurpose and goal.

In response to the flood situation this year theCSLI group formation SOF, under the direc-tion of Major CSLI Bernd Höhle (CSLICommander of Lower Saxony), was active inproviding aid. At locations in Grimma andWittenberg sandbags were filled, buildingssecured and cleanup operations performed.

We for all and nobody allone! by Bernd HöhleUnder this slogan, this year's disaster helpertraining by the CSLI group formation ‘TheSword of Freedom’ was successfully carriedout. We are a humanitarian organizationwhose members act out of their personal in-terest to help the needy to the best of theirability with the staff and resources available.

The help given may be simple. The SOFgroup commander Bernd Höhle (CSLI Majorand Commander of Lower Saxony) referredto the recent events in Germany as an exam-ple. The floods brought great tragedy to resi-dents with much loss of housing, belongingsand livelihoods.

However, the aid that many people gave is animportant sign, showing our human strengthand sustainability. Thousands of people madethemselves available without asking, andtheir help made those affected feel that theywere not alone in times of need. "This was agreat and powerful gesture, which also ex-emplifies the ideals of our organization andour ultimate purpose and goal,” said Assis-tant Group Commander Danny Koch, whoaccompanied the participants through thecourse.

To ensure this continues, the SOF Directoratealready has small and large-scale plans forfuture crisis and intervention management.

The Sword of Freedom disaster aid coursewas held in Heidesee in Berlin, with honor-ary members travelling from Flensburg, Ber-lin, Hanover, Herne and Cuxhaven.

The content of the course stressed the im-portant basis of self-help. Nothing is moreimportant than good provision for your ownpeople, so that in an emergency you can alsohelp those who are in need. "We are particu-larly proud of the positive encouragementand support we have had from the GermanFederal Office for Civil Protection and Dis-aster Relief," said Bernd Höhle. For the se-cond section of the course we were gratefulfor the support from the Workers' SamaritanFederation.

Disaster Protection and First Aid InstructorSascha Swade gave all participants the latestfindings and priorities for "first aid", not onlytheoretically but also through practical im-plementation. There are now many new im-pressions and goals which members of theorganization want to start to implement in thefuture. "A solid foundation of knowledge andskills is a prerequisite for a successful opera-tion," said Babak Philip Saviz, all the wayfrom Flensburg and already looking forwardto the next course, which will feature the Fireand Mountain Rescue sections.

A Musical Afternoon by Hans-Georg PeschIn a special section of the "Gute Stube" eVSponsorship, a musical afternoon for seniorcitizens was held in the summer. Because Ihave long been known at the nursing homeplaying music on the expensive Wersi organ,as a musician I couldn’t be absent from thisevent.

Since our partnership - CSLI/Support group– pledges the help of our CSLI teams for allevents, the support group also worked withthe home’s occupational therapy employees. So on this colourful musical afternoon Icould play popular songs, but also my owncompositions. The repertoire ranged fromwell-known ‘sing along’ songs for the sen-iors to modern dance music, though at homeI tend more to ambient and meditation music.

But now back to the actual event. Drinks andsnacks had been provided by the Sponsorsand BT and the inhabitants had found theirplaces and waited, curious as to what was tocome.

First, the residents and I were welcomed tothe afternoon by Mrs Stern, Deputy BT Line

Manager and Mr Werner Soltysiak from theSponsors.

As an introduction we sang old Hamburgersongs, including Heidi Kable’s song: "Op derEck steiht en Jung mit nem Tüddelband"which the residents joined in with enthusias-tically. This was followed by some anecdotesand stories.

Then I could get started on the 2 manual or-gan and play. Many residents got up to‘shake a leg’ at the sound of the dance music. You wouldn’t believe the enthusiasm thatresidents can display when music is played,be it from the keyboard or organ, or evenfrom a CD player.

All too soon the afternoon came to an end, with some residents requesting music ondays when no events are scheduled.

My conclusion from the afternoon: "If ap-plause were the bread of the artist, then Iwould not starve."

This is a typical example of how the LazarusUnion undertakes activities without greatcost, as it also did in 2012. Thank you!

Remembrance Day 2013 by Hans-Georg PeschMany citizens participated in the memorialservice for Remembrance Day, held at thecemetery in New Wulmstorf. Included weregroups from communal politics, represented byMayor W E Rosenzweig and council members, officers of the Bundeswehr, members of theRed Cross and the Volunteer Fire Department, local shooting club members and members ofthe Traditional Associations of Armoured Ar-tillery Battalion 75 and Anti-Aircraft Regiment3.

In my capacity as a member of CSLI Germany, and also as a member of the Traditional Asso-ciation community, I represented the LazarusUnion by attending this memorial service inuniform.

At 11.30 the choir began with some singing, then Mayor Rosenzweig gave a memorialspeech on the poppy buttons that are worn inthe UK on their Remembrance Day, a counter-part to ours.

After the speech an Evangelical Church brassensemble played hymns before the laying ofwreaths at the individual cenotaphs. Holdingthe tributes were the Guard of Honour, soldiersof the Armoured Artillery Training Battalion325.

First the Mayor and a Council Member laid awreath at the memorial for fallen soldiers, fol-lowed by the local clubs with their delegations.

This was followed by wreaths laid at the me-morial plaques by the officers and serving sol-diers and then by the board members of theTraditional Associations of Armoured ArtilleryBattalion 75 and Anti-aircraft Regiment 3.

After about an hour the memorial service wasover and the Guard of Honour was relievedwith the thanks of all present for their duty.

Afterwards, Mayor Rosenzweig invited thesoldiers and members of the Traditional Asso-ciations to a small reception in the "councilcellar". So one could exchange a little for goodsoup and bread and dripping sandwiches.

Our uniform is not yet well known in Germanyso, during the reception, I had the opportunityto answer some officers’ questions by explain-ing a little about the work of the CSLI and theLazarus Union. We should consider in the Laz-arus Union, and CSLI Germany, whether itwould not make sense to enter into a partner-ship with the Traditional Associations or activemembers of the Armed Forces to work togetheron social projects and events. Preliminary dis-cussions on this with the Executive Board ofthe Traditional Association of Armoured Artil-lery Battalion 75 and some officers are alreadyrunning.

Christmas in a Shoebox by Hans-Georg PeschFor some years there has been a nationwidecampaign called "Christmas in a Shoebox" tohelp socially disadvantaged people, especial-ly children. The campaign is headquarteredin Melbourne, Australia. As in previousyears, the members of the "Brotherhood ofKnights Edeler Namen" and new this year, the "Confraternity of Knights of St. Peter &St. Paul" participated in this action.

In my role as Governor of the "Brotherhoodof Knights Edeler Namen " and KnightCommander and Prior of the "Confraternityof Knights of St. Peter & St. Paul", I had thehonourable task of carrying out this action inLower Saxony by collecting donations incash and kind.

The campaign started at the beginning ofOctober when my team and I began collect-ing. We scoured stores and I also led collec-tions among the employees of the nursinghome in which I work.

At first progress was a little slow with indi-vidual firms and other members not donatingfrom the outset or even later. Since it was thefirst such action for me I hadn’t gained muchexperience in this field and at first I was alittle discouraged and annoyed by the rejec-tions, always having believed in the good inpeople.

So I began to pin up our Grand Master’s firstletter about our action in residential areas and

at my place of work - of course, in consulta-tion with and permission from my boss, whotook part in our campaign with a large sum ofmoney.

A few days later bags and bags of toys andschool supplies appeared. Some colleaguesbrought chocolate and lollipops or largeplush animals made in their spare time. Inearly November the first big cardboard boxwas ready and sent to Berlin for the collec-tion.

My colleagues at work also raised 210 Euroswith which I could buy, in consultation withour Grand Chancellor of the Knights Broth-erhood, small toys like cars, puzzles like Ru-bik's Cubes, stuffed toys and various otheruseful things. We also thought of the schoolchildren so I again organized a day of shop-ping with my team to buy needed school andpainting materials.

The second big box, a little heavier than thefirst, was filled in early November just intime for the end of the action. This one wasalso sent to Berlin, so that all parcels wereshipped in time for the gifts to be given to thechildren and socially disadvantaged people atChristmas.

Next year I will again take part with my teamin this great action and maybe do a lot betterbecause the more tasks you undertake, themore you know.

Christmas Donations to the Burgkunstadt Food BankBurgkunstadt: Just before Christmas, Sven andKatja Dietel and Hermann Dietrich as representa-tives of the Corps Saint Lazarus International andBernd Wenzel, the Deputy Chairman of theLettenreuth Soldiers Traditional Fellowship(STK), gave 109 bags of sweets and 139 bags ofcured meats to the Burgkunstadter Food Bank.

Sven Dietel, CSLI Commander, Germany, thanked Food Bank Chairman Silke Mohler andall the volunteer helpers for their laudable com-mitment to serving this good cause. This is thefourth time the Corps has supported the FoodBank with a Christmas donation. "When I askedfor the number of donation bags needed this year,I was very upset," Dietel said. The fact that thenumber of children in need had increased duringthe year from 83 to 109 seemed almost incredi-ble. More than 2,000 Euros were therefore raisedfor the donation bags, and Sven especiallythanked the Lettenreuth STK, which alone con-tributed over 750 Euros. No less thanks also go tothe butcher Senger from Hochstadt and all themembers and patrons of CSLI Germany.

The Corps Saint Lazarus International is a privateorganization that acts according to the ideals ofSt. Lazarus. Joined in the spirit of tolerance, hu-mility, compassion and charity it has taken up thecause of bringing other people joy, providingdisaster relief, and helping the homeless andthose with disabilities. All members are volun-teers. Particularly in this day and age more andmore people need help and support, not only inareas of crisis but also in local neighbourhoods. Here the Lazarus Union aims to help.

Silke Mohler thanked the donors on behalf of allthe Food Bank’s customers for the Christmasgifts that are so very welcome just before theholidays. "I know how much work, and howmuch personal effort, lies behind such a compre-hensive fundraising campaign," she explained. She also thanked in this context the Burgkunstadtauthorities for the free use of the issuing office inthe Town Hall. "This assistance fromBurgkunstadt helps all those in need in the townand also benefits those outside the town too,"Mohler said to Mayor Heinz Petterich, who hadalso come for the presentation of donations. TheMayor, in turn, paid tribute to the work of thevolunteers. "With so much commitment theBurgkunstadt Town Council cannot stand idly by,so it was natural for us to make the premisesavailable. If the Food Bank had not had the vol-unteer helpers, they wouldn’t have been able tomake the rounds of all the families in need." Allof the citizens paid tribute to the helpers.

It shouldn’t go unmentioned that, during the do-nation ceremony, still further donations werebeing quietly received. A Food Bank helperbrought the Christmas donation fromAltenkunstadt Middle School, which was packedin two large boxes. The donor from Burgkunstadtitself brought another gift. Several boxes andlovingly packed gift bags were handed over, anda family from Theisau donated two Christmastrees, which were very welcome.

Freeman of the City of London by Mike BoxallAt 11.30 on the 17th of June 2013, a CityofLondon Beadlein top hat and frockcoatescorted CSLI Major Mike Boxall and hisguests into the Chamberlain’s Court atGuildhall for the ancient ceremony grantingthe Freedom of the City of London.

First recorded in 1237, ‘the Freedom’ tradi-tionally recognised that a person was free offeudal service and recorded their right totrade in the square mile of the CityofLondon. Today these trade rights no longerapply, but the Freedom of the City remains aunique part ofLondon’s history to whichmany people who have lived or worked inthe City have been proud to be admitted.

Kindly nominated by Freemen of the Cityand senior CSLI GB&I officers Ian Toughand Simon McIlwaine, proud Londoner Mike

had come to swear the ‘Declaration of aFreeman’ before the silk-gowned Clerk ofthe Chamberlain’s Court. After signing theFreeman’s Declaration Book, he was pre-sented with a hand-inscribed parchmentCopy of the Freedom. The Clerk then ex-tended the right hand of fellowship to wel-come this newest ‘Citizen of London’.

Like the CSLI, the Freedom does not dis-criminate on grounds of religion, social sta-tus, ethnicity, sex or age and all fees go tocharitable causes. Mike was therefore doublyproud, as a Londoner and as a CSLI member,to receive this formal recognition of his per-sonal connection with the City of Londonand its traditions.
