CALL TO WORSHIP AND OPENING PRAYER Dr. Casey G. Baggott *PROCESSIONAL HYMN AND ENTRANCE OF THE CHRIST LIGHT “Morning Has Broken” BUNESSAN *LENTEN LITANY Bruce Metcalfe

One: People of God, come out of every dark and cheerless place! All: We come today to stand in the light of God’s love and receive God’s healing and hope. One: Let us listen for the voice that awakens us and calls us to new life. All: May we hear the call of Christ and answer, as the disciples, James and Thaddeus, did. One: People of God, unbind everything that constricts your heart and soul, so that you may follow Christ.

Let us pray …

Page 3: Raising Lazarus

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Enable us, Holy One, to gain a better perspective on our lives. Forgive our blinding self-focus and self-concern. Help us acknowledge that it is by your design that we are made, by your love that we are sustained, and by your strength that we are saved from every ill. Indeed, even death is defeated by your gracious hand. Call to us, roll away the stones that block our paths, and bid us come to you again. Unbind us, like Lazarus, and let us walk in freedom. Call to us, and help us to follow Christ’s way. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Rev. Holly H. Adams

*LIGHTING OF TEN DISCIPLES’ CANDLES

Each week during Lent we light two more candles in remembrance of the disciples who enthusiastically followed Jesus. On Maundy Thursday the same twelve disciples’ candles will be extinguished to represent their desertion and betrayal.

This week we remember the disciples James and Thaddeus.

*LENTEN PETITION “Jesus, Remember Me”

*PASSING OF THE PEACE Rev. David W. Johnson

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 130 TRUAX

Cantor and Congregation

One: 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. 2 LORD, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! 3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, LORD, who could stand?

Cantor and Congregation

One: 4 But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the LORD more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

Cantor and Congregation

One: 7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. 8 It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Cantor and Congregation

RESPONSE

One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen.

CALL TO THE GOSPEL Rev. David W. Johnson

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

John 11:1-27 (condensed)

1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 14 Then Jesus told [the disciples] plainly, "Lazarus is dead. 15 For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him." 23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" 27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world."

*HYMN OF DEVOTION “Jesus Calls Us, o’er the Tumult” GALILEE THE GOSPEL STORY, CONTINUED Dr. Robert T. Baggott

John 11:32-44 (condensed)

32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35 Jesus began to weep.

38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." 40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

RESPONSE One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

ANTHEM “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” Chancel Choir

arr. Gilbert Martin

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died. My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, that I should boast,

Save the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small;

Love, so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all! Amen!

MISSION MINISTRY MISSIONS WATCH: Inanda Seminary in South Africa: Inanda Seminary (grades 8-12) was established by Congregationalist missionaries, as a school for black females in Durban, South Africa. For 149 years, they have consistently molded girls into strong Christian leaders that uphold the school motto “Shine Where You Are” (Philippians 2:15). The school also seeks to extend its reach into the local community by supporting community projects and offering extra math and science lessons for children in local under resourced government schools. There is an education crisis in the country and Inanda Seminary wants to be a part of the solution. Community Church wants to be part of the solution as well by contributing our mission dollars to their work.

April Schedule

April 10 Saving Jesus: Atonement

For many Christians, the “good news” is no more than “Jesus died on the cross for my sins.” And yet, many New Testament scholars argue that some early streams of Christianity cared more about Jesus’ life and example than his suffering and death, while the Apostle Paul preached “Christ crucified!” with little mention of Jesus’ earthly life. This session, led by Rev. David Johnson explores the meaning and purpose of Jesus’ death. Dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. and will be lasagna, a salad and garlic bread. Reservations are required by Monday at 5:00 p.m. and may be made by calling the Church Office at 772-562-3633.
