GIANT WIND TURBINE PLANNED ‘WILL BE BLOT’ ON THE GOBBINS LANDSCAPEViews from the restored Gobbins cliff path could be blighted if a controversial wind turbine gets the go-ahead, it has been claimed.

Planners are recommending approval of the

46.5 metre turbine proposed by Whitehead Golf Club at McCrae’s Brae, but have received over 160 objections to date and rising. Wind farm developer Peter

Craig said “It will also have

an impact on views from the

soon-to-be-opened Gobbins

cliff path when looking

back along the relatively

untouched east coast

of Islandmagee toward

Blackhead,” he said.

“The visual impact of this development would be completely unacceptable - it would be a blot on the landscape.” One local Whitehead

person who wished to

remain anonymous called

Chatterbox and stated “I’m

really concerned because

there has been an awful lot

of money pumped into the

Gobbins area in order to

bring tourists to Whitehead

and this could affect that. “

There is a train of thought

that due to the planned

turbine being situated on the

flight path to the airport that a red light would have to be

placed on the turbine to alert

pilots of its whereabouts.

Bats could be attracted to

the light and barotrauma

could result.Barotrauma is

a condition that can affect

divers - it is suggested that

this could affect Bats, when

they get too close to the

turbines, the air affects them

and causes their insides to

pop, killing them instantly.

Mr Cameron was shown around the film set of Game of Thrones at the Paint Hall in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter during his stop on Tuesday morning. The visit comes as the election campaign steps it up a gear ahead of the 7 May.David Cameron said: “It’s one of the most important elections in generations and I wanted to come to all parts of the UK to make that point.”He was asked if he believes the Conservative Party could do business with the DUP in the event of a hung Parliament in Northern Ireland, Mr Cameron said: “I’m not aiming for a hung Parliament – I’m aiming for a

Conservative majority government.”“There are 30 days to go before the election and I’m going to do everything in my power to win that election.”“If I fall short you can ask me the question after that but until then I’m going to be campaigning all out for an overall majority.”The Prime Minister also mentioned he is “concerned” about the impasse over welfare reform but said the parties and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers are working to reach an agreement.David Cameron was in Scotland prior to his visit to NI and will be heading on to Wales and England later.

Carrickfergus CAB held its annual general meeting on Wednesday 25th June 2014 at 6.30pm in the Dobbs Room Town Hall

Carrickfergus. There was a good turnout to hear the new Chief Executive Anne Donaghy of Mid & East Antrim Council talk of her experience working in Council and her vision for the future of the new combined Council area of Ballymena, Larne & Carrickfergus. Anne addressed the meeting, thanking everyone for the invitation. She outlined her background working for councils. She spoke about the great value of Citizens Advice especially in the current economic setting. She sees the need for Advice services as a growing need and that money invested in CAB has been an excellent investment. She spoke of the need for evidence to support spending decisions. She referred to her new role and that of the councillors as they merge three councils into one. The importance of developing the area will be a major focus of the new council. Community planning will be an important part of the new council’s role. Mapping the needs will be an important starting point so that the needs of the community can be met. Having had one meeting with the council so far, she believes that advice services will be an important aspect of the work that the new council will wish to address. She ended by wishing CAB well in the future and she said she thoroughly looks forward to working with CAB in the future. James Macaulay Chair of the Management Committee thanked Anne for her address to the meeting and he reflected on some of the points made:Review of Public AdministrationAccessibility of CABAmalgamation with Ballymena & LarneShadow CAB management committeeProvision of services with a “bottom up” approach

James thanked everyone concerned with Carrickfergus CAB, the Management committee, Mary and her team for the excellent service they provide, commenting especially on the volunteers and referred to the vital function they fulfil. He thanked the council for their excellent support.

Managers Report 2013/142013/2014 has been another challenging year for clients of CAB. In this part of the world the

economic recession shows few signs of recovery; however the caring community is alive and well in the Borough with CAB providing a local service and exercising a desire to learn and implement new ideas.CAB continues to assist and aid our local community when dealing with inequalities

caused by disadvantage, lack of opportunity, a challenging economic climate and lack of awareness of welfare rights and responsibilities. This year we dealt with 6202 issues. Our Benefit Maximisation system enables us to inform clients of their entitlements; subsequently we have aided and assisted clients to access approximately an additional £800,000, which goes into the local economy. In January and March we successfully completed our External audit of the Quality of Advice and Governance. Our local Money Advice service continues to be vital with continual growing demand. It is important to reflect on the fact that individuals and families are helped and supported through very difficult times by our personal service in Bureau. Glynis our Money Adviser has successfully completed a course of Study with Staffordshire University and is now a Member of the Institute of Money Advisers (cert). Our local telephone/outreach

service is well embedded in our community activity, growing in demand, going from strength to strength. We subject our service to continuous improvement by assessing need

and implementing change as necessary. Our information sessions on CAB to local groups continues to operate effectively. The rise in the phenomenon of Food Banks continues throughout the town. CAB has a strong partnership with the local Storehouses in our Borough which are very capably run mostly from local churches. The necessity and value of their activity cannot and should not be understated. We have a dedicated local team, 4 core staff and 10 volunteers committed to the CAB service. We commend the work of our volunteers who provide a dedicated and professional service to the community in which we take great pride. I specifically wish to thank the core staff Glynis, Gillian and Fiona who provide daily support to me and the Volunteer advisers. We continue to develop and build on our good working relationship with Larne and Ballymena Bureaux to ensure readiness for 2015. As part of that process we were actively engaged in the establishment of a shadow committee in which we play an active role. Irrespective of any changes to reflect our new political structure the identity of our local Carrickfergus CAB will be maintained.

We will continue to lead, lobby and represent our clients concerns to ensure decision makers are advised and aware of the inequalities in our community. We acknowledge the need to continue to work in partnership with other Community groups to ensure that all our citizens receive a well rounded service. Finally I would like to thank all associated with CCAB, volunteers, Management committee, Carrickfergus Borough Council and CAB Regional office. We will provide support and assistance in the coming year to ensure our service continually improves and is enhanced by the change to local Councils.Mary McCreight June 2013/14

Kilcreggan Farm

GROWSwith new investment

Kilcreggan Homes in Carrickfergus began in the 1980’s when a group of people inspired by the idea of

Supported Living as developed by John O’Brien in the US decided to provide an alternative to the existing accommodation for adults with a learning disability. Following years of development, Kilcreggan first opened its doors to tenants in 1991 for supported living in Northern Ireland.

The support provided by Kilcreggan Homes is person centred. The support teamwork closely with tenants to enable the individual person to fully participate in all aspects of their own lives. Tenants are encouraged and enabled to contribute in a meaningful way to their local community and to understand their rights, as well as their responsibilities.

The small urban farm owned by Kilcreggan provides opportunities for Kilcreggan tenants, as well as other service users on day placement, to develop skills in animal care and horticulture. Training provided on the farm develops employability skills and teamwork. The farm provides a tranquil place where tenants, service users and members of the local community can meet and socialise.

Carrickfergus Borough Council have issued a cheque for £10,000 to redevelop the ‘Urban Farm.’The plans include a new coffee shop at the entrance to the venue.

“We’re not quite sure on the details of the landscaping project yet, but it will start as soon as the coffee shop is completed.” Damian, the manager at Kilcreggan Farm said.

The farm is one of three projects which benefitted from the ending of the local council this week.

Damian Cassidy and Alan Campbell from Killcreggan Urban Farm receiving a legacy cheque from outoing Deputy Mayor Lynn McClurg and Chief Executive Sheila McClelland.

WORLD’S LARGEST RABBIT HANDS OVER CROWN

Worlds biggest rabbit about to hand title to his on giant son. Darius who currently holds the record mea-sures 4ft 4in long and weighing in at three and a half stone is about to hand over his title to his baby son Jeff. The world’s biggest bunny has got compe-tition from his own son this Easter. Dad Darius weighing three and a half stone and measuring over four foot in length holds the current official title. Unfortunately for Darius he is being challenged by Jeff, his bounc-ing baby offspring who is currently measuring 3ft 8in. Seven-year-old Ava Johnson struggles to pick

up the pair of Continental Giant rabbits due to their sheer size. Each day the pair Darius and Jeff chow down on a huge bowl of specialists rabbit food, and a bale of hay a week. Not only do they get their special rabbit food, they also munch on 2000 crrots and 700 apples every year. Costing a whopping £5,000 a year to feed these giant bunnies.

MARINA MOTORSCAR SALES & SERVICING Satellite technology and the benefits that come

with it have been around us all for many years in both our business and homes environments

Sky TV, live sporting events, shopping, news etc. We all have become accustomed and enjoy the services at the touch of a button. In the business sector benefits including faster and secure data systems, information services, business TV, remote monitoring to mention but a few. These days another use for Satellite technology is finding its way into our living rooms and office’s, Satellite Delivered Broadband. Satellite delivered Broadband means your internet service comes into your home or business via a satellite dish and not on a telephone line that is the usual manner in most cases.A huge advantage of Satellite delivered broadband is for those of us in rural locations and indeed sometimes not so rural that do not have access to a high speed broadband network. Satellite

delivered Broadband gives those same people the opportunity to have a service with realistic working speeds that they otherwise would not have.Download speeds of 20kbps and upload speeds of 6kbps are achievable from some of the current operators with data packages starting from 5GB per month to 150GB per With these sort of figures Satellite delivered Broadband could be a solution for many individuals and business in the community especially in the more rural and remote locations.

SATELLITE DELIVERED BROADBAND

WE HAVE MOVED – BUT NOT THAT FAR!!Residents in the Lincolnshire community of Glentworth have come up with a novel way of slowing traffic passing by their houses – by dressing a dummy in a police uniform and propping it up at the entrance to the village. The high-visibility scarecrow has proved an effective method of deceiving drivers into slowing down on the village's 30mph roads, but it could soon be removed now that it has come to the attention of the police and county council. Alan Aistrup, head of highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "I did laugh when I saw this, and I can understand why somebody's put it up," "But that said, it's not something that we can leave in place so we will speak to the parish council with a view to having it removed." However, the scarecrow's demise might not be in vain, after Lincolnshire Police announced it was to investigate the problem of speeding

around the village, following this novel attempt by residents to get drivers to slow down. A police spokesman said: "This has only just been brought to our attention so we have yet to see the scarecrow and properly assess the situation. "Whilst we praise the ingenuity of this resident, who clearly has the best interests of their community at heart, the concern is that it could actually be a distraction to drivers. "If we conduct any form of speed enforcement, we do so with appropriate signage."

Northern Ireland Foot & Ankle ClinicWe are one of the UK’s leading centres for the non-surgical management of foot and ankle pain and we are Northern Irelands only provider of the new Ease Forward Ankle Rocker System. Designed originally for patients with traumatic ankle injuries, this device is now being widely used for all sorts of ankle and foot pain.See our Testimonials at www.footandankleclinicni.com or why not call us and take the first step towards walking pain free?

Insist on the

best

Telephone : 028 9083 3568

I originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured and it came out of its socket. This resulted

in my ankle being surgically pinned. The pain really started about 15 years ago and it steadily got worse over time. To the point where it was difficult to work or to go for even a short walk. The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little movement which made it hard to walk over rough ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle but it was very impractical and the pain in my ankle was unbearable when I took it off. David says “The secret of the rocker is that unlike most ankle braces it is designed to facilitate movement not to reduce it. By mimicking the ankles own movement it reduces stress on the ankle foot and lower limb. Our patients often try a sample device during the examination to allow them to really get the feeling of walking properly again. My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox Newsletter and I read an article about a new shoe insert which had been designed and

developed by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic. I phoned and made an appointment to see David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the device. David examined my ankle and said that the restriction in movement was the cause of my pain and that I would benefit from the new rocker device. The rocker has to be custom made so about a week later I had it fitted.

With this type of ankle injury you can be in pain every time you stand up. For many of our patients just being able to walk around the local shops can be a real challenge. For some this can be very depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be able to help them walk pain free again.

It has been wonderful to be able to do a full days work with no severe pain and not having to limp around at night. I would recommend to anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker a go as I have found it to be of great benefit.

Local Business – The Music Rooms Releases Charity Single To Raise Money For Hope4EllsaLocal business man Rodney Beggs and a team of colleagues and friends from The Music Rooms have released a single in order to raise money for a little girl called Ellsa Adams, perhaps better known as ‘Hope4Ellsa’.Rodney met Ellsa’s parents in the ward of the Royal Victoria Hospital in June last year when he was sitting by the bedside of his own daughter, Mary as they battled through some major complications that were both anticipated before birth and palpable after he and his wife Sinead’s little girl was born.Rodney Commented, ‘We are very much on our own journey with our daughter, Mary, however slowly but surely we are beginning to get some movement on her treatment.’ Mary will be undergoing major brain surgery in the summer to hopefully tackle some of her constant daily struggles, however the same cannot be said for Aaron, Leanne and little Ellsa.Ellsa has been diagnosed with a condition called CDLK5. Initially the money being raised was to help toward taking her to America for expert treatment on her epilepsy but since this diagnosis, funds will now be going toward giving Ellsa the best chance at life through a number of therapies such as Visual, Music, Water, Physio, OT and many more. Ellsa’s dad Aaron said ‘if we

can get Ellsa to do one thing that the doctors and medical books say she shouldn’t do with her condition, we have won the battle against CDLK5’. When asked about the song, Rodney said,

‘I wrote the song while sitting by my daughter Mary’s bedside in the RVH. I had no real intentions of doing anything with it bar using it as a therapy for myself when times got pretty tough but then in a desire to do something to help little Ellsa I realised that with a little help from some friends I could put something together that would hopefully surpass

a mere affordable donation.’ ‘ Having been in Leanne and Aaron’s position ourselves with Mary, I can empathise with the complete unknown and uncertainty surrounding the life of a precious daughter and with this in mind I wanted to do something that would hopefully have an impact.’ ‘I am deeply indebted to The Gribbin Girls, Frankie McClay (Einstein Studios), Jonathan Dempster, Jonathan Law, Aaron Blair, Green Pastures Church, Peter McNicholl and Ballyprint.com who all gave up their time so freely and willingly to help make this happen’.And so folks, that’s the story behind the song, now all you have to do is download it, share it and tell your friends and family to do the same! The song can be purchased through the website www.songforellsa.co.uk. Thank you in advance!

Thanks to Learning Breakthrough our Autistic son has been able to show emotion in ways we never thought possible. He expresses love, I am regularly covered in kisses and he tells me every day “mummy – I love you so so much”. We always have a good chat at bedtime and recently when I kissed him and told him I loved him he said “mummy – you made my heart grow”. A rather profound statement for any 5 year old but for a child who barely spoke a year before it felt like nothing short of a miracle. It has been a hard road from when I first started to notice my son wasn’t reaching his milestones when he was about 2.5. His speech and understanding of language weren’t progressing, he was a very strong willed child, emotionally volatile, preferred his own company, had poor balance and spatial awareness, refused most foods and began to hand flap and twist when excited – all red flags for ASD.As time went on his autistic traits became more pronounced and I felt like I was losing my son. He found it difficult to engage in conversation and to make eye contact. He paid very little attention to his little sister and wouldn’t let anyone do anything for him except me. He refused to go anywhere, his anxiety was taking over all our lives – he wouldn’t go to the park, to visit family, to soft play areas or birthday parties ….. all things a 3 year old should enjoy. Not to mention the things a 3 year old doesn’t enjoy – paediatrician appointments, assessments, occupational therapy, speech therapy …. it was a nightmare for both of us. I have always loved and accepted my son for who he is but what I’ve refused to accept is that I can’t do anything to help him. I began researching

anything and everything that could help my beautiful boy. A friend told me about an advert she heard on the radio about the Learning Breakthrough Program. I decided to go along to an information evening where I listened to Susan describe her journey and the science behind the LBP. I left that night full of hope and certain that I had found the answer to helping my son.Susan came to visit us in our home where he would feel comfortable and relaxed – he had just turned 4. We discussed the exercises that he would be capable of doing given his age and I started with a few minutes once a day building up to ten minutes a day. He wasn’t able to catch so I started with blowing bubbles and getting him to pop them whilst balancing on the board. Gradually he learned to catch and has become an expert at the pendulum ball and bouncy balls. We can’t do all of the exercises yet but he’s only just turned 5.I can tell you it is hard work and is not for the faint hearted but neither are the challenges

of raising a child with autism – the daily battles of teeth brushing, dressing, going to school, dinnertime …. I thought, what’s one more thing to add to the day when it could potentially make all those other struggles

disappear?!Within weeks of starting the program he began to become an adventurous little boy – my son learned to ride a bike, something I thought I might never see! Rather than cry in the car outside the park he asked to go and climbed everything he could without fear. He started school in September and has settled in so well and coped with the curriculum without difficulty. His teacher told me recently that he’s a very popular member of the class and he comes home every day with stories of everything he’s done and who he’s played with. Going to parties fills him with excitement and I watch him join in with his friends and it fills me with pride – these are the things that other parents might take for granted, as I’m sure I would have too had my precious son not taught me what really matters

in life.I cannot remember the last time he had a serious meltdown, he still gets upset and frustrated but he expresses his feelings now rather than letting them get the better of him. He has a lovely relationship with his sister now and he has become very close to his dad whereas before he didn’t really let anyone get too close except me. He was recently discharged from community speech therapy because his assessment scores had improved so much, his speech therapist also commented that she didn’t see the same anxiety problems and unwillingness to cooperate.I couldn’t have done this without Susan’s encouragement and support. Her office sign reads ‘Unlock your potential’ and that is exactly what has happened to our child – he is no longer ‘locked in’. She truly wants the very best for every family that she works with. I am so grateful that Susan and the LBP came into our lives. Previously the future filled me with overwhelming fear, I still worry – as every mother does, but not to the extent that I used to. I’m happy knowing I’m doing my best for my son and I’m watching him grow into a wonderful little man. We’re one year on and I’m aware that we still have a long road ahead as he still has some problems but I watch my son now enjoying his life – laughing, singing and dancing and I think to myself that anything’s possible …..Fiona Loughlin - Newtowanbbey

Carrickfergus Borough Council in conjunction with Carrickfergus Regeneration Partnership have beensuccessful at drawing down funding from the Department of Social Development for the Revitalise scheme. The initiative aims to regenerate commercial districts by providing

technical assistance and funding to design and improve storefronts and streets, promote districts and assist in community-driven efforts to improve and retain business.North Street and Market Place availed of the funding last year and now improvements to the West Street Properties are well under way. Works

have included paint works to properties, canopy replacements and virtual windows to derelict properties. The work completed compliments the public realm improvement scheme and the addition of the historic timeline at Market Place has proven very popular with tourists visiting Carrickfergus.

Many new shops have opened recently and creation of café culture has transformed the town. The Council hopes to attract further funding to carry out the improvement works on the rest of the town centre.

Virtually every child loves playing on jungle gyms. The jungle gym has been a part of childhoods for generations because of its many benefits. Parents know that jungle gyms promote healthy development while creating opportunities for fun. Buying a jungle gym is an excellent way to provide kids an outlet for fun and exercise.

The History of Jungle GymsAlthough generations of children have grown up playing on jungle gyms, its roots date back to the year 1920. Inspired by his father's idea to teach kids three-dimensional mathematic principles using an outdoor climbing structure, Sebastian Hinton designed the first jungle gym for a school in Illinois. Although the original design was made from metal, modern versions can also be made using wood, rope, plastic, and other materials. Today, jungle gyms are found at parks, schools, and family backyards.

Why Parents Should Buy Their Kids a Jungle GymThe idea of a jungle gym is simple, but the benefits are many. Kids learn physical, mental, emotional, and social skills. In addition, jungle gyms are easy to integrate into a family lifestyle. They can provide quality family fun without the family even having to leave the backyard.

1. Convenient ExerciseMost children do not get as much exercise as they should. Studies show that many parents are simply too busy to take their kids to the park to play. In result, many parents encourage their children to use the computer, TV, or video games because those activities can be done at home without supervision. In a day when childhood obesity is a growing issue, most parents want their children to have opportunities to be active but simply don't know how to incorporate physical activity into an already busy schedule. The jungle gym is the perfect solution

for such a dilemma. Although parents should supervise their kids while they play on the jungle gym, it is extremely convenient to have a jungle gym in the backyard. Parents can get a lot of work done while observing kids through a door or window, or they can even work outside on some patio furniture.

2. ImaginationThe jungle gym requires children to engage in free play, a type of recreation in which children use imagination and creativity to direct their own fun. Kids of all ages can adapt their experiences to satisfy their own imaginations. Children transform the jungle gym into whatever setting they choose, from a medieval castle to a futuristic spaceship. The possibilities are endless. This kind of play brings out kids' intrinsic storytelling and acting skills. Such skills are important to develop because they promote expression. Too many kids have creative scenarios spoon-fed to them through the media, but jungle gyms force kids to use their imaginations to have fun.

3. Sharing and CooperationChildren can play on jungle gyms alone, but the experience tends to be better when other people participate. When kids play with siblings and friends, they learn how to share, take turns, and cooperate. Each child has a complex imaginative scenario to offer, so the children have to combine ideas and compromise. Children eventually learn that they have more fun when everyone else is having fun, and it

becomes less difficult to play together. This can be especially beneficial for siblings who do not always get along with each other. Older siblings in particular will learn how to involve their younger siblings in their games.

4. Appropriate for Every Age

Bigger kids love traditional jungle gyms, but parents worry that young children will not

be able to safely participate on a full-size jungle gym. That's why some companies have designed jungle gyms for smaller, younger kids. Small jungle gyms tend to require less assembly, and they can even fit in yards that wouldn't necessarily fit a traditional jungle gym. Some jungle gyms are even designed for toddlers and might fit on an apartment balcony or patio. No matter how old or young a child is, jungle gyms are a great way to provide opportunities for fun and physical activity.

5. Improved SafetyNewer jungle gyms are a lot safer than previous designs. Many jungle gyms are made from materials like plastic that are less likely to cause injuries. While parents should always teach their kids how to safely use the jungle gym and should always supervise their children's outdoor play, parents can trust that jungle gyms are built to high standards of safety. One remaining concern is that children are prone to fall off of jungle gyms. To prevent major injuries, many parents put the jungle gym on top of a material that absorbs impact. Wood chips are especially good for

something like this. Never put a jungle gym on top of a hard surface like concrete or asphalt.

6. Kids Conquer FearsJungle gyms inspire kids to be adventurous and to overcome fears. While many children have an innate sense of invincibility, other kids get quite scared by activities like climbing. Kids who are initially afraid of using a jungle gym slowly become more willing to try more adventurous things on it. They can overcome a fear of heights and falling. Many kids miss out on fun activities because they are afraid of trying them. This often carries into adulthood. Parents who help their children become confident with jungle gyms often see that adventurous spirit continue to blossom.

7. Lasts a Long TimeWhen parents follow the proper maintenance schedule, jungle gyms can last a decade or longer. Thus, a jungle gym is really an investment. It can keep kids entertained over summer breaks and weekends for years to come. It is a quality improvement to any backyard, even if a family thinks that they might move before they get full use out of a jungle gym. No matter what hobbies and interests children develop, they will always enjoy the fun, exercise, and relaxation associated with jungle gyms. As kids grow up, they will share many great experiences with friends and family on their jungle gym.

ConclusionJungle gyms are known to promote excellent physical, mental, emotional, and social health. They have been popular for decades because of their timeless appeal to every kid's desire to learn, grow, create, imagine, pretend, and be active. With all of the benefits of jungle gyms, it is no wonder that so many parents choose to put one in their backyard. With a little bit of research, it's easy to find a great jungle gym and have it shipped directly to one's home.

FUN DAY AT TAYLOR’S AVENUE

by MICHAELH U G H E S

It’s a big well done to the Swift pool team as they have been crowned 2014/15 City Air Express Carrick and District Pool League champions. Paul Roberts’ men secured the

league title with aplomb as they took all the points in their fixtures against Doagh Weapons (10-4) Eastway (8-6) and GWMSC (9-5) to secure their first ever league title. They will take their place in the Champions of Champions alongside Greenisland Galacticos in June. The quest for an undefeated season continues and they beat Hitmen and Her convincingly 12-2 to stay on track. Just two fixtures remain for the champions but it’s by no means a foregone conclusion as they host the Whitehead Spartans and have a tricky tie away to outgoing champions the Galacticos.Johnny Thompson’s Scorpions clinched second place with a 10-4 win against Greenisland Colts. It’s a great achievement by the league stalwarts who have benefited greatly from the acquisitions of Darren Whiteside and Paul Kerr.Third place will be contested by Galacticos and Spartans but with the Galacticos taking a great 10-4 win away to the Whitehead men it looks like it could be all over bar the shouting.Alpha have won the Wooden Spoon but there is still loads to play for as the Castle, Knockagh and Harbour cup places are still undecided and with just two league fixtures remaining there is still plenty for everyone to play for.Player of the Year is still undecided and there are ten people in the running for the coveted accolade. Elsewhere champions have been crowned in the “other” categories and it’s a big well done to Robert Hawkins who was crowned Seniors champion with an epic 6-2 win over Marty Goudie in the final. He was prevented from doing the double in the Masters by Alan Corrigan who won that final by the same scoreline. Sara Greenberg was crowned Ladies champion for the third consecutive year beating Jean McIllroy 6-1. Lee Topping was crowned U23 champion disposing of Reece McMurtry 6-1 in the final but Reece, the league’s youngest player, made up for it by capturing the U18 title with a 6-4 win over Thomas Fleming in the final. The Swift Sports Bar’s St Patrick’s Day tournament was won by Dee Irwin who beat Shaun McAlister in the final.

Iveagh Utd 4 v 2 Kilroot Rec FCKilroot scorers: Rob Armstrong, Joe McDoonell @ Brook Activity Centre.Kilroot went into today’s match with Iveagh knowing that nothing more than a win would do in their long struggle for survival in 1C. Kilroot took the game to their opponents from the off and created a couple of half chances before the old Kilroot jinx which has been there for the last 3 seasons came to haunt them again when on 18mins they conceded another soft goal against the run of play when from a low cross the unfortunate Jonny Maxwell sliced the ball into his own net. Worse was to follow 6mins later when on 24mins after some poor defending Iveagh went 2-0 ahead.. 30mins Kilroot got a goal back when Rob Armstrong scored a thunderous header from a set piece. With Kilroot pressing for their 2nd a long hit and hope clearance from an Iveagh defender caught the Kilroot defence on back foot with Stuart Hamilton racing from his line the Iveagh forward lobbed him to give them a 2 goal cushion on 35mins.. 41mins Kilroot pulled another goal back when Joe O’Donnell scored with another great header from another set piece delivered by Benson. Half-time finished 3-2. The 2nd half started with Kilroot pressing again and Armstrong again coming close from a couple of set pieces. Kilroot’s first sub Lee Steele replaced Andrew Benson 52 mins. .Iveagh defended in numbers and made it hard for Kilroot to break them down. Second sub 77 mins young Nathan Banks on his come back game with Kilroot replaced Ryan Clokey. On 78mins Iveagh

got their 4th goal. 83mins Iveagh awarded a very soft penalty which was blasted over the bar, justice was done, this gave Kilroot the belief they could get something out of the game in the final 7mins and Jim Thompson forced a good save from the home keeper and Jonny Maxwell putting a header just wide. The game could’ve turned ugly in final couple mins when a disgraceful challenge on Darren McKinty resulted only in a yellow card for the offender when it should’ve been a straight red and possible court appearance assault ? In the end it was a tall order for Kilroot and with the manager having to chop and change his squad every week it made the fight for survival very difficult as boys pulling out hours before matches for whatever reason. Once again when you concede soft goals early then you’re chasing the game and when you don’t take your chances its an up hill battle and too many times this season that has happenedKilroot team: S Hamilton, D Johnston, J McDonnell, P Tumilty, J Maxwell, R Armstrong Thompson, D McKinty, J McFetdrige, R Clokey (N Banks 77) A Benson (L Steele 52)

Nortel 0-2 Albert Foundry It was an even enough first half, which was pretty uneventful with no clear cut chances for either side. Nortel defended well with Dale Fenner standing out at centre back in the absence of Ryan Cardwell. The deadlock was broken when Nortel conceded after a mistake on 68 mins but then David Freyne had chance to

equalise from the penalty spot on 75 mins but the keeper saved it. Jackie Moore was brought down for the penalty. As Nortel pushed for an equaliser Foundry caught them on the break in the 91st minute. The score-line finished 0-2. Nortel Manager Lee McCartney said “It was a very strong defensive performance where we frustrated them into half chances before gifting them a 1st goal, but we didn’t create too much going forward. I was still disappointed not to share the points however!”Nortel Team: Kris Malone, Chris Monteith, Dale Fenner, David Freyne, Timmy Clarke, Wayne Lorrimer, Lee Lenaghan, Craig Caughey, Tommy Hammil, Jordan Clarke, Jackie Moore. Subs Terry Kirkpatrick 70 mins Caughey. Unused Kyle Dunlop and James Tohall.

Krag Albion 3-1 (A.E.T.) v Sport & Leisure Reserves The Albion took on Sport and Leisure in the Semi-Final of the Linda Welshmen memorial cup @ beltoy knowing Newington YC Reserves await the winners in the final. Albion had all the early chances in the 1st half through Jack Lamont and Dean Meneely but they couldn’t find the back of the net, they then got hit with a sucker punch when Sport and Leisure scored against the run of play when the ball dropped to Neil Corr who found loads of room and had all the time in the world to hit home a thunderous shot into to the roof of the net, Dean Haggan Skipper for the Albion in nets could only get a slight touch to what was a great finish, Manager

Peter Owens then changed from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 formation and it was this that got the Albion playing the way they can with Arron Anderson and Andy Armstrong taking control of the game in midfield and Jonny Robb grabbed the equaliser 10 mins before the half time break with some excellent link up play with Dean Meneely, the 2nd half was played out with again Albion having all the chances with Noel Williams, Jamie Stirling and Jonny Robb all having opportunities to put the game to bed in normal time and when Andy Armstrong hit the post it was extra time or penalties that was going to decide this cup tie, the 1st half of extra time was when the game came into life and Albion took control and found the net twice with Jonny Robb grabbing his 2nd of the day and Dean Meneely also on the scoresheet after some excellent build up play and calm finishing put the game to bed, in the 2nd half of extra time was played out with no real play of any note with the Albion keeping possession and trying to see the game to a finish, off came the tired Andy Armstrong, Dean Meneely and Jack Lamont replaced by Tony Matthews, Dee Gibb and Matthew Mcfaul who helped see the game to a finish 3-1 after extra time.Albion squad: Dean Haggan, Marc Kelly, Jackson Griffith, Jamie Stirling, Scott Ward, Aaron Anderson, Andy Armstrong, Noel Williams, Jack Lamont, Jonny Robb, Dean Meenely sub: Tony Matthews, Dee Gibb, Matthew Mcfaul.Man of the match: Aaron Anderson The teams do it all over again this Saturday this time in the semi final of the canada trophy a cup that the Albion hold from last season.

Ballyclare Comrades 0-2 Carrick RangersSaturday 4th April 2015 – Belfast Telegraph NIFL Championship 1

Ballyclare Comrades: Paddy Flood, Craig Reid (51’), Chris Getty, Adam McCart, Kyle Buckley, Samuel McIlveen, Simon McGowan (33’), Andrew Simpson (72’), Eoin Kane, Ben Browne (58’), Chris Trussell. Subs: Darren Doherty, Andrew Doyle, Gary Brown (58’), Peter Duffin (33’) (40’), Randal Reid (72’)Carrick Rangers: Neeson, Smyth, Traynor, Arthur, Kelly, Watson, Harmon, Cherry, Chines, Roy, McCloskey. Subs: McKenna, Lynch, Lagan, Dick, McConnell. Comrades couldn’t dent the Carrick title charge, when they fell to defeat despite aspirited second half display at Dixon Park. For this match, manager David Dorrian had to do without tricky winger Joel Cooper,so Simon McGowan came into a reshuffled midfield. The first half hour of the game was dominated by the visitors, with Comradesstruggling to get out of their own territory.

In the 10th minute Carrick came close when a free-kick near the by-line was pulled back to Smyth just inside the box and he rifled a rising shot just over the bar.A minute later Carrick striker Roy got to the ball before ‘keeper Paddy Flood, but hiseffort on the turn from 12 yards went narrowly over. On 17 minutes the visitors grabbed a deserved lead. A ball in from the right was not cleared by the home defence and Harmon was able to fire a shot in through a crowd of players from 10 yards. Carrick might have emphasised their dominance with a second goal in the 25thminute, when Roy got his head to a deep free-kick into the box, but headed just overfrom 7 yards. Then, five minutes later, a cross from the right found McCloskey at the back post, but his header fell narrowly wide from 5 yards. Comrades Manager Dorrian, seeing his side being outplayed, made a tactical change, with Peter Duffin coming on to replace Simon McGowan. The ship was steadied somewhat, but Comrades supporters were still relieved that their side went in only one behind at half-time. The second half was to be a different affair, with the home side giving a much

improved performance. However, on 52 minutes Paddy Flood had to tip over a freekick from the left edge of the box played in by McCloskey. Two minutes later, the home side at last showed some threat, when a free-kick into the box was met by an Andrew Simpson header in a crowd of players, but his effort from 5 yards went just over. The introduction of the lively Gary Brown just before the half hour helped to perk upthe home side’s performance and they began to look the likelier side to score next. On 65 minutes they came close when an outswinging corner played was met by agood headed effort from Eoin Kane 9 yards out, which would have nestled in thebottom corner of the net, only for a fine save from Neeson. Five minutes later Kane had another good effort, when he got on the end of a freekick played into the box and fired a first-time shot from 16 yards a couple of feet over the bar. Comrades’ supporters probably got the idea that it was not to be their side’s day in the 80th minute. A ball played in from the right by Craig Reid deflected off defender’s boot and the ball spun high across the goal, where Randal

Reid rose to get his head to it 3 yards out. It looked a certain goal, but somehow ‘keeper Neeson made a wonderful reflex save to deny the Comrades substitute what would have been a deserved equaliser at that stage. Even then Comrades gave the visitors another major scare in the 87th minute, when Chris Trussell did very well to muscle his way past two defenders in the box, but his resulting effort from 5 yards was kept out by a superb block from defender Arthur. The result was settled in the 89th minute in cruel fashion for the home side. They were pressing forward from a corner, when Carrick launched a quick counter-attack, which ended with the ball flying across the Comrades goal, where Craig Reid attempted a desperate clearance only to hit the unfortunate Chris Getty and the ball rebounded back into the net. Comrades can take heart from a much improved second half display against quality opponents. However, the result adds to the importance of Comrades next match at home to PSNI on 18 April in what is a real relegation battle six-pointer.
