Cancer Focus Northern Ireland has teamed up with Lidl NI once again to offer Carrickfergus schools the chance to win £4,000 by taking part in the FREE Lidl Fit Factor programme and improving children’s health through active play for P3 &P4 classes. Covering elements of the KS1 curriculum, the Lidl Fit Factor aims to teach children the importance of a healthy lifestyle – how eating healthier, exercising regularly and looking after ourselves today can seriously reduce long term health problems tomorrow. Niamh McDaid, Cancer Prevention Officer at Cancer Focus NI said: “The programme is free and straightforward. The children simply have to design an exciting poster highlighting ways to be healthy. It can focus on healthy foods, food labels, physical activity and lifestyles and the more creative, the better! “Nowadays we’re very aware of how poor nutrition and lack of physical activity can lead to obesity, a greater risk of cancers and other serious health conditions. The good news, however, is that nearly 50% of all cancer deaths could be prevented by improved nutrition and regular exercise.

“With almost 20% of children in Northern Ireland classed as overweight before they start primary school1, it’s clearly a problem that needs to be addressed. We believe that the Lidl Fit Factor programme prompts pupils to think about healthy lifestyle choices and hopefully carry these choices with them throughout their lives.” Sinead Flynn, Corporate Social Responsibility Assistant, Lidl NI added: “The Lidl Fit Factor is now celebrating its 10th year and has more schools participating than ever before. It’s a fantastic resource for teachers offering great ideas, fun activities and educational games to help children learn about healthy living.” To enter, all you need to do, is follow these three simple steps:1. Register now for free and receive your Fit Factor booklet in April2. Submit your class’s masterpiece in May3. A local celebrity and artist will judge the winner in June To register please contact Joanna Porter ([email protected]) or phone 028 9068 0735 for more information.

Issue 8 - March 2015

Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, Roy Beggs, has warned that proposed cuts of just under 10% to the budget of the Northern Ireland Fire Service could potentially put lives at risk.Mr Beggs said:“I have nothing but respect for the men and women of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. They put their lives on the line to save others; there can be few more noble causes.  Cuts to their budget of around 10% are worrying for management and front-line staff.  It’s disappointing that the Health Minister does not view our Fire Service as an essential front-line emergency service.  “Budget cuts must not compromise public safety. The Minister’s proposed cuts will impact on response times and will undoubtedly put lives at risk.“The worrying lack of clarity around the future of the Fire Service budget is making it extremely difficult for management to

plan for next year. This is made even harder when their colleagues in Services in

the rest of the UK have the ability to plan their budgets for the

next five years and are actively doing so.

“I have been a consistent supporter of the men and women of our Fire Service and want them to be helped, not hampered by Government.  In

particular I want to see continued support for

their successful large animal rescue scheme which I know is

saving rural lives. “You cannot stretch people who are committed to their job and community beyond breaking point and I urge the Minster of Health to think again about his proposed budget cuts.  Before any decisions are finalised he needs to meet with the front-line fire fighters and listen to their opinion – they save lives – a 10% budget cut will damage the service and put lives at risk.”

You've probably heard a lot about the Welfare Reform Bill that is currently subject to approval by the Northern Ireland Assembly. Many existing means-tested benefits are due to be abolished and replaced by a new benefits system. Universal Credit will replace many existing benefitsUniversal Credit (UC) is a single means-tested benefit which will be paid to people of working age. It will replace most means-tested benefits including:

Allowance (ESA)

Personal Independence Payment will replace Disability Living Allowance Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be paid

to you if you're very ill or disabled and have trouble getting around or need help with day-to-day living. It will replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA). PIP will be paid to people aged between 16 and 64. Employment and Support Allowance If you're Getting contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), you may be affected by the proposed changes. If the changes go ahead and you're in the Work-related Activity Group, you will only be able to get contribution-based ESA for a maximum period of one year. Time spent in the Work-related Activity Group before the change takes place counts towards the year, so if you've already been getting it for a year and you are in this group, your contribution-based ESA will stop immediately. You won't be

affected if you're in the Support Group. A Benefit cap will be introducedA Benefit Cap means there will be a limit on

the total amount of money from certain

working age. Parts of the Social Fund to be abolished. Currently, if you get certain benefits, you may be able to get a payment or loan from the Social Fund. These are

meant to help towards the costs of

unexpected or one-off expenses. However, as part of the welfare benefit reforms, parts of the Social Fund will be abolished while others, such as funeral or maternity expenses and budgeting loans, will be paid under Universal Credit. A new service called Discretionary Support will offer grant and loan payments if you are in extreme hardship. Will your income from benefits be lower

after the changes? To begin with, people getting certain benefits will be protected if their income drops once they move onto Universal Credit. This is called transitional protection. There is no transitional protection for people currently getting Housing Benefit. This means that your income may go down as soon as the new Housing Benefit rules become law.

allyclare Male Choir is more than halfway through its programme of engagements for the 2014/15 and its 81st season. It has been entertaining audiences throughout the length and breadth of the province with a wide variety of choral music under the expert guidance of Conductor Paul Briggs and Accompanist and Deputy Conductor Sheelagh Greer. Choir members have travelled to Bellenaleck in the West, Magilligan and Portstewart in the North and most recently entertained the Percy French Society at its dinner in Helens Bay Golf Club where, after just three rehearsals the choir had added two Percy French arrangements to its repertoire . A date for the diary has to be the Annual Gala Concert on Saturday 9th May in Church Buildings aka.the Spires Centre in Belfast. The choir is delighted to welcome as its guest artist the renowned Welsh tenor Wynne Evans for his debut stage appearance in the province. Wynne is the opera singer known to millions throughout the UK as the face and voice of the GoCompare.com TV adverts. This multi-million pound advertising campaign has made Wynne a household name. He has performed many roles

concert in his Sacred Heart Parish church in Ballyclare on Friday 6th March. Two days later it travels to Lisnaskea for another concert in Holy Trinity church. The current season is scheduled to end on 24th May with an engagement in Limavady. All the engagement details and other relevant choir information can be found on the website at www.ballyclaremalechoir.com The choir members continue their support of a worthwhile charity in each September to May season. The charity is chosen exclusively by the chairman and for this season Colin Campbell chose “Arts Care” based in Crescent Gardens in Belfast. At each and every Wednesday practice the members make a voluntary financial contribution and the total collected over the season is handed over, usually at the choir AGM in May. The mission statement for Arts Care is....”To enable people in health and social care to transform their lives through participation in creative activities.” The charity founded in 1991, is a unique Arts and Health Charity based in Northern Ireland. In partnership with Health and Social Care Trusts throughout Northern Ireland, Arts Care engages 19 Artists-in-Residence, a team of Northern Ireland Clown Doctors and many project artists who facilitate and co-ordinate participatory workshops and performances. Believing in the benefits of creativity to well-being, Arts Care makes all forms of art accessible to patients, clients, residents and staff in health and social care settings. Research has shown that Art in health and social care has many benefits for patients, including self-developing confidence, self-esteem and improving social skills, to name but a few.

Information regarding participating artists and activities of the charity can be found on its website www.artscare.co.uk.

The Larne Line Passenger Group (LLPG), in conjunction with Transport NI (Department for Regional Department, DRD) held a very successful Public Meeting to gather community support for proposed road safety improvements at Ballycarry Railway Station on Thursday 29th January at 7.30pm at Ballycarry Community Centre. The Larne Line Passenger Group was set up almost 10 years ago by train users who wanted to see improved services for all passengers on the Larne Line.  Over this time, its members have devoted much of their time and effort in lobbying for safety improvements at Ballycarry Railway Station. The meeting was attended by approximately 60 people despite attrocious snow conditions, which made the access to Ballycarry Community Centre extremely hazardous to both cars and pedestrians. Many apologised beforehand for not being able to attend due to weather or personal reasons, with supportive emails wishing the very best for the meeting. 51 people signed in favour of the proposed scheme, whilst a very small number of those attended voiced concerns, in terms of the impact it would have in slowing down the speed of traffic in the area, the scheme not including for a pick-up/drop off point and the perceived lack of co-ordination between DRD, Larne Council and Translink in agreeing long term measures. The consensus from those attended was that the time has come to introduce measures to improve pedestrian access to prevent pedestrians being knocked down by vehicles and also to encourage more people to use Ballycarry Railway Station. Many residents have stated that they currently have to use Whitehead’s Station due to the poor access, fear of being knocked down and lack of parking at Ballycarry. There was overwhelming support for adding in the near future a pick-up/drop off/turning point and developing a Park and Ride facility at the Station. Only 2 days prior to the meeting, a train commuter crossing the bridge on his way home from work had to be hospitalised after he was hit and injured by a van as he crossed over the bridge. It has also emerged that in 2004 a motorbike rider was killed also on this spot and 3 years ago, a horse had to be put down at this spot after its trailer overturned. The proposed measures presented by DRD (Transport NI) consist of a continuous footpath on the Larne side of the bridge, a small section of 1.8 metre width footpath on the other side of the bridge and a safe crossing point for pedestrians. In order to enable this, the width of the bridge will be narrowed down to one lane, with a set of intelligent traffic lights to each slope to the station which will regulate the traffic as it approaches them. Mrs Elena Aceves-Cully, Chair of the LLPG, viewed the strong level of support in this campaign as a major step in securing long term improvements for this area, to benefit Islandmagee, Ballycarry, Whitehead and Larne Lough as a whole.“Residents kept saying how dangerous this area is both for pedestrians and vehicle users, someone is going to get killed” is the general comment, something needs to be done now, we cannot afford to wait another 10 years for a

better scheme. We acknowledge public finances will be more strained in the coming year with the announced 20% cuts to DRD’s budget. We are being realistic and pragmatic in seeing this as a first step, with more improvements to come should all relevant parties (Council, MP,

MLAs, DRD, Translink and PSNI) get their heads together and agree

on a joint approach. This is an ideal opportunity, with The

Gobbins opening in the spring and planned to be a big tourist attraction for Northern Ireland. Tourists will want to arrive by train and Ballycarry makes the

ideal destination. We have suggested that the Station

should be renamed “The Gobbins” to promote its use.

There was strong presence from the local MP Sammy Wilson, Stewart Dixson MLA,

Larne Councillors, PSNI, Translink Management, local community associations and business owners. This is a key step in making this area safe for pedestrians and vehicles, after many years of near misses and minor collisions. Traffic lights may create some inconvenience to vehicle users, however this will be just a matter of seconds, as they will only close when vehicles approach the other side. We are aware DRD’s budget is facing major cuts and we acknowledge this is the best that can be achieved with the finances available.”

“Residents kept saying how dangerous this area is both for pedestrians and vehicle users”

The Group’s ultimate aim is to enable further improvement such as a Drop off/Pick up Point and Park and Ride in this area and will continue to lobby for these, including a footbridge. Elena added: “We are aware that Whitehead’s Park and Ride is oversubscribed and many train users using it come from the Islandmagee and Ballycarry area. If we can persuade Translink to look for Park and Ride opportunities in Ballycarry, that would alleviate the lack of parking at Whitehead and would encourage many more users to use the station, both on foot and by car. On the other hand, improving passenger figures at Ballycarry will help us make the case for improved frequency of services from Ballycarry to Larne, a section of the line which currently has a less frequent service than the rest. We also need to seek alternative sources of funding which may be available such as EU and Lottery funding, as well as private organisations with a keen interest in this area, such as Islandmagee Storage.Given the support received at this meeting, we have received reassurances from Transport NI that the scheme will go ahead. A number of suggested amendments (put forward by residents) are currently being considered for implementation and Transport NI will still continue to carry out consultation with the LLPG and individual affected local residents to ensure that all concerns and issues have been fully considered and addressed. The LLPG has expressed their gratitude to everyone who attended the meeting and to those who did not make it but have provided their support for this campaign.

stronomy is an ancient science that can be traced back to the beginnings of human civilisation long before the dawn of television! Anyone can start their journey of celestial discovery equipped with a simple pair of binoculars or a small telescope. This series aims to give an overview of the night sky each month, designed for beginners and to discuss some of the exciting astronomical events due to occur in 2015. A number of printed sky maps are available online but there are a wide range of astronomy apps now available that can be used to quickly locate the positions of your closest celestial objects from your back garden. Or alternatively for a fun family day out, the Armagh Planetarium is currently hosting a show ‘Beyond the Blue’ which takes the viewer on a tour of the night sky visible to us in the Northern Hemisphere (prices are £6 for adults and £5 for children, family day passes are £20). So firstly, if we are lucky enough to get a rare clear night, where are some of the best places to go stargazing in and around our area, which avoid light pollution? Killylane Reservoir in Larne boasts a sheltered area, with light from surrounding areas being blocked by large conifer trees around the borders. Another

site which has proved popular for amateur astronomers in the area is Carnfunnock Country Park, just off the Coast Road in Larne. Northern Ireland also boasts a registered Dark Sky Discovery Site at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at Oxford Island, which played host to the BBC Stargazing Live events in 2012 and 2013. Venus, known as the ‘morning’ or ‘evening’ star is visible above the south western horizon about 60 minutes after sunset in March. As Venus shows phases much like our moon, it will appear as a thin crescent in a good pair of binoculars and is best viewed in bright twilight conditions in the evening sky. March is named for the planet Mars and the planet is associated with the Roman god of war. Unfortunately it is a difficult planet to view compared to the much brighter Venus. In a good pair of binoculars it will appear as a pale pink disc. It currently sits low on the south western horizon, soon after dark, to the left of Venus, but will not appear as bright. Jupiter is the most easily spotted of the planets this month in the night sky. On March 2nd Jupiter and a three quarter full moon (known as waxing gibbous) moon are set to

align close together to the East, reaching the highest point in the sky together in the late evening. Jupiter appears bright white and is the most visible of the planets, outshining even the brightest stars. On a very clear night its four brightest moons, Ganymede, Europa, Io and Callisto, can be viewed with a pair of good binoculars or a small telescope and will appear as small pinpoints of light. Over a period of a few hours the moons can be seen to move around the planet. A partial solar eclipse of the sun will occur on March 20th, a nice way to start the Spring Equinox on this date. From Belfast the eclipse will begin at 8.26am, peaking at 9.31am, just in time for your morning tea-break. At this time 93% of the Sun’s surface will be covered. The next total solar eclipse visible from Ireland will not be until 2090. Viewing the sun directly, even for a few seconds can cause permanent damage to the eyes, even when the eclipse reaches its peak it should not be viewed directly. Sunglasses do not provide enough protection! Eclipse safety glasses can be purchased online for as little as £5 online. Never view an eclipse directly through a pair of binoculars or a telescope.

The Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society (NIAAS) is based in Ballyclare and meets on the first Monday of every month from September until May. Regular telescope observing sessions are also held, usually at Killylane Reservoir but these are often at very short notice and are entirely weather dependent. Michael Donald & Rebecca Houton

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Odyssey Arena Belfast 3rd MarchNoel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will perform live at the Odyssey Arena Belfast this Tuesday 3rd March. It will be the first performance of the tour promoting his new album Chasing Yesterday which is due to be released the day prior of the gig on Monday 2nd March. The lead single from the album ‘In the Heat of the Moment’ was released on 17th November 2014 and it has already sparked comparisons with some of Noel’s previous work with his former band Oasis. In response to such claims about the record Noel has said, in a typically modest fashion, that “Is it great? Of course it is. What does it mean? It doesn’t mean anything.”The inescapable comparison of Chasing Yesterday with previous albums Noel has recorded such as ‘Definitely Maybe’ and ‘Morning Glory’ is not something that he seems to want to shirk. Rather, he claims that he has never

recorded two successful albums in a row since those two blockbuster records with Oasis, and he firmly believes that Chasing Yesterday will be able to replicate that success. It is the very first album the singer/songwriter has self-produced. So, wherever you stand in terms of his old work from his new, Chasing Yesterday will arguably be more of a representation of himself as an individual artist, and one I am looking forward to listening to this Tuesday evening in the Odyssey Arena Belfast.

Fearne Cotton has announced that she is leaving BBC Radio 1 after 10 years. The presenter and DJ announced her departure on her official website, while also revealing that she and husband Jesse Wood are expecting another baby. “Jesse [Wood] and I are very happy to announce we are having another baby,” said Cotton. “I feel extremely blessed and happy that Rex will be a big brother, and we get to welcome another Wood into the world. “It has also been a time of big decisions, and one I want to share with you now. After much time and careful thought, I have decided to leave Radio 1 after ten amazing years. “I have had the most incredible decade broadcasting on Radio 1, meeting wonderful people, helping break artists and watching live music from the world’s best,” she continued.

“However it is now time for a new chapter. I would like to thank Radio 1

for being such a great home, and most of all, to the listeners

who have been on this journey with me. “It’s such a kick to know you heard a band on my show first, or that the songs I’ve played have helped you through the

day, so thank you. “I will leave with the best

memories and many great friends. Here’s to family and new

adventures.” Reports that Cotton was expecting another baby were sparked following her appearance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday February 25. Clara Amfo will succeed Cotton in the mid-morning Live Lounge slot on Radio 1, the BBC also confirmed on Friday February 27. Amfo, who currently hosts shows for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, will take over the weekday 10am-1pm Radio 1 Live Lounge slot from Monday, May 25. The presenter will continue to present

the Radio 1 official chart show. She will vacate her 1Xtra weekend breakfast slot from Sunday, May 17. Amfo said: “I am honoured and thrilled to be presenting such a huge show on Radio 1. The broadcasters who have gone before me have left an impressive trail and I hope to carry that on. “Doing this job is an absolute joy and to now have the opportunity to broadcast Monday to Friday is something that I am so grateful for,” she added. “I can’t wait to introduce a Live Lounge artist for the first time!” Ace will succeed Amfo as host of the 1Xtra weekend breakfast show, and said: “So excited to be back on the schedule! Can’t wait to get stuck in. I guarantee your weekend lie-in will never be the same again!”

BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show could move from its usual Sunday slot, following changes to music release dates. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced February 26 that all albums and singles will be released at 12.01am on Fridays around

the world from later this year. The Official Charts Company has

stated that it will now “also be looking to move the UK chart announcement day”. “Exact details are to be decided, but Radio 1 will continue to be the home of the Official Chart.”

The majority of new releases come out on Mondays in the UK,

with the chart finalised at midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The changes would mean that a Thursday chart announcement would fairly reflect the week’s best-sellers. A Radio 1 spokesperson said that a decision has yet to be made regarding the chart show’s broadcast date. Clara Amfo currently presents the Radio 1 Official Chart Show, which airs on Sundays from 4pm to 7pm.

MATCH THE STARS TO THEIR EGOSA “Some people are just born stars, you either have it or you haven’t, and I was definitely born one.”

B “I love Angelina Jolie. She’s strong but gorgeous and uses her fame for good to make a big difference in the world… I have a lot in common with her.”

C “A lot of men have told me that it’s only women who have a problem with me being too sexy.”

D “I defy a girl not to fall for me if I’m on a surfboard or snowboarding. It’s my secret weapon if a girl resists me.”

E “I’m just really confident sexually, and

I think that sort of oozes out of my pores. It’s just there. It’s something I don’t have to turn on.”

F “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.”

G “With every song that I write, I com-pare it to the Beatles. The thing is they only got there before me. If I’d been born

at the same time as John Lennon, I’d have been up there.”

H “There are moments when I can’t believe I’m as old as I am. But I feel better physically than I did 10 years ago. I don’t think, Oh God, I’m missing something.”

The A-list and egomaniacs go together like A-Rod and steroids – you can’t have one without the other. Of course, it only makes sense that celebrities develop a high sense of self-worth – perhaps even an overinflated sense of self-worth. After all, they’re not just fawned all over by the public, they’re getting paid millions of dollars for their talents. It’s quite likely any one of us would succumb to egotists if we

were in their shoes. Sure, many celebrities still appear down-to-earth and normal, stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley who are often praised for being humble. There are stars who give off the vibe that they’re exactly like us – except that they have more money than we’ll ever make!

“MODEL DEALER” WINS UK’S FIRST FULL-YEAR VAN PRO STAMP OF

APPROVAL FROM MERCEDES-BENZ Northern Ireland’s official Mercedes-Benz Van Dealer has become the first in Britain to pass a stringent quality audit covering all aspects of its light commercial vehicle sales and after sales operation. Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI), which is based on Mallusk Road, Newtownabbey, was hailed a “model Dealer” by the manufacturer in recognition of its achievement. The Van ProCenter programme is an international initiative by Mercedes-Benz that puts customer care at the very top of the agenda. Just over a year ago, having been pipped at the post by a fellow franchisee, Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI) became only the second UK Dealer to meet all of the scheme’s demanding criteria and earn accreditation as a fully-fledged Van ProCenter – to underline just how tough the process is, most members of the Mercedes-Benz Dealer network are still working towards this goal. Now, 12 months on, Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI) has just claimed top spot by becoming the first Dealer to pass a rigorous audit covering a full year’s operation as a Van ProCenter. Significantly more demanding than the process it went through to secure its accreditation, the new audit effectively confirms that Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI) has delivered on all of its promises. Steve Bridge, Managing Director for Mercedes-Benz Vans in the UK, explained: “Van Pro Dealers have to meet more 50 separate standards of excellence which, taken together, mean their customers are assured of class-leading levels of service, not only when selecting, ordering and taking delivery of their new vehicles, but also once they’re on the road.

“The excellence of our Dealer partner in Northern Ireland is reflected by its achievements over the past year, not only in terms of vehicle sales but also against a range of key performance indicators. MB T&V (NI) is a model Van Dealer.” Mercedes-Benz Van ProCenter Dealers must keep extended opening hours for customer convenience and meet the manufacturer’s strict requirements on everything from sales

staff numbers, their training, qualifications and expertise in specific models and business sectors, to advice on bodybuilding options and the availability of award-winning Sprinter, Vito and Citan demonstration vehicles for test drives at short

notice. They will also demonstrate ‘best-in-

class’ brand and product presentation at their premises where, as well as new models, they should retail a broad range of top-quality used vans and offer customers fair and transparent trade-in deals on their own vehicles. From an after sales perspective, meanwhile, Van ProCenter Dealers must have specially trained service advisors and technicians, and ensure customer mobility by providing replacement vehicles and collection and delivery services. Managing Director Neil McKibbin, who recently led celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the dealership he founded, added: “Our motivated, expert team have passed every test that Mercedes-Benz has put in front of them with flying colours,

and should all be extremely proud of this latest achievement. “We’re committed at Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI) to providing the class-leading acquisition and ownership experience that customers for vehicles bearing the

legendary three-pointed star are entitled to expect.”

atellite technology and the benefits that come with it have been around

us all for many years in both our business and homes environmentsSky TV, live sporting events, shopping, News etc we all have become accustomed and enjoy the services at the touch of a button. In the business sector benefits including faster and secure data systems, information services, business TV, remote monitoring to mention but a few. These days another use for Satellite technology is finding its way into our living rooms and office’s, Satellite Delivered Broadband. Satellite delivered Broadband means your internet service comes into your home or business via a satellite dish and not on a telephone line that is the usual manner in

most cases. A huge advantage of Satellite delivered broadband is for those of us in rural locations and indeed sometimes not so rural that do not have access to a high speed broadband network. Satellite delivered Broadband gives those same people the opportunity to have a service with realistic working speeds that they otherwise would not have. Download speeds of 20kbps and upload speeds of 6kbps are achievable from some of the current operators with data packages starting from 5GB per month to 150GB per With these sort of figures Satellite delivered Broadband could be a solution for many individuals and business in the community especially in the more rural and remote locations.

Skin Friendly Foods

Green tea is a rich source of

antioxidants, plant chemicals that protect the collagen in our skin from damage caused by pollution,

cigarette smoke and UV radiation.

Collagen gives our skin elasticity and

healthy collagen prevents wrinkles from forming. Research shows that regular consumption of Green Tea results in improved skin elasticity. Why not swap a few cups of your usual tea or coffee for green tea every day.

Salmon is packed full of omega-3 fats, the good fats that produce healthy and plump skin cells and it gets its lovely pink colour from a nutrient called Astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from the damage that contributes to aging. Regular salmon consumption has been shown to result in skin that is smoother and firmer with more moisture and fewer wrinkles, what more could you want? To benefit make sure you buy the best quality salmon you can find, ideally organic or wild Alaskan salmon.

Pumpkin SeedsSnacking on a handful of

pumpkin seeds daily might just do wonders for your skin. These little green seeds contain lots of the mineral zinc,

which the body uses to build and repair collagen and therefore prevent wrinkles. Zinc may also prevent spots and support

healing in acne-prone skin.

If you throw away the bones after your

roast dinner on a Sunday you might want to stop right

now. Boiling those bones to make a

stock releases a variety of nutrients that are fantastic for

your skin. As the bones soften and break down they

release natural collagen to support the skin and an amino acid called proline that maintains

younger-looking skin. For best results boil bones for about 5 hours and use the stock as a base for soups and

stew throughout the week.

Chocolate facials are becoming

increasingly popular in

spas and beauty salons and this isn’t a fancy gimmick.

Raw cocoa is one of the most antioxidant- dense

foods in existence and eating a little dark chocolate, one that contains at least

75% cocoa solids, daily has been shown to protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun, potentially preventing wrinkles

in the long run. Raw chocolate, sometimes called cacao, is unprocessed and provides even more health benefits.

You don’t have to visit a cosmetics counter and spend a small fortune

on expensive serums and lotions to enjoy younger looking skin. Next time you’re at the supermarket stock up on

these skin-friendly foods that have natural anti-aging properties. Sarah Trimble Nutritional

I originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured and it came out of its socket. This resulted in my ankle being surgically pinned. The pain really started about 15 years ago and it steadily got worse over time. To the point where it was difficult to work or to go for even a short walk. The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little movement which made it hard to walk over rough ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle but it was very impractical and the pain in my ankle was unbearable when I took it off. David says “The secret of the rocker is that unlike most ankle braces it is designed to facilitate movement not to reduce it. By mimicking the ankles own movement it reduces stress on the ankle foot and lower limb. Our patients often try a sample device during the examination to allow them to really get the feeling of walking properly again. My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox Newsletter and I read an article about a

new shoe insert which had been designed and developed by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic. I phoned and made an appointment to see David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the device. David examined my ankle and said that the restriction in movement was the cause of my pain and that I would benefit from the new rocker device. The rocker has to be custom made so about a week later I had it fitted. With this type of ankle injury you can be in pain every time you stand up. For many of our patients just being able to walk around the local shops can be a real challenge. For some this can be very depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be able to help them walk pain free again. It has been wonderful to be able to do a full days work with no severe pain and not having to limp around at night. I would recommend to anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker a go as I have found it to be of great benefit.

If you have a headache, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten people suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.

New research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

Chiropractic gives relief to many headache sufferers, not only in our practice but also in several studies. One study found that the majority of people who suffered from spinal misalignments had their headaches relieved or their condition improved through chiropractic care. And in follow-up studies of the same patients it was found that many were still without recurring headache pain two years later.

The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in

the neck. Today, people engage in more sedentary activities than they used to, and hours are spent in one fixed position or posture, like sitting in front of the computer for hours. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache. If you are suffering from headaches, please see a chiropractor. Chiropractic has been proven to help headaches, it’s what we do!

Dr Graeme practices in Carrick Chiropractic Clinic. Please feel free to contact the clinic on 02893 366446 for advice or to arrange an appointment.

Peter Singer, one of the most controversial and influential moral philosophers alive today, arrived at the Lanyon Building in Queens University Belfast on Wednesday evening 25th February via Skype to give a talk on his latest work with the charity The Life You Can Save. The utilitarian philosopher, a key animal rights activist, was not shy in endorsing his position as a vegetarian. This provoked me to inquire into his work and do a bit of myth-busting that may help us all to avoid that awkward eyebrow-raising moment at dinner events, when we are told that “so-and-so doesn’t eat meat.” The author of Animal Liberation (1971) defends vegetarianism on the basis that we should give equal consideration to “all beings that have interests.” He attacks the commercial imperative of factory farming that reduces animals to being treated as mere property and contentiously compares this behaviour to the African slave trade.

The movement has made a lot of progress over the years that include sweeping reforms across the entire European Union that require farm animals to have more space and better living conditions. This success can also be seen in the sea-change of opinion towards wearing fur, and in how many of our newspapers today give extensive coverage to stories about the abuse of animals. His work has significantly changed our attitude towards animal equality to the extent that the vegetarian lifestyle is now seen as (dare I say it) normal. Yet Singer’s ultimate aim, to “stop buying meat altogether”, is one that seems unlikely to ever come to fruition. It leaves me to draw two conclusions: that the issue is increasingly less about what is right and wrong, and more to do with how much effort we are willing to give the cause.

One of Northern Irelands fastest growing online bathroom stores, Bathshack, has undergone a surge in popularity since opening in 2009. The family run business operates from bases in Ballymena, Belfast and Cork, and with an ever-ex-panding client base, the firm is surging ahead of the competition. Speaking to the Chatterbox publi-cation, one of the firm’s founders, Pete Dunlop, explains how the company has managed to achieve its impressive growth in difficult market conditions.

The company is quickly climbing to the top of the ladder. How have you managed to cope with the speed of the company’s growth? We have a very clear vision of where we are going and while we are well on our way, we have still bit to go. At times it can be quite stressful, but when you are doing something that you love it makes

things a lot easier. The people I have around me have been the key. I’m really fortunate to have a good team of people working with me who see the bigger picture and go the extra mile to get the job done.

What elements, policies or ap-proaches would you say have been at the heart of the business’s success? For us I think the key is that we have embraced new ways of doing business. When we first started out, trying just to explain to people that we were selling bathrooms online was a struggle. We stuck with the idea and built a website that was easy for customers to use, had a good selection of products, and was informative. This coupled with our showrooms, has been a real recipe for success. We are constantly learning and constant-ly adapting. I think this is the key in any business, if you stand still,

others are going to overtake!

Who is involved in running the company? My wife Aideen and my brother Conor are very heavily involved in the running of the business. Conor looks after the day-to-day running of the warehouse and sales office, while Aideen concentrates more on the website and the showrooms. This allows me to concentrate on driving the business forward.

How many staff work at the firm and although a lot of business is done online, how many outlets are there? At present we have a staff of 14. This year we plan to employ four more full-time sales people in the south of Ireland and an additional four full-time staff across the busi-ness in the north. We currently have a showroom in Ballymena, Belfast and Bandon, Co Cork. Our head office and warehouse is in Belfast.

What is the future of the firm, are there any innovations in the pipe-line?We are in the early stages of firing out a new showroom in Cork City, which we plan to have open by April. Our next venture will be a flagship showroom in Dublin city. We will also be launching a new website within the next couple of months. This is something we have been working on for some time and

is quite a bit more advanced than our current site. It will link our stock control and accounting packag-es, which allows us to continue to growth. We also have plans to link the web-site to a CAD system, which allows customers to input the layout of their room and dimensions. We will then offer a photo-realistic design of their room designed with Bath-shack Products.

2009 was a difficult year to start up a firm, being at the start of a recession - how fif you overcome that? From our point of view, the reces-sion probably helped us. Because of the recession, people were looking for ways to save money and we targeted this market. We concentrated our buying on certain products in order to offer the best possible prices to the customer. We are still doing the same today but our range os now huge.

What is your outlook for the NI economy over the next few years, do you predict a strong recovery?I think on the whole it looks good. We are seeing more first time house buyers, which means banks are lending again. I think as long as we continue to offer a good qual-ity product at a competitive price, we can only benefit in a growing economy.

Recent news reports have shown that the market for commercial properties in N Ireland is growing dramatically, with performance in 2014 representing a 186% increase on the previous year.

This is a trend very much apparent at 9yards where we are increasingly being asked to undertake design and consultancy work for the commercial sector, a part of the economy that had somewhat ‘bottomed out’ during the recession – helped in no way by the NI Rates system applying rates to vacant premises making them a relatively unattractive investment proposition.

The tide, however, appears to be turning with more and more vacant business premises being let and new shops, offices and restaurants opening with refreshing regularity.

In the last 6 months at 9yards alone we have worked on 8 offices, 3 restaurants a chip shop and an automated pharmacy, all in addition to our regular residential work. These commercial projects include the recently opened ‘Mayur’ Indian restaurant & ‘The Keep’ Grill in Carrickfergus, Abbey Insurance’s latest prestigious office at Boucher Road and the state-of-the-art pharmaceutical robot in McKenzies Chemists in Belfast – an operation like something out of a sci-fi move which simply has to be seen to be believed!

So what issues face our local entrepreneurs when they are considering opening up in a new business premises? The importance of finding the right

building in the right location is obvious but this is only the beginning. Negotiating rent and budgeting for commercial rates will be central to cashflow projections and the Business Plan. Terms of the lease will also be important – many commercial leases are on a ‘full insuring and repairing’ basis meaning that the tenant will be responsible for the maintenance of the landlord’s building.

Lease length can be a two-edged sword: a short lease (say of 2 years) can limit your liabilities if your business grows faster than planned and you need to move to bigger premises (or slower than planned and you need to downsize); yet the same short-term lease can see you spending considerable sums on shopfitting and equipment only to be ousted at the lease end or endure a hike in rent.

These issues should be fully discussed with your solicitor and your business advisor but once these details are settled there is a further raft of legislation that you may have to deal with: Planning, Building Control and Fire Safety apply almost universally but your proposals may also require Liquor Licensing (restaurants, etc), advertisement consent (signage), Conservation Area consent, etc depending on your proposed use and the amount of refurbishment, shopfitting, etc envisaged.

We shall look at these issues in more detail in next month’s column but if you need to discuss any of these matters with more urgency simply call us at 9yards – 02893 365 999.

IT’S A DIRTY JOB BUT SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT Spring clean your patio: it’s a Dirty Job. Or Is It?Cleaning paving and patios is often thought of as a tough job and therefore tends to get pushed to the bottom of the garden to-do list. But cleaning the hard landscaping in your garden doesn’t need to be such a chore if you time it correctly and pick the best tools and products for the job. Why Do I Need to Clean My Paving and Patios? It seems obvious but regular cleaning of your paving and patios is essential to maintaining their condition and ensuring they last as long as possible. Moisture and bacteria can cause moss and algae build ups which, while making your garden look tired and unkempt, can also make surfaces very slippery. Cleaning off the moss before it gets out of hand can help to prevent accidents. This also applies to decking surfaces. Also, if left to their own devises, weeds can find their way in between the paving slabs and in areas you wouldn’t think were possible for them to grow. A regular clean will keep these at bay. When Should I Clean My Paving? The longer you leave dirt and grime on paving, the harder it is to remove it. And like most gardening or outdoor jobs, regular maintenance is key.You should ideally clean your garden patios and paving slabs on a dry day. This is so you can ensure that the cleaner or any chemicals you are using has time to fully take effect. But

this doesn’t mean you put off the job in the winter as this is when your paving and patios are going to get really dirty. Three or four times a year is normally enough. What Tools Do I Need? This kind of depends on the problem you are facing and how much the paving has previously been maintained. If your patio is in fairly good condition and its part of a regular maintenance routine, a bucket of warm soapy water or patio cleaner that prevents and kills mould, and a stiff broom is probably enough. If there is a little more work to be done, then a sharp tool or scrubbing brush will help to remove any weeds, moss and debris and a broom will sweep them away nicely. Most patio and paving cleaners will continue to work in the days after the product is washed away with a watering can or low pressure garden hose. This is a method that many have adopted as a quick way of cleaning paving and patios, but should be used with extreme caution. Pressure washers work by blasting the surface

with water and aggravating the dirt that lies on the paving to remove it. They can be very effective and when used correctly can keep your paving looking as good as new. Some models of pressure washer have an attachment where you can add detergents. However, many paving and stone manufacturers will not honour a guarantee

if a pressure washer has been used to clean the patio as they can cause serious damage to the surface of the stone or concrete material. What is the Best Way to Clean My Paving and Patio?Preparation is key whichever method you choose to clean

your patio. Ensure that the surface is clear of any debris, this includes loose dirt, dust and weeds. Remove weeds with a brush or kill them with a weedkiller. You can use a weed killing product that attacks the whole plant but you should wait the allocated time for the weeds to die off before cleaning and then sweeping the paving.

The Soapy Water Method

soapy water – You can use almost any soap based cleaning product, just check for any corrosive warnings on the bottle

paving – Start with a small section at the furthest end of your patio

using a circular motion - The amount of elbow grease required will depend on the condition of the paving

can, garden hose or bucket of clean water, wash away the soap suds and dirt, taking care not to let it run into your flower bed

The Patio Cleaning Product MethodThis is a general guide and you should always follow the instructions on the product carefully.

product with water as per the instructions

cleaners can be applied using a watering can, low pressure sprayer or just a simple bucket

reach areas

cleaning products tend to carry on working gradually over time, with you seeing the effect two – four days after applicationDo you have an alternative tried and tested way of cleaning your paving and patios that you would like to share? We’d love to hear about it.

A beautiful summer garden needs a choice of comfortable sitting areas in the most scenic spots for you to relax, soak up the sun, enjoy al fresco dining and ¬entertain friends at different times of the day.A timber deck, which can be accessed directly from the house by patio doors, is especially useful for extending the living space outdoors and also gives the illusion of a larger home... but without shelling out a massive amount of money.Good idea: While planning, note that deck boards are best placed at right angles to your house so that they will draw the eye into the garden beyond. If the garden is narrow, though, you might prefer to lay them parallel to the wall to give it a feeling of width.Considerations:Before selecting your decking, there are some points you should take into consideration:Site:Is the site flat, sloping or difficult

terrain – can changes of level be built-in to add interest?Position:Is the deck shaded, in the sun, or will it combine elements of both? Do you wish to include features to add shade or screening from the wind?Privacy:Is the deck intended to be a private space or on public view? Will trees, shrubs, boundaries and buildings provide privacy?Services:Will the deck’s location interfere with drains and manholes? The design can incorporated the need to access such services.Usage:Is the deck primarily for adults or for family use? A children’s play area, featuring swing / sandpit can be included.Features:Many features can be incorporated into deck design – planter boxes, seats, trellis, arbours, pergolas, storage boxes - almost anything is

possible.Styling:What style of handrail and balustrades will need to be built in?Deck Boards:What type of board will be used for the surface of the deck? There is a wide range available providing variations in grain pattern and colour. There is also a choice of board to enable different effects to be created.Planning:Is planning or building regulation approval required? Not usually, however if you deck is above 600mm high different regulations apply and we would recommend you check with your local authority before starting the project. For more information see our “Timber Decking Regulations” Guide which outlines advice given by the Timber Decking Association, Building regulations and British Standards.

Our 10 year old Daughter’s mind used to be in chaos. Homework especially proved to be a real challenge. Whenever Sophie came up against something that she didn’t understand she would have a severe frustration tantrum. The homework would have to be cancelled altogether and the whole family was affected for the rest of the evening. In the mornings, if her Dad asked her to do a couple of things she would fly off the handle, cover her head with her hands and say “I can’t do all of that, stop talking!” Apart from all of this going on she found it impossible to read, spell, was very disorganised, had no concept of time or the need to hurry up. Her writing was painfully slow, with no spaces, letters all different sizes and words moved about on the page. She was very easily distracted, tired all the time, she found it hard to get to sleep which added to the tiredness and in speech, she knew what she wanted to say but just couldn’t get the words out. All in all she was very unhappy and constantly feeling frustrated. Our Daughter has been doing the Learning Breakthrough Programme for 6 months now. It involves standing on a balance board, once a day for 15 minutes and doing exercises that co-ordinate Sophie’s body, strengthen her eye tracking and focus and literally re-organises her brain! We have noticed magnificent differences in just

6 months; the chaos has gone so she feels calmer overall. In her words, she can now think straight! Recently she asked her friends to have a reading out loud competition – she felt confident enough to try. Her friends all agreed that her reading was the best! The most significant change is that she is in control of her emotions. Even though she still gets frustrated at times, she is able to go away to her room, sort it out in her head, calm herself down and come back and do the task she was asked to do without any fuss. In addition she is willing to take on more school work, she no longer gets lost in her speech, she has quickened up in her writing, getting dressed, doing her homework and is generally processing information at a normal speed. Her reading is fluent and she has mastered her times tables. (She used to need time to work them out on her fingers). We are more than pleased with her progress and we are very happy that we took on the programme.Proud and relieved parents – Mark and Emma

Carrickfergus Amphitheatre

saw the first anniversary of

Carrickfergus "parkrun" on Saturday 31st January 2015. The parkrun

event celebrated

its birthday in style with

a turnout of 76 people – many in

‘onesie’ fancy dress. Runners included 8 "under 14's", and 2 "over 60's" running and finish times ranging from 18 minutes to 37 minutes Since Carrickfergus parkrun started a year ago 922 different runners have taken part completing 4129 runs covering 20,645km. Event director Vivien Davidson said she was ‘over the moon’ with the event’s success, which she attributed to it

being ‘community driven’ and ‘very sociable’. Parkrun is a fantastic initiative that caters for all levels and its ‘quite unique’ in not focusing on athletics club memberships but recreational runners of all abilities. Paul Mawhinney Sports Development Officer for Carrickfergus Borough Council stated: Parkrun is a free, timed, 5k run and takes place in local parks all over the UK every Saturday morning. Parkrun can be part of everyone’s weekly exercise regime helping people get more active more often and it’s free.“Our parkrun is heavily reliant on volunteers each week. We have been extremely lucky to have had a fantastic community-led volunteer base whose dedication and passion have been the key to the success of the Carrickfergus parkrun. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers over the last 12 months for their

time and hard work. Parkrun is free to enter, and participants simply register online through the official website www.parkrun.org.uk For further details on the Carrickfergus parkrun, please visit http://www.parkrun.org.uk/carrickfergus/ this will provide full information including details of the course, event time, public

Issue 8 - March 2015

Many clients have asked us for clarification on the new Stamp Duty tariffs introduced in December. We are not surprised as the new system is quite different from the previous one. If you have not come across it yet, we hope to explain it to you here. No doubt, you will be aware that the previous system dictated that purchasers would pay a fixed rate on the full property price. This was quite a simple calculation in that you would firstly determine which percentage rate applied to the total purchase price and then simply make that percentage calculation to give the amount payable. However, this was recently replaced by a new system whereby you must take the final price and work through each band, paying the rate of duty for the proportion of the price which falls within each band. This requires a few percentage calculations and then addition sums to arrive at the total due.

Here are the new tariffs:

Amount Rate

£0-£125,000 0%

£125,001-£250,000 2%

£250,000-£925,000 5%

£925,000-£1,500,000 10%

Over £1,500,000 12%

Example of duty due on a house purchased for £150,000

Old system – you would have paid 1% of the total purchase price in other words £1500.

New system – you pay the rate on the amount within each band according to the table above, in other words 0% on the first £125,000 and 2% on the remaining £25,000 giving a total amount due of £500, a £1000 saving. For most transactions in Northern Ireland there will be savings to be made under the new system, with a few small exceptions, and we hope that this will assist many of you in the process of purchasing a new home.

NEW STAMP DUTY RULESWHEN BUYING A HOUSE

We met with 12 year old Ciaran

Dixon a local Cyclist from Carrickfergus who is fast becoming a name to

be watched in the world

of youth club cycling.

Ciaran has been cycling for 2 ½ years and began his career by representing the David McCaw foundation who set upa youth academy early 2014. Ciaran has now been selected to represent the Ulster cycling squad for the Junior under 14’s. This is a great achievement for such a competitive sport at this age. Ciaran has also put himself in good stead by cycling for the well know Phoenix Cycling Club / Belfast who have a reputation and background for supporting youths at

the start of their cycling careers. In 2014 Ciarans glowing victories have seen him achieve a gold medal in the scratch race, gold in the 10m time trial and a silver in the sprint in his age category, as well as respectable 3rd place in the Ulster League. David Humphries a local cyclist and business owner (Lifecycles.bike) knows all too well the pressures cycling can have on families financially. He has been watching Ciaran for quite some time now and has seen massive potential in the youth. He has decided to lend support by sponsoring Ciarans dreams of becoming a professional cyclist. David mentioned “The cost of cycling is fairly expensive” which is why Lifecycles.bike have decided to help fund Ciarans career through mechanical support and supplies. Ciaran has great passion and determination in making his dreams become a reality. He has already at the age of 12 gained experience in road,

track and cycle cross races. With a great support network through family and sponsorships like Lifecycles.bike the potential for being selected for Ireland may now be in his grasp.

We at Chatterbox wish Ciaran all the best in the future and look forward to seeing the young star in the making shine in the not too distant future.

FEARLESS FRAMPTON ON TOP OF THE WORLDCarl Frampton showed the world of boxing that he’s one of the best with an impressive fifth-round stoppage of Chris Avalos. Not bad for a boy “from the ghetto”! Pre-fight, the brash American and his camp were playing up their chances as he said he would “whoop Frampton’s ass”. But from the onset of the fight, Avalos looked a step slower than the world champion as Frampton landed over and over again with his left jab and right cross. Frampton dominated throughout the fight and the referee was forced to step in midway through the fifth following a flurry of shots. If he hadn’t, Avalos may have left the Odyssey Arena on a stretcher. The crowd were magnificent throughout with the Odyssey sounding like Neil Diamond himself might walk

on and play “Sweet Caroline” before the fight. And when Frampton got the decision, the 9,000-strong partisan crowd erupted. The boy from Tigers Bay really has

established himself on the global scene with well-respected boxing site BoxRec ranking him as the 19th best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. More importantly, they see him as

the top-ranked super bantamweight, ahead of all the names Barry McGuigan mentioned post-fight. McGuigan said he would prove that in the next couple of years and whether it’s, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Leo Santa Cruz or Scott Quigg, Frampton will get his shot at affirming his legacy as one of Northern Ireland’s sporting greats. His next fight looks set to be a summer showdown with Quigg and whether that’s in Belfast, Manchester or elsewhere, I’m sure The Jackal’s fans will have the place bouncing again. Quigg joined Frampton for an interview after the fight and seemed very keen on taking on the Belfast man. For now, Frampton gets a bit of a break. And he deserves it. He’s shown again that years of hard work

and sacrifice pay off. He’s a credit to this place and deserves everything he’s getting.

! !Part of Dignity plc. A British Company.

Pre-Arrangement Plan Voucher

McConnell’s Funeral Directors are holding an open day for local people interested inlearning about the benefits of the Dignity Funeral Plan. The open day will be held onTuesday 24th March from 8:30am to 4:30pm and the friendly and approachable staff will be available to answer any questions that people may have.

Sandra Whiteside said: “More and more people are pre-arranging their funerals thesedays. People often purchase a funeral plan to make sure their loved ones don’t have tomake difficult decisions about their funeral arrangements. Other people purchase aDignity Funeral Plan from us so that they know that their funeral is paid for at today’sprices, regardless of how far in the future the service takes place. This means that inthese times of financial uncertainty, their loved ones are saved from paying for thefuneral.”

Sandra continued: “We are inviting people who are interested in finding out more aboutfuneral plans to come to McConnell’s Funeral Directors where my colleague, JimShields, and I will be available to answer questions on funeral plans or any other aspectof arranging a funeral.”

People attending the funeral plan open day will receive a discount voucher entitling themto £100 off the Dignity Funeral Plan, making it even more affordable to plan for thefuture.

McConnell’s Funeral Directors have been arranging and conducting funerals for over 30 years. They provide a 24-hour service and are part of Dignity, a British company that has funeral directors in towns and cities all across the UK.

THE £5 BILLION GAMEBy Stephen ClementsWelcome to my first outing on Chatterbox! Although my job is (arguably talking rubbish in between great songs) largely within the music industry, I’ve always been a massive fan of sport and in particular, football. As a Man Utd fan, I’m old enough to remember back pre Fergie, so am less shocked at our current predicament than some of the younger fans. What HAS shocked me though was the recent announcement regarding the Premier League tv rights deal. The total amount it has cost, both Sky and BT Sport, is £5.136 billion. Over the course of the 3 year deal, that equates to just over £10 million per game. That’s PER GAME.

Has football finally lost the plot? Is there an argument that football is no longer a “sport” in its rawest form? Certainly Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore made no apologies for the money in the top level of the game. “We are in the entertainment industry, and just like in, for example, the movie industry, the top talent get paid disproportionally to the rest of the workers” Perhaps. Some players though are earning £1/2

million per week. The “people’s sport” is already run by and played by the elite. The tv money was always sold to the public as a way of bringing the best players to the premier league and that it would filter through to the grass roots of the game.

From what I can see the grass roots football hasn’t seen any massive investment and with many clubs on the brink, it would seem that as every season goes by, we move one step closer to a super league of “haves” vs the rest of the “have nots”. Ultimately though, it will be the fans that will pay. Be it via the anticipated increase in the cost of receiving Sky Sports and/or BT Sports, the shirts, the merchandise, or tickets for a game. Arguments for and against what players make is as futile as is unnecessary ESPECIALLY if you are in some way funding it through your support. And ultimately this is the bitterest of all pills to swallow because as any true fan knows, you can’t not follow your team. So will the super-rich clubs in football be able to sustain themselves, the answer is very probably. Can the rest, only time will tell. Has the “sport” of football as we once knew it gone forever….two sets of lads, pulling on a shirt with pride….guts & glory for the club and fans……to

be replaced by two squads of millionaire “entertainers” playing with a lot of skill but no passion? Some would say it has already happened. To make a stand against these incredible sums of money being handed out to fellas who sometimes seem more interested in fake tans, super models, fast cars and hair plugs, I for one, am taking a stand and cancelling my Sky Sports contract, will not be buying my son his first Man Utd shirt, and

will never go to Old Trafford again. Except we all know that none of us will do this, because ultimately it is our love for our teams and our sport that makes “The £5 billion game” possible.Stephen hosts the Citybeat Breakfast-show, Monday to Friday 6am-10amTwitter: @radiostephenFacebook: www.facebook.com/radiostephen

Linfield Football Club is pleased to announce that our 2002 (Under 13’s), 2003 (Under 12) and 2004 (Under 11) Academy squads are travelling to Disneyland Paris to participate in the International Youth Festival of Football.

The trip will take place from 8th to 12th April 2015 and is an outstanding development opportunity for our young players. This will be the 6th year of this unique football festival which has involved teams from France, Brazil, Turkey, England,

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It has evolved into one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in Europe and Linfield FC is delighted to be part of it. A mammoth fundraising effort has taken place to finance this exciting venture and we are indebted to the

young players and their families for their commitment to

date. Opportunities exist for local businesses to support our participation through sponsorship of one of the participating teams.

Irvine Woods, Linfield Academy Chairman

stated: “This is a fantastic

opportunity for our young players and will be another exciting stage in their development. They will be competing against quality sides from the UK, Europe and South America and I am sure that they will benefit greatly from the experience, both on and off the field. “

“Any local businesses who wish to take up the opportunity to be associated with this unique venture are asked to contact the club for further information.”

Forthcoming matchesWith the season entering its latter stages, it is an important time for Comrades as they try to move clear of the Championship 1 relegation fight. Saturday 7th March (away v Armagh City) – Comrades travel to Armagh for what is a six-pointer in the bottom half of the table. Comrades won the game at Dixon Park 4-0 in November, with one of their best displays of the season so far, but they can expect a much harder match on the artificial surface at Holm Park. Saturday 14th March (home v H&W Welders) – Comrades welcome the high-flying Welders to Dixon Park. In the away match at Tillysburn Park earlier in the season, Comrades came back from 3-1 down to level the scores, only to lose 4-3. This promises to be a very testing fixture for Eddie Hill’s men against a side in the hunt for the Championship 1 title. Saturday 21st March (away v Bangor) – A visit to the Bangor Fuels Arena to face the title and promotion chasing Seasiders will be a tough assignment for Comrades. They ran their opponents close in a 2-1 defeat at Dixon Park earlier in the season, but will be hoping for better this time out. Saturday 28th March (away v Dundela) – Comrades travel to Wilgar Park, to meet struggling Dundela, hoping for a repeat of the 3-1 victory they had in the game at Dixon Park between the two sides early in the season. However, they will face a tough task against another side fighting for their Championship 1 survival. Saturday 4th April (home v Carrick Rangers) – The visit of Carrick Rangers will see Comrades try to upset the odds against opponents who are likely to be in the thick of the title and promotion battle. In the fixture at Carrick earlier in the season Comrades lost 2-0, but will no doubt be buzzing to show what they can do in this derby match.

Match highlightsFollowers of Ballyclare Comrades and others may have noticed in recent months that highlights have been produced for a number of games. These have been put together by Graeme Bolton and are a great resource for not only those who can’t attend games, but for those who have been at the match and want to find out what really happened in those controversial moments; Graeme’s slow-motion replays are great for this. To see the action, just go to BallyclareComradesTV on YouTube.
