CSE Diary for 26.12.2012
The benchmark index stayed in the green to reach the highest
level since 14th Nov 2012 despite weak turnover haunting the
bourse. Turnover, today marginally improved to LKR242mn
compared with the 5 month low experienced on Monday as the
an onboard deal in John Keells Holdings boosted turnover
contributing 49% of the days turnover. Investor interest in the blue-
chip counters led by Ceylon Tobacco, Dialog, Ceylon Guardian
and Bukit Darah allowed the index to reach a 2 week high gain of46 points.
Except in a bull market, the festive season records a sharp dip in
turnover as investor attention switches direction. However, buying
interest in selected counters seem to be continuing as the ASPI
charting an upward trend reaching a 1month high today.
Foreigners are the leading buyers even in this dull market with
todays foreign activity contributing as high as 44% of the turnover
with a net foreign inflow of LKR119mn.John Keells Holdings gathered investor attention today as an on-
board parcel of 550k shares of the counter was dealt at LKR218.0.
Further buying interest pushed the days volume in the counter to
693k shares as the counter to close with a gain of 0.5% at LKR218.0.Commercial Bankand the palm oil giant, Bukit Darah too recorded
on-board deals bringing the counters to the top turnover list. Two
deals of 172k and 78k shares of the former counter were traded at
LKR103.0 the latter saw a 15k block trade at LKR690.0.Speculative play was evident in PC House and Free Lanka Capital
Holdings. The former registered an onboard block of 995k shares at
LKR5.3 and closed at the same price while the latter recorded a
number of on-board deals, the counter closed among the gainers
at LKR2.4 (4.4%).Buying interest continued to remain strong in Distilleries, the hard
liquor manufacturer, as the counter reached a 52-week high price
of LKR166.0 though on low volume. The counter closed with a gain
of 1.8% at LKR165.9.European Stocks Decline Amid U.S. Budget Concern: European
stocks retreated for a second straight day as volume tumbled
before the Christmas holiday and concern grew U.S. policy makers
wont meet a year- end budget deadline. The Stoxx Europe 600Index fell 0.1% to 280.6 at 1:40 p.m. London time following a

Britain feels strain as austerity bites: Millions of Britons are facing a bleak holiday season worried aboutfalling incomes and how to repay debt, as economic reports raise questions about whether the country's
austerity measures can restore growth. A survey released Monday showed 43% of households expect their
finances to deteriorate in 2013, compared with only 24% who expect an improvement. "The vast majority ofhouseholds anticipate that their financial well-being will either worsen or stagnate next year," said Tim
Moore, senior economist at financial data provider Markit, which compiled the report. "With three-quarters
of all households not expecting any improvement in their finances, the latest survey suggests that domestic
consumer demand will remain under pressure in the near term -- especially since inflation perceptions remain
elevated and job insecurities are prevalent across the U.K."

Singapore November Industrial Output Recovers on Pharmaceuticals: Singapores industrial productionrose for the first time in four months in November as manufacturers produced more pharmaceuticals,
countering a slump in electronics. Manufacturing gained 3.1% from a year earlier after a revised 5.1% drop in
October, the Economic Development Board said in a report today. The median of 13 economists surveyed byBloomberg News was for a 4.8% increase. Data from the US and China have shown signs of recovery in the
worlds largest economies, which may boost demand for Singapores goods. The Southeast Asian nation this
month concluded negotiations on a free-trade agreement with the European Union, deepening access to
overseas markets. Demand from the U.S., China and Europe will improve, but at the earliest in the second
half of 2013, Michael Wan, a Singapore-based analyst at Credit Suisse Group AG, said before the report.
There are still many structural issues to be resolved, for instance, the fiscal cliff in the U.S., he said,
referring to a blend of tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 if lawmakers dont forge a
budget deal.

Russian sovereign wealth fund, SBI plan USD2 bn investment: Russian sovereign wealth fund RDIF and StateBank of India plan to set up a $ 2 billion investment consortium aimed at promoting mutual investmentsbetween the two countries. The USD10 bn-Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) is Russias sovereign
wealth fund. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up the consortium would be signed later
today between RDIF and SBI, as part of Russian President Vladimir Putins official visit to India. RDIF and
State Bank of India would each invest up to USD1 bn in the proposed co-investment consortium,RDIF Chief
Executive Officer Kirill Dmitriev told PTI. The consortium can make investments in India and Russia. Basically
we are creating this platform that has capital allocated for high return projects in interesting sectors, with
synergy between India and Russia,Dmitriev said. Once the agreement is in place, RDIF and SBI would team
up to facilitate access to long-term capital in Russia and India besides promoting mutual investments. The
emphasis would be on projects geared towards higher purchasing power of the population, creation of value
addition in the extraction and processing of natural resources as well as development of manufacturingbusinesses and service sector companies.
