FOREWORDTowards the end of last year I bought a new house. A fabulous property with great potential– if you looked past the cobwebs, 70’s décor and general lack of care and upkeep, I also hadto turn a blind eye to the beautiful listed annex which the previous owners had paintedorange! Yes orange?
After months of builders, painters, plasterers, plumbers and me swapping and changing mymind on interiors, I’m delighted to say that my house is now my gorgeous home and for thisI must thank many of the fabulous advertisers found between the pages of this magazine –you provided all the inspiration I needed across the two very different characters of theproperty… ideally I should invite you to the house warming party? Now as the warmermonths are here, and the internal project is finished, my attention turns to the grounds – Ifeel l need to win back my stamina though to tackle that, but my recent trips to Jersey andItaly have provided me with some lovely ideas for themed areas… umm for another issue…
This month you’ll find an abundance of inspiration for your home and with the good weatheron your side (fingers crossed) it’s the perfect time to undertake a build project, renovation ormake over?
I must mention the new Rolls Royce Dawn which is advertised in this issue. I was delightedto be invited by the dealership in Birmingham to attend their launch event – what a car.Despite the beautiful setting in the heart of London and well-heeled guests, the cardefinitely was the star attraction.
Enjoy reading this issue whilst I start packing 260 VIP goody bags for our sell-out Ladies Dayat the Polo… I’ll need a stiff drink at the end of it, but not sure how I’ll hold that glass whilstmy fingers are crossed for that fine weather…

Fire up yourIMAGINATIONSYes, it’s that time of year again that we designers all lookforward to – the launch of the new spring collections offabrics and papers.
Acouple of weeks ago off we all trotted toLondon Design Week, to be regaled withmany and varied offerings of the weird and
wonderful (well, wonderful mostly) from theshowrooms in and around the Chelsea HarbourDesign Centre.I’ll be happily bombarding you with all my
favourites over the next fewmonths, but this monthI’d like to talk about the new collections fromOsborne & Little, and their stable mate Lorca.Interestingly enough, they are one of the fewmajordesign houses not to have caved in to the pressure toopen a showroom within the ever expanding DesignCentre. Both they and Designers Guild have stuckresolutely to their lovely showrooms on the KingsRoad.So what delights have they come up with this
season? Well, there are a whopping great 10 newcollections on offer, several of which tickle my
particular fancy a treat! I absolutely love all thingsArt Deco, and its related themes.The flagship collection, comprising two books –
one fabric and one paper - is entitled Fantasque, andconsists of a collection of abstract and geometriccurtain fabrics, which pay tribute to the artistic andcultural movements of the early 20th century,teamed up with rich and stunning papersincorporating metallic tones of bronze, silver, antiquegold, copper and gilver, presented alongsideterracotta, turquoise, yellow, ultramarine, sapphireand steel blue.Apparently, La Boutique Fantasque (also known as
the Magic Toyshop) was the name of a balletconceived by Massine in 1919 for the Ballets Russes,to piano music by Rossini. As I said, the colours arestunning enough, but the designs... oh mygoodness! My out and out favourite is a show-stopper which is actually called Fantasque. Availableas a cotton print and the most fabulous metallic

toned paper, a sleek panther stalks amongst extravagant Art Decofoliage. This is closely followed by another cotton print andmetallicpaper combination entitled Chrysler. Here, stylised Art Deco leavesare reminiscent of the spire on the Chrysler Building, a magnificentfeature of the New York skyline since 1930.Mind you, the Fantasque collection doesn’t limit itself to Art Deco.
There’s a striking design called Cubiste, which is also available in bothfabric and paper, in which rectangular blocks of varying size andcolour are painted on the diagonal, in hommage to the Avant Gardeart movement led by Picasso and Braque. Amongst other splendidfabrics and papers, there’s a truly lovely paper called Lempicka, inwhich broken circles depicted in fine lines form a broad stripe.Under the heading “Not a lot of people know that”, Tamara de
Lempicka, the Polish painter influenced by Cubism, was the firstfemale artist to become a glamour star. She found her fame bypainting portraits of the somewhat ordinary housewives of the richindustrialists of the day, in which she transformed them into sexgoddesses. I love her work, and have a large painting of hers on myliving room wall. Of course it’s only a print, but I was lucky enough tosee the original when the Royal Academy of Arts held an exhibition
of her works in 2004. But I digress... Three of the other new offeringsfrom Osborne & Little team up so well with the Fantasque collection(no surprise there of course), that I’d like to bracket them together foryou. Garnier, named after Charles Garnier, the architect of the opulentmid-19th century Paris Opera, is a collection of épinglé, chenille andvelvet with an architectural theme, Hespera Velvets, a collection ofseven versatile velvets, mostly taking their names from nymphs inAncient Greek mythology, and Costiera, a collection of sheers andfloating curtain fabrics with names taken from the spectacularAmalfi coast south of Naples (known in Italian as La CostieraAmalfitana). All offer the compulsory neutral shades we’ve been soused to in recent years, augmented by rich and beautiful blues,greens and reds. The design that leaps out at me is Astoria, from theHespera Velvets collection, a dramatic printed chevron alluding to thelandmark Waldorf Astoria hotel of the early 1930s. I suppose it wouldreally, as not only is it an Art Deco design, but a few years ago I wasfortunate enough to realise a life’s ambition and stay in that veryhotel (my lovely wife treated me!).The last new release in Osborne & Little’s arsenal I’d like to
mention is a delightful collection of weaves called Ragtime. The
latest in their line of collaborations with well-known designers,Osborne & Little have teamed up with Margo Selby, a woven textiledesigner who produces exceptional quality fabrics, rugs andaccessories, which blend effortlessly with both contemporary andclassic interiors. The collection pays tribute to the greats of ragtimeand jazz with a palette which includes distinctive colourcombinations: grape and chartreuse with duck egg, indigo with burntorange and teal, mandarin with coral and ice.Before I finish (which will need to be soon, as the Editor gets ratty
with me if I go on too long), I must just mention the new season’sreleases from Lorca. Aradonis is a typically Lorcan offeringcomprising a collection of sumptuous fabrics which take theirinspiration from the decoration and architecture of the EasternMediterranean. Signature colours from the distinctive Lorca palettesuch as fuchsia, lavender, orange and turquoise are blended withapple, hyacinth, saffron, linen, taupe and black. There is also a lovelybook of upholstery co-ordinates called Aradonis Weaves. The designsin Aradonis are all good, but the use of silver thread in the jacquardfloral trail of Natalia is an inspiration, andmakes it an absolutestunner!

First ImpressionsThis is a truly stunning looking car; thefront end echoes Audi’s new design style,with a dominating angular front grille, airintakes split by claw-like dividers andtrademark Audi all LED headlights.The R8’s side blades are still present, but
are enhanced as they are now split in twoby raising the shoulder line. The rear, in myopinion, is the best view, appearing slightlylower and wider than the predecessor withtrapezoid shaped exhausts instead of theold oval pipes. You can spot the V10 Plusmodel by the ceramic brakes, fixed spoilerand carbon side blades.
Climb InsideWhat’s not too like? The interior just iswhat you would expect from Audi, clean,modern and crisp with the main featurebeing that stunning all-digital ‘virtualcockpit’ which allows you to flick effortlesslybetween your driving settings, nav, media,phone and radio, which once you are usedto becomes second nature.We also loved the flat bottomed steering
wheel with the huge red START and sportsexhaust buttons that comes with the V10Plus. The seating position adds to the drive,you sit low in bucket seats which arestandard in the V10 model, cocooned by thecentre console which wraps around you.
AndWe’re OffI will be perfectly blunt with you. This is aterrific car. 0-62mph is brutally dealt within just 3.2 seconds, top speed is 205mphand while the Lamborghini Huracanhas left some feeling a touch cold with itsnumb handling, the R8 is better. Milesbetter. Push the red starter button on thesteering wheel and that V10 sounds almost
antisocial – I liked that, with a wide arrayof exotic sounds reverberating from theexhausts. Close to the dealership I foundthe R8 around town was no more difficultto deal with than a TT, with visibilityparticularly pleasing.Out of town and we get to business –
superfast acceleration all the way to 8,500rpm, with that screaming V10 behind us. Broadsword Security Services was founded in 1985 byJohn Granville. Initially providing property securitywith night watchmen and security patrols at random
times of day or night. One customer in those early days wasthe Bliss Tweed Mill in Chipping Norton who required securityduring the renovation of the buildings into apartments asbuilding materials and artefacts were being stolen.
John Granville was soon looking for another way to protectproperty. Night watchmen and random security patrols wereonly effective when physically on site and labour intensive,so electronic security systems was the way forward, they’reready to detect an intruder when the property is vacant andif it’s in the middle of nowhere, the intruder alarm system, iftriggered, would in those days play a recorded message overa telephone line to the local Police Station for them torespond and attend.
Technology has changed andimproved massively since thoseearly days and in some respectsequipment has become bettervalue for money. There arehowever increasingly moremanufacturers producing new technologies but alsocompeting with one another on cost therefore quality,reliability and conformance can sometimes suffer.
