One of the most common causes of complaint we hear about at the gym is backpain - it can be extremely debilitating, causing chronic tiredness, depression andirritability. Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves andjoints, which can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. In mostcases it is not serious damage but small muscle strains, sprains or pinched nerves –even so, these can be very unpleasant and the longer these small injuries are leftuntreated, the more likelihood there is of developing a chronic back problem.

Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do to help;

1. Commuting and Computing; your back is compressed when you sit for too longso try to move as much as possible during the day, and align your spine properlywhen sitting.

2. Overdoing it at the weekend; gardening or a game of tennis when your body isn’tprepared are two common culprits. The only preventative solution here is exercise.

3. Absentmindedness; picking something up from the floor, loading the dishwasher– it’s always the simplest of things. Prevent this by teaching your body to engage itscore muscles properly .

If you do find yourself suffering, the first step is to get things checked by aprofessional to rule out any serious damage. After that, a programme of stretching, strengthening and back maintenance can work wonders for long term relief. THEWORST THING you can do is NOTHING!

Personal trainers aren’t for everyone, but a trainer provides certain benefits that you can’t find when working out on your own. At Cotswolds Health and Fitness Club, we have a range of personal trainers all qualified to the highest of standards. Below are a few reasons why a personal trainer can work so effectively;Injury Rehabilitation – Our personal trainers are used to dealing with a wide range of injuries. If you have a problem you need help to recover from, a personal trainer will be able to guide you through the often daunting recovery phase and get you back fit and healthy as quickly as possible. Nutrition – A good personal trainer will be able to develop you a good, healthy eating plan. Fashionable diets don’t generally last in the long term. Something that is designed to support your training and specific weight loss goals will be far more effective. Our healthy eating plans have produced some brilliant results.Specificity – You should be training hard, but at the same time within your capabilities. If you’ve been going to the gym a long time and are not seeing results, maybe something has to change? Personal training is specific to you, so every training session is designed around what you and your goals.Stretching – How many of you stretch properly? A good stretch routine that hits all muscles in the body is essential to avoid postural problems and tight, sore muscles. If you’ve had a bad back it is amazing what some good specific stretches can do to help.If you are interested in finding out more about personal training, all initial consultations are free so it won’t cost you a penny! Come and find out how we could help you.

Surprise, surprise, let’s have an election. They’re like buses, one comes along & two others follow on behind. There’s no doubt that this time around the result will have far reaching repercussions on the

economic welfare of our nation and therefore it’s important that we get it right. That said, how do we get it right when we don’t have an effective opposition to bully the government into making the right choices. It is such a shame that the opposition have failed to come up with any concrete proposals to help make things better for the poorer people in society, it’s their job. At least, they should put together workable proposals to fund the long-term problems in both the NHS & social care. Instead we have the same old, same old, tax the rich, they can afford it. For many families with children, an income of £80,000 a year is not rich anymore so come on let’s get sensible. If everyone, including big business, paid their fair share we wouldn’t be having this debate.

What do people want? I’m sure that they want a well-funded NHS & social services but, to date, no one has come up with a way of making this happen. There just isn’t the money. Some people argue that we should pay more tax but why should we when we already pay National Insurance to fund healthcare & pensions. What we need is transparency by reverting National Insurance back to its original purpose. Then & only then should government ask us for more money to fund our vital services.

Perhaps we’re asking too much of politicians to find solutions to all our problems in one go. If they just concentrated on getting one thing right before moving onto another then voters may well be able to make an informed decision based on results. Meanwhile, it’s back to the status quo, little choice & little to get excited about.

12 | COTSWOLD TIMES

There can be no doubt about it that for astronomers who have endured the long damp and frosty nights of winter, the late Spring and Summer nights come as a blessed relief,

embellished as they are by some of the most fantastic cosmic sights. However, as always there is a price to pay as the days lengthen and, in order to get ideal viewing conditions, observing can go on well into the early hours, calling for some careful planning to avoid falling asleep at work the next day.

As we move into June the Sun is rising ever earlier, and setting correspondingly later, reaching its optimum on midsummers day, 21st June, the summer Solstice. These are the months when Solar astronomers fill their boots, observing our nearest star in safety via extremely sophisticated and specially filtered equipment. The quality of dedicated Solar telescopes available to the amateur today is truly amazing allowing direct observing of the Solar surface and flame like prominences on its outer edge, allowing us to see the Sun as much more than just a plain bright disc, but as a highly active, dynamic and spectacular heavenly body. Please do not try to look at the Sun through any optical device unless you have taken the very necessary precautions and have the correct filters – contact your local astronomical society or astronomer if you are unsure.

Illuminated by the Sun, the visible planets of our Solar System Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and tiny Mercury will be interesting object to look for over the Summer months, two are even bright enough to be visible against clear blue sky, as long as you know where to find them. From the beginning of June the bright planet Venus , named after the Roman Goddess of Love and shrouded in highly reflective carbon dioxide cloud, is a fine sight in the early morning before sunrise. In the late July evenings the tiny planet Mercury, slightly smaller than our Moon, will be visible as a solitary point of light above the Western horizon after the Sun has set. Being close to the Sun the surface temperatures would melt lead plus its fast close solar orbit will see it quickly slip behind the Sun only to re emerge as a morning object in mid September. Relatively very few people have observed Mercury so make time to view this tiny ‘Winged Messenger of the Roman Gods’ The fabulous gas giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, named after the Roman Gods of War and Agriculture respectively, are set to be the ‘wow factor’ planets of the summer. Jupiter, already a stunning object to the South as the sky darkens will remain good until merging into the twilight around the middle of August. Saturn, the mighty ringed planet stays stubbornly close to the horizon but still a spectacular sight through a good telescope. Currently playing host to the long running space probe Cassini, in orbit prior to its intentional kamikaze dive into the planet in October, its mission fully completed. Both Venus and Jupiter can also be found in daylight against a clear blue sky their positions found with reference to a current sky map or using one of the many computer or smart phone programmes available – better still, contact your local astronomical society and go along to a meeting.

The Moon will provide us with some excellent photo opportunities as it slides past Saturn on the 9th June, 7th July, 3rd & 30th August and with Jupiter on the 3rd June and 1st July, by the middle of August Jupiter will be far too close to the Sun, best to leave alone after then and concentrate on Saturn.

Arguably the most impressive sights during the warmer summer nights are the stars and starfields of the Milky Way which comes into its own whenever the Moon is new or out of view. When we see that wispy band of stars arcing overhead bear in mind that we are only looking at a fraction of the 1.5 billion stars that make it up. Saturn will be close to the Milky Way and always close to the ‘Teapot’ shaped constellation of Sagittarius, the Archer. With the aid of a star map available in any of the astronomical magazines, you should be able to locate the constellation just above the

horizon and binoculars will show the stars to become much more compact – you will be looking directly toward the centre of our own galaxy where the stars are increasingly closer together and where resides, it is understood, an immense, mysterious and deadly black hole. If you add into the list of upcoming Cotswold celestial events the regular meteor showers such as the Perseids on the 11th/12th August and the Orionids on the 21st/22nd of October plus the ever present satellites orbiting the earth, the Cotswold night skies are a gift for everyone to enjoy on those warm summer evenings – which leads on to some exciting news…

In the Cotswold area there are many places you can go to view the sky away from artificial light yet very few have gained any form of recognition. Fortunately there are organisations that exist dedicated to the preservation of the night sky and to oppose any threat to its integrity, namely, The Campaign for Dark Skies and the Dark Sky Discovery organisations. Fortunately for the Cotswolds, the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) organisation whos headquarters is in Northleach are highly supportive of the preservation of the quality of our night skies and include it in their policies. This in turn has led to the instigation of a major and exciting project With the involvement of the AONB, the Chipping Norton Amateur Astronomy Group and hopefully all of the astronomical societies and parish councils in the Cotswold area. The project is to be looking at not only gaining official recognition for those areas of the Cotswold that can offer dark skies, designated Dark Sky Discovery sites, but eventually a suitable dark sky recognition for the whole of the Cotswold area. A major project but one for which we will be looking for as much public support as possible – a lot of work ahead but if successful, will ensure that the clarity of our night skies are preserved for today and for the future generations of Cotswold stargazers.

The Chipping Norton Amateur Astronomy Group (CNAAG) remains active throughout the year and is available for all types of public, school and private events.

A new sign for the Town At the Parish Meeting on the 29th April four design proposals were put forward for a public vote, many thanks to all those who took part. This was the public choice.

As this was a design the Council had previously considered the prize vouchers will be split between the artwork, which came second, which was created by Karen Binns and another submission that the Council wish to use for the start of the Moreton Eight Walk. This design came from Nick Martin. Many thanks to all those who took part we loved all of your entries and any one would have been suitable for the job.

An informal News Updatefrom Robert Dutton16 May 2017CDC has finally submitted its 'Cotswold District Local Plan 2011-2031' and we now await a date for a Government Inspector to hold a Public Hearing to approve it. This Plan will then form the basis for planning decisions in the Cotswolds for the foreseeable future.

The 'Aldi' supermarket received planning consent last week and they have indicated that they plan to have it open by the end of the year.

The Moreton Drainage Scheme is now in its final stages. Fortunately work on the long section behind the hospital all the way down to the Stow Brook went well even though, at the crown of the land, they had to excavate the trench down five metres (sixteen feet). Residents can observe the results of this work by walking the footpath from the top of Parkers Lane (towards Longborough) – and will then see an unfortunate swathe carved straight through a field of rape and some hedges replanted. Work has now resumed on the section running alongside the railway line working back to Stow Brook, but difficult ground conditions are again being experienced and progress remains slow because of the need for shuttering. It will be with some relief that I expect the Scheme to be completed early next month, once several fallen trees which are blocking the river downstream from the exit portal have been removed.

There have been no more recent reports of unpleasant smells from effluent discharges into the River Evenlode opposite Croft Holm, but nevertheless Cllr Moor and I met with Thames Water again last week to try and move forward on this unacceptable ongoing problem. It may be significant that Thames Water have been hit hard by heavy fines from some recent prosecutions resulting from excessive effluent releases.

At Moreton Park work is finally taking place so that the roads there can be adopted.

The MTC Annual Meeting held on Saturday, 29 April in the Redesdale Hall was very successful and a good number of residents attended during the morning. I congratulated the town councillors on coming forward with this very useful format.

It’s National Carers Week . . . we talk to the Chippy Carer Coordinator

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face and recognising the contribution that 6.5 million people make to families and communities throughout the UK. There are over 60,000 carers in Oxfordshire alone!

Each year the campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Anney Harris, who retired from the professional team for Oxfordshire’s library service, is focussing on reaching out to communities, and is now a part-time Outreach Worker for Carers Oxfordshire. “The main local event this year will be in Witney with an open day at the Corn Exchange on Saturday, 17 June from 10–3.”

OPEN DAY at Witney Corn Exchange Saturday, 17 June, 10 am–3 pm.

There will also be information about Carers Oxfordshire’s service available to

pick up during the week in Sainsbury’s in Chipping Norton.

Monthly Carers Support GroupAnney runs a monthly Carers Support Group in Chipping Norton, meeting from 10.45–12 on the fourth Thursday of the month at Bitter & Twisted where about a dozen carers come along for coffee, a chat and information exchange . . . and specially-cooked complimentary scones! The group have formed a firm friendship and share experiences. All carers are welcome. A carer can often feel that it helps just to have someone to talk to who understands, so meeting monthly with other carers can be very supportive.

Carers Oxfordshire is a partnership between Oxfordshire County Council and the charity Action for

Carers Oxfordshire, part of Age UK Oxfordshire. They post out an informative, free quarterly Newsletter to carers and run free training courses for unpaid carers – see the website for details.

Anney also arranges to meet individual carers by appointment either at their homes or at the surgery, where she is able to book a consulting room as required. She says “there is a lot of information that carers may not know about, and contacts to share”. She can also fill out a Carers Assessment form with a carer for Oxfordshire County Council, which may result in a small annual personal budget to improve the carer’s well-being, as possibly lead to a respite break or other support for the cared for person.” Tel: 0345 050 7666 www.carersoxfordshire.org.uk Anney Harris

CDC Planning Commmittee meets once a month – the details are on p17 of this magazine. Full information is available online at www.cotswold.gov.uk or 01285 62300. This website also explains planning procedures, how to comment on applications and speak at a public planning meeting at CDC.

Faulty defibrillator: users urged to check battery connectionPeople and organisations should check public access defibrillators for a technical fault, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency advised today.

Defibrillator model, LIFEPAK 1000 Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) may have a technical fault which means they may not deliver an electric shock to the heart to someone who

is in cardiac arrest. This issue could potentially affect all LIFEPAK 1000 devices.

These devices are available in public places such as schools, airports, football stadiums and leisure centres. They are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as they are intended to be used by anyone. They are also found in hospitals, clinics and ambulances. The manufacturer’s logo on the front cover may vary, displaying ‘Medtronic’ or ‘Physio-Control’.

The manufacturer has sent a safety alert to people with affected

defibrillators with instructions for action. If you have not received an FSN from the manufacturer, please contact them directly. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a Medical Device Alert.

If your device powers off unexpectedly, either during inspection or during patient treatment, immediately remove and reinstall your existing battery to restore power to the device. If power is not restored, replace the battery with a spare battery and call Physio-Control immediately to arrange for servicing of your device.

It is important to implement a weekly schedule of battery removal and reinstallation for all LIFEPAK 1000 devices until contacted by Physio-Control to arrange repair for any affected devices. Removing and reinstalling the battery on a weekly basis will help make sure your device is ready for use. It is also important to always carry a fully charged spare battery.

As part of the maintenance and testing schedule, users of the LIFEPAK 1000 Defibrillator should always follow the Operating Instructions which direct users to routinely inspect both the battery well and battery contacts, especially if the devices have been exposed to vibrations or the battery has been installed for an extended period without being removed. Council Tax Refund Scam – Warning

9 May 2017A resident in the Cotswolds has received a telephone call from a ‘company’ which allegedly works for Cotswold District Council. He was told that he was due to receive a £6,000 council tax refund because his Council Tax banding has been too high in the past.

The telephone number of the bogus company is 03332 123132.

Please be aware that this scam may be targeting many residents in this area and please do not enter into any discussions with the caller. Most importantly, do not disclose any personal information such as banking details.

The local police have been made aware of this scam.

Archaeological Opportunity at Greystones

Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers with an interest in Greystones Farm and the surrounding area to take part in

some archaeological research this August. The research will involve taking soil cores and carrying out small test pits to help us understand land use and environment in the past. We would like to invite you to be part of the team.

Volunteers need to have a reasonable level of physical fitness (ie digging the garden, not working in the Gulag) and be willing to commit to three full days volunteering, either from 26–28 May (including the Bank Holiday Monday) or 29–31 August. A working day will run from 9-5 with regular breaks and an hour for lunch.

Participants must be willing to complete short surveys/interviews about their experiences. The work is part of a joint research project with Durham University and local partners from Cotswold Archaeology and Cotswold AONB which is seeking to better understand how landscapes are understood and managed. If you’d like to be part of the team or if you have further questions, please email me.

Bourton Roadrunners supports local charities

Proceeds from this year’s Highbridge Jewellers Bourton 10k were donated to two local charities on Thursday, 11 May.

Cheques for £1,300 each were presented to Cotswold Friends and the Stow Disability Association at the Club’s Cotswold Leisure Centre base in Bourton-on-the-Water.

Cotswold Friends provides friendship, support and transport to older

and vulnerable people in the north Cotswold community while the Stow Disability Association helps older and disabled people in the area through their weekly day centre activities and by providing transport. Both charities are based in Moreton-in-Marsh.

“Club members are asked to nominate charities and this year we had two clear favourites,” said Bourton 10k race director, Ian Shoemark. “It’s good that we’re able to support two local good causes”, he said.

The ever-popular Bourton 10k took

place in February with more than 500 athletes taking part. This year, celebrity runners included Olympic rower James Cracknell and four-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington. The race is sponsored by Highbridge Jewellers who provide financial support and donate the winners’ prizes.

Bourton Roadrunners meets at the Cotswold Leisure Centre in Bourton-on-the-Water at 7 pm on Tuesdays and 6.30 pm on Thursdays. Runners of all ages and ability are welcome to join.

On an overcast and humid day early in May I returned to the delightful Model Village in Bourton – a place I have visited as a “tourist” several times before – to interview the proprietors, Julian and Vicki Atherton. At every visit I spot something I haven’t noticed before, or learn something new about this magical place, and this occasion was no exception! The idea for the model village began with the original owners of the attached Old New Inn in the early 1930s; Mr Morris and his wife personally measured the village of Bourton and planned a replica in a one-ninth scale that would fit into the patch of green land behind the pub. Work began in 1936 and on the 13th May 1937, the day after the coronation of King George VI, the model village was opened to the public, as part of the celebration, for people to see what they were building. This popular attraction for tourists and locals is now excited to be celebrating its 80th anniversary!Finishing touches, including the planting and a “model of the Model (!)” were in place by 1940; perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the site continued to stay open throughout the Second World War. Although there are several other stand-alone model villages across the country, Bourton’s is unique because it is the only Grade II listed site and is the second oldest model village still surviving (the oldest being in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire). The layout remains unchanged and is still almost entirely accurate, apart from the location of Birdland (the real one moved sites some years ago); the Church of St Lawrence is also slightly out of its real location in order to fit it in, as it was deemed of sufficient importance to be included. The church of St Lawrence is the largest of the model buildings; it has recently been restored and repaired. Tiles were individually replaced, the roof taken off, the interiors repaired and the whole building was given a sparkling clean; an exciting discovery was the find of a 1937 penny that had been left in the roof by the original stonemason! Atop the church’s tower are four model finials, and on the ground beside the church is one of the original real finials – an example of the attention to detail and authenticity throughout this site. Ironically, the real St Lawrence’s is currently itself undergoing some major restoration! The “River Windrush” winds through this village as it does outside in the real world; as visitors stroll slowly along the paths and over the tiny bridges everything is familiar and intricately replicated.

Julian and Vicki Atherton came to take over the Old New Inn and the Model Village eighteen years ago, on 11th May 1999, taking over from Peter Morris, the son of the original owner; so the site has only ever been in the hands of two families since its inception in the 1930s. Since their arrival, the Athertons have concentrated on the Model Village as their primary business interest, and open the Inn for refreshments in the summer tourist months only. The Village is open every day except Christmas Day or on rare occasions when it has snowed: what may outside in the real world seem a relatively light covering of snow can engulf the miniature building and paths!Busiest from April to September, the Village nonetheless has a steady revenue and constantly good visitor numbers. The entrance price is £3.60 for adults, £2.80 for children and £3.20 for seniors – this has been maintained for seven years. Once through the turnstiles, a small hand stamp ensures you can return as many times throughout the day as you might wish! The site also holds a collection of John Constable miniatures and a display of intricate and accurate architectural examples of British cottages.A small selection of gifts can be obtained from the entrance kiosk, including magnets and bookmarks; there is even a children’s book based on the Model Village by an Emmy-award winning American author who once lived in Bourton, David Wierners, entitled “Mystery of the Model Village” (£4.95, Wavyline Publishing) Upcoming projects include the restoration of the Manor House; the most recent one has been the Cottage Hospital, which now gleams with cleanliness! Because all the buildings are built in genuine Cotswold stone and by real stonemasons (rather than by the more commonly used model makers), they have survived very well considering their age. Of course there is ongoing and extensive (not to mention expensive!) maintenance required to keep all the buildings, pathways, planting and accessories in tip-top condition. Two full-time gardeners and one full-time stonemason are employed to assist the Athertons in their successful upkeep of the site. The use of bedding plants has been replaced under Vicki’s keen supervision by a planned landscaping of miniature garden plants such as alpines, conifers and tiny but mature shrubs and trees; there are even two miniature apple and pear trees that bear full-

size fruit! Vicki is also keen on and expert at interior crafts as she makes many of the accessories and furnishings for inside each building. It is this sort of passionate and enthusiastic craftsmanship by the current owners that stood out to English Heritage when they gave their recommendation for listed status to the then Heritage Minister, Ed Vaizey. As well as the many

international visitors (it is especially popular with Japanese and American tourists!), and local residents and schoolchildren, there have over the years been many famous face wandering amongst the paths; these include: Princess Margaret; the Prince and Princess Hitachi of Japan, Jeremy Vine, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, and Martin Clunes and the cast of the

film “Nativity 3”! Children visiting at the moment are given “gold” crowns to wear, along with a commemorative book mark and a free entry voucher. Towards the conclusion of my pleasant meeting with the charming and enthusiastic Athertons, they told me a story that sums up the atmosphere of this place: years ago, they discovered three orphan ducklings in their back garden and vowed to rear them by hand; sadly two were caught later by foxes but one remained and thrived. They named her “Dyson” because she loved to wander up and down the pathways of the Model Village hoovering up anything tasty! After Dyson had grown and literally flown the nest, the Athertons were delighted when she returned to her “home” to visit them; for the last 6 or 7 years she has come back in the late Spring, usually with one or two “boyfriends” in tow! Dyson loves to wander round her old haunts or follow her “parents” around as they go about their daily work here. Visitors who pick up one of the 80th Birthday bookmarks can spot Dyson if they look carefully – alongside one of her companions, she is staring intently at the model of the “Bakery on the Water” café!Let us all hope that both Dyson and our delightful Model Village are around for many years to come!

On Saturday December 23rd 1944, thick cloud cover brought the shroud of darkness even

earlier than usual to the village of Great Rollright, Oxfordshire. Preparations and the thoughts of the residents of the village Manor house were focussed toward the coming Christmas celebrations but what was about to happen would shatter any festive spirit and the memory remain with all concerned forever. At around 6pm, someone may have briefly heard a rumbling in the distance growing ever louder, the house began to shake and there was a glimpse of something very big and very fast flash past and disappeared into the darkness, followed by a terrific shuddering impact. That catastophic and violent conclusion marked the final resting place of the USAF B-17G Flying Fortress bomber, serial number 43 - 38812 referred to as ‘812’, and her crew of 9 crashing in fields to the West of the village. The crew were all fresh from the USA and relatively inexperienced but as was the custom, the pilot Lt Clifford Hendrikson from Jasper, Indiana, was an experienced hand with 25 bombing missions behind him, and only 5 more to do before he could return to the USABelonging to the 749th Bomb Squadron of the 457th Bomb Group, on the 19th of December they had taken off from their base at RAF Glatton, south of Peterborough crossing the North Sea and on into Europe heading for a target near Gemund on the German/Belgium border, a distance of some 300 miles . Behind them the weather closed in and a direct return flight to Glatton proved impossible as most airfilelds in Southern England were rendered unusable. A lengthy diversion was made and there were some very cold and weary flight crews that must have emerged from their aircraft after landing far from their Cambridge base, at RAF Portreath in Cornwall. It was a further 3 days before weather conditions were deemed good enough to fly back to Glatton and on Saturday the 23rd of December as darkness fell, the crew of B17 ‘812 watched the Cornish coast disappear behind them, their intended course taking them along the Bristol Channel, over the Vale of Evesham to Banbury and eventually dropping down to base, and Christmas, at Glatton. At some point ‘812 and an accompanying B17 found themselves above extensive cloud cover and once again received the depressing news that Glatton and all surrounding airfields were again closed by bad weather, both aircraft were once again diverted. At this point it is not clear where they were headed for although from the northerly heading of the final track, RAF Shennington and Wellesbourne Mountford would have been close to track and possible landing alternatives. According to a report from an eye witness in the accompanying aircraft, inexplicably ‘812 was seen to slowly drop away and disappeared into the clouds, they never saw it again. Resident in the Manor house on that evening was an experienced off duty nurse, Sister Elened Megan Lewis of the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service and a nurse at Chipping Norton Hospital, who after the impact, realised very quickly what had happened, alerted the emergency services by telephone at around 6.15 and, accompanied by other villagers armed with torches, made her way to the crash site. What followed was an extraordinary act of bravery. With jagged, smouldering wreckage all around her, nurse Lewis crawled into the remains of

the mangled wreck ignoring the obvious dangers of spilt high octane fuel and live ammunition, and administered Morphine and first aid to the members of the crew that she found were still alive, staying with them until the emergency services arrived at approx 7.10pm. Of the crew 4 died on impact, 2 died in Chipping Norton Hospital and 2 more died in Banbury hospital - the only survivor, tail gunner Sgt Clifford Heinrich who was tended to by Sister Lewis was very seriously injured and was eventually returned to the USA, he is now in his nineties. Nurse Lewis was

subsequently recognised for her bravery on that night. In the years after the war ended, two very young boys would hear anecdotal stories of the crashed bomber, stories that would stay with both of them for many years until fortune and coincidence would bring them together to remember the crew of B17G 43 - 38812. In 2015 Tony King, Bloxham born and now chair of the North Cotswold Area Military Vehicle Trust , and local historian James Tobin from Hook Norton, both realised that it would be an important project to have a memorial put in place to the crew of the fallen bomber, not at the crash site itself but in Great Rollright village where it could always be easily viewed. After 14 months of careful planning and organising, on Sunday May the 30th 2017, between 150 and 200 villagers and people from the surrounding area gathered together at Great Rollright Village Hall for a fitting and moving ceremony to the crew of B17 ‘812. Side by side the flags of Great Britain and the United States flew together as the standards of the United States Air Force, Royal Air Force, Air Force Association and the Royal British Legion were paraded in and posted by the appropriate uniformed units. After the welcoming speech by the Chairman of the Parish Council, a brief account was given of the events of the night of the crash and a role call was made of the crew of B17 ‘812. Following a moving rendering of John Gillespi Magee’s poem ‘High Flight’, representatives of the USAF and the Royal Air Force unveiled the memorial, wreath laying was followed by a blessing by the vicar of Great Rollright. The simple memorial consists of a locally quarried and shaped ironstone plinth upon which are two stainless steel plaques with etched details of the aircraft and mission, circumstances of the crash and a full listing of all who lost their lives ending with the words ‘We will remember them’. The ceremony drew to a close with the lowering of the flags, and as the last post sounded and after the units had departed, a lone piper sounding a lament to the fallen, turned slowly, and marched away into the distance. After almost 74 years the 8 crew members of B17 43 – 38812 who died far from home on the 23rd of December 1944, were fittingly honoured by the residents of Great Rollright, Oxfordshire. Time

will inevitably dull the memory of the event but with the determination of people such as

Tony King and James Tobin together with the close support of the Parish Council and the local community, Great Rollright’s monument to the crew of B17 ‘812, and similar memorials dedicated to other crews, will endure for present and future generations to remember not only those that perished locally, but to include in their thoughts the fifty five thousand allied bomber crews that lost their lives during those tragic times, for the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Independent retirement living doesn’t get any better than at The Paddocks in Milton-under-Wychwood – an outstanding extra care and independent living development offering independence without isolation.

Lorna lives at The Paddocks with her husband Aubrey. She said: “We lived in a property opposite The Paddocks and saw it being built – we assumed it was a care home and wouldn’t be suitable for us. But we were wrong! We have our own two-bedroom apartment, which is lovely and spacious, and there is a brilliant community spirit here.”

The Paddocks is an extra care development combining independent living with flexible care options, specifically for the over-55s. It means you can live in your own home without needing to worry about gardening, window cleaning and other property maintenance. And although neither of us needs care at the moment, it’s nice to know that it’s available if we need it in the future.”

“Moving here was definitely a sensible decision for us.”

Set in an idyllic Cotswold village a short distance from Burford and Chipping Norton, The Paddocks provides much more than luxury apartments – it has an onsite restaurant, an activity room, hairdressers and a post office, a mobility scooter garage, and shared gardens – there is an emphasis on a communal environment. The village has a number of small, thriving businesses, a Co-op store and a service station. Residents can choose to socialise and join in with the activities and events on offer, with members of the local community welcome to enjoy the facilities, too.

For Brenda, who moved into The Paddocks when it first opened at the end of 2015, a sense of community was exactly she was looking for: “This place is absolutely first class! Before I moved in here, I was living on my own in a bungalow in the village and finding life a bit miserable. Now I enjoy getting involved with the activities on offer here, and take part in the knitting group, bingo and more. I’m much happier now.”

The Paddocks provides apartments for rent and shared ownership. If you’re interested in finding out more about living at The Paddocks, and to find out about availability, contact House Manager Carly Taylor on 01249 466156.

At nearly 1000 feet above sea level, Elkstone church is the highest in the Cotswolds and is famed for its Norman architecture, stone carvings and golden light.

David Pierce,Churchwarden at the Church of St John the Evange-list, between Chreltenham and Gloucester, said: “The increased use of the Cotswold’s parish churches for concerts and other community events has highlighted the problem of having no toilet facilities. These are difficult to provide because of the huge ex-pense involved in connecting to mains water, power and sewage. We’ve overcome these problems by investing in a sustainable, green solution.”

A grant of £5,000 from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust is helping to fund an eco-loo at the Church. The ‘green loo’ building is situated in the churchyard, it has been created in green oak,

which has a natural appearance and may stand for hundreds of years.

The eco-loo, sourced from Finland, enables toilet waste to be used as a fertiliser for flowers and shrubs – and the church has also developed unused parts of the churchyard to create a wild-flower meadow.

The eco-loo will be officially opened by the Bishop of Tewkesbury, the right Rev’d Robert Springett on 8 June at 12.30 pm.

Embroidered BodiesGarments, Stitches and Stories from the Ashmolean

May –10 September

The Broadway Museum and Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition of embroidered clothing from the Ashmolean Museum, revealing many hidden gems from its collections. The Ashmolean houses thousands of textiles – Embroidered Bodies displays a selection of clothing from their rich collections, including an eighteenth-century Englishman’s waistcoat and a Japanese coat from the opening years of the twentieth century. Embroidered Bodies has been curated by Aimée Payton, Eastern Art Administrator at the Ashmolean Museum. She said: “We have some stunning embroideries in our stores, many of which are being displayed for the first time.” “There are hundreds of different ways to make an embroidery stitch. Delicate stitches exquisitely depict animals, flowers, people, and patterns that can provide fascinating information about the wearer. Some techniques, such as chain stitch, are universal and mastered by embroiderers everywhere. Others are often only found in specific countries. Stitches can help identify where something was made, who wore it, and often why. Embroidered Bodies tells many stories, giving an insight into how these beautifully stitched garments would have been made and worn. Discover the threads of the tales within the stitches and unravel the meaning behind the embroidered garments for yourselves!Normal admission charges apply: Adults £.5.00 (16+) Family £10.00 Children (5-15 years): £2 Under fives free. FOUNDI would like to say a very very big thank you to all the people who have prayed and willed Bradley back to me. I picked him up from Swindon on the 10th may – how he got to Swindon GOD only knows. Also a very big thank you to Barbara Burgess from Nottingham who has played a very big part in Bradley’s return, Barbara is an animal communicator. Please if you see a poster take it down. Again, a big thank you to all – and never underestimate the power of will and prayer.

NO STONE will be left unturned to make Stow Cotswold Festival a day to remember. In a major coup, the Saturday, July 15 event hosts an exclusive master class of dry-stone walling. This spectacular test of toil and talent is set to draw in crowds to the community Festival celebrating Cotswold life, heritage and crafts, from 11am to 11pm. The crème de la crème are set to battle it out in the contest, organised by the Cotswolds Conservation Board which oversees our precious 790sq mile Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). “Past champion wallers will pit their skills against each other for a top prize of £500,” revealed Cotswolds AONB rural skills and grants officer Edward Bonn. “Two competitors will build a 1.5m wall, to be judged by the expert eye of Master Craftsman John Day, from the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.”Facing up to each other are Jeremy Mort, from Natural Boundaries, Evesham, and James Bullock, who runs Cheltenham-based Cotswold Stone Designs.Edward added: “Previous dry-stone walling demonstrations, particularly the annual competition, have been immensely popular with participants and spectators. The upcoming demonstration will showcase the best walling, which is also a vital skill in preserving the Cotswolds landscape.”

Almost rubbing noses with the wallers will be traditional Cotswold Sheep, known as Lions for their shaggy long ‘dreadlocks’. Jonathan and Mel Brunyee, from Conygree Farm, Aldsworth, show their rare breed animals and a newly-shorn fleece. Visitors will be able to follow the fleece’s journey to become a finished product. Northleach Spinners and Weavers will wash, prepare and spin it, offering some hands-on demonstrations. Some of the wool thread will help create a community ‘crewel work’ embroidery. Enthusiasts can add their own stitches to the commemorative tableau, designed by expert Barbara Banning, featuring Stow Stocks,

sheep and trees. They can also sign their names, ages, and where they’re from in a special book. Knitters and felters will also display their art. And a complete wool suit, especially made for Cotswold Farm Park owner and BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson, will displayed. Sporting original multi-coloured designs, will be an inspiring exhibition of more off-beat sheep. Stow Primary School pupils are vying to create the best decorated pottery sheep money boxes in a special Festival competition launched by Stow and District Civic Society. Sponsored by Newlands of Stow Care Home, the finished creations will be herded into display at St Edwards Hall on Festival day.More adventurous spectators should be able to spot real sheep in nearby fields on tours up the massive 88ft 15th century tower of St Edward’s Church, from noon. Back on the ground, there is something for all the family. Cotswold School Band welcomes in festival-goers to a programme including circus entertainer John Haynes, wowing with fire-eating and escapology; a Zumba demonstration; Punch and Judy; Beacon Gospel Choir and Caribbean Steel Band Boil Up Tropical. A bustling market features craft, food and charity stalls, a jumbo tombola, Guess the 4.5ft Monkey’s Birthday competition, face-painting, children’s games and a treasure hunt, funfair roundabouts and a roving town crier. St Edward’s Hall also shows its armour, arms and paintings from a collection marking the 1646 Battle of Stow, the English Civil War’s last major skirmish.Cheltenham-based four-piece, covers band Monkey Jam takes over from 7pm so people can dance until the sun goes down.Three local charities are being supported by the Festival: Kate’s Home Nursing, Great Western Air Ambulance and Stow Primary School. The Festival car park will be manned by the Sam Pilcher Trust.

As the largest Festival held in the Cotswolds, this year’s Burford Festival is continuing to push its boundaries by introducing an innovative range of ‘happy hour talks’ which people can enjoy on their way home from work or at a weekendHugo Ashton, the Festival Chairman explained that “the happy hour talks will showcase nationally acclaimed experts and are specially arranged for those who are high on knowledge acquisition but low on available time and budget’The HAPPY HOUR speakers include the following outstanding speakers:• Drew Gardner: 6pm Tuesday 13th June: The Festival is honoured to announce its latest key happy hour speaker, the internationally renowned 3D filmmaker, Drew Gardner. His special expertise is taking videos in full 360°, capturing in an amazing way the full visual experience of being there. He gets his camera in normally unreachable places such as from racing cars, plane wing walkers and the Catalan Castellers and if, we are lucky, we will see the 360° view from the top of the mast of an Americas Cup yacht. Drew will show his astounding, astonishing work. This is how all photographs will be taken in the future – no more selfies capture everything all around! If you only a small interest in photography this is a must see.• Frances Corner: 10am Saturday 17th June: Fashion matters to the economy (£28billion) to society (880,000 jobs) and to each of us personally. Also announced is the Head of London College of Fashion, Frances Corner uses fashion to reach out to the wider community, to engage with environmental sustainability and to increase awareness of social issues. She is a fashion activist who wants to use fashion and clothing to change the world. • Antonia Boström: 11.45 on Saturday 17th June: Antonia is Keeper of the Sculpture, Metalwork Ceramics & Glass of the V&A.

She is curator of a major part of the Nation’s Treasure House, the V&A, she will talk about a selection of recent and current projects. The V&A is going through an exciting period of transition in both its national and international programmes, some of which will be touched on in this talk. • Deborah Warner: 6pm Monday 12th June: Deborah, a world famous director, will discuss some of her most recent work – ‘King Lear’ with Glenda Jackson at the Old Vic, ‘Der Sturm’ (The Tempest) at the Salzburg Festival, ‘Billy Budd’ at Teatro Real in Madrid, and the ‘Testament of

Mary’ in Paris. She will give an insight into directing actors and performances at the highest level.• Jan Harlan: 6pm Friday 16th June: The Festival is delighted to have persuaded a Hollywood producer of such films as

The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange, who worked for 30 years with director Stanley Kubrick and also with Stephen Spielberg, to talk at the Festival. He will tell the surprising techniques used to make great films.

Increasing Awareness of Pancreatic CancerAcross the nation this year, 9,600 men and women will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 8,800 will die of the diseaseIt is the UK’s fifth worst cause of cancer death, with a survival rate of just 5% – the worst of the twenty-two most common cancers.

Twenty-six people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each day – twenty-four of them will die each day. Despite these stats, research into the disease is chron-ically underfunded.

Pancreatic Cancer Action is a UK charity founded by Ali Stunt, a rare survivor of the disease, to raise awareness of pancreat-ic cancer with the public, the UK medical community and the government, in order to improve early diagnosis.

Ali Stunt says that: “Despite the increas-ingly high rate of pancreatic cancer in the UK, our new research highlights a funda-mental lack of awareness of the tell-tale signs of the disease.

“With no screening process for pancreatic cancer currently available, it is imperative that people can spot the signs and symp-toms early enough to make surgery a via-ble option, in order to secure earlier diag-nosis of this deadly disease, and improve survival rates.”

Only 10% of patients are eligible for po-tentially curative surgery due to late diag-nosis.

Symptoms include (but are not limited to) jaundice, weight loss, new onset diabetes and severe abdominal or back pain. Most people with these symptoms do not have pancreatic cancer, but anyone with one or more of them should see their GP. Studies show that diagnosis early enough for sur-gery increases a patient’s life expectancy significantly. For more information visit: pancreaticcanceraware.org.

You can help to increase awareness and ultimately reduce pancreatic can-cer deaths in the UK – contact Nata-sha at Pancreatic Cancer Action at: [email protected]

Shipston Home Nursing is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and is planning a number of fundraising events throughout the year, including a 20th Anniversary Ball in September and a 10k Run in April.

The charity was launched in 1997 to provide essential care to terminally-ill people who wish to be nursed at home.

Rebecca Mawle, fundraising co-ordinator for the charity said: "The charity is fantastic and our nurses are truly amazing.

"We are very well supported by the local community and the charity simply would not exist without the hundreds of volunteers that we have. Local people in the community help day in day out, year in year out and for that we are so grateful.”

Shipston Home Nursing was founded by a district nurse called Charlie Wells, with the help of local doctors from the medical centre at Shipston as well as businessmen and friends. The charity is funded through a variety of sources and they currently care for 26 terminally-ill people.

The anniversary ball in September is set to be the highlight of the celebrations at Admington Hall with a 1920s theme to it, featuring a champagne reception and carriages. Look out for more information.

Litter Strategy for EnglandGov’t proposals new enforcement, education and

community engagement

Cleaning up litter cost taxpayers nearly £800m. The new measures are designed to hit the most serious litterers with £150 fines, while vehicle owners could receive penalty notices when it can be proved litter was thrown from their car – this notice is already in force in London.

Further new measures include:• Issuing new guidance for councils to update ‘binfrastructure’ with new designs and better distribution of public litter bins, making it easier for people to discard rubbish.• Stopping councils from charging householders for disposal of DIY household waste at civic amenity sites (rubbish dumps) – legally, household waste is supposed to be free to dispose of at these sites.• Recommending that offenders on community sentences, including people caught fly-tipping, help councils clear up litter and fly-tipped waste.• Working with Highways to target the worst litter hotspots • Creating a ‘green generation’ - educating children to lead the fight against litter through Eco-Schools and boosting participation in national clean-up days.• Creating a new expert group to examine options to reduce the worst kinds of litter, including plastic bottles and drinks containers, cigarette ends and fast food packaging.

Ensuring the right homes are built in the right places From an article By Rebecca Pullinger for CPRE

Regulations requiring local authorities to develop and publish brownfield land registers came into force on Easter Sunday (16 April), giving us the opportunity to develop an accurate picture of the amount and whereabouts of brownfield land. As is traditional at this time of year, they offer new hope – for an increasingly reliable picture of the country’s brownfield capacity and, in my case, less time spent trying to work out the data independently!

Our research last year, using the pilot Brownfield Registers, suggested there is space for at least 1.1 million homes on brownfield land in England. However, this study also illustrated a number of caveats in the current way local authorities identify and assess whether or not a brownfield site is suitable for housing.

To make sure that this valuable resource is used to its full potential, we need a proactive approach to identifying sites.

Once a brownfield site has been identified, the regulations require councils to consider whether or not development is ‘achievable’ in the next 15 years. Then an assessment of the site’s availability for development in the short (0-5 years) or medium (5-10 years) term has to be made: a term in the regulations that relies very much on a willing landowner or developer. The final step is to assess whether or not the site is suitable for residential development, taking account of any adverse impact on the natural environment, local built environment and local amenity.

A decade ago, our research Untapped Potential showed how these sorts of assessments underestimated the potential of previously developed land; how the contribution of small sites is underestimated and how a proactive approach was essential in stimulating a sustainable urban renaissance. It seems likely that without appropriate guidance this is still likely to be the case.

Ten years on, we are updating that research and hope to use it to support a call for better national guidance that will ensure a proactive, comprehensive search for suitable brownfield is undertaken in a transparent and consistent way. Going forward, we’ll be looking for ways in which we can encourage local community involvement in the search for brownfield land - to ensure that the right homes are built in the right places.

S UNDS ALIVE SOMEWHERE OVER THAT RAINBOW

Nicholas JohnJudy Garland’s first live appearances in London were in 1951, at the Palladium where she topped the bill for a month. Six years later, in October 1957, she returned to the Dominion Theatre for another month-long season entitled “Miss Showbusiness” culminating in her appearance at the Palladium as part of the Royal Variety Performance on 18 November .

In October 1957, prior to the Dominion run, she recorded a session at EMI’s Abbey Road studios and, between 2 and 9 August 1960, she returned to record a further twenty numbers. My father, Michael John (1927-2003), then working as a singer for EMI, had fond memories of these sessions.

“I’d seen Judy Garland once before, at a dinner at the Dorchester and, to be honest, I hadn’t been that impressed, considering her newsworthy appeal and ‘star status.’ She was garishly dressed with heavy make-up, surrounded by showbiz disciples and appeared loud and brash. But then I was

contracted to be part of a four-piece backing-group for a session with her at EMI’s Abbey Road studios. The four of us were grouped behind our single stand microphone directly behind the vocal booth that she was to record in. I fully expected some Hollywood ‘airs and graces’ and I wasn’t surprised when, as we started to rehearse the first number, Judy stopped the recording by walking out of the booth, saying loudly that “this won’t do at all!”

“Here we go,” I thought, “another temperamental star!” But she announced

that she couldn’t hear us very well, smiled a wonderful smile and told the producer that she would like to sing with us, not in front of us. Screens and mics were moved and then, as everyone prepared for a first full take, she turned to me and asked for the note to check her pitch. I was captivated in that moment and spent the rest of the session in a daze, with Judy Garland singing close to my right ear.

A month later, I found myself at the most famous theatre in the world, the London Palladium, for the 1957 Royal Variety Performance. The bill included Mario Lanza, Vera Lynn, Count Basie and His Orchestra, Tommy Steele and, of course, Judy Garland, who we were backing live. After a long, orchestral overture, she walked onto the stage and the theatre erupted. I had never seen anything like it. We were at the back and this tiny figure, alone in the lights, mesmerised the audience, holding them in the palm of her hands. I had never seen a performance of such strength and charisma – the sheer power and personality that poured out of her was astonishing.

In August 1960, we were again at Abbey Road, with more singers this time. Studio One was large enough for a full orchestra (conducted by Norrie Paramor), and Judy led them with tempo and rhythm and working with us on harmony and volume. At one point, someone suggested to her that we held a note so we’d all stop at the same time. She looked at the four of us and smiled, “I don’t stop – I hold it through to the very end!”

There is an interesting clip on YouTube entitled EMI recording with Judy 1960 in which Joan Coulson, now an author who has written extensively about Judy Garland, recounts her own memories of one of the August sessions at Abbey Road – well worth a watch.

Judy Garland once addressed the London Palladium thus: “I believe in the idea of a rainbow. I’ve spent my whole life trying to get over it!”

North Cotswolds Gymnastics and Trampolining Academy (NCGTA) have joined British Gymnastics.

Joining British Gymnastics provides us with the opportunity to be part of a strong and internationally-known organisation, ensuring a safe, child-friendly and fun environment in which to enjoy gymnastics.

Caroline says “Becoming part of British Gymnastics is a massive success for us as the criteria to become part of one of the most recognised gymnastics organisations in the world are incredibly stringent!”

Caroline Gill set up Stow Gymnastics

Club just three years ago, quickly growing to over 350 attendees each week. A dynamic approach encourages children of all ages to be passionate about the sport. The classes are varied allowing children to discover which direction they want to take within gymnastics.

The focus on fun is what makes the classes different. Gymnastics tuition from pre-school to the Senior Elite Squad helps children grow in confidence. They are able to see their progress through awards, badges, displays and competitions.

• Trampolining has gone from strength to strength since added to our gym classes in 2015. We now also have dedicated trampolining classes, even including an adult class.

• Cheerleading is taking the nation by storm and builds strength, stamina

and flexibility. Our classes are led by Lauren who is a world cheerleader competitor.

All our classes are held at Upper Rissington School on Mitchell Way every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening as well as all day Saturday. Look online for full details of available classes: http://ncgta.co.uk/news-info. We offer free taster sessions.

Charity Match SuccessThe Cricketing Summer started with a great community event at Moreton Cricket Club as the charity match held on 22 April was graced with excellent weather which brought out the crowds.

This fundraising event for the pavilion development fund was a great day, in addition to the cricket match between Moreton Select Team and Princess IX, a bouncy castle, face painting and other entertainment was available for children to enjoy whilst their parents relaxed in sun with a drink.

The Club would like to thank all who supported the event on the day and with donations to the very successful raffle and auction that took place after the game.

The event was sponsored by “Waves” Car Wash services who also donated some great prizes for the raffle. The Auction was also well supported with Parachute Jumps, Shooting Days and Signed Football Shirts signed by some legends all up for grabs. The whole day raised over £3,000 for the development fund.

Ladies First Outing The first ladies cricket team representing NCYCC and Moreton CC attended a softball competition at Leamington Cricket Club on 14 May.

They played three games and won two with the third game only just losing by one run! On display at the competition were the Women’s World Cup Trophy and the Champions One Day Trophy which will take place this summer in England.

Awards EveningWith the season completed Moreton Rangers enjoyed an end season dinner at The Manor Hotel in Moreton. The club uses the evening to celebrate the season with awards to the players and special awards to those who work hard behind the scenes.

This year the Chairman’s Award was presented to Mr John Currill who as groundsman at Moreton Cricket Club looks after three football pitches for Moreton Rangers Junior Teams. His continued hard work in cutting and rolling these pitches mean that they are in pristine condition and the envy of visiting teams. Club Chairman Paul Luker said “John gives up a great deal of his time to tend the football pitches, without volunteers like him the club would have to pay for the pitch maintenance which would mean higher subscriptions for all.”

First-Team Coach Nick Timms reflected on the season and encouraged all to learn the lessons from this season when the last couple of months the results cost Rangers the chance to be promoted.

He also thanked all who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the team including groundsman Bob Noctor, Craig Payne who does a multitude of jobs for the team and Mandy Timms for sorting all the teams paperwork. The supporters had been great this season and once again local business had backed the Club, in particular Mike Honour Widows for the Clubroom work, R&W Walker Butchers as kit sponsors and the Black Bear Inn for hosting the team after games, on race nights and transport to cup games. Dave Groom was thanked for his efforts with the reserve team when they were struggling and helped with the presentation of their awards.

The awards for the teams were: First TeamSupporters Player Gary Smith Young Player Cal Peters Top Goalscorer Lee Brooks Players Player Jake Meredith Managers Player Jamie Wyatt
