It has only been a month…. since the August Bank Holiday weekend, and in that time we have had a ‘roller-coaster of weather, watched with awe, excitement and pride as our Paralympians took on the world in Rio and collected a huge haul of medals; we’ve loved the big shows and exhibitions, and the village flower shows with cream teas and homemade jam. Now the schools have gone back and the new uni-student year is just beginning, and so is ‘Strictly’!

It’s no surprise that the magazines reflect some of this! We have an interview with Matt Gotrel from Chipping Campden who rowed for Gold with Team GB; photos and reports from two hugely successful events, Stow’s Pop-Up Museum and the Moreton Show; and Mike Boyes shows us how to photograph the beautiful and beastly things in our gardens.

Our magical ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ has already established a hold as hedgerows glisten with berries and wild fruits, and the valleys are cloaked filled with mist on a fine morning. On good days the sun is definitely still warm enough to enjoy being out and about, but it’s dark early!

It is only a month until we start* the December editions (*in fact we have been receiving Christmas-y things for a while) – so if you have an entry to go into the magazines, an idea for an articles or a photograph to share, please let us know a.s.a.p. – it will really help.

We really will appreciate some help elsewhere too – can you help to deliver magazines in your area? We are not talking ’masses’ of magazines – enough for your road, or section of a road? Ideally a small group of 2 or more people, who can do the delivery quite easily between them, and cover each other over holidays… If you can, please let me know – it will be enormously appreciated!

Looking at all the events going on, we hope that you will enjoy October - and look forward to hearing from you, maybe?

Best wishes

Editor

OCTOBER 2016OUR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

LETTERS AND DIARIESPride of place must go to a collection of letters by the war hero and iconic travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, edited by Adam Sisman (£30, 6th October). And to a third collection of prose, including his diaries, covering 2005-2015 from the peerless Alan Bennett (£25, 20th October).

OTHER NON-FICTIONRoyal history features large. John Julius Norwich considers the lives of Henry VIII, Francis I, Charles V and Suleiman the Magnificent in Four Princes (£25, 20th October). The children of Charles I and the English Civil Wars come under the scrutiny of Linda Porter in Royal Renegades (£20, 6th October), whilst the women who made 16th century Europe are the subject of Sarah Gristwood’s new book, Game of Queens (£20, 6th October).

Moving up-to-date, there is a political memoir Kind of Blue from Kenneth Clarke (£25, 6th October), and there are the memoirs of the political interviewer Jeremy Paxman in A Life in Questions (£20, 6th October). The world of the foreign correspondent is brought to life in We Chose to Speak of War and Strife by John Simpson (£25, 6th October), whilst General Lord (Richard) Dannatt looks at Britain and her army since 1945 in Boots on the Ground. Two important biographies are already in stock (£30 each): Kenneth Clark (of Civilisation fame) by James Stourton, and Steven Runciman, the historian of the Crusades, by Minoo Dinshaw.

GARDENSTwo titles stand out. Landscape of Dreams surveys the gardens of Isabel and Julian Bannerman (£50, 6th October) and Anne and Michael Heseltine have written about the garden at their family home, Thenford (£40, 20th October).

FICTIONAlone in Berlin by Hans Fallada was a huge success a few years ago. Nightmare in Berlin now receives its first English translation (£15.99, 3rd October). The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell reaches its 10th title with The Flame Bearer. John Grisham is back with another legal thriller, The Whistler (£20, 25th October). Antoine Laurain, author of The President’s Hat and The Red Notebook, has a new novel, French Rhapsody (£8.99, available now).

HUMOUR AND GIFTSWe have lots of gift and humour books (dogs and cats to the fore!) for around £10-15. The Best of Matt 2016 is bound to be popular (£7.99, 6th October) as are the latest unpublished letters to the Telegraph, Stop the World, I Want to Get Off... (£7.99, 6th October). There will be eight new Ladybird humorous titles for adults, including Red Tape and The Sickie (£6.99 each, 20th October).

A MISCELLANYWith the Festive Season fast approaching, we have a lovely selection of Christmas cards and wrapping paper and Advent calendars. For all you Persephone fans, there will be three new titles this month. Our children’s section is well stocked with a great variety for all ages. There’s a new short story this month Didn’t We Have a Lovely Time! from Michael Morpurgo, and the husband and wife Santa and Simon Sebag Sebag Montefiore have combined on The Royal Rabbits of London (both 7+).

Drone technology has been adopted by many farmers to assist with chemical and fertiliser application decisions, with improvements in cameras and mapping systems making these types of machines well suited to agricultural life.

Drones help to solve a persistent farming problem – how to get a thorough look at a field almost plant-by-plant. Satellites have previously been used to provide images, but these can sometimes lack detail and may not be available at all when there’s thick cloud cover. GPS-guided aerial vehicles however offer the flexibility of attaching multiple sensors – visible light, infrared or thermal – to determine different features of a crop.

Farm491 Member AgriSpectral takes drone surveying to new heights

AgriSpectral is a Member of Farm491, an innovative new agritech incubator. AgriSpectral is providing farmers with more accurate drone surveying technology, supporting farmers to reduce costs and effort whilst increasing yields – and ultimately improving bottom line.

Most surveying services can usually take 4-5 snapshots along the electromagnetic spectrum. This provides some information on the crop, but is often limited to identifying where there is a problem which then must be investigated on the ground. Where AgriSpectral excels is by investigating multispectral, hyperspectral and thermal imaging, analysing hundreds of snapshots at a higher resolution to get a much more detailed picture of crop health. This will allow farmers to improve yields whilst reducing inputs.

AgriSpectral is the brainchild of innovator, Guy Picton-Phillips. Guy conducted research into remote sensing in South East Asia, using satellite and aerial image monitoring for a wildlife conservation NGO in East Africa. This expertise and knowledge is now being employed in his own business

One of the most common causes of complaint we hear about at the gym is backpain - it can be extremely debilitating, causing chronic tiredness, depression andirritability. Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves andjoints, which can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. In mostcases it is not serious damage but small muscle strains, sprains or pinched nerves –even so, these can be very unpleasant and the longer these small injuries are leftuntreated, the more likelihood there is of developing a chronic back problem.

Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do to help;

1. Commuting and Computing; your back is compressed when you sit for too longso try to move as much as possible during the day, and align your spine properlywhen sitting.

2. Overdoing it at the weekend; gardening or a game of tennis when your body isn’tprepared are two common culprits. The only preventative solution here is exercise.

3. Absentmindedness; picking something up from the floor, loading the dishwasher– it’s always the simplest of things. Prevent this by teaching your body to engage itscore muscles properly .

If you do find yourself suffering, the first step is to get things checked by aprofessional to rule out any serious damage. After that, a programme of stretching, strengthening and back maintenance can work wonders for long term relief. THEWORST THING you can do is NOTHING!

COORDINATED THERAPIES – Movement based neurological rehabilitation for allParkinson’s Disease – Stroke – Cerebral Palsy –

Multiple SclerosisBased at Cotswolds Health Club, Coordinated Therapies works closely with individuals who have been affected by the changing symptoms of neurological disorders, helping them relearn lost functions through movement.

The foundation of this therapy is that repetitive, highly coordinated movements stimulate the repair or re-organisation of a damaged nervous system. The therapy is tailored to each individual and specifically designed to be low intensity to enable the body to really benefit from the neuroprotective properties of movement.

“What this therapy has done for my husband is nothing short of a miracle. The fact remains that this has now given him so much more confidence, he

has goals he wants to reach and mentally he is so much happier. Please take it from me that John, I and all the family are simply amazed

how he has progressed.I know there is no cure but his quality of life has improved 100%.

To me, his wife, it is wonderful.”Sandra Marshall, February 2015

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!Conversation Partner Scheme

Are you a potential volunteer in the community? The Conversation Partner Scheme aims to reduce the social isolation of people who have a communication problem following a stroke (called Aphasia). Volunteers undertake a short training

course and are then ‘paired up’ with a person with aphasia, visiting their partner in their home once a week for friendly conversation. The opportunity to have a regular chat with someone who understands their communication difficulty is greatly valued by many people with aphasia – volunteers also report gaining confidence, and greatly enjoying the experience. Quotes from previous volunteers:

“I hope my partner enjoys meeting up as much as I do; I know I volunteered for the scheme to help someone else – but I’ve benefited an awful lot as well.”

“I’m really enjoying seeing my partner every week; now we’ve both relaxed and feel comfortable in each others’ company the conversation, and laughter is flowing!”

The scheme is run by Adult Speech and Language Therapy (part of Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust) as an offshoot of Connect, the communication disability network. No previous experience is necessary to volunteer, as training and ongoing support is provided – but being a friendly person with good listening skills is useful.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact Laura Murphy on [email protected] or 0300 422 8105

Pressed Out Ltd has brought a collection and delivery ironing service to the Cotswolds. After cleaning, gardening and car washing the next likely chore to be subcontracted is ironing. Some hate it, some love it and others never do any. Pressed Out say that an easy to access service, prompt collections and returns and a quality finish will establish them as a vital support service, for anyone who values their own time and the luxury of freshly pressed clothes, bed and table linen. Gina, at Pressed Out, is a perfectionist and passionate that quality is always prioritised. She is confident that using the latest steam and vacuum pressing tables will produce a much better finish than anything done at home. Items are hung or folded and looked after right up to the point of return. “We don’t want to see our hard work undone by poor handling, the delivery is as important as the ironing”.By combining old-fashioned customer service with a can-do and flexible approach, Colin, who looks after logistics, hopes to win customers over by making the process as easy as possible. “There is no point in our service creating wasted time for our customers, it’s this we want to save” he says. “We use telephone, text messaging and emails to communicate with our customers, when we are in touch with our customers on a personal level everything runs smoothly – just like our ironing”. Bookings can be made via their website but are also accepted via telephone, text or in person. Some customers prefer to drop their clean washing into their premises at the Cotswold Business Village.

Intelligent transport systems fund – Department for TransportA £2 million fund to allow councils to capitalise on emerging technologies and deliver better journeys for motorists was launched in August.

Proposals include using technology that will allow vehicles to communicate with each other and roadside sensors to provide the drivers with real-time traffic information. Councils will also be able to look at how warnings about changing weather and traffic conditions can be sent directly to vehicles, so drivers can plan ahead – helping deliver quicker, more efficient and safer journeys.

Funding for local projects MARTIN SURL, Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner since 2012, has been funding over 250 projects designed to benefit local communities, many specifically to reduce crime and anti-social behavior. He said: "Any voluntary or community sector organisation or group with a constitution and a bank account can apply for grants to support new and innovative projects, providing they address at least one of my Police and Crime Priorities. . . ."For instance: a computer club scheme run by the county’s Rural Community Council which offers technical tuition to older people. So far, five new clubs have helped over 100 people to use a computer after a small grant from the Commissioner’s Fund to help set it up. The scheme has since attracted other finance and is now self-sufficient, another of the fund’s aims.

“Community safety is not just about policing” Mr Surl went on to say: “Through the Commissioner’s Fund, I have been able to support initiatives to assist the fight against gangs, alcohol and drug dependency and the impact all of those issues have on crime because community safety is not just about policing. It’s about everyone taking responsibility and playing their part in making their neighbourhood as good as they can be”. The Commissioner’s Fund draws on the PCC’s Annual Budget and funding from the Ministry of Justice. It support schemes put forward by local people to make their communities safer. Grants from the Commissioner’s Fund can cover a range of costs such as practical work, feasibility studies, or research projects, group or partnership development, awareness raising, training, equipment and materials, marketing and promotion. If you have an idea you think is worth funding, e-mail [email protected] The closing date for applications is December 1 and the successful projects will be funded from April 2017 to coincide with the new financial year. We’re in good health! In a recent review of public health, the profile for Cotswold District indicates that ‘the health of residents is generally better than the national average’!

Cotswold is described as being one of the 20% least deprived districts/unitary authorities in England, and life expectancy for both men and women is higher than average, regardless of whether they live in the most affluent or the most deprived areas of the District.

The review by Public Health England review covers all areas in England. Alison Coggins, District Cllr for Moreton West and Cabinet Member for Health and Leisure at CDC said: “There are many positives to take from this profile - we have lower rates of hospital stays related to alcohol consumption and self-harm; there are fewer smoking-related deaths and lower than average rates for sexually transmitted infections. Incidences of violent crime, long term unemployment, and early deaths from cardiovascular diseases and cancer are lower than average; while GCSE attainment and breastfeeding initiation are higher.”

“However, there are issues that need to be addressed. The profile indicates that over 16% (110) of Year 6 school children are classified as obese; the rate of people being killed or seriously injured on roads in the district is worse than the national average; and there are pockets of deprivation in what is seen as an affluent part of the country with about 9% (1200) of children living in low income families.

“Working with medical practices across the District and our local authority partners in the County, we will continue to tackle health inequalities and mental health issues, as well as reducing obesity and alcohol-related harm.

“Road safety is also a perennial problem with our vast network of A class and country roads posing substantial risks, and we support all efforts by the police and County Council to reduce accidents.”

Cllr Jim Parsons commented that: “ The clear message is that this is a good location to live, work and play.”

Proposals for new Cotswolds constituencyThe independent Boundary Commission for England (BCE) has published its initial proposals for new Parliamentary constituencies, including the Cotswolds.

Following a decision by Parliament to reduce the number of constituencies in the UK to 600 from 650, and to ensure that the number of electors in each constituency is more equal, the BCE has been asked to make independent recommendations about where the boundaries of English constituencies should be. The BCE must report to Parliament in 2018 and, if agreed by Parliament, the new constituencies will be in use at the next scheduled General Election in 2020.

The rules that the Commission works to are such that wide scale change is inevitable. Under these proposals only 68 of the existing 533 English constituencies remain unchanged.

The current parliamentary constituency known as ‘The Cotswolds’ encompasses the Cotswold District Council area plus the wards of Kingswood, Minchinhampton and Wotton-under-Edge within Stroud District Council. The proposed constituency, also called ‘The Cotswolds’, would comprise the same Cotswold District Council area plus the wards of Minchinhampton and Nailsworth within Stroud District Council. The proposed new constituency would have just under 75,000 electors.

During the 12 week consultation period, copies of the relevant documents for the Cotswolds Constituency will be available for public inspection at the Council’s offices in Trinity Road, Cirencester and the Moreton Area Centre.

Referring to the review as a whole, Sam Hartley, Secretary to the BCE, said: "These initial proposals are just the Commission’s first thoughts – during the next 12 weeks we want people to take a look and tell us what they like and don’t like about our proposals.

“Parliament has set us tight rules about reducing the number of constituencies, and making them of more equal size, and we now need the views of people around the country to help us shape constituencies that best reflect local areas.

“Use our website to tell us what you think, or come along to one of our public events to give us your views in person."

For more information, please see the BCE’s website www.bce2018.org.uk

People can comment on anything from where the proposed new boundary lines are to the names of the constituencies. The consultation closes on 5 December 2016. There will be a further two rounds of consultation in 2017. Following the conclusion of all three consultation periods, the BCE will look at all the evidence received and make final recommendations to Parliament in September 2018. (13 Sept 2016)

Cotswold District Council and Fortis Living are currently completing three new-build 2 bedroom shared ownership bungalows at the Cotswold Edge development in Mickleton. Shared Ownership is a low cost home ownership opportunity for those who want to get a foot on the property ladder but are unable to meet their housing needs on the open market without assistance. People can tbuy a share in a brand new property on a part buy/part rent basis and pay a subsidised rent on the portion that they do not own. The bungalows, built by Newland Homes, are available to applicants who meet eligibility criteria for shared ownership plus the Council’s local connection criteria. Current homeowners, other than existing shared owners, are not normally eligible for shared ownership assistance. Cllr Sue Jepson, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, believes this is an excellent opportunity for those who are less well off to own a new accessible home in a much sought after part of the Cotswolds: “We all know that house prices can be quite prohibitive in parts of the Cotswolds, and I am very pleased to see these more affordable options available in Mickleton.”

“Prices for these bungalows start at £61,500 for a 30% share, which means that, in addition to mortgage payments, a purchaser would typically pay a monthly rent of about £329 plus a monthly service charge between £18 and just under £29. “We are always being asked why more bungalows are not being built to meet growing demand for this type of property, and we are pleased that the developer has responded so positively.” To express an interest in these properties, applicants will need to register on www.helptobuysouth.co.uk. For further details or to find out if you would be eligible contact Fortis Living on:- 01684 579441 / [email protected] To meet the local connection criteria, you must have either lived in the Cotswold District for the past 3 years, previously lived here for a continuous period of 5 years, currently work here and have done so continuously for the past 12 months or have family (grandparents, parents, adult siblings or adult children) who live here and have done so continuously for the past 5 years. Regardless of these criteria, we may also consider those leaving or who have recently left the armed forces.

Council reaffirms backing for flood scheme’s affordable insurance

Cotswold District Council is reminding residents that it fully supports a government scheme which offers affordable insurance for home owners in flood prone areas.

Since April 2016, insurance companies have been working with the government on the ‘Flood Re’ scheme which will run until 2039. The scheme, which is also backed by Gloucestershire County Council, will:

• Enable flood insurance cover to be more affordable for households at highest risk of flooding

• Increase the availability and choice of insurers for customers

• Allow time for the government, local authorities, insurers and communities to become better prepared for flooding, and reduce the likelihood and cost of dealing with it.

CDC’s Principal Engineer has requested information about how completed flood prevention schemes in the Cotswolds will be acknowledged by the insurance industry.

THE ‘FLOOD RE’ SCHEMECDC drew attention to the ‘Flood Re’ scheme when it was first launched earlier this year, and – with the winter season fast approaching - Cllr Sue Coakley, Cabinet Member for Environment, has reaffirmed her support:

“It’s distressing enough for householders when their homes are flooded, but this misery is compounded when they cannot obtain competitively priced insurance options and have to settle for very expensive deals.”

She continued: “The ‘Flood Re’ scheme addresses this problem for many people, including those living in areas in the Cotswolds with a history of flooding.

“Under the terms of the scheme, insurance companies continue to collect payments and deal with any claims arising from policies. However, portions of these payments are redirected to ‘Flood Re’ who take on the flood risk element for a fixed price thus keeping down the cost of the policy.

“‘Flood Re’ receive a levy on all insurance policies which funds their reinsurance scheme.”

The ‘Flood Re’ scheme applies to homes that were built before January 2009 and it is expected to help up to 350,000 homeowners across the UK.  The properties must fall within a Council Tax band and should be insured in the name of an individual.  The scheme will not apply to leasehold flats in

blocks of four units or more, nor is it open to businesses.

North Cotswold Foodbank Fifth Anniversary

The North Cotswold Foodbank provides emergency food parcels for people facing serious financial hardship and struggling to put food on the table.

The Foodbank is part of a nationwide network supported by the Trussell Trust; it is based at Guiting Power. It provides three days’ nutritionally balanced food and support to local people in crisis.

Everyone who comes to the Foodbank is referred by a professional such as a social worker, health visitor or medical practitioner. The majority of Foodbank clients are households that are, or have recently been, in work and around 80% are families with children.

Rhian Morgan, Project Manager for North Cotswold Foodbank, said: “The Cotswolds is regarded as an affluent area, but a lot of people on low incomes find it difficult to put food on the table for one reason or another. Living rurally often means you need a car – an unexpected breakdown or a new tyre can have a huge impact on a household budget, particularly with zero hours contracts or seasonal work. Delays in payment of benefits or allowances can mean families struggle to buy food, and turn to the Foodbank as a last resort.

“We are very grateful for the support given by the public and local community with donations of food and financial giving. This is testament to their willingness to help neighbours who are struggling to make ends meet.”

St Edwards Church, Stow Opens on 14 October

It represents more than 250 charities including Cancer Research UK, Barnardo’s, NSPCC, Alzheimer’s Society and RNLI as well as selling cards from a number of local charities including Winstons Wish and Clic Sargent

Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of different Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers.

Opening Hours:Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10–1 pm. Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm.

In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which charities pay for the production and distribution of their cards and any VAT.

EDITOR’S COMMENT: There were 69 communities to visit for this year’s competition! It was a lot, but it seems impossible to exclude any – doesn’t it? I appreciate that some competitors may not get around them all – however, the good news is that it still isn’t necessary to get all the answers in order to win a prize! So we hope that you will continue to spot those weather vanes, plaques and ‘unusual bits and pieces’ for next year’s competition – we will!

No matter what your standard of photography, from beginner to expert, a good place to practice the art and skill ofphotography is in your own garden. I am certainly no expert, rather a keen amateur with an eye for the beauty of nature all around us. You don’t have to venture far to observe theenormous diversity of nature – all you need is an eye for detailand a desire to notice the little things we so often take forgranted or have no time to see.

Every garden, no matter how small, will present a photographerwith opportunities to observe, practice and learn. You do notneed lots of expensive equipment, but a close-focus lens and atripod will certainly help. My first digital camera was a point-and-shoot Lumix with a close-focus capability. This short article in not about cameras or technique – there are plenty ofphotography magazines that will do that far better than I can. My aim is to stimulate an interest in what to look for in your own back yard. One useful tip though – be as aware ofbackground as of the subject itself.

A good place to start is to make your home patch attractive towildlife. Every garden will have room for a bird feeder or two, andby allowing some wildflowers to grow you will attract all kinds ofinsects. Even a small wildflower patch, just a metre or two, willsuffice to start with.

You may like to start with flower photography. Try to look for anunusual angle, or the special quality of light you get in the hourafter sunrise and before sunset. From early spring through to

something rare or unusual, as I did in August. Whilstphotographing hoverflies I noticed an unusual fly. I took somepictures and sent them to experts for identification, only todiscover that this was the first recorded siting of a migrant fly,Stormorhina lunata, in the UK in 2016. Several weeks earlier I was lucky enough to spot what must surely be one of the mostbeautiful little insects in Britain, a ruby-tailed wasp species,Chrysura radians. At barely 1 cm long, this gorgeous insect wasone of my wildlife highlights of 2016.

So, whatever grabs your interest, why not get out into your gardenand start taking some pictures – there is always something new tosee and photograph.

autumn, your next step might be to watch the many insect speciesthat visit plants in your garden. Capturing these on camera requiresmore skill, but if everything were easy where would be the sense of achievement? Learning more about the diversity of nature allaround you is a journey that, once started, could be the key to alife-long and immensely satisfying interest. Autumn and winterprovide loads of photographic opportunities – leaf colour, aspider’s web covered in dew, or patterns in frost – so you willnever have to pack your camera away for a season.

Did you know, for example, that there are around 9000 species of wasp (many are tiny but 250 species are the larger wasps witha stinger), 250 species of bees and 280 of hoverflies in the UK?Most of us will never see a fraction of all these, but in your owngarden you can make a start – you never know, you might see

A dazzling one-day display of a town’s history drew in a multitude of visitors. Stow and District Civic Society attracted 1,200 people to a ‘pop-up museum’ revealing over 250 artefacts donated by locals, collectors and businesses. One-off Wool, War and Wonders, at St Edward’s Hall, aimed to gauge public support for a permanent collection to celebrate Stow’s rich and colourful past.

“We know we have the history and the items for a museum – now we know we also have the backing and enthusiasm of the whole community,” said antiques dealer Simon Clarke, Society member and exhibition co-collator.

Locals provided glorious memorabilia linked to Stow’s main claims to fame – the popular wool markets and landmark 1646 Battle of Stow - the last major skirmish of the first English Civil War. The ‘Wonders’ rolled in – from eye-catching pottery by former Tiller Girl and ex-Stow Mayor Vera Norwood to tiny 18th century rumbler bells used by horses and carts.

Positive feedback filled the visitors’ book. Resident Neil Halley said: “Been and seen this exhibition – fantastic. I went for an hour and spent two-and-a-half.” Victoria Rogers, museum manager of The Cardiff Story, said: “Happened across this – lovely to see such enthusiasm from so many local people for heritage. There was a lovely atmosphere and a real buzz.” A ringing endorsement was provided by leading UK museum consultant Sam Hunt; he said: “The pop-up museum provided an insight into Stow’s rich history. The case for a permanent museum is a strong one and there’s clearly the enthusiasm to take it forward.”

Society chairman Nigel Surman said: “With this response the Society wants to keep the momentum going to explore the idea and find suitable central and accessible facilities. A number of people have not only just supported the idea of a permanent museum but are prepared to offer help in the future.”

Simon, who catalogued all items with former museum curator and Stow resident Cynthia Duval, added: “After seeing ow professionally the pop-up was run and what we’re trying to achieve, several people said they’d be happy to loan their items permanently. But a dedicated museum needs a lot of thought and careful planning as it’s a major project – it won’t happen overnight. We do need to find a way to fund this project and will be seeking financial help from residents and researching the possibility of grants. Hopefully, from this success, we’d also have County and District Council backing.”

The Story of StowAnother dimension of a future museum would be a collection of audio memories of Stow. The Society is now appealing to local families and friends who have lived in or known the town for many years to make recordings for The Story of Stow project. It will soon organise small informal group meetings and one-to-one discussions at homes or suitable venues. Mr Surman said: “We see this as an enjoyable and invaluable way to preserve the history and stories of our wonderful town.”

For contributions or more information on the museum project visit www.stowcivicsociety.co.uk; contact Nigel Surman on 01451 833783 or Stow Civic Society on Facebook.

The Moreton Show is traditionally held on the first Saturday in September – and this year it was forecast, and became, very wet. However, true to form, it was a resounding success. The event, which always attracts the best-in-show, is held annually on the Batsford Estate. This year the show celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Cotswold Sheep Society and attracted record entries for the competitions with many a winner including:► 13-year-old Joe Neal from Pendock who, with Alice, his Wiltshire Horn ewe lamb, won the Breed Champion, then Native Interbreed Champion before being crowned Supreme Champion. He won £200. ► The Terry Foster Challenge Trophy was awarded to Tingewick Ferdi, a Shearling Ram owned by Davina Stanhope from Shropshire. ► Mrs Stanhope also won Reserve Champion with her Shearling Ewe, Tingewick Chablis. ► The Hereford Cattle Society was celebrating the 50th anniversary of its National Poll Show at the Moreton Show. The title went to Normanton 1 Laertes, from TD&WT Livesey in Leicestershire, a previous winner at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Shows.► The Supreme Champion cow was Frogmore Helen, a Limousin owned by Chris White from none other than Moreton-in-Marsh!► Charlotte Clark won the Ladies Side Saddle competition with her seven-year-old bay mare, Romano Bedriska. ► Joint winners, Angie Thompson on Diploma B and Keith Doyle on Elmo Brown shared the prize money of £880 for the two-fence challenge.Joe, who won with his Wiltshire Horn ewe lamb, Alice took the event in his stride. His fascination with sheep, as well as ducks and chickens began when he was only 6 and he now wants to become an auctioneer and farmer. Lynne Parkes, Livestock Secretary said, “It was wonderful to see a youngster demonstrate so much dedication and expertise.”There were a record 350 trade stands and shopping opportunities in the Food Hall and Home & Garden Marquee, giving plenty of opportunity for visitors to escape the worst of the weather. Winners there included:► Western Arable Services Ltd from Cheltenham, who were named best large trade stand► Keyscape Garden Landscape Design & Construction Ltd from Pershore, who were judged to have the best small stand► Cotswold Curer, who won the prize for the best stand in the Food Hall► The Chairman’s Trophy for “the most meritorious person” was awarded to Gill Skipworth, based in the Home & Garden Marquee

In another win for the event, Butler Sherborn has signed a four-year sponsorship deal with Moreton Show to drive new members to join ‘The Moreton-in-Marsh and District Agricultural and Horse Show Society’. Butler Sherborn, Cotswold property agents, has sponsored the event for the last 10 years, but specific sponsorship of the Members Marquee will enhance the benefits throughout the year, not just in September. Katherine Loyd, Moreton Show Chairman said, “The Society has so much to offer and with this generous long-term support, we will really be able to make a difference. It shows a commitment to the British farming community, for which we are all grateful.”In a final great win, fundraisers on behalf of the Marie Curie Care North Cotswold Fundraising Group were on hand to run the ‘exit collection’ at the Show. A huge thank you is extended to all who gave so generously, as an amazing £2,117.98 was collected. Sarah Taylor, Moreton Show secretary, summed up the weekend, “Despite the weather, the feedback from traders, competitors, sponsors and visitors has been extremely positive.”Plans are firmly in place for the 2017 event, but, if you can’t wait that long, the work of the Society continues with the annual Ploughing Match on Saturday 29 October 2016, which is to be hosted by Ken Brain at Peter’s farm near Broadway Tower. 9th Moreton Beer and Cider Festival Report.Crowds again at Moreton Beer and Cider Festival 2016The North Cotswold branch of CAMRA staged the 9th festival at Moreton Cricket Club on the weekend of 9th/10th September. We were not blessed with continuous sunshine but it was warm and we missed the heavy rain on Friday night which just cleared in time for Saturday afternoon. The festival attracted around 1000 people, many camping on site in tents, caravans and motor homes. The range of 49 beers, were sourced from various parts of the country competing with 19 local beers. The beer styles included pale ale, bitters, porters, stouts and mild. A much broader range of 21 ciders and Perry came from Hereford, Gloucestershire and Somerset chosen by our Cider coordinator James Fry. In total 70 choices, our largest yet.Friday opened at 11am and the crowds built up, enjoying the warm afternoon sunshine tasting the range of quality ale and cider in pristine condition. CAMRA members from near and far turned out in force, many who had attended all previous eight festivals. Afternoon entertainment was provided by bands Mansfield Smith followed by Benny and the Dropouts with Red Shift closing on Friday evening attracting many locals and rounded off a very busy evening.Throughout the weekend local Butcher R & D Walker provided extensive catering from a large airy tent including lamb and pig roasts, burgers, pizzas, faggots and sausages. This proved very popular including breakfasts on Friday and Saturday mornings.More campers and caravans arrived for the Saturday 11am opening with fine rain clearing slowly bringing sunshine and blue skies. Good Intent played a long afternoon set appreciated by our largest Saturday afternoon crowd yet, followed by The Average Wyatt Band for the evening session through to 11pm.The first beer to run out on Saturday at 4-30pm was Alice INN Wonderland Steam Punk Mild 7.1% a traditional mild winning Beer of the Festival brewed by the INN formal micro-brewery at the 5 Bells Wickham Berkshire. Closely followed by Siren Craft Brew’ Proteus 4.2% from Finchampstead, Berkshire. Third was Wye Valley Butty Bach 4.5%.One hour earlier at 3-30pm the first cider to run out and therefore Cider Winner was locally brewed Pearson’s Fruit Cider 4.8% narrowly beating the Gwynt Y Ddragon-Black Dragon 7.2%, reversing the result at our Summer Ale & Steam. Third was Orchard Pig’s Navel Gazer 6%A large crowd on Saturday evening, many dancing to The Average Wyatt Band, almost consumed the remaining stock with 90% sales achieved leaving the remainder for early risers to take away on Sunday morning. The demand for cider continues to surprise particularly during the late evening sessions. Thanks to all our helpers, sponsors and to Moreton Cricket Club for the venue and a welcome to the 18 new CAMRA members who signed up through the weekend. Some of the mysteries surrounding a ruined Jacobean mansion in Chipping Campden may soon be solved with a new Heritage Lottery-funded project. Built in 1612, Campden House was burned down by Royalists during the Civil War in 1645 and although the stone was gradually removed, the gardens and their pleasure buildings

were left almost untouched. The gardens disappeared below the surface and the buildings became derelict over the centuries, until restored by building preservation charity the Landmark Trust in recent years. These buildings (gate lodges, two Banqueting Houses and a little pavilion known as the Almonry) can still be seen next to the Parish Church, but many mysteries remain beneath the surface of this lovely Cotswold site. Two years ago Chipping Campden History Society conducted a geophysical survey of the grounds. The outlines of the house and gardens came up clearly and this encouraged CCHS to apply for Scheduled Monument Consent and a Heritage Lottery grant to do some excavations, including soil sampling. The two-year grant of £26,300 will include professional supervision for the excavations and further research into the history of Sir Baptist Hicks who built Campden House and other notable buildings in the town. The Society hopes that more details of the garden design will be revealed, such as walls and walkways and possible evidence of planting. Members of the Society will have the opportunity to visit other houses and gardens to get an impression of how the mansion looked and what life would have been like in Campden at that time.

The volunteers doing the excavations will be trained and supervised by an experienced archaeologist and Historic England will be taking a close interest. Landmark Trust owns the site and is very supportive of the project. It’s been nearly three years since I last mentioned banks in my articles but sadly the drought has come to an end. A number of small business clients have asked me to mention that their banks have started to put the squeeze on them by

not giving them big enough overdraft facilities for the size of their businesses. This results in the bank returning items as unpaid so that they can charge exorbitant amounts for going into the red. At a time when small, local, businesses could do with a helping hand it is the banks, once again, who are profiting from others misfortune. From the work I do I see the effect this type of decision making has on businesses and I also see that many banks are making little effort to understand the workings of these businesses by enforcing a strict lending criteria.

Another problem for many businesses is that they do not know who to talk to at their bank. Most say that they are fed up talking to a faceless operator at the end of a phone. With online banking some banks are asking for regular updates on business information not once, twice but sometimes three times a year! The consensus is that businesses are happy to provide this information once but shouldn’t have to spend fifteen minutes at the beginning of their working day filling in the same information again & again.

The months are ticking by and a number of tax deadlines are looming. If you have been asked to submit a Tax Return and you wish to file a paper Return you should do this by the end of the month. The online filing deadline is 31st January 2017. If you haven’t received a notice to submit a Tax Return but you have additional income to declare to year ending 5th April 2016, you should either request a paper Return to file immediately or submit the information online by the date requested.

If in doubt about filing any of your Returns, or if you simply want help in organising your business paperwork, then give me a ring. I will be more than happy to help.Robb Eden is based in Moreton-in-Marsh. He can be contacted via e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone 01608 651802.

Florence Foster Jenkins: The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was awful.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Holly Golightly lives in a brownstone on Manhattan’s swank East Side. Totally madcap, she has a partially furnished apartment, owns a cat with no name, gets rid of the “mean reds” by visiting Tiffany’s jewelry store, and is forever misplacing her door key, much to the dismay of her upstairs neighbor Mr. Yunioshi.

Eye in the Sky: A top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya.

Dad’s Army: The story sees Catherine Zeta-Jones play an elegant journalist, who is sent to report on the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon. This is all before MI5 discovers that there is a German spy, hiding in the fictional British town.

Apart from the winning the gold medal, what was the best experience of Rio 2016?It was unbelievable watching the women’s hockey final. I went to see the semi final too and there was a great atmosphere. During the celebrations it was amazing to see history being made in such an incredible final. How will you motivate yourself now after reaching your life goal?I hadn’t really thought about anything past August 13th so I’m currently just enjoying doing nothing and not having to train! I’m pretty sure it won’t be long before I’m looking for the next challenge and I’m excited to see what will come nextWhat’s an average week?An average week is about 200k of rowing with weight sessions. We do 3 sessions a day starting at 7:30am and finishing at about 4pm. Wednesday’s are half days where we have an ergo test. Saturday’s are half days with tests on the water and we have one Sunday off every 2/3 weeks! What sacrifices did you have to make to achieve this? You miss so much; Birthdays, weddings and there are so many friends you don’t see for years – that’s the hard bit. I also think I owe my girlfriend a few weekends! How can you see your life changing from here?I don’t see my life changing too much. I’m still the same person. I know having a Gold medal opens a few doors and I’m looking forward to seeing what lies ahead but what I want in life hasn’t changed - a nice life in the Cotswolds! What is the best bit of advice you would give in life or rowing?Never give up and trust yourself, you know yourself better than anyone else.

“You miss so much.. I think I owe my girlfriend a few weekends!”

Who is your sporting role model? My sporting hero growing up was Ben Ainslie as I was a keen sailor before I started rowing and dreamt about going to the Olympics in the sailing. And Chris Hoy has been a great role model for me for his dedication and commitment to be at the top of his sport for so long. You used to work at the Horse and Groom at Bourton on the Hill – Are they having a party to celebrate? The Horse and Groom were so supportive over the years. I started working there at 15 years old and I was still having shifts when I was 23. They helped fund me through my sailing days and whilst I was at uni. I am every grateful to Tom & Will and all the staff and I’m looking forward to celebrating with them as they have been a big part of my upbringing. If you could compete in any other sport at the Olympics what would it be?That’s easy – Sailing. I was part of the Sailing team in 2008/9 so I knew a lot of the guys out there competing and it was always my dream.Which three people (famous or otherwise) would you most like to invite to a dinner party?Chris Hoy, Harry Redknapp, Taylor Swift

How many of the team are planning on 2020?I’m sure a lot of people will be carrying on to 2020. We have such a strong team and we have a lot of guys who are still young and want more medals. I’m sure those who medalled, like myself, wouldn’t have thought about the future and what it means to win a Gold medal, so I will take some time to decided about Tokyo – 4 years is a big commitment. What is the diet of an Olympic rower? The diet is big! I’m lucky that I can eat what I want and I just need a lot! We need to consume about 6000 calories a day so lots of carbs and protein, but nothing too special - just healthy wholesome meals. At what stage of the race did you know that you were going to win? When we came through half way I knew we had a big lead but anything can happen and nothing counts until you cross the line! What were the Olympics like away from the sports? The Olympics as a whole was amazing. It wasn’t perfect, some of the transport took a long time, but nowhere near as bad as the press made out. I didn’t encounter any problems at all during our competition or the celebrations. How would your best friend describe you?I think they would say I was pretty easy going. I do have many nicknames and can take a joke pretty well which often happens! They call me “The Professional” mainly because I’m relatively capable at a lot of sports (by rowers standard!) so they assume I’m good at everything.. That gets a lot of use!See more at: www.thecotswoldsgentleman.co.uk/matt-gotrel.html#sthash.mfN8ldM0.dpuf
