Contemporary town gardendesign wins RHS Award

“Levels: A Garden come Rain or Shine” in the new RHS“Festival” category highlighted the effects of climate changeand some of the old and new technologies used in gardens –from a solar charged garden table to rain chains used to divertwater from the gutter to a pond. The garden also illustratedhow nature and leisure can complement each other – with aflat screen tv on a wall of birch poles.

The garden was designed with the young urban creative“media” couple in mind to allow a “work-relax” outside space.Circles and spheres complemented by bold uprights providesophistication and inspiration.

Planting was intentionally varied, with loose alliums andgrasses (luzula nivea) counter-balanced by structural box ballsinterplanted with stipa tenuissima (pony tail grass). Under aweeping birch tree luxuriant herbaceous plants includinghosta patriot, white foxgloves and alchemilla mollis (lady’smantle) were used to evoke a serene, peaceful atmosphere. The theme of rain and water drops was reflected in thesinuous curves of the pond, the sensuous stool (marble/wood)and the meandering decking. The painting of the decking intrend-setting grey provided a contemporary edge.

The design highlights how important structure andsimplicity are - the “less is more” philosophy creates a gardenwith visual and textural impact, which can be replicated in thetown gardens of Cheltenham or on a larger scale in themanorhouses of the Cotswolds.

How you BeginA good beginning starts with a focused mind, and there is no better design practice than that of laying out mood boards to get your vision under way. Seeing your influences pinned t o the boards will increase your confidence and skill. Raidfashion and interiors magazines for references – a chanel jacket can be as key an inspiration as a finished room. Put it all on the mood boards, one or more for each room, leave them for a day, then revisit them with a fresh eye. Do not file swatches and samples away – keep the boards on view, as this will move you ever closer to the right d esign d ecisions.

At work in my london studio, where I initiate every design by compiling many mood boards detailing every facet of every room.

ColourI am known for my palette of neutrals – Black, white, cream, grey and taupe. These make the perfect backdrop for any scheme.

A

Subtlety and contrast of tone and texture are the keys to a successful monochromatic scheme where neither the black nor thewhite dominates and there is a natural balance between the two. Adding elements such as the bronze christian liaigre ajoure side table, the wroughtiron Mark Brazier-Jones sera lantern floor lamp and the zebra-skin rug brings highlighting focal points into the design.

Ihave always wholeheartedly enjoyed a monochromatic palette. To my eye, it embraces all the neutral tones between

the opposite poles of black and white, plus the black and the white. This palette has an infinite range of blacks, charcoals, greys and whites, browns, taupes, sands and creams. It forms a limitless variety of neutrals that can be put to work with vibrant tones of burnt orange, luxurious purple, earthy green, glorious red and, sometimes, emperor’s yellow. Dwelling on this locks my mind on to the creation of vastly rich, exciting colourscapes that translate into wonder fully workable, comforting homes. Every one of us sees and responds to colour in our own way. When I am putting colour together, I always start with a natural linen fabric. Instinctively, I will know whether it is a taupe or a sand tone. If it is grey-brown-based, it belongs in the taupe family; if it is

A

IN NEUTRALI cannot separate colour from texture: a natural linen in a sleek, glazed finish will look entirely different to a wide, chunky-weave linen in the same colour.

Black, charcoal, dove grey and silver are as invaluable to me as white, cream, sand and gold, but I am careful to never mix taupe tones with those of sand, as the two are incompatible.

FEATURE | Colour

yellow-cream-based, it hangs with the sand group. Brown is not just brown: it can be bitter chocolate or honeyed oatmeal. White can be blue- or umber-based. Just the slightest shift in tone can throw out the whole, or give me the beauty i seek. I never mix the taupes and the sands together in a scheme. A taupe linen next to a sand linen will look dull. Taupe goes with white, while sand goes with cream. Taupe is happiest with nickel and other silvers, while sand is in harmony with bronzes and golds. That does not mean that bronze and taupe cannot be mixed, nor does it mean that sand will not work with silver. Metallics and reflective materials can be moved between the families of taupe and sand.

Trust your instincts and go with what is beautiful, harmonious and exciting to you, and mix a signature palette to create a personal colourscape vision.

A RICH AND SENSUOUS IMPRESSION (left) is given by the combination of the black velvet cushions and the charcoal damask upholstery in conjunction with the lace banding on the whitelinen cushions. I particularly enjoy this part of the room, as the grouping is reinforced by the powerful photograph of a woman wearing a sexy lace dress – Jessica in Lace Dress, by Louise Bobbe.

MONOCHROME PALETTEI liken the success of a monochromatic palette to that of black-and-white photography, where the serenity of an interior scheme lies in the subtlety and contrast of tone and textural combinations.

MONOCHROME LOVES…A RANGE OF BLACKS, from purest ebony to charcoal, mixed with whites that can have undertones of grey or taupe.

TAUPE PALETTETaupe is the most perfect neutral colour – and there are so many tones that embrace or hover between mushroom and grey-purple, giving you enormous design scope within a single palette. Taupe is neither too warm nor too cool, so its effect on a scheme is that of complete harmony and calm.

TAUPE LOVES …PURE WHITE – paint, plaster, wood or fabric.

TEXTURAL plaster finishes.

BLACK-STAINED WooD – flooring or joinery.

GLASS – clear, as well as dramatic accents of green, purple or red.

SILVER or NICKEL finishes.

STONE MATERIALS that have grey or mocha undertones, such as slate and grey limestone.

A TEXTURAL MIx in the same taupe tone.

TAUPE HATES …BUTTERY YELLOW TONES in any material, hard or soft.

GOLDEN WOODS, such as oak.

TAN LEATHER, as it contains too much yellow.

SANDY-COLOURED STONES – for flooring or walls.

DARK CREAM CERAMICS or any accessories that contain any hint of yellow.

THE ACCENT OF RICH MULBERRY RED (right) in both therough texture of the linen cushions and the smooth texture of the leather ottoman and carpet border lifts the taupe scheme of this living space. The mood board (above) illustrates the bones of the design, showing how it translates into the finished interior with furniture by Christian Liaigre.

PERFECT ACCENTS FOR TAUPETaupe is the perfect foil for rich, deep tones such as mulberry red, purple, burnt orange and chocolate brown – colours that can be injected into a scheme to lift the palette and delight the eye. Taupe is also as happy with bronze as with nickel and chrome, and always enjoys a pure white accent.

TAUPE RULES You can create wonderful interiors using taupe-only materials, as long as you have suffi-cient texture and contrast between the different elements – mix the rough with the smooth, matt with gloss, opaque with sheer.

SAND PALETTEA sand palette is warm, earthy, comfortable and natural. Sand is a yellow-based colour and has an organic ricness of tone that works perfectly in country-style homes. Contemporary designs in sand palettes tend to have a whisper of tradi-tional flair.

SAND LOVES …THE CONTRAST of white and the easy warmth of cream.

SAND-BASED neutral linens and natural but-tery suede.

ALL TONES of caramel, coffee, toffee, rust, and a touch of orange or yellow.

STONES that contain beige, such as French limestone.

WARM METALS, such as verdigris, bronze, cop-per, gold and brass.

MOTHER-OF-PEARL details.

NATURAL HONEY-TONED oak flooring.

SAND HATES …ANY TONE of taupe.

ANY TYPE of wood with a pinkish base.

TOO MUCH black.

BLUE-BASED stones.

METALS in black or copper tones.

THE COMBINATION OF SUEDE AND LEATHER in this sand scheme (right) isin perfect pitch with the textures of the white blinds and the cream shaggy car-pet. The natural white and cream tones in the petrified wood blocks bring in an-other form of texture that is beautifully peaceful in this woodlined living space. It is easy to see in the mood board (left) how this particular yellow brings in just the right amount of light-handed contrast. The quinn sofa by Meridiani is covered in linen, and the IPE Cavalli opium ottomans are upholstered in soft suede. The curving leather Rosetta armchair and Pia hanging light above it are both from Promemoria.

The first step into breathing new life into these Grade II listed cottages was to apply for permission to open up the space to give

them an open plan living area to suit their young family. The challenge was in sympathetically re-organising the property whilst maintaining much of the character of the old buildings. The result was an elegant three-bedroom home that comfortably accommodated Emma and John’s family for over 15 years.

However in 2010, with a husband and three children, an award winning interior design practice and two cats all squeezed in, Emma decided the time had come to convert the barn to create an open plan living space to properly cater for their extended brood. The conventional route would have been to create two stories throughout. Instead, Emma designed a

mezzanine level and stunning full height sitting room that dramatically opened up the space and created a sense of theatre, light and space.

The huge glazed barn doors, rendered limestone fireplace and fitted bookcases with a ladder for access, all create a spectacular setting, which is cleverly offset by the informal layout of the kitchen area. Emma felt that “what makes this house a home is the balance between the space that lets everyone do their own thing and the cosy areas around the woodburners.”

To create the dramatic full height effect whilst

maximising the accommodation Emma raised the roof to its original height and organised the interior so that she could introduce a mezzanine level with a new upper storey for a bedroom and bathroom above the kitchen and dining areas. An elegant dining room helped sympathetically link the two structures, whilst the introduction of a beamed roof, exposed stone walls, and floor to ceiling doors, helped to preserve the character of the barn, whilst introducing the crisp, contemporary feel of the present.

To ensure the building retained its sense of the past, Emma used plenty of local vernacularmaterials, such as Cotswold reclaimed stone that helped retain its historical roots. A less expensive, but just as effective design trick, was her clever use of new wood, which was given a limed effect by colour washing with thinned paint. Used as timber boarding on the kitchen and dining room ceilings, it gave the impression the building had been that way for generations.

Emma uses layering as a practical, functional and effective technique throughout the conversion. The different finishes she introduces such as fabric walls, timber boarding and rendered limestone, all bring a depth of colour, texture, light and character to the overall design. Combined with a play of scale with the full height sitting room, impressive fireplace (designed by John and Emma), and flanking large sofas and beautiful table lamps, the feeling of space and size is energising and enthralling. When combined with the warm, cosy winter sitting room and atmospheric dark hallway, you have an intriguing and engaging space that keeps on surprising.

Her design of the elegant new bedroom and bathroom on the upper storey employs the same technique to beautiful effect. The open rafters create a sense of drama, which is complemented by the modern four-poster bed and large floor to partition-height mirror. The light pours in from the bathroom and surrounding open eaves. Emma’s inspiration for this new addition came from “the wonderful quality of light” that floods the top floor conversion. The freestanding bath, painted in a stylish Moss by Neptune has been

placed between two bedroom windows so they can enjoy the expansive view while bathing.

The palette throughout the house is soft and restful, whilst feeling fresh and modern. The use of a soft wool plaid fabric for the curtains by British design company, Mulberry Home combined with the cushions by De La Cuona add elegance and warmth. Much of the beautiful interior furniture and accessories, including their stunning Chichester Kitchen and Sheldrake Dining Table are part of the sophisticated Neptune Collection, a stylish lifestyle brand run by husband John Sims-Hilditch.

Emma’s approach throughout the conversion is understated and elegant. The overall effect gives the subtle impression that it has been simply stripped back to the bare essentials. It’s a cleverly restrained use of colour, light and architectural detailing that adds drama and ease, glamour and comfort. Not an easy balance to satisfy so completely, but one Emma has done with great success.
