I would like to extend a warm festive welcome to the first Special Edition of ourChristmas Cotswold Luxury Magazine. My sincere thanks goes to all our advertiserswho have supported this new yuletide edition.
Our styling and photographic team travelled to the stunningly quintessential WhatleyManor Hotel for our winter photo shoot. What a delight!
The theme was a ‘London family arrive for a Christmas break’. I hope you enjoy thestory line, as we think the images really reflect the beauty of the hotel. Coupled to thisbeautiful location we included some fabulousmerchandise, clothes, jewellery and theMercedes ML which was used as the arrival and departure vehicle for our ‘family’.
If you are pondering on gifts for him and her we have a plethora of great gift ideas.See pages 32-37.
I really hope you enjoy this edition asmuch aswe’ve enjoyed planning and publishing it.

L uxurious throws and cushions on thebed and sofas will help give the spacethat cosy, winter feel. The textures such
as faux fur and deep velvets, cashmere andwools are great.
Decorating your home at Christmas is agreat way to allow your personality to shineand demonstrate what your own personalChristmas is going to be about – I once made adisplay from candy canes, chestnuts and holly– something really fun and quirky, yet it fittedin with my Christmas and decorationsperfectly.
Decorating the tree is the most importantpart. Personally, I tend to keep it light andsimple, with my Christmas colours being silverand white and lots of fairy lights, to give it thatextra special Christmas twinkle. Why not alsoadd pussy willow to all the branches? This is agorgeous way to make it fan out.
Being warm and cosy in the comfort of your own homeis essential over the festive period, so my top advice isto always keep this in mind whilst thinking about andsetting up new Christmas displays around the house

Remember, fairy lights aren't just foryour Christmas tree. You can use thislighting to create different atmospheres indifferent rooms. Perhaps drape themacross a mantelpiece, or wrap them aroundold urns or statues for a subtle buteffective look. Great Christmas accessoriesand displays like these are a must foraround the house!
One of the main things I also associatewith Christmas is scents and fragrance. Forme, the addition of a scented Christmascandle to the home is vital. Placing themthroughout the house constantly remindsus what time of year it is.
Although I love all the traditionaldecorations around Christmas, I also liketo add a modern spin on things. In thepast, I have painted holly and berries whiteand added them to a bowl of colouredbaubles. This is very eye-catching; as it issomething unique, so don't be afraid to trysomething new! Another greatarrangement is to fill large glass vases withbaubles, I usually do this in colour co-ordination with my tree!
Finally, the dining table! Lunch is aniconic part of Christmas day for us all soit's essential you get your tabledecorations exactly how you want them. Agreat table piece idea is to place a row ofoversized witches balls, foliage, apples, oranges, waxed roses and holly placed

down the centre of the dining table. This iseffortless yet creates a high-impact look.
When you are sitting down to eatChristmas dinner, you want your guest tofeel as though they are in an enchantedChristmas home. Use big bold accessorieson the dining table to help create thisatmosphere. I use big chunky napkin ringson simple linen napkins or a largecentrepiece for the table. If you don't havespace to put up all your Christmas cards, get a big bowl and throw them all in it!
However you spend your Christmasmake sure you're home reflects it, let yourcreativity really shine and don't be afraidto really showcase what Christmas is aboutfor you.

The perfect Christmas Day starter byWayne Sullivan, Head Chef at the Kings Head, Cirencester
500g fresh salmon fillet (skin and fatremoved, you can ask your fishmongerto do this for you)250g hand picked white crab meat2 spring onion2 red chili50g chives25ml olive oil
Curing mix for salmon250g table salt250g caster sugar1 star aniseZest 1 lemon1 red chili, deseeded
1. Using at least a 2” deep plasticcontainer with a lid, mix all of the curingmix together and layer half of the mixat the bottom of the container.
2. Lay on the salmon and ensure it’scompletely flat, now use the remainingcuring mix to completely cover thesalmon so that you can no longer see anyflesh. Place the lid on the container andplace this in the fridge for 15-18 hours.
3. To test the salmon to if it is curedenough, simply press the flesh, if it feelsfirm and a little dry, this is an indicationit is cured fully. If it still feels soft andfleshy, cover the area you haveuncovered and leave for longer.
4.When fully cured, remove the salmonfrom the cure and run under cold freshwater for 5 minutes to remove any curethat may have been left behind. Removefrom the water and wrap in a tea towelto dry.
5. Pick through your crab meat toensure there are no pieces of shell left inthere, season with a touch of sea salt,2 twists of black pepper and juice of halfa lemon, set aside.
6. Finely slice the spring onion and chilion an angle. Take care with the chili notto include the seeds.
7. Unwrap the salmon and slice as thinor as thickly as you like. Arrange on theplate and cover with the crabmeat, again using as much or as little as youlike. Sprinkle on the chopped chives, chili and spring onion, drizzle a littleolive oil and enjoy with some freshlybaked French stick.

Transforming an 11th Century Grade II listed manorhouse into a contemporary family home was all aboutrethinking the space for award winning interiordesigner, Emma Sims Hilditch
Dare toDREAMA Sims Hilditch project
P erched high above the local village andset amongst rolling lawns and 1 acrelake, this charming Dorset manor house
enjoys an outlook almost as spectacular as itshistory. The property dates back to the time of
William the Conqueror, who gifted the manor toone of his favourite noblemen. The buildingliterally has its heritage etched into the verystone, with names and dates carved into windowframes and other unlikely places. When the manor house was recently
purchased, the new owners decided the time hadcome to transform it from its manorial past into

a light-filled, contemporary home.To assist them in striking the right balance
between preserving the patina of the past whilebringing the interior up to date, the ownersturned to Cotswold based interior designer,Emma Sims Hilditch.
Emma is known for her skill in breathing newlife into listed buildings. Hers is an understatedaesthetic that introduces contemporary lifestyleelements in a manner that is sympathetic tohistory and heritage.
“Listed buildings should be more than justtime capsules for period features,” says Emma.
“They should be lived in and enjoyed in a waythat makes sense for contemporary needs butwithout jeopardising their rich character.”
For Emma, the starting point is always to stripback as much as possible in order to get a senseof the bones of a property.
“It’s important to peel away the layers ofprevious decoration to discover the building’s rawmateriality,” she explains.
In the case of this Dorset manor house, shediscovered something of an historical jigsawpuzzle; Norman and Georgian architecturepieced together with beautiful wooden beams,

original stone walls, ancient flagstone floors, large fireplaces and detailed wooden panelling.
“This is where I drew my inspiration beforelooking at how to design the interior in a waythat made sense for my client’s lifestyle and thespace,” says Emma.
The key task was to re-evaluate the existingconfiguration of the rooms, especially on theground floor. As the clients did not want a formaldining room but hankered after a large kitchenand open living area, Emma made some boldchanges.
“The goal was to redefine the space to bebetter for modern living,” says Emma. “By doingaway with the formal dining room, we were ableto relocate the drawing room into this stunningGeorgian wing of the house. We thenreconfigured the old drawing room into a largeopen-plan kitchen-dining room, which gave usfurther scope to create a beautifully functionallaundry and bootroom in what had been the oldkitchen.”
The kitchen was an especially satisfying areato design as it initially presented a number of
challenges in terms of introducing fittedfurniture to crooked walls and uneven floors.Emma’s solution was to design bespoke cabinetsthat perfectly fit the space.
“Sometimes standard cabinets just don’t dothe trick but our team has an ace up our sleevewhen it comes to knowledge and skill in furnituredesign.”
Emma also reconfigured the rooms on thefirst and second floors to create a beautifulmaster bedroom and en suite bathroom thatmake the most of the open beams. The ceilingheight is accentuated by the clever use ofwallpaper to create an airy yet intimate feeling.
The overall result is seamlessly classic yetcontemporary; an aesthetic that Emmacultivates in both her work and personal life.
“I believe that good design is not merely adiscipline but a way of life. It was a delight to beable to apply this philosophy to a building asunique as this.”

Many of us dream of having a kitchen that not only performs as an inspiring cooking
environment, but that combines effortlessly with a workable living space too. A space
that is beautifully crafted to achieve the delicate balance of functionality, comfort and
luxury. This Bower Willis Designs kitchen delivers on all counts, and so much more.
“Multi-function spaces have become the versatile hub of the modern family home,” says Jeremy
Bower. “People increasingly ask us to design kitchens where families can cook, eat and work together.”
And such was the case in this tiny Cotswold village when a client approached Bower Willis Designs
to design a new kitchen and living spaces as part of their home renovation project. Building client
confidence was fundamental to the success of this design since they had experienced problems
with kitchen suppliers in the past at their previous home. “It was with some caution and nervousness
that I approached Bower Willis because of previous experience,” says the client, “but I have nothing
but praise for their professional and business like approach. Nothing has been too much trouble and
they have been a pleasure to work with.”
“It would, I think, be fair to say that I went to them with plenty of my own ideas. I’d had a long
time to consider the type and style of my new kitchen and they responded quickly with a clear
understanding of what I wanted. They share my passion for attention to detail and we worked
together to create a design with which I am now so happy.”

The project involved a series of rooms in the sizeable extension to the back of the property, including
kitchen, boot room, utility room, dining and sitting areas. Each space had its own set of requirements;
the kitchen should of course be functional, elegant and inviting, where the owners could enjoy creating
meals to share with friends and family. “I enjoy cooking,” says the client, “Sunday lunch is a tradition in
our family and I do not use convenience meals. The layout of this big room works really well as all our
everyday requirements are here in one place.”
To enhance the owners’ enjoyment of cooking and entertaining, the kitchen features a wealth of cooking
appliances, including a V-ZUG combi steam oven and induction hob, as well as an Aga, which the client had
purchased previously. “I wanted the work tops and sink to co-ordinate as much as possible with the Aga so that
it became a seamless run of colour,” the client explains. “I also did not want tall cupboards as I felt these would
intrude too much on an area which is also a dining and sitting area. As a practical matter, I’m not very tall and
didn’t want to have to stand on steps to reach things down, and they get more awkward as you get older too.”
Inviting guests effortlessly away from the kitchen is the dining area with elegant mahogany table and
chairs. “I am finding that entertaining is less formal than at our previous house, where we had a separate
dining room, but this informality is very popular now. We have already had a number of friends for supper
and it has worked extremely well.”
Past the table you will find the comfort and relaxation of a stylishly furnished sitting area, lovingly
referred to as ‘the snug’. With inviting sofas, a wood burning stove and bespoke in-frame furniture painted
“They share my passion for
attention to detail and we worked
together to create a design with
which I am now so happy”.

in a muted Period matt grey, the full height bookcases and drawers along one wall balance the room beautifully
with the kitchen. Every detail has been considered, for example, the fireside cupboard nestled in the window
aperture has pocket doors to discreetly conceal the television on an innovative hinge system.
“This project is a great example of combining elements of classic style with modern design,” says Jeremy.
“We have contemporary square edge panels in the boot room and utility, Deco crossover style in the kitchen
and timeless furniture in the sitting room. When considered sympathetically to the fabric of the building, there’s
no reason why traditional and contemporary can’t make perfect design partners.”
Just off to the side of the kitchen sits the hard wearing, functional utility room. Designed in Oak and Graphite
colours to complement the kitchen design, it features an impressive wall of floor to celling cupboards that
elegantly swallow the storage of those less frequently used items, alongside an additional fridge and a full height
freezer. An extra sink, u-shape layout of under counter cupboards and laundry appliances complete the room.
“The boot room at the side entrance to the house posed an interesting brief,” explains Jeremy, “as we needed
to accommodate the gas boiler and electrical tech wizardry housed in the command centre of a contemporary
home.” Fireproofing panels between each unit ensured safety, neatly concealed behind a wall of full height
burgundy units in high gloss finish to create a sleek and stylish appeal.
And what plans to celebrate the coming festivities in their newly designed rooms? “We are hoping to have
the family here with us for Christmas, and of course with two small grandchildren the magic of Father Christmas
will make it so very special.”
