The First Tee of San Francisco

• Unique Youth Development Program that uses the sport of golf to teach at risk youth life and leadership skills

• Two Locations at Harding Park Golf Course and Visitacion Valley Middle School

• Nationally recognized three year coach training program for instructors

• Currently has corporate partnerships with PG&E and Chevron

• Have taught over 10,000 students since 2004

The First Tee at Visitacion Valley

• First of its kind golf learning facility that sits atop a middle school playground. 11 stall driving cage and 100 yd synthetic turf chipping and putting area

• Located in one of San Francisco’s most blighted and underserved communities this helps us to target at risk youth and teach the game and it values to children who need them the most

• Facility serves over 500 school children including special needs students

• We operate a continuous bus shuttle throughout the school day to pick up students at the six schools within a two mile radius of the learning facility

• Afterschool tutoring and jobs training

2010 First Tee By The Numbers• Serve 1300 students

– 800 students at Harding Park and 500 students at VVMS

• Sixty percent of our students were retained from 2009

• Teach 5300 fifth graders in 21 San Francisco Public Elementary schools as part of their PE and Leadership classes

• Have 150 course ready golfers who have mastered goal setting and self management life skill tracks

Success Stories• Thirty students have achieved our highest level of leadership and golf

skills.• They shoot 90 or better for 18 holes and have undergone college and

career training• This represents a 31% increase over a two year period as part of our

focused efforts on impact and quality• Three are designated First Tee scholars

Malik Rahim• Started First Tee in fifth grade• Trying to start a high school team• Spends summers and Saturday’s

volunteering at Harding in am and golfing in pm

• Represented First Tee in SF City Championship

• First time his mom saw him golf, she was really proud

• Will work as a caddy this summer• Maintains a 2.9 GPA

Anthony Esplana• Started golfing last October• Father died when he was young,

mother not actively involved• Brother in juvenile hall, lives with

grandparents• Practices seven days a week, in the

dark and rain• School attendance has dramatically

increased and discipline issues declined

• Carries a 2.5 GPA, up a point since October

• Six siblings cheered him on at SF City Championship in his first tournament

• First time they had ever been to a golf course

2010 Highlights• Exposed 5000 SFUSD

students to golf through their physical education classes.

• Provided daily golf tutoring and life skills instruction to 20 young men from Bayview/Hunter’s Point.

• Started the Visitacion Valley Golf Team 15 of whom were golf course ready in 8 months.

• Started a girls only group for 12 young woman from Bayview and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods
