GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

FROM OUR PASTOR

UPDATES Today I should be returning from retreat in Berryville, Virginia at a Benedictine monastery that was built on a Civil War battle site. This is being written on December 31, so I’m anticipating that a week of silence (January 7 – 11) except for Mass, Morning Prayer (Lauds) and Evening prayer (Vespers ) will have done me a world of good. So, when you see me tell me I look rested and holy. Six months ago, the only thing on my January calendar was a week’s vacation with a couple Erie priests somewhere sunny and a couple hundred miles from our sister parish, St. John the Baptist in the Diocese of Merida. My retreat was schedule for September at the same time as Msgr. Malene’s over at Villa. Then the featured speaker/retreat master bowed out, catching the retreat planners off guard. No disrespect intended, but when the only person they could get on short notice was our retired Bishop Trautman, it was my turn to back out, because I really wanted to hear the other guy, Bishop Kicanis. Technically, I needed to schedule the retreat in 2018, and the nearest I could get was last week, So now I’m up to two weeks away in January. Turkey day came last month and our sister Gayle (Doctor Whitman) surprised us by announcing she was flying us all out to Honolulu and putting us up on Waikiki Beach for a week while she’s out there at a conference. So what’s the only answer possible when asked if you can go to Hawaii for a week all expenses paid? Of course! I knew you knew the right answer. Mrs. Whitman didn’t raise a dummy! The timing is a bit unfortunate, though; I return on February 3 from Mexico and leave for Hawaii on February 6. So, in the space of about 5 weeks, I’ll be away for almost three. What a life, huh? I’ll be gone for two weekends, one in January and one in February. Msgr. Caz Bogniak is coming in January and Fr. Jason Glover from KCHS will be here February 9 & 10. We will schedule Communion Services for the weekdays and I’ll arrange for an area priest to cover funerals, if necessary. Just a word about the last several bulletins. In order to give the staff off from Christmas Eve thru January 1, Deb and I have to crank out about five bulletins a couple weeks before Christmas. That might explain why some of the entries don’t seem timely. This bulletin should be the last one written so far in advance. Thanks for understanding.

Have a good week! Fr. Glenn
