The Vicar writes: ‘Would you like a few kidney beans?’ has been a common question in recent weeks. The kidney or runner bean is a great a favourite, and a vegetable that even children and teenagers will eat. Some years they hit top gear and produce in abundance, and this year was one of them. So the reply to the offer of the beans is often ‘We’ve got quite a few of our own, thank you’. Now what else can you do with the beans? Yes, beans have done well, the potatoes are enormous and it all bodes well for winter. When you think back to the early months of the year – for instance roads blocked with snowdrifts on Palm Sunday, then any growth seemed a miracle. It all points to us having had good summer, with warm sunny days. The cereal harvest is another marvelous transformation. The winter cereals were sown into wet, cold and heavy soils. They came through and were patchy going into the cold of the winter and those blankets of snow. When the snow peeled back, the fields still looked patchy, but the plants have a great ability to compensate and more heads appeared. So while we didn’t see a record crop, it was better than expected and harvested in good condition. I don’t know what the relationship is between God and our weather. However, I think that it is more complicated than some of our harvest hymns suggest. While I like to sing ‘he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine and soft, refreshing rain’.in ‘We plough the fields’. It’s painting an idyllic, romantic picture when our weather actually has extremes. Think about the depth of snow last winter, the series of flooding incidents along the Severn Valley and elsewhere and think about where they come from. Would a loving God inflict the extremes on us, and to what end? I do believe that it is through the goodness of God that we have a harvest to be thankful for. Perhaps we need a perspective on

harvest that takes in a number of years – remembering the difficult years alongside the easier ones, the years of plenty alongside the years of shortage. Overall, God’s care for us provides enough, year in and year out, to satisfy our needs. There is though, a further factor. Science is leading us to conclude that we can and do affect the climate. Climate change has dropped from the front pages, but the prospects for the world haven’t changed. We may have stopped talking about it, but change is continuing while we remain silent. Each year someone will ask me to arrange the weather for a certain event, to which a reply can be that I’m in sales, not production. I thank God that he has given us predictable weather patterns and another harvest. Will you join me in that? Peter Dakin Harvest in Hilderstone – Sunday 6th October Harvest is to be marked this year by two different but traditional events. On Sunday 6th in the morning there is a Harvest Family Service at 11.15am, at which harvest gifts are welcomed. Then, on Monday 7th at 7.30pm there is the Harvest Supper and Auction of Produce at the Village Hall. Through Bill Parry’s skilled auctioneering the gifts that decorated the church on Sunday and those that were presented during the service, are turned into cash as willing buyers compete for things locally grown or locally purchased. The money then goes to help the church, the Christmas party and people overseas through a missionary agency. Tickets for the Harvest Supper are priced at £5.50 for adults and £2.50 for children, and are available from Philip Davies (01889 505725) or Sue Stubbs (01889 505203) Some thank yous: Thank you for helping the finances In recent months a number of people have been invited to consider making their contribution to the church finances by Standing Order directly into the church bank account. It helps
both donors and the church to plan their finances. And it saves that horrible rustling around in a pocket as the collection plate draws near. We are very grateful to those who researched the initiative and especially to those whose direct giving helps boost the total given. We would still value more direct givers, so contact Phil Davies (01889 505725) for more information. Thank you for cleaning and clearing A small group of people have recently cleaned the inside of the church, clearing the cobwebs as well as some dirt. Thank you for your efforts, which included spotting a chair with woodworm. The chair was quickly banned from the church building. and also Thank you to the group who have been doing the clearing and tidying in the churchyard. The churchyard has looked very good this summer.

This month we have to report that two further problems have occurred which will need to be financed. The central heating has sprung a leak in the large pipework and will need fixing before the cold weather comes. Unfortunately it is not just a case of getting a domestic plumber in to do the work as it is the large industrial pipe that needs to be repaired. The second problem is that only half the lighting can be used in the main aisle due to the fact that the contacts on the existing lamps have now become corroded and have to be replaced. The heating and lighting problems are in addition to the heavy expenditure last month of £450 due to having to have one of the beautiful old oak trees attended to due to wind damage. We have been advised that the tree will be in good order for the next 100 years! If you can help financially in any way at all to help defray some of these costs then please talk to the Treasurer or a member of the PCC. Roy Clark – Vice Chairman of the PCC !

GEESE Autumn colouring in October lanes is glorious. Trees are so beautiful in their autumn gowns of pale yellow, deep gold, copper, red or purple. At this time of year the leaves begin to change as the vital fluids they have been manufacturing seep back into the trees. The green colour recedes and the brilliant colours are left.
I love watching wild life in the fields and by brooks and streams. However, I also love watching the wild life to be found on our many ponds and lakes. I always look up and smile when I hear the loud honking of Canada Geese flying overhead in their V-formation. However, it was only when our Canadian friends were visiting that I began to admire them. They told me how, when the leading Goose was tired, it would drop back and another Goose would go forward to lead the group. Also if one Goose was ill or injured and dropped to the ground another one would follow and stay with it until it was better or died before joining another V-shaped formation. I remember thinking that is what family and friends are for.
So I am pleased to see a huge flock by a lake. Some are on the water; others on the grassy lakeside. Although I try hard not to surprise them some begin to take off from the grass when I stop to look.
Canada Geese were first brought from North America to Britain in the 17
th Century to live in parks. They were too tame to become a
shooting sport and eventually many left the parks to flourish in the countryside. In America they are still birds that migrate to wintering grounds. Here they stay all year round. Canada Geese are very large. They have black necks, beaks and legs. Cheeks, throats and sterns are white. Body and wings are brown, paler underneath. Honking is the way Canada Geese communicate with each other while flying, starting while the group is on the ground. They fly from their feeding areas to roost together in a safe place. Honking is very loud during the mating season. Their nests are hollows in the ground at the edge of lakes or on islands. They are lined with grasses, leaves and feathers. The females sit on the nest to hatch their five or six eggs, lowering their heads to become less conspicuous. The male life-long partner stands on guard near-by. The green-yellow goslings can swim when hatched and fly after nine weeks. They stay with the family until the following Spring.I stand and admire the spectacular Autumn flock of Canada Geese.

Hilderstone WI thoroughly enjoyed their July meeting, when
three very talented members, who make up the `Shalyn`
Beading group, ran a Beading Workshop. All the ladies present
were intrigued by this hobby , & they were able to take
home some beautiful gifts , crafted by their own fair hands ,
for family members & friends. Our sincere thanks to Lynda,
Alison & Shirley!
We celebrate our 79th Birthday on Tues Oct 8th. Party
commences 7.15pm. Our President will present her `Desert
Island Disc` choices, after our meal & the cutting of the cake.
The Women's Institute organisation is based on the ideas of friendship,
truth, tolerance and justice. Formed in 1934, Hilderstone WI continues to
be a friendly, welcoming group for members who live in the village and for
those who live outside it. Committee meetings are held on the first Tuesday
in the month and the WI meetings are held on the second Tuesday, at 7.30
pm in the Village Hall. Our Committee is comprised of: President: Pat

Best Kept Village Results
Great news! Hilderstone has been awarded Third
Place in the Stafford District, Small Village Category this year! The judges’ report will be
issued in the autumn and this should indicate how
the village can aim to improve next year.
A big thank you goes to the pupils of Green Lea
School who provided the fantastic posters that
were displayed in the bus shelters. These will have made a very positive impression on the judges.
Thanks also to all the new volunteers who joined the Best Kept Village Group this year. They have
worked hard in the public areas of the village,
particularly in the churchyard where monthly group tidying sessions are held. Bill Holmes who carries
out maintenance work for the Parish Council, has
again gone that extra mile to ensure that the village
looks well maintained, especially the bus shelters, notice boards, benches and flower boxes. The
regular volunteer litter pickers have continued to
carry out sterling work and their dedication makes a massive difference to the general tidiness of the

Village Treasure Hunt held in
September
On behalf of the village the
Parish Council would like to
thank Jennifer and Phil of
Highfields Farm who organised the treasure hunt and provided
refreshments at the Farm
afterwards. They also very kindly donated all the monies
raised from the treasure hunt,
to church funds. It was encouraging that fourteen
groups took part and
thankfully apart from a couple
of sharp showers the weather was good. It is hoped that this will become an
annual event and that more groups will participate
next year.
Thanks also goes to Peter Brereton who diligently
helped all the participants cross Sandon Road from
Dingle Lane in safety for a couple of hours. Everybody appreciated this help and admired his
improvised ‘lollipop’, fashioned from a red snow
shovel !!
Noise Nuisance
There has been a spate of dogs barking and
burglar alarms ringing for no apparent reason. Both
of these noise problems have been happening on a regular and persistent basis. If you have a burglar
alarm, please ensure that it is checked and
serviced on a regular basis to avoid it going off without good reason, especially if you are away
from your property. Dog owners should ensure that
their dogs are not allowed to bark persistently either inside or outdoors. If you are affected by
any noise issues, you should preferably speak to
the resident concerned in the first instance to see if
it can be stopped. If the matter cannot be resolved, you can refer the problem to the Environmental
Health Department at Stafford Borough Council.

Fracking
There has been much in the news recently about
the potential increase in fracking sites in the UK. Staffordshire County Council has released a
statement to say that “there are currently no
planning applications or sites permitted to carry out
exploration or development of on shore oil or gas using fracking techniques in Staffordshire”.
Permission was granted around three years ago for
coal bed methane extraction at a site near to Balaams Lane, Spot Gate. To date, the contractors
who have been given permission to explore the
Spot Gate site have not given notice of when the works will start. The planning permission for this
site will lapse on 12th November 2013 however.

Harvest Festivals from England
English Harvest Festival
In England the harvest festival is called the harvest home. This festival usually takes place during September. Offerings of fruit and vegetables are placed around the altar for a thanksgiving service that would make sure there was a good crop for the next year. After the service the offerings are
given to those less fortunate.
The Harvest Home festival is held at the end of September once all harvesting of all crops has been finished. People take great pride in decorating the churches and often keep the best of the harvest for this
festival.
The altar in the churches is decorated with vases which hold autumn leaves, berries and flowers and special tables are set up to hold the offerings that people bring. There are pumpkins, cabbages, baskets of fruit and vegetables of all kinds. Sometimes the window ledges are used to display
the results of harvest.
People also come to church to say prayers of thanks and sing hymns. At the end of the service the produce that has been left as offerings are each blessed and sent to hospitals for the sick and needy. Also in some places at the end of the day there is a Harvest Home supper after which people dance
and have a band play.
History tells of how villages belonged to rich landowners as part of their estates and that the villagers were employed to farm and cultivate his
gardens.
The harvest festival was held as a way of thanking the gods for a good harvest. It was also a way of thanking his employees for all their hard work.
The harvest was supplied by the landowner.
In North Shields for thanksgiving it is called the "Blessing of the water or Boats" the reason for this was they were relying on fishing for their livings. The boats are blessed in open air service. While in other places the
churches are decorated with fishing equipment.
Also in parts of England they celebrate Lammas also known as the Celebration of Bread, the preparation of bread as a primary staple is a ritual

in and of itself. It is the time of year when they celebrate the passing summer and lean into fall, storing their goods and thanking the
Gods/Goddesses for a plentiful harvest and asking them for a safe winter.
In village churches in England sheaves of wheat were offered alongside leaves on the altar, and parishioners brought their own consecrated bread
back home.
Another traditional Harvest festival celebrated every year in churches,
chapels and school was only started in 1843.
The person who is said to have restarted the celebration was Vicar Robert Stephen Hawker of Morwenstow in Cornwall. He invited all his parishioners
to gather together to receive the bread of the new corn.
This event drew a large congregation who found their church decorated with
fruit and flowers for what was the first modern Harvest Festival.
Today’s harvest is celebrated on a Sunday during the main service of the day. The date for harvest festival is set well in advance instead of waiting for the last of the harvest to be bought in. This is because it is no longer labor intensive with even the Children helping to gather the crops as machinery
has taken over.
Often there is a harvest supper the night before when all the parishioners bring a dish to share with others. The church is not so highly decorated today, flowers, fruit and vegetables still dominate the displays but you will
not find any words created out of them.
English Catholics celebrate the Feast of Saint Martin of Tours or as it is also known Martinmas, held on November 11. This feast was held to honor the Hungarian saint who, as legend goes, hid in a barn when he heard he had been appointed a bishop and believed he did not earn such an honor. A honking goose as legend goes was to reveal his hiding place, so roast goose became a traditional dish for Martinmas feast, along with wine made
from the grape harvest.
As well the day held elements of the Halloween tradition with children
marching in parades carrying homemade lanterns.
Also in England they hold a festival known as St. Michael's Mass or Michaelmas and it is held on September 29. Fairs with markets and games, especially horseracing are associated. It is associated with the color gold, all
the harvest colors, the harvest and bounty of the land, and the sacred king

Paddy Stanley. It is with much regret that I notify you of the death of ex-Parish Councillor Paddy Stanley who died on Thursday 11th July 2013 after a long illness. Paddy's funeral was held on Monday 22nd July 2013 at Stafford Crematorium at 1.30pm. Paddy's daughter forwarded me this information. Paddy was known to many in the village as a real gentleman and will be missed walking his dog around the village and Hilderstone Walkway. He was one of the instigators of the Walkway and made it his mission to plant wild flowers around some of the lanes making up the 1 mile route of Cotwalton and Dingle Lanes. Paddy served on the Parish Council for a number of years and retired in 2007. There is also a bench in the Children's Play Area to mark his service to the Parish. Thank you for cleaning and clearing A small group of people have recently cleaned the inside of the church, clearing the cobwebs as well as some dirt. Thank you for your efforts, which included spotting a chair with woodworm. The chair was quickly banned from the church building. and also Thank you to the group who have been doing the clearing and tidying in the churchyard. The churchyard has looked very good this summer.
