The Vicar writes: At the end of our garden, on the other side of the stream, theres a grass field belonging to the farm. Each year we have seen cattle graze the field, and enjoyed the view – its like having a big garden but not having to do the work of cutting the grass. It’s a field that other residents of Tudor Hollow appreciate as well. On 1st April a machine appeared in the field that looked like a tractor going backwards with long arms coming out each side. It was a very wide sprayer and the field was being sprayed with weedkilller. By 15th May the field had been ploughed, worked down and was ready for some fertiliser and seed. Within 10 days the crop was through, forming faint green lines. The lines grew bolder day by day as the crop of maize grew and grew. Its been a good year for maize. It loves the sun and with some rain its been ideal growing weather. You can almost watch it grow. Meanwhile, on the political level, nations are in dispute. There’s an ongoing debate about the Ukraine and possibly other states becoming more aligned with the EU instead of Russia. That debate then breaks out into violence with an invasion by a small army. An airliner is shot down, with the blame being attached to the ‘new’ military presence. Then at the beginning of September, Russia declares trade sanctions against the west. What are the sanctions? They include a year long ban on imports of cheese, butter and milk products. This maize continues to grow, with the cobs filing and developing. It will be the end of September or even later that the maize will mature.and be harvested. Harvesting will be an expensive job, so the costs of production go up. But, the dairy companies, who buy milk and turn it into butter and cheese, are being cautious about price. Many are predicting a

drop of 3p/litre before Christmas, while others talk of 5p/litre. The problem is partly due to cows giving around 8% more milk, not only here but across Europe. On top of it comes the Russian action, which has so far led to a reduction in commodity prices of 10%. What can a farmer do? It’s difficult to reduce the number of cows in the herd, and you can’t feed them less. But what you want is to produce as much milk as you can in order to sell more litres.even if it makes the situation worse. Some commentators see this series of price reductions as critical. If the reduction is 5p/l it will increase the number of dairy farms in financial difficulties. In many cases it will not be the farmer’s fault, but the result of good growing conditions and international politics. In any business there will be threats to its viability, but the dairy industry has been affected by two factors that it couldn’t have predicted. So the maize grows on, and during the winter it will be fed to cattle. It was the right crop to grow this year. How the area’s milk producers survive the coming months, only time will tell. On Sunday 5th in the morning there is a Harvest Family Service at 11.15am, at which harvest gifts are welcomed. Then, on Monday 6th at 7.30pm there is the Harvest Supper and Auction of Produce at the Village Hall. Through Bill Parry’s skilled auctioneering the gifts that decorated the church on Sunday and those that were presented during the service, are turned into cash as willing buyers compete for things locally grown or locally purchased. The money then goes to help the church, the Christmas party and people overseas through a missionary agency. Tickets for the Harvest Supper are priced at £6 for adults and £2.50 for children, and are available from Philip Davies (01889 505725) or Sue Stubbs (01889 505203)
Hilderstone Fair: Saturday 12th July The Summer Fair was held on 12th July at Lower Farm which was a new venue for the event. The venue was very visible to passing traffic and it was just a short walk for many village residents. Thank you to all who helped and took part, and especially to Philip Davies who was the planner of a good day. Let’s hope it will be bigger next year as there was plenty of space in the field.
Commemorating the Centenary of the Outbreak of the Great War: The start of the Great War was marked in our services on 3rd August Numbers in the congregations were good and the reaction to the morning’s events was that we had done something appropriate. Much of this project has been promoted by Roy Clark, to whom we are very grateful. Roy drew together a number of people into a working group who then developed the weekend’s activities. The group produced artwork and the Saturday afternoon event in addition to their contribution to the church service. We are very grateful to all of the working group,, thank you .

Hilderstone Parish Council Best Kept Village Results Hilderstone has been awarded a Highly Commended Certificate this year, which is a little disappointing after the second and third places achieved in the last two years. The standard of competition must have been very high as the Parish Council felt that the village was looking extremely attractive and tidy during the judging period. The Best Kept Village volunteers have worked hard again throughout the season and it is hoped that they will not be discouraged by the result. Thank you to all the villagers that have helped with the competition by volunteering or by ensuring that their front gardens and floral displays were maintained to a high level. A big thank you again to the pupils of Green Lea School who provided the wonderful posters that were displayed in the bus shelters. Even though the village didn’t win as hoped, entering the competition definitely helps to keep the village well maintained and also

fosters a sense of community pride. The judges’ report will be issued soon and this should indicate how the village can aim to improve next year. Children’s Poster Competition for Speed Awareness Campaign The village Speedwatch group needs some more posters to remind drivers that driving too fast through our village is dangerous and that they should keep their speed to 30 miles per hour or less. The posters should be in colour, be on an A4 sized piece of plain paper and portrait. Please put your name, age and address on the back of the poster and send it to Helen Howie, Parish Clerk, 216 Grindley Lane, Blythe Bridge, ST11 9JS by Wednesday 22nd October 2014. The posters chosen to be displayed by the judging panel will be enlarged and re-printed on plastic boards. There will be a W H Smith voucher prize for the best three posters.

CHRISTMAS CAKE
Ingredients
Zest and juice of 1 orange and 1 lemon
1 ! - 2 lb of dried fruit, consisting of:
8 oz sultanas
8 oz raisins
12 oz mixed dried fruit
2 oz glace cherries
2 oz candied peel
The cherries and candied peel are optional depending on your personal preferance, also you could
substitute 2 oz of nuts for the peel, as long as you have 2 lb of fruit. It is entirely your choice what
to put in.
2 - 4 oz ground almond
8oz soft brown sugar
8oz best butter
1 tablespoon black treacle
4 large or five medium sized eggs
12 oz self raising flour
" teaspoon cinnamon
" teaspoon mixed spice
" teaspoon nutmeg
sherry and brandy –any other spirit you wish to use.
Method
Weigh out the dried fruit, cherries etc. Put into a good sized bowl.
Grate the zest of the orange and lemon and squeeze the juice.
Put the fruit juice into a measuring jug and make up to 14 fl oz with the sherry and spirit of your
choice.
Add the liquid along with the zest to the bowl, mix and cover with cling film.
Stir daily for one week.
Put butter, brown sugar and black treacle into a bowl and beat until soft and fluffy.
Add the beaten egg gradually, mix in a little of the sieved flour if the mixture begins to curdle.
Add the spices to the flour and sift into the mixture then add the almond, mix thoroughly but
gently.
Finally add the fruit and alcohol to the bowl and mix until well blended.
Line a, 9” by 3” deep cake tin with a double layer of brown paper and then a double layer of non-
stick baking parchment.
Pour the mixture into the tin, smooth around.
Cook for 1 hour on the middle shelf, gas mark 3 / 150 ºc
Then turn down to gas mark 2 for a further hour at this point check the cake in the middle with a
skewer or knitting needle if it is still wet in the middle it will need an extra half an hour at gas 2.
When cooked leave the cake to cool before unwrapping the lining paper.
Wrap in cling film and store in a cool place until you are ready to marzipan.

DON’T LET CAR THIEVES LEAVE YOU
FEELING COLD
Police are urging people not to leave their cars unattended on
the drive while defrosting them as the weather begins to get
colder. With colder mornings and hard frosts fast approaching, drivers
are being warned that thieves will be on the look-out for cars
which have been left unattended with their engines running by
their owners.
Between October and March there is quite often an upsurge in thefts of vehicles from driveways.
Police are also warning that some insurance companies will not
pay out if cars are stolen when the keys have been left in the
vehicle with the engine running. Staffordshire Police have also issued advice on some simple
crime prevention measures to protect vehicles:
! ensure your vehicle is securely locked, including passenger
doors and sun roof, and that alarms or immobilisers are switched on
! remove all belongings from the vehicle – even a bag of rubbish could convince a thief there is something worth stealing
! take your sat nav with you remembering to remove the cradle
and wipe any sucker marks off the dashboard or windscreen. Leaving the cradle in place tells the crooks that the sat nav
might be in the glove box or boot
! park in a garage if you have one or park under street lights if
possible
! remove work equipment from your vehicle
! keep your car keys in a safe place so if someone breaks into your home they cannot steal your vehicle as well. !"#$

There are occasional reports of thefts from vans and cars where

Dairy farmers must be paid more for their milk

The UK Government must do more to protect the interests of British dairy
farmers. The low price of milk is forcing extremely hard working farming
families in to poverty and increasing the dependence on antibiotics used with
animals that will have a devastating affect on the industry. If the price of milk is
not increased soon then the UK will suffer a shortage of supply and thus pay
more in the long-term.

COUNTRYSIDE WATCHER – OCTOBER THE COMMON FROG
Hedging and ditching is still going on in the October lane. Through the trimmed hedges and across the dying vegetation on the verge, Badger and Fox tracks are once again clearly seen. A Red Admiral Butterfly flutters along the hedgerow.
The grass in the corner of a field has been cropped short by cattle. All that is left are dark green clumps of Soft Rush and the brown seed spikes of the Greater Plantain. The Ferns on the ditch bank are turning brown. Across an uncut hedgerow lies a brown net of shrivelled Cleavers.
On one evening walk I see a Frog hopping along in the grass. As it is October I wonder if it is on its way to the pond in the field behind the hedge or looking for a wet, muddy ditch. Common frogs are most active at night but as autumn days grow shorter there is not much food around for them. Frogs rarely move around in cold weather. When Winter comes they hibernate. Making sure that they do not freeze to death, they sleep in holes in the mud at the bottom of ponds or ditches. Sometimes a group of Frogs sleep together in a large pond hole. They also sleep under rotting leaves, logs or stones. Amazingly, Frogs can breathe through their skin as well as lungs
Common Frogs have a smooth skin that can be grey, olive green, yellow or brown with many dark blotches. They have a dark stripe around their eyes and ears. Another amazing skill frogs have is to change their colour to either light or dark to match their background. Frogs have long, sticky tongues. With them they catch and eat insects, snails, slugs and worms.
Noisy, croaking frogs can be heard in the Spring. The longer days stimulate them to reproduce so they attract the females. The adults gather in shallow ponds where the females are attracted to the noisiest males. There they mate. The female lays her eggs in the shallow water, the male fertilizes them and the eggs sink to the bottom. The jelly round the eggs swells and the familiar frogspawn floats to the top. After about two weeks the tadpoles hatch out of the jelly and swim around. After about eight weeks the legs grow. Tadpoles can then breathe, so rise to the surface for air. About three months later they become froglets and hop on to land, able to look after themselves.
I wish the little Common Frog a safe journey to its place of hibernation and wonder if I might see it again next February.

World War I Sing Song Saturday August 2nd
2014
A sunny day brought out a number of willing vocalists
to the village hall, ready to air their voices singing a
number of well-known songs from the First World War.
A wonderful old world tea-room atmosphere was
created by the beautiful array of cakes and scones. The
tinkle of tea-cups ensured a relaxed feel to the
proceedings. Chorus’s grew louder with the increasing
confidence of the singers and the chance to reflect on
the significance of the words for the soldiers of the time
was not lost. A total of £125 was raised, £100 for the
church and £25 for the village hall. A big thank you to
the many people who contributed their time and
expertise to make the afternoon a success.

Hilderstone Fair: Saturday 12th July The Summer Fair was held on 12th July at Lower Farm which was a new venue for the event. The venue was very visible to passing traffic and it was just a short walk for many village residents. Thank you to all who helped and took part, and especially to Philip Davies who was the planner of a good day. Let’s hope it will be bigger next year as there was plenty of space in the field.
Commemorating the Centenary of the Outbreak of the Great War: The start of the Great War was marked in our services on 3rd August Numbers in the congregations were good and the reaction to the morning’s events was that we had done something appropriate. Much of this project has been promoted by Roy Clark, to whom we are very grateful. Roy drew together a number of people into a working group who then developed the weekend’s activities. The group produced artwork and the Saturday afternoon event in addition to their contribution to the church service. We are very grateful to all of the working group,, thank you .
