EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL My garden is alive with birds, many busy making

nests and preparing for the spring. Just a short while ago I was

watching my son’s new born lambs through my kitchen window, playing in

the field behind my home. There is a smell of new life in the air; it gives me

such a lift.

It would be so encouraging to see the village win the ‘Best Kept Village’

award as it would to see an increasing congregation. Please let us make that

extra effort this year. It would be so much appreciated.

I am looking forward to all the different events that are happening in the next

few weeks and don’t forget, this year is our Scarecrow Weekend - more

information inside.

I would also like to pass on my personal thanks to all those who help me

with the Newsletter, especially the unsung heroes who deliver it to your

doors whatever the weather. N.B. the newsletter can be viewed on the

village website. Sue

The Vicar writes: I wish that I’d have kept count of the number of recent conversations that have gone something like this: ‘I believe that congratulations are in order’ Well, thank you (At this point I’m hoping that the congratulations are for my becoming a prebendary. But somehow ..) ‘Of course we do a lot of recycling ourselves, our bins are always tidy. But we do have a difficulty in knowing what to do with ….’ Yes, the recycling reverend is being consulted again. As a publicity strategy Stafford Borough Council have certainly got their moneys worth (£120 - it was a rollover month!). It started with Radio Stoke and then was picked up as a headline by the local press and now it still appears, 2 months later. The amazing thing is that people ask me all sorts of questions and expect me to be able to answer all their recycling enquiries. I think that it shows how much affirmation we need, and how quick we are to label someone with a tag that reads ‘expert’. While it’s pleasant to be regarded as an expert, my knowledge is only superficial. What I really look for, maybe even long for, is for folks to come and ask me questions about the Christian faith. Some of the answers are still just relating my experience of God. But others will be backed up by a knowledge of the theories of the great theologians and bible translators. Our own experience of God is a treasure to share with others. That experience is the key that unlocks a lifetime of a living faith rather than faith being about observing a rule book and being scolded when we fail to keep those rules. Jesus came to set us free from the burdens of sin, and it happened on the cross. How? Talk with me about the theories of the atonement when we’ve got a little while available. What, then, about the environment and recycling? There aren’t great numbers of references to the environment and recycling.

It is God’s creation, his

But those that are there speak of being kind to creation, being stewards of it rather than master. It is God’s creation, his handiwork, It is something he loves. This is tinged with reality because man is to work the land and struggle against weeds. Another frequent picture, especially in the Old Testament is of a man sitting under a vine or fig tree, which a nomadic people wouldn’t be able to cultivate. God’s people had known a nomadic life during their years in the desert, but the promised land would enable them to be settled and to farm. So stability and nurture are key words in our response to God and his creation. Maybe the recycling reverend isn’t such a bad title to have after all because our efforts to care for creation do draw us closer to God. Lets strive to do more so that there is plenty for our generation to hand over to those yet to come. Peter Dakin Jobs in the churchyard (1) We are very grateful to Christine Clark for taking on the task of organising a band of volunteers who give a Saturday morning each month during the summer to tidy the churchyard. The first working party of this year is 23rd April, with jobs being allocated as people arrive at 10am. Then At 11am everything stops for tea or coffee and a chat, and people start to drift away at 12 noon. Just those few hours make all the difference, so why not join in and see what difference you can make. For more information speak to Christine Clark on 01889 505676 A map for the future We are wanting to make the churchyard records accessible and also secure. Those two characteristics may sound at odds with each other, so let me explain. Today there is a continued interest in researching family history and frequently we get requests for information. However, our records aren’t as good as many hope. For example, mapping a churchyard wasn’t carried out until the last 40 years. The burial register records all the internments that happen in the churchyard. That gives us a knowledge of who is

in the churchyard, but we don’t always know precisely where the graves are. We are looking for a volunteer to take the lead in drawing up a map that has a clear reference system so that we can have an alphabetical index, a grid index and any other information at the touch of a button. We will meet the expenses involved, and give information and help where we can. It would be an ideal pastime for someone wanting to find out more about the village and the families who have lived here. If you are interested, please speak to the Vicar (01782 397073) in the first instance.

.Are you ‘crafty’? If you are crafty there’s some good news for you. On the third Sunday of each month there is a small gathering at the back of church of young people who are crafty. Crafty in this instance means to like doing things with paints, paper and glue. Each month the activity is different, and they are shown off to the adult congregation at the end of their service. Crafty is ideal for primary school aged children. To find out more, get in touch with Lisa on 01889 589244.

Best Kept Village Competition 2016.

A reminder that the judging for the Best Kept Village Competition can take place at anytime in May, June, and July (the dates are not given). April is the time when work to prepare the village for the competition should be well underway.

Private front gardens as well as the public areas of the village are included in the judging. Neat and well maintained front gardens reflect the level of pride and care which residents take in the appearance of their village. All residents can also help by weeding/sweeping the pavements in front of your house. A wealth of floral displays throughout the village also helps to impress the judges. Please also help by picking up any litter that you might see when you are walking around the village.

The Best Kept Village Competition also includes a children’s poster competition for 5 to 11 year olds. The village receives points for displaying the posters around the village and for the past two years there has been an excellent display of these in the village bus shelters, supplied by the pupils of Green Lea School.

The aim of the posters is to encourage local residents and visitors to help keep the village clean, tidy and attractive by:

1. Not dropping litter/picking litter up.

2

Send your entry to the P

All entries will be displayed around

H

2. Keeping front gardens neat and tidy and attractive (with hanging plant baskets where possible).

3. Helping to keep the streets neat and tidy by regular weeding of the pavements immediately in front of their houses.

4. Clearing up after their dogs. 5. Not vandalising village amenities such as park

equipment, notice boards, bus shelters and benches etc.

Posters should be A4 in size. Send your entry to the Parish Clerk by Friday 6th May 2016 making sure that your name, age and address is on the back. The clerk’s contact details are at the front of the magazine.

Hilderstone Parish Council will select a winning poster out of each age category and will award a £10 WH Smith voucher to each. These winning entries will also be forwarded to the Community Council of Staffordshire for entry into the County Competition. All entries will be displayed around Hilderstone village during the summer.

Superfast Broadband Service

You may be aware that Superfast Broadband is now available in Hilderstone. The cabinet has recently gone live in the village and if residents are within an approximate distance of 2km of a Cabinet they should be able to benefit from Superfast Fibre Broadband. It is also available to order in Milwich. Please note that this is not an automatic upgrade and residents need to contact their

service providers to order and upgrade to a Superfast Fibre service.

Officers from the Superfast Staffordshire team at Staffordshire County Council will be in the village on Thursday 31st March 2016 to promote Superfast Broadband and the benefits to the community. The benefits of Superfast Broadband and further details can also be found at:

www.superfaststaffordshire.co.uk .

Wind Turbine Application at Cotwalton.

The 2014 application to install a large wind turbine at Drumble Woods in Cotwalton which was initially refused by Stafford Borough Council and then ‘appealed’ by the developer, is to be finally re-considered by the Secretary of State. Stafford Borough Council has been notified that a decision should be made by 18th April 2016.

Littering Fines

Three women have been fined a total of £2,100 for dropping cigarette butts in Stafford and then failing to pay the fixed penalty fines. The prosecution was brought about by Stafford Borough Council and demonstrates how seriously the Council deals with the offence of littering.

Hilderstone Heritage, Part Thirteen

Oral tradition, recorded for posterity in the 1970s, provides us

with the following wonderful story:

“In the reign of Edward VII [1901-10] the Bournes of

Hilderstone Hall entertained the young Mr and Miss

Fitzherbert (children of Lord Stafford of Swynnerton Hall) to

dinner. When the time came to return home the carriage was

brought to the front door and the young couple took their

seats. On the way through the village one of the horses, which

was a young one, took fright at a heap of stones on the

roadside and ran away, forcing the other horse with it.

As the horses bounded away the groom was thrown from his

seat and Mr Fitzherbert struggled from the carriage in an effort

to reach the reins. In doing so he too was thrown to the

ground, leaving his sister clinging on for dear life. In their fright

the horses turned down a narrow lane leading to a farm and

landed up – horses, carriage and passenger – in the pond

opposite the farmhouse.

Inside the farmhouse all were in bed except for the farmer and

his wife. Workmen were aroused and all rushed to the rescue;

one going to search for the missing men, one caring for the

horses and the farmer’s wife helping the young lady to change

into dry clothes.

Imagine her return to Swynnerton Hall, in a milk float (the

carriage being unusable) clad in the farmer’s wife’s clothes;

only to go unrecognised by their own butler.”

Perhaps it would have been wise to stay in the village hotel?

Hilderstone House, formerly known as the Villa, was built in

the early Nineteenth Century in the style of a Regency villa. It

was either a purpose built hotel or was soon converted to one.

The hotel possessed a horse and trap which was used to

fetch visitors from Stone.

As noted in the last article, at one time Hilderstone boasted

three shops. The least well known was situated in a cottage

which stood at the top of the bank where ‘The Bungalow’ now

stands. Mrs Chambers, a widow, ran the shop from the late

1930s to the early 1950s. The shop stocked sweets, pop,

crisps and other small sundry items. It was open 6 days a

week until 9.0pm.The entrance was up three steps through

the front door. The shop area was in the living room with a

small area by the counter where customers could stand and

consume their purchases. When Mrs Chambers retired she

went to live with her daughter in Stone.

Apparently the cellar was invariably flooded – something that

would not have been allowed to happen in previous times as

the cottage had been a Beerhouse and almost certainly

brewed its own beer in this very cellar.

Beerhouses differed from public houses as they were only

licensed (at the cost of two guineas per annum) to sell beer

which had to be consumed on the premises. They were

created under the Beerhouse Act 1830. The Beerhouse is

clearly shown on the 1843 Tithe Map and mentioned in other

Nineteenth Century Documents.

COUNTRYSIDE WATCHER – APRIL GARLIC MUSTARD or JACK-BY-THE HEDGE

I love to walk down the lane and see April dressed in Spring Green. There is much bird activity. I see my first Swallow, but one is not quite enough yet to make a Summer! The trees are dressed for Spring. There are beautiful green leaves on their branches and blossom is everywhere. The year’s first baby Rabbits are playing in the lane. They see me and then dash away, zigzagging till they find a gap in the hedge. There are signs of the Badger’s presence in the fields and hedgerows. There is definitely a smell of Spring in the air. So my spring perfume is wafting on the breeze towards me from the fragrant spring flowers and leaves around me, and the fresh smell of a new dawn when the Song Thrush tries to out-sing the rest of the Dawn Chorus.

I reach the bottom of the drumble with an arch of tree branches meeting over my head. I stop and stand admiring a large cluster of small snow-white flowers in the verge and on the hedge bank under the tall trees. A voice behind me says: ‘Jack-by-the-Hedge’, lovely aren’t they?’ I turn and see a fellow lane walker, though she has been walking the lanes much longer that I have.

Yes, it is a mass of Garlic Mustard, or Jack-by-the-Hedge. It is also known as Poor Man’s Mustard and Sauce Alone. It flowers from April to June. It is a fresh-looking, erect, annual flower. It can grow from one to four feet tall. The stems are upright and branched. The leaf stalks are long at the bottom of the stem and short above. It has large, wide, heart-shaped leaves. If they are rubbed between fingers they smell of Garlic. It has many heads of snow-white flowers. Each flower has four pure white petals in a cross shape. The fruits of these flowers are oval, long and thin, with the seeds in a row inside. In the early Summer they open and discharge black seeds that fall to the round and so the next year’s flowers are born. Garlic Mustard is the main food for the caterpillars of the Green-veined White and Orange Tip Butterflies who lay their eggs on the plants.

In times past, having picked the leaves before the flowers, people ate this Garlic smelling and mustard tasting plant all the time. It is still eaten today in spring salads. In the 17

th Century, Garlic Mustard was

used to flavour salt fish or roast meat. It was also used as a herb medicine for sore throats and tonsillitis.

However, all I see is a carpet of most attractive, white spring flowers, Jack-by-the-Hedge or Garlic Mustard.

A SPRING WALK

I feel so special, though I cannot see

Why this special feeling should be in me!

But the sky above is a brilliant blue,

There are leafless trees where the blue shines through,

There are noiseless planes above me so high

Leaving their white tails criss-crossing the sky.

There are buds on the trees of palest green,

A musical chorus from birds unseen,

In verges beside me Celandines grow,

While the tractors hum in the fields below.

The dog from the farm near by barks to say:

'I'm feeling fine on this wonderful day!'

And the sheep on the hillside answer back.

Then a lone car drones up the drumble track —

And the warm sun breathes on me.

Easter Love On Easter we celebrate love, love coming down from heaven, love blanketing the earth in a transforming embrace; unique and infinite love, giving more than we can imagine for us, to cleanse our sin, a perfect sacrifice, Lamb of God, the walking, talking Word. He is teacher, role model, friend, this God in human form, dying, then rising from the dead, proving all who believe will also rise to have eternal life, with Him, Lord of all. Oh, Happy, Happy Easter! By Joanna Fuchs

Easter Joy

Jesus came to earth, To show us how to live, How to put others first, How to love and how to give. Then He set about His work, That God sent Him to do; He took our punishment on Himself; He made us clean and new. He could have saved Himself, Calling angels from above, But He chose to pay our price for sin; He paid it out of love. Our Lord died on Good Friday, But the cross did not destroy His resurrection on Easter morn That fills our hearts with joy. Now we know our earthly death, Like His, is just a rest. We'll be forever with Him In heaven, where life is best. So we live our lives for Jesus, Think of Him in all we do. Thank you Saviour; Thank you Lord. Help us love like you!

Churchyard Tidy up

In conjunction with the Best Kept Village Competition we will again be organising the monthly tidy up sessions which start on Saturday 23rd April 2016 from

10 am to 12 noon. In previous years volunteers have made such a difference to our Church yard and visitors really do appreciate seeing such a tidy church yard. We are a friendly group and everyone is made very welcome. We have a coffee break at 11am.. No specific gardening experience is needed but it is easier if you are able to bring your own tools i.e. lawn shears, secateurs, rakes etc. Do come along at 10am on Saturday 23rd April and see what a difference we can make again this year. The Church yard has been highly commented on by the Best Kept Village Judges and our points go towards the overall points awarded to Hilderstone Village.. BKV (Best Kept Village) Competition 2016

At the time of writing this article we still have the threat of more snow! However, in two months’ time we are entering into the season of making our village look neat and tidy for the Best Kept Village Competition when judging takes place in May, June, July. Unfortunately Hilderstone has one disadvantage compared to some villages as the Conservation Appraisal pointed out. We are a linear village i.e. stung out over a large distance not like some villages that have a specific centre or Village Green. The shape of the village does provide some disadvantages in that it is difficult to galvanize a team to improve the standing of the whole village. This year I am suggesting that key areas of the village form their own Teams and work to improve their own area to the benefit of the whole village. These key areas are;

• Eastholme including the Bus Shelter • Roebuck Corner including Dingle Lane and the Children’s Play

area • Village Hall grounds and surrounding area. • The area referred to as the Village Green, the Information Kiosk

and the bus shelter • Christchurch - church yard. • The whole of The Meadows, including Severn Trent corner.

The areas we are judged on are from the three Village Gates as we approach the village. In conjunction with this article please visit our Village website and read the judge’s comments from last year. Our sister village of Fulford came 1st last year so let’s see if we can win it this year for Hilderstone! Help is needed…… !!

Can you lend a hand - perhaps just an hour - with a friend

– to monitor the photographic display in Church, OR help serve the teas, sell raffle tickets or Trail Programmes during

either days of the weekend?

If it’s your first time helping out it’s a good, friendly way to get involved with the weekend!

For newcomers to the village the Scarecrow weekend is a bi-annual event started in 2008.

P

Cooks Tips

Chocolate Swiss roll

Ingredients

60g Plain Flour

15g sieved cocoa powder

3 medium eggs

75g caster sugar

Whipped Cream

Caster sugar to dust

Method

Preheat oven to fan 180°C, conventional 200°C, gas 6.

Grease and line a 33cm x 23cm Swiss roll tin or shallow baking tray with

baking parchment.

Sift the flour into a small bowl and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar for about 10 minutes, until the

mixture is pale and light and the whisk leaves a trail.

Using a large metal spoon, gradually and gently fold the flour and cocoa

powder into the mixture, until evenly mixed.

Gently pour the mixture into the tin and lightly level the surface. Bake

for 8-10 minutes until well risen, golden and firm to the touch.

Whilst the Swiss roll is baking place a large piece of baking parchment

onto the work surface and sprinkle with caster sugar. As soon as the cake

is baked turn out onto the paper, removing the parchment the Swiss roll

was cooked in. Trim the edges of the cake and then spread quickly with

whipped cream.

Roll up from a short end, using the sugared parchment to help, so the

cake will be fully enclosed within the parchment.

Leave to cool in the parchment to maintain roll shape and then slice as

required.

in the churchyard, but we don’t always know precisely where the graves are.
