In 2014 Sacred Heart and Holy Name initiated discussions concerning a collaboration of our two parishes. After the lengthy discus-sions among the steering committee members and the Archdiocese, we decided that each of our parishes would stand alone, each with a pastor or administrator. At the same time, Car-dinal O’Malley asked that we continue to find ways to collaborate. Did you notice the story about the next steps for “Disciples in Mission” last week? The Pilot story lists our two parishes as ‘under discussion’ to determine in which phase of Disciples in Mission we would be taking part. What does Disciples in Mission mean for us? Cardinal O’Malley asks each parish to undertake innovative approaches to our parish mission. To this end, the primary efforts in-volves evangelization, collaborating among par-ishes, and finding innovative approaches to par-ish life. Sacred Heart’s Parish Council has been discussing these plans over the past months. The development of an “international club” is one of the initiatives for Sacred Heart. Also the development of an ‘evangelization team’ of people from Sacred Heart and Holy Name is a second initiative. As we move forward, we will keep you informed about these developments. I would appreciate to hear from you with your thoughts on this matter for our parish and for the other parishes in our part of the dio-cese. Msgr. Frank Kelley

2017 Catholic Appeal After four months, we have passed the 85% mark in our drive for annual Catholic Appeal or $41,004.00 towards our goal of $47,975,00. Thank you to the 218 parish members who have pledged to the campaign. Please make your gift soon so that we can receive our parish rebate of 60% of monies raised over our goal for 2017.

If you have not pledged already, please take a blue pledge form from the back of the church or pledge online at bostoncatholicappeal.org. We need all parish members to make a gift, large and small. This enables Sacred Heart parish to pay its fair share of the services and ministries which the Archdiocese provides us during the year. Thank you for your prayers for a successful Catholic Appeal.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The Spirit comes to the aid of our weak-ness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit intercedes wit inexpressible groanings.” These words from St. Paul give us great consolation, especially when we feel dis-tracted or unable to pray. As we take time this week for prayer, let us rely on the Spirit of God to give us the words we need even when we feel inadequate or preoccupies. Trust that God knows the desires of our heart.

SACRED HEART

INTERNATIONAL CLUB The Sacred Heart Parish International Club met for the first time on June 29th in the Murray Room, (we all realized a better name is at the top of the agenda item!!) It was a very successful first meeting—spiritual and fun—with over 30 people attending. It was great to see parishioners from Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe and from each of the Saturday and Sunday Masses.

Fr. Kelley led the meeting with a group discussion about why an “International Club” could help unify our Parish’s wonderful diversity. We have a special congrega-tion, with lots to share. We had excellent group participa-tion and a wide range of ideas were presented as ways to enrich our shared faith community: liturgies, music, food socials and cookouts, educational programs.

Please join us for our next meeting: Thursday,

July 27th at 7:00 PM in the Murray Room. All are wel-

come. Our goal is for us to get together in Christ through

spiritual, educational and fun events. In addition to contin-

uing the discussion started on June 29th, the group will out-

line next steps forward. Please join this exciting, dynamic

group. Rob Grady, Mary Celeste Brown, Ana Gladys

Amaya, Marie Nau, Ermine Pierre, Adriana Cillo, Bob

LePore and Michael Alphonso.

Juan and Ana Chavez, a couple from our Sacred Heart Parish ae once again sponsoring a collec-tion for the children in need in the Dominican Republic. They run Fundacion Latidos De Amor

(Heartbeats of Love Foundation) a registered non-profit organization to help homeless kids in their homeland. They travel each year with dona-tions from all over the city of Boston. Last year they collected over 3,000 pairs of shoes for home-less children. This year, the organization is asking for filled backpacks and the goal is to reach 2,000 new bags filled with school supplies such as note-books, pencils, erasers, crayons, pencil sharpeners etc. Backpacks and/or supplies for the backpacks may be dropped off at any Mass the weekend of August 6th and August 13th or at 4164 Washing-ton St. Roslindale, MA. For more information please call Ana at 617-407-6980 or [email protected] Thank you for your continued support.

Today’s Liturgy

In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks to us about the wheat and the weeds. The common interpretation allows us to think of two sets of people: the churchgoers and those who don’t go. However, the Church invites us in the first and second readings to think of the wheat and weeds in a more personal way. What virtues and gifts (wheat) do we have in our hearts; and what faults and weaknesses (weeds) have we developed over time in our lives? It is much too easy to think of another person in our family, our job or an acquaintance as the weeds in our life. They probably don’t go to Mass or get in-volved in the Church. It could also be that person who does go to church and is active in the community but makes bad choices. Let’s take a minute and do what we often don’t: think of our own faults, our weaknesses, and our sin as the weeds in our hearts. Recognizing our shortcomings should not cause us distress because our baptism allows us to say to our Father “…you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.” (Ws. 12: 19) Therefore, we should rejoice be-cause as St. Paul says, “The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness”. (Rom. 8:26)

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 23, 2017

XVI DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

1ra.
