It can be a considerable decision to match the interests and desires of your child with the right environment to facilitate their academic and extra-curricular growth, whilst ensuring they develop into a well-rounded individual who is prepared for life beyond school. For these reasons, The SCOTS PGC College, a co educational day and boarding school in Warwick, Queensland, places a strong emphasis on the foundations of modern schooling with the added measure of engendering in students and staff alike, a common set of heartfelt country values. Scots has a long history in teaching excellence and provides three separate sub-schools for children across Junior (Prep to Year 4), Middle (Year 5 to Year 8) and Senior (Year 9 to Year 12). The separate sub-schools approach helps children develop to their capacity with specialist teachers, appropriate curriculum and activities geared to their interests and age levels. All students at Scots benefit from small class sizes with personal care and attention from teachers. SCOTS curriculum is based on the national framework and students are challenged to excel through encouragement and are given the ability to learn from their mistakes. A wide range of co-curricular activities including drama, music, pipe band and a world-class Equestrian programme is offered. Children can choose sporting pursuits inclusive of track and field, rugby, netball, basketball, hockey, swimming, futsal and a touch football excellence programme. One of the leading boarding schools in Queensland, The SCOTS PGC College, has separate boarding campuses for boys and girls from Year 6 to Year 12. Students are housed in modern rooms and have access to fun common areas, extra tuition, monitored IT resources and weekend activities, all under the guidance of our housemaster/mistress. A unique aspect to Scots philosophy is that all students dine together each day and are provided with healthy nutritious meals prepared by a dietician. Students can choose from healthy salads, fruits and a delicious hot buffet. Should you be interested in viewing The SCOTS PGC College as a potential school for your child, we invite you to come to our campus where our Registrar will provide you with a personalised tour of the College and answer any of your questions. Wattles Origin LinksCurrently we are entrenched in that special time of year when sport tragics across the region are only to happy to declare their interstate allegiances, be they Queensland ‘Cane toads’ or New South Wales ‘Cockroaches’.By the time readers are perusing these paragraphs the dust will have settled on the 101st battle between the ‘Blues’ and the ‘Maroons’ last night. A Queensland loss will signal the end of an eight year dominance by Queensland over New South Wales that started in 2006, and the awakening of a new era for the ‘Blues’, their last series win a 2 – 1 match result from the three match series in 2005 under the leadership of Newcastle ‘Knights’ hooker Danny Buderus. Of course a ‘Maroons’ win will raise a cheer from most of the Allora district, and have a record nine straight series wins still a possibility for Mal Meninga’s men.But regardless of the result local league side the Wattles ‘Warriors’ can lay claim to some significant Origin involvement.Former player Rohan Hancock was selected from the Wattles A Grade side for the inaugural State of Origin match played back in 1980, one of five Origin appearances he would make. Former Allora local & Wattles’ junior player Grant Rix was on the bench for Queensland in the 1986 with Brett French, the ‘Maroons’ skipper for that game Wally Lewis.Wattles junior & senior club player Shane Webcke became a household name with the Brisbane Bronco’s, and ran on in 21 Origin matches for Queensland.Former Queensland second-rower Peter Ryan also wore the Wattles green & gold as a junior player, and player to matches for Queensland in 1998. Prior to State of Origin, John Cowley, Les Lane & International Greg Platz all gained State representation as Wattles’ players, Lew Platz another former player of renown who went on to represent Queensland & also Australia.Current Wattles A Grader Liam Ross is the nephew of former 21 game Origin veteran Greg Conescu. While predating Wattles considerably, and the Origin institution, Allora can boast the exploits of the Laws brothers Colin & Fred. Fred debuted for Queensland against New South Wales in 1927 eventually wearing the maroon State colours in 32 matches. Fred, who played six test matches for Australia, also headed to Britain on two Kangaroo tours, an exceptional feat, in 1929-30 and 1933-34. Colin Laws debuted for Queensland in 1928,

running on in twelve matches for his state across his playing career.Another piece of trivia is that Max Sterling was a talented player in the Allora St. George Cup Premiership winning side of 1958, the team captained by Ron Teys, a Queensland representative in 1950 & 1954. Sterling’s name however lived long and loud in rugby league for many season’s into the future, his son Peter Sterling playing in thirteen Origin matches for New South Wales from 1981 to 1988. Sterling the younger also played eighteen test matches for Australia, and despite his New South Wales loyalties he was born in Toowoomba. Many will be aware of the footballing prowess of the Gleeson brothers, Trevor & wife Christine owners of the Allora Advertiser. Trevor was a respected player with Wynnum-Manly in his playing days, while his brother John played 25 matches for Queensland from 1961- 1967 and ten Tests for Australia.Another on the local side is familiar Allora face Ronny Gwynne, a former Allora junior player and later an Ipswich representative in the famous Bulimba Cup who also played in a Queensland team in a State trial.Allora resident Wendy Rees, a Wattles Life Member & Volunteer will be watching the match closely, and even more so if her family member, halfback Ben Hunt gets the call to play.

Glyn Rees

It might be all smiles and giggles with Allora based State of Origin foes ‘Maroons’ Kylie Rees & ‘Blues’ Serena Fiechtner, but it will a different story when Queensland run on to Sydney’s ANZ Stadium in the 101st State of Origin contest, the second match of the 2014 series. Kylie says a Queensland win against the odds is a foregone conclusion, but for Serena it is the start of a restoration of New South Wales ‘Pride & Passion’.

Allora features in short film at Cannes Film FestivalGriffith University Film School post graduate students who produced a short film using Allora and Yangan as screen locations are delighted with their reception at Cannes Film Festival recently. The film, called "OUROBOROS", and tells the story of Linden Connor, a man from the not too distant future whose wife is at death's door following a long history of medical problems stemming from a hit and run accident in her youth. He uses a time travel device to try and stop the accident however finds he has a complicated and emotional journey.Southern Downs Regional Council supported the movie, assisting with a road closure during the filming in November last year, use of the Allora Community Hall and promotional assistance.Film Director Henry Boffin said Ouroboros screened as part of the Cannes Court Metrage, a short film marketplace that consists of just over 2000 short films."While the market is saturated Ouroboros did have an upper hand in that it was screened as part of the Griffith Film School showcase, designed to show off the best of Brisbane cinema to the Cannes audiences."The screening took place in one of the prestigious palais cinemas - a luxury that the majority of other short films did not get."The cinema was nearly maxed to capacity and the film was well received - gaining praise for its handling of the complex themes within a short time limit, its technical prowess and its acting," he said.Mr Boffin said while in Cannes he spent time promoting the film and organised meetings with several film festivals from around the world who had representatives in France."I'm glad to say that many of these meetings appear to have been successful and Ouroboros will be seen in other locations around the world soon."That means the scenes of Allora and Yangan, and of course the credits which talk about the Allora and Yangan communities and support from the Southern Downs Regional Council, will be screened all over the world.

"As well as promoting the film I took the chance to investigate the world of film that was on offer over the ten days. It was a very exciting time and great to be part of the Cannes atmosphere."I also went to seminars by legendary horror director Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame, and John Kilik, producer of the Hunger Games series to learn more about the craft," he said.SDRC Mayor Cr Peter Blundell, who attended the community screening of Ouroboros at the Allora Community Hall last month, said he was pleased the movie stacked up against the intense competition at Cannes."This is great achievement by the movie producers and director and it's exciting to think Southern Downs townships will be screened at festivals around the world," he said.Film Producer Ms Hales said the Council had been very supportive of the Griffith University Film School project."Council have been great to work with - they closed part of the main street for us and also assisted with use of the local hall and other facilities."We're really grateful for this and have acknowledged the Council, Allora and Yangan communities in our film credit."We were pleased to hold our community screening on May 4 - everyone seemed happy with the final product and that was important for us," she said.Anyone with questions about the film please contact Louise Hales Co-Producer: 0418 826 535.

Ouroboros Film Director Henry Boffin all suited up for the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival.

Listings invited for the Southern Downs 2014 Seniors' Week Calendar of EventsIt might seem like a long time until Seniors Week (August 16 - 24) however extensive planning and organisation is needed to stage the many events and activities for this important week. The Southern Downs Regional Council co-ordinates with many local community groups and organisations to present a jam-packed week (or weeks) of activities, events and performances.Organisations or community groups planning an event or activity to celebrate seniors in the Southern Downs are invited to have these listed for ‘FREE’ in the Southern Downs 2014 Seniors' Week Calendar of Events. The deadline for submissions was set down for June 13 however Council has extended this to June 19.Seniors' Week is an opportunity for residents of all ages to join together and celebrate the contribution of older people in our

community. In support of Seniors Week 2014, Council is again compiling a calendar of events happening across the Southern Downs. Events and activities could be specifically for seniors to encourage their active participation, or could be open to seniors and anyone in the Southern Downs to get together in celebration of seniors. The response to the call for listings of Seniors' Week events and activities in past years has been so great, Council is happy to accept listings for events and activities that will be held in the week directly before and after the official Seniors' Week, making it nearly a "Seniors' Month".Council’s Manager Community Services, Sheila Stebbings said the response to last year’s calendar of events was amazing, with more than 20 organisations, groups and clubs holding almost 30 events and activities across the region. There was beading and bowls, croquet and country music, luncheons and lapidary, Toastmasters and Tai Chi, the sensational Seniors Expo and a whole lot more.“The calendar of events is distributed far and wide throughout our region and is just one of the ways Council supports the promotion of Seniors' Week and its commitment to seniors in the Southern Downs,” Ms Stebbings said.“The feedback last year was really positive, with the range of events and activities on offer valued greatly by local seniors and our community in general, and we are anticipating another great response to listings in the calendar this year," she said.If you would like your event or activity included in this year’s calendar, you will need to complete the Southern Downs 2014 Seniors Week Calendar of Events Listing Form. Forms are available from Council’s Community Contact Centres or by phoning 1300 MY SDRC (1300 69 7372). You can also download the form from Council’s website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au. Forms should be returned to Council no later than 5pm Thursday, 19 June 2014.For more information about the calendar of events, contact Council’s Community Development Officers on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Looking Back…PHOTOS

Today’s photo is from Tom and Lawrence Telford’s album and shows something that I would imagine would have been pretty rare in the 1940’s when it was taken – a female buckjump rider. The photo was taken at a rodeo at the Allora show and Tom and Lawrence thought that the rider’s name was Marge Bradby. One of the pick-up men was Bill Byrne. Note the photographers on the left trying to get a good shot.

Allora’s Past 25 years ago June 1989Orienteering Course

Allora State School students from years 6 – 10 are now using the Allora Mountain Reserve as an orienteering course. Physical education teacher, Mr. Mark Swan, said that they were lucky to have such a great facility in so close a proximity to the school that it could be used conveniently within a physical education period. Having the Mountain Reserve so handy has already paid dividends with five Allora students being selected in the Darling Downs orienteering team. Maps have been drawn up setting out four different courses according to the student’s experience.

Fondness of Australians for making speeches has been commented on humorously – and sometimes caustically – by many overseas visitors. Statistics are not available, but Allora probably holds the record. At a presentation to a departing constable and his wife a few nights ago, the speeches numbered 30!The Courier-Mail 12th June 1939

(Constable W. Bengston and his wife had been in Allora for five years when they were farewelled and presented with a wallet of notes in the Shire Hall before departing for Jandowae. Allora’s Past 100 years ago June 1914Boxing Fiasco

The long-talked about boxing match between Collins, of Allora, and Barry, of Stanthorpe, which was billed for Saturday

night, fizzled out badly. Both men were there, apparently trained to the minute. A referee, engaged at considerable expense, was there, and considering the weather, there was a satisfactory audience, many enthusiasts coming from long distances to witness the contest. The hitch in the arrangements was that the money on Barry’s side was not forthcoming. The deposit (£10) had been lodged some weeks before, but the backers on whom Barry apparently relied for the balance did not come up to scratch. Explanations to this effect were made by Barry and Mr. A. E. Bacon (Royal Hotel), who had put up the deposit, these being received, considering the circumstances, in a more amicable manner than might have been expected. No doubt, the announcement that the patron’s money, less one shilling, would be handed back, was considered as an extenuating circumstance, especially as good value was given for the shilling in a capital three-round spar between Roy Ross (Allora) and Owen Cairns (Warwick) Tommy Collins and the referee (Tom King) sparred for three rounds, and Barry and Cairns also gave an exhibition.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

A man at an auction sale started bidding for a parrot.

The bidding went higher and higher, but finally the man bought the bird.

Then he realised that he didn't even know if it could talk, so he asked the auctioneer.

"Of course it can talk," he replied. "Who do you think was bidding against you?"

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image presents Screen It 2014Screen It 2014 is Australia’s biggest moving image competition for young people Celebrating ten years of creativity and imagination. Register now – hurry, entries close Friday 12 September 2014 - acmi.net.au/screenitRegistrations are now open for Screen It 2014, Australia’s largest competition for school-aged filmmakers, animators and game makers, run annually by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).The competition is free to enter and open to all primary or secondary students. Entries can be live-action films, videogames or animations. Each year students are inspired by a new theme. In 2014 the broad theme Reflection, provides a stimulus to encourage students and teachers to explore curriculum-based content while learning game, animation and filmmaking techniques.Students may wish to relate the theme to self, family, friendship, community, country, topical issues in the media, the past, present or future, cause and effect, emotions, or everyday life. They may reflect about aspects of wellbeing, representations in literature, mythology, art, and culture, or create abstract interpretations involving water, mirrors, or other objects with reflective surfaces or qualities.Unlike other student film competitions, Screen It is designed to provide rich cross-disciplinary educational outcomes for participants. Teachers are encouraged to use the Education Resources devised by ACMI's experienced educators to assist with developing the theme, to register their class for online Screen It Video Conferences with ACMI Education staff, and to utilise Generator, ACMI's online creative tool to support the production process.ACMI's Education Manager, Christine Evely, is proud of the contribution the competition makes to the lives of young people, “For ten years now Screen It has fostered creativity, skill development and a generation of young people able to critically reflect on issues and experiences, but more significantly I’d like to highlight the unique and creative body of work made each year by a new generation of moving image makers.”“Screen It provides an opportunity to genuinely celebrate the voice of young people. We look forward to the myriad ways this year’s theme will spark imaginative and transformative storytelling through the moving image. Students can enter Screen It through their school or independently; they can work by themselves, as part of a collaborative team, or even as a whole class. I’d really like to encourage primary and secondary students from all around Australia to submit entries in 2014.”“We are keen to see how students investigate ‘reflection’. Reflection could be a bouncing ray of light, heat or sound; an image looking back at you from a mirror or a puddle; the casting back of your mind to a day gone by. Then again, for some it will beimportant to think about the spaces that enable reflection to take place, for others, the focus may be on the people who have shaped their lives, meaningful experiences, or abstract interpretations of reflection,” said Christine.Screen It is judged by a panel of industry professionals. Winners will be acknowledged at a glittering red carpet awards ceremony in December, each receiving a certificate, a trophy and a DVD prize pack courtesy of Madman Entertainment. Along with prizes for each category, the primary and secondary school with the Best Overall Entries will be recognised. In addition, winning entries will be added to the Australian Mediatheque where ACMI visitors can view moving image works on demand, as well as being exhibited in ACMI’s Screen Worlds exhibition, on Generator and the ACMI website.Screen It celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2014. In 2013 the

competition attracted 373 entries submitted by over 1567 students nationwide, making it Australia’s biggest moving image competition for young people.Entries for the 2014 competition close on Friday 12 September. Students and teachers from across Australia can register online now. Registration is free. Visit acmi.net.au/screenit for more information.

Government to develop their knowledge and skills in sustainable land management.Nominations are now open and can be made online at www.bobhawkelandcareaward.com.au. Nominations close on Friday 4 July 2014.In 2012, the first Bob Hawke Landcare Award was presented to New South Wales dairy farmer, Lynne Strong. Ms Strong was recognised for her commitment, passion and leadership in sustainable agriculture through her award-winning enterprise, Picture You in Agriculture. Ms. Strong was delighted to have been honoured as the inaugural winner and the opportunities it gave her.“The prize money offers my team the opportunity to support the innovators, the early adopters, the people who ride the ridges, the brave and the inspiring to stand loud and proud and get the message out that Australian farmers are dynamic, innovative, exciting and are underpinning every single Australian’s quality of life, and they deserve to be profitable,” she said.Nominations will be judged by the Bob Hawke Landcare Award Advisory Panel, and a winner announced at the 2014 National Landcare Awards, which takes place in Melbourne on 18 September. The Bob Hawke Landcare Award is administered by Landcare Australia on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, through funding from the Australian Government.

Wattles Back in Winner’s CircleThe Wattles Warriors ‘National Farmers Warehouse’ A Grade side consolidated their position on the top rung of the Toowoomba Rugby League ‘Hutchies Cup’ premiership ladder on Saturday evening

with a hard fought 24 – 16 victory. It was a night of and for celebration for the Wattles Club, Ambassador Tarla Brennan’s ‘Ladies in Winter’ lady’s night, recognising the contribution of women to the Wattles club, a wonderful success despite the cool damp evening. To put the icing on the ‘Warriors’ cake they collected premiership points in all grades, also winning reserve grade 36 – 20 and Under 18 in a gutsy effort to the very end 28 – 24.The ‘Warriors’ A graders had been unbeaten in the first eight rounds of the competition, but have suffered losses to Dalby & Gatton in their last two outings, the Gatton loss a nail biter in extra time in the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy Final last weekend. While their injury list is a daunting concern for Coach Luke Duggan, he also had five regular A Graders out attending a wedding.“You are what you are on the day” said Duggan, “we showed

genuine depth, and are back heading the right way up the ladder.” The Coach was more than impressed with what was a great win, “especially with so many of the guys out, I was stoked with the way everyone stood up, and we are looking forward to building on that for this week end.” Souths got away to an early lead on a cold & wet Platz Oval through a try by centre Sam Cocker in the eighth minute, but Wattles hit the ignition switch to run in four unanswered touchdowns to lead 24 – 6 early in the second half. Lock forward Aaron Scheid and second-rower Conor Swinton scored under the posts off classic passes by Matt Duggan in front of the ‘Ladies in Winter’ marquee to add a little more to their entertainment schedule. The Wattles tries along with two Matt Duggan conversions had the home side in front at half time 12 – 6.Wattles cashed in for another twelve points in the six minutes after the break, quicksilver back Dale McAntee capitalising on a Tim Hentschel break to score after two minutes of play in the second stanza, before centre Dan Manley sailed in for a four-pointer soon after.Wattles led 24 – 6 with 25 minutes remaining.Feelings were running a little high with ten minutes to go, resulting in home side front-rower Pat Manley being placed on

report by Referee Randall Taylor. The ‘Tigers’ clawed their way back through tries by hooker Chris Richardson and five-eight Sean Loxley just minutes apart to trail 16 – 24 with twenty minutes to go, but a mighty defensive effort on both sides cancelled any further scoring opportunities.Winger Robbie Moore came close to adding to Wattles total four minutes from full time but the pass he took on his way to the corner was ruled forward.Wattles fullback Brodie Ciesiolka, who is usually five-eight, was in fine form and collected the ‘Hutchies Cup’ as Man of the Match, while centre Justin Van Der Poel was judged Wattles Player’s Player after an inspiring performance. Centre Dan Manley, halfback Matt Duggan and front-rower Carl Gale were also among Wattles’ best, hooker Mark Gordon making an impressive debut in the green & gold. Souths talented hooker Chris Richardson was among the ‘Tiger’ best, impressing throughout in a very hard fought encounter.Wattles 24 (Aaron Scheid, Conor Swinton, Dale McAntee, Dan Manley tries; Matt Duggan 4 goals) defeated Southern Suburbs 16.Reserve Grade - For the Wattles ‘Railway Hotel, Allora’ reserve graders victory was sweet on Saturday evening given there were beaten by a nose by Souths, in their previous 2014 season encounter, this time Wattles took the win 36 – 20.Souths clever halfback Tony Clevins claimed the first try of the game after just five minutes, Clevins having just played a starring role in the ‘Tiger’s Under 18 close loss.‘Warriors’ winger Will Duff scored in the ninth minute to level the ledger 6 all, before the visitors struck back through giant forward Keith Facey. But after a three try scoring rush before half time, Wattles cruised in at the break leading 24 – 12.Green & gold try scorers included tireless second-rower Alex Morris, who is always a danger near the line, and Brodie Frizzell who pocketed two touch downs in the shadow of half time. Frizzell bamboozled the defence in executing his first try, before cantering over to score from fifteen metres out.The ‘Warriors’ kept the pressure on in the second half, centre Garth Lonergan crossing twice before front-rower Jason Nightingale barged over. The ‘Tigers’ ran in two tries to try and keep pace with the home side but it was to little to late Wattles comfortably collecting the points for their third win of the year. Nightingale got through a tremendous workload in a highly rated performance that also netted him the ‘Player’s Player’ honours, while Garth Lonergan & Brodie Frizzell were always a concern of the opposition.Wattles 36 (Will Duff, Alex Morris, Brodie Frizzell 2, Garth Lonergan 2, Jason Nightingale tries; Brodie Frizzell 4 goals) defeated Southern Suburbs 20.Under 18 - Wattles ‘Allora Foodworks’ Under 18 side set the ball rolling for a night of Wattles victories after they defeated the Southern Suburbs ‘Tigers’ in a nailbiting finish, 28 – 24 to register their third win of the season.

Coach Shaun Henry was chuffed with his side’s performance, the ‘Warriors’ young guns never hit the lead until the final minute of the game, “ Our two halves Tom Henry & Joe Morris gelled well and our forwards led the way in a courageous win.” Coach Henry was particularly impressed with how his side rallied in the final ten minutes to engineer a gutsy win.Wattles Under 18 side can boast one of the most damaging running packs in the League, and led by prop Mitchell Duff they wore the ‘Tigers’ down across the seventy minutes of play. Forwards Jake Christensen, who also pocketed two tries, and Ben Ranger were strong throughout, as was fullback Will Bashford whose goal kicking was on the mark with four from five attempts. After 25 minutes of the game the ‘Tigers’ led 25 – 0 before Wattles snared tries through Jake Christensen & Dalton Neilsen to trail 10 – 25 at half time. Hooker Christensen caught Souths unawares often with his dummy-half darts. He scored another try immediately after the break, that was answered by Souths to have the scoreboard reading Wattles behind 16 – 24.When classy lock Max Somes sliced through six minutes from full time Wattles could smell a victory. They handled all that the desperate ‘Tigers’ could muster before a slick touchdown by halfback Joe Morris brought the Platz Oval crowd to their feet and assured victory, ‘Radar’ Bashford icing the cake with a successful conversion.Enthusiasm was running high in the Wattles’ defence, Jake Christensen, Mitchell Duff, Max Somes and Harry Fulward all crowded at the top of the tackle count sheet, Duff, Fulward, Bashford & Dalton Neilsen taking the honours for most hit-ups. Clever halfback Joe Morris received ‘Player’s Player’ honours from his team mates.Wattles 28 (Jake Christensen 2, Dalton Neilsen, Max Somes, Joe Morris tries; Will Bashford 4 goals) defeated Southern Suburbs 24.Wattles hit the highway next Sunday heading to Oakey to take on the local ‘Bears’ outfits.Matches kick-off at: 11.45 am (Under 18), 1.10 pm (Reserve Grade) and A Grade at 2.30 pm.
