They are among more than 780 Australian Citizens who have been honoured this week. Jody, as she is called by her family & friends, has been honoured for her service to the community of Chinchilla. After her marriage to Kevin Hart of Chinchilla, she volunteered her time to the Catholic Church St Vincent de Paul Society, Chinchilla Show Society, Rotary, Probus & the Chinchilla May Day Parade which ended in 2013. Jody Hart’s family has faced its share of challenges which would come to shape her public life. Since losing her mother, Dagma & her brother Mick to cancer, Jody became the driving force behind fundraisers such as the Black & White Ball and the Stockman’s Ball. Compounding this motivation was her son’s loss of his left arm to aggressive melanoma two years ago. “It was tragedy, really that drove me to support the cause”, Jody said. “In our town there are so many people who have lost their lives to cancer, and as yet there is no answer. Raising money to support these projects gives me hope that one day someone will come up with a cure”. One prominent legatee of repeated fundraising campaigns is the Olive McMahon Lodge in Toowoomba, which provides free, comfortable accommodation to cancer patients from the country as they seek treatment in their Regional town. When her grandson, Patrick Smith, received a $10,000 cochlear implant, thanks to a one off donation at the Hear and Say Centre in Brisbane, Jody became one of a committee to raise a similar donation back to the Centre some months later. Jody has not ever regarded her community involvement as anything out of the ordinary. Her big heart drives her when she sees a need for support. She is “surprised and honoured” to receive the Order of Australia Medal however; she is quick to acknowledge individuals, business houses and the community of Chinchilla who have been so wonderfully supportive “especially my husband Kevin who has been there with me every step of the way." Letter to the Editor…Dear Editor

The campaign DES (diethylstilboestrol) Awareness Week June 1-7 this year was to raise awareness across all Australian communities of the anti-miscarriage drug, DES. This hormone drug was given to women during pregnancy from 1938 to 1971 (and sometimes beyond). Women given DES and their children of that pregnancy are at higher risk of certain types of cancer and reproductive problems. There are about 740,000 DES exposed Australians, yet many are unaware of the fact and the potential adverse health effects. It is important that people with known or suspected exposure to DES are aware of the vital special care they need. Support group contact: DES Action Australia-NSW 02 98754820. Website: www.desnsw.blogspot.com

Thank you

Looking Back…Allora’s Past 25 years ago June 1989

Big Rate IncreaseAt the monthly meeting of the Allora Shire Council, shire clerk Mr. Lex Ellwood presented the rating estimates for the coming year, indicating that urban rates would need to rise 40% to cover the cost of maintaining council services. This would mean a rise in the minimum urban rate from $180 to $250. Water and garbage charges would not be increased and Shire Chairman, Cr. Jim Deacon, said that Allora water charges were the lowest in Queensland. No estimate was available for rural rates at this stage. The Council voted that the 1989/90 budget be framed around the estimates presented by Mr. Ellwood. Cr. Bruce Burge said that he was not happy about the size of the increase.

While in Sydney, Dr. and Mrs. Sapsford said good-bye to their son Dr. L. P. Sapsford who left by the “Oranto” for England, where he intends to spend two years. Allora’s Past 100 years ago June 1914Donovan – Baker

WeddingA pretty and interesting wedding was celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev. Father E. Carroll P. P. on Wednesday, 3rd June, 1914. The bridegroom was Mr. Frank Donovan, a very popular young man, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Donovan of Allora. The bride was Miss Bridget (Bridie) Baker, eldest daughter of Mrs. P. Phelan of Upper Forest Springs. A very large gathering of friends attended the ceremony and the wedding breakfast which took place at Downes’ Cafe.(Patrick Donovan, the first manager of the Queensland National Bank in Allora in 1888, commenced Donovan’s Auction Mart in 1895. In 1906 he was joined in the

business by his son Frank, and the firm of Donovan & Son was founded. The name was carried into the third generation when Jack Donovan started in the business then run by his father Frank. Following Jack’s accidental death in 1960 the business was run by other family members until bought by long time employee, Roy Smith, in 1962. In 1974 the business was sold to Primaries Mactaggarts who traded in Allora under the Donovan & Son name until 1976)The included photo is courtesy of “The Friend from Spring Creek” and was taken during an unknown parade in Allora in the 1940’s. The woman in the front is Mrs. Bridie Donovan. If anyone has any idea of the identity of the others in the buckboard or of the occasion, the Historical Society would be pleased to know..

2014 EMPIRE THEATRES FOUNDATION YOUTH BURSARY NOW OPENThe Empire Theatres Foundation is inviting young people between the ages of 12 and 25 to apply for bursaries to attend professional development short courses at leading Australian performing arts institutions. The bursaries aim to assist the region’s young creative talents who demonstrate current involvement and achievement in a performing arts discipline. Past recipients of Youth Bursary Programme have attended various highly prestigious institutions, including the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), the Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane and the Victorian College of Arts. Empire Theatres Foundation Chairperson, Sheena Liley said 275 Youth bursaries had been awarded since the program began in 2003. “The bursaries have helped develop the skills of many young people from this region, who have gone on to pursue careers in the performing arts at a national level,” Mrs Liley said.“Past winners have used their bursaries as a launching pad into the industry, with many now professional actors, fulltime musicians and technical professionals,” she said. Past recipients have also appeared in the Empire Theatre’s major productions including Disney’s High School Musical, The Boy from Oz, The Wizard of Oz, Hairspray and most recently The Phantom of the Opera. The Empire Theatres Foundation provides funding for courses in a range of disciplines including dance, acting, instrumental music, singing and musical theatre. Since 2010, bursaries have also been provided in more diverse fields such as jazz singing, composing and conducting, playmaking and rock school. The Empire Theatres Foundation Youth Bursaries are now open to any Australian citizen between the ages of 12 and 25 and applications close Friday 18 July at 4pm. For more information or to download an application form visit www.empiretheatre.com.au or call 4698 9938.

Council changes animal management local lawsSouthern Downs Regional Council has decided to change its animal management local laws so that people no longer need to have a permit for a second dog and to offer discounts on dog registration fees for desexed and microchipped dogs.Environmental Services Manager Tim O'Brien said Council decided to make the changes so that the local laws are practical and reflected community expectation."Council has decided that residents won't need to lodge a permit for a second dog unless their allotment is less than 450 square metres in area. This will mean the majority of dog owners will be able to keep a second dog if they choose."Council has also decided to streamline the dog registration process by introducing lifetime tags, opting for sturdy durable tags to be issued to residents and they will be sent yearly or three yearly registration reminders."As of January 2015 we will have online renewal of dog registrations through credit card payments or BPAY. Many residents and ratepayers like the convenience of online payments and we're pleased to bring dog registrations in line with other Council notices."Dog owners have another benefit as a result of recent Council decisions and that is an offer of a three year registration fee at no cost for all desexed and microchipped dogs registered in 2015 discount period."This is an incentive to have dogs desexed and microchipped and on Council's records as quickly as possible. We will need dog owners to provide suitable proof of both procedures.

"These changes are making dog ownership and registration easier within the SDRC area," he said.Anyone with questions about dog registration or ownership please call Council on 1300 MY SDRC or 1300 697 372.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKA traveling saleswoman is driving toward home in Arizona

when she sees an Indian woman hitchhiking.

She stops the car and the Indian woman gets in. After a bit of small talk, the Indian woman notices a brown bag on the front

seat.

"What's in the bag?", she asks.

"It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband".

The Indian woman is silent for a while, then nods and says, "you made a good trade".

Wattles Denied in a CliffhangerAfter ninety minutes & 34 seconds of rugby league that included an inspiring green & gold fightback, the ‘National Farmer’s Warehouse’ Wattles ‘Warriors’ fell short of a fifth ‘Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy’ victory,

the Gatton ‘Hawks’ winger Cameron Nicholls manipulating a loose ball to the tryline to score the match winning touchdown in Golden Point time, and snatch the prestigious trophy winning 37 – 33.While the ‘Warriors’ were denied the respected silverware, sister club the Millmerran ‘Rams’ defeated the Gatton 'Hawks' in the Berghofer Cup Second Division President's Cup final 30 - 16, thus remaining undefeated so far in the 2014 TRL season. 'Rams' tries were scored by Sam Martin 2, Ashley Klein, Jayden Karaka, Steve Sauverain, & Mitchell Thorburn and three goals by Alex Sinclair. The undefeated Gatton reserve grade side held off a determined challenge by the Oakey ‘Bears’ to win the ‘Toowoomba Toyota’ Presidents Cup 34 – 22, while the Highfields ‘Eagles’ were to strong in the end for the Dalby ‘Diehards’ in the ‘Hutchinsons Builders’ Under 18 President’s Cup winning 28 – 24.Some pre-match upheaval saw the experienced threequarter Dan Manley withdraw injured & bench forward Simon Ryan also a late absentee.Powerful runner Justin Van Der Poel and talented front-rower Carl Gale were called into the Trophy Final seventeen. Captain and half back Matt Duggan was an injury concern in the days before the contest, but ran on, as did Mitch Koina who has struggled of late with a hamstring problem. Coach Duggan was also pleased to see the return of exciting young five-eight Brodie Ciesiolka and giant front row enforcer Michael Bermingham who missed the ‘Warriors’ last start. Bermingham,

who impressed in his second top grade league match, can boast family links with the legendary Mick Madsen whose name is one that adorns the Madsen Rasmussen Trophy.Wattles were gunning for the mid-season trophy that departed their glory box eight years back, while also keen to return to the winner’s circle after their last outing loss to the Dalby ‘Diehards’ at Dalby. After winning the first eight of their fixtures in the 2014 Toowoomba Rugby League premiership race, they are now coming to grips with two successive losses in as many weeks. Both of those losses have featured sterling Wattles comebacks after the games seemed all but lost, but alas in both cases it wasn’t quite enough to have them ahead at the full time hooter. The past week of hype in the build up to the 34th ‘Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy’ set the scene for a ‘clash of the Titans’ encounter at Clive Berghofer Stadium, and the ‘Warriors’ and the ‘Hawks’ didn’t disappoint. In what is rated as one of, if not, the best Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy final since the award’s inception in 1980, indeed the crowd were treated to a game that had it all. Brilliant play, amazing tries, slamming defence, marathon like performances, desperation, a fighting comeback, and a ‘take no prisoners’ final ten minutes of extra time that had both sides draining their arsenal of players, skills & plays as they fought for victory.Utility player Ryan Duggan proved his value in the Wattles mechanism posting first points in the twelfth minute, allowing his side a 6 – 0 lead after a somewhat lethargic start. The try inspired the ‘Warriors’ and minutes later in form back-rower

Brod Koina found himself over the Gatton try line two metres in from touch on the southern end of the paddock, but unable to ground the ball due to some desperation from the ‘Hawks’.The Koina clan kept the family momentum flowing though, the heading to the opposite side of the field where accomplished touchdown exponent, centre Joel Koina, scored in the eighteenth minute after a delicate incision in the opposition defensive line, including an elusive ‘in and away’.Wattles were just settling in to achieving their lead, what appeared a steady 12 – 0 advantage, when scheming five-eighth Ashley Boney hit the ‘Hawks’ ignition switch, scoring a clever try after finding room wide. Hard running Gatton forward Josh Mildren added his side’s second touchdown soon after, the scoreboard favouring Wattles though at half time 12 – 10.Gatton were carrying out some promising raids in Wattles territory in the later stages of the first half, and it was only some outstanding Wattles’ defence that kept them at bay.

Soon after a disagreement festered into a fracas that resulted in Referee Dan Ryan placing Gatton front-rower Denis Burgoyne & Wattles centre Joel Koina on report. With the halftime hooter being warmed up to be activated, Brodie Ciesiolka found himself some space and sliced through the defence, only to be caught in a tackle with the try line in reach. As he reached out to ground the ball while getting plenty of attention, alas the pill was spilled. After the Joel Koina try conversion by their skipper Matt Duggan midway through the first stanza, the ‘Warriors’ endured a 45 minute point’s drought as they battled to find their proven attacking brilliance and stay in touch with Gatton. The fifty minutes of play from the second half restart, which included a little over ten minutes of Golden Point extra time, was some of the best to be seen at Clive Berghofer Stadium according long established Toowoomba League disciples.Wattles frustrated themselves and Coach Luke Duggan as they slipped into a ‘switch off’ period that was relished by the ‘Hawks’ who proceeded to run in four touchdowns in the initial twenty minutes of the second stanza.Gatton put their best foot forward in the 46th minute when Jesse Godwin found plenty of daylight through some skinny Wattles right side defence, the resulting try lifting the ‘Lockyer Lads’ into the lead, 14 – 12. Soon after, a fleet of foot Ashley Boney found a track through the ‘Warriors’ defence arcing around to score easily from fifteen minutes out.‘Hawks’ lock forward Doug Asiata, who was later named ‘Man of the Match’, crossed for a four-pointer, as did centre Christian Thompson to have their side leading 32 – 12, and looking like winners with twenty minutes remaining. But!!! it’s never over until it’s over, as Wattles were about to prove in an amazing dash home where they scored twenty unanswered points in nine minutes to snatch the lead and come within a hairs breadth of a Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy victory. The ‘Warriors’ were stung into action after bustling centre Justin Van Der Poel scored in the 63rd minute, and those in green & gold responded by regrouping to score four tries to draw level with the ‘Hawks’ 32 - 32 in what was an amazing fightback. Wattles back-rower Brod Koina in a race for the loose ball with a Gatton opponent in last Sunday’s

Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy final at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium.

For Wattles, Matt Duggan, winger Robbie Moore & Joel Koina followed the Van Der Poel example in finding Gatton’s tryline. With just three minutes remaining on the match clock halfback Matt Duggan kicked a field goal to see Wattles ease ahead 33 – 32. The security of the single point lead in the dying moments of the game was short lived, Ashley Boney answering the challenge with his own successful field goal to again lock the scoreboard, now at 33 all. After ten minutes of Golden Point time and two unsuccessful field goal attempts by Matt Duggan the score remained at 33 all. The ‘Hawks’ fans went into over drive less than a minute after the commencement of the second ten minutes of Golden Point extra time, ‘Warriors’ fullback Jackson Green and Robbie Moore desperately trying to field a Gatton kick that appeared to be evolving in to a ’40 – 20’, the ball batted infield into the flight path of winning try scorer Nicholls who was on the fly.In what was a very physical match, both sides saw their injury list grow, next week Wattles will be without hooker Dylan Ebneter & back-rower Mitch Koina with leg injuries, and winger Jimmy Johnson with a shoulder injury after he was upended in a suspect tackle in the fifteenth minute. If the ‘Warriors’ crowded injury ward continues to grow, their first grade front-row star Dr. Pat Manley may have to stand down from playing duty to tend to the sick & injured of his team mates. While it's back to the drawing board for the 'Warriors' and Coach Duggan this week, he was very pleased with his team's commitment against Gatton. "We didn't get much ball for a 20 minute period in the second half and it cost us, in patches we played well, we just need to do it for longer periods to beat the best teams in the comp".Gatton 37 (Ashley Boney 2, Josh Mildren, Jesse Godwin, Douglas Asiata, Christian Thompson, Cameron Nicholls tries; Ashley Boney 3, Aaron Werth goals; Ashley Boney field goal) defeated Wattles 33 (Joel Koina 2, Robbie Moore, Justin Van Der Poel, Matt Duggan, Ryan Duggan tries; Matt Duggan 4 goals & a field goal).Next week Wattles seniors take on the Southern Suburbs ‘Tigers’, preceded by Wattles juniors matching up against the Border ‘Bears’ and Warwick’s Eastern Suburbs ‘Hornets’ at Platz Oval in a rugby league Super Saturday.Wattles junior & senior clubs will team up providing a rugby league extravaganza at Platz Oval commencing at 9.00 am through to 8.00 pm sponsored by the Bank of Queensland - Warwick, Glenmar Fuels - Allora and Creed and Lang Commercial Printers - Warwick.Wattles senior club will also be hosting their annual Ladies Day, “Ladies in Winter” from 2.30 pm.
