QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHEEP DOG TRIALS AT ALLORA SHOWGROUNDS TODAYThe Qld Championship Sheepdog Trials are once again being held in Allora. This is the third year that Allora has had the honour of hosting the states most prestigious trial. The trial commences TODAY, Thursday, 3 October, and will run through until Sunday, 6 October. Two rings will be operating for the duration of the trial with over three hundred runs expected over the four days. The Top Twenty and final will commence on Sunday morning. Mr Mike Condon from Glen Innes (NSW) will judge the Open event with Michael Rigby from Ilfracombe (QLD) judging the Novice. Local judge Alan Thornton of Clifton will judge our Encourage trial. We would like to invite all Allora and local residents to come along and see some of the country's best working sheepdogs and their handlers in action. The Allora Show Society will be operating a canteen so come along for some refreshments. Also a big thank you to the Allora business community for their continued support. It is wonderful that a small community can be so supportive. Without community support we would be unable host the trials.

The Man from Hendon Desertby B– SH– – Balladeer: A. D. Denton

with apologies to the late, great "Banjo" Paterson.

There was humour out at Hendon, The smile displaced the frown; For the noise upon the rooftops Meant the rain was coming down. So Lord above we laud you, For making the dry time pass, And soon we'll look with pleasure At the greening of the grass.

And the horses too, and sheep'll Turn their backs on people, As they chew each morsel slowly; For sadly have they waited For this time to come to pass, When they can ramble at their leisure, Thru the greening of the grass.

ABOVE: Bill Davidson (NSW) working Cooks Trickie.INSET: Blackbrook Marnie owned by Margaret Donovan from Hodgson Vale.

Clifton Country Week -Only a few weeks to the start of Clifton Country Week 2013. No doubt everyone is watching the weather. There are some very keen gardeners in town and water all you like, there's nothing like a drop of rain to really lift your plants. Let's hope for a few drops very soon.If you haven't booked a space for the Ute & Boot Markets, I suggest you do so soon. This is a very popular market and a good fundraising exercise for schools, and churches, so plenty of home cooking guaranteed. (Marion Batten 4697 3313 will be happy to take a booking). $10 a stall. We have a Garden Guru at the Iris & Rose Show on Sunday 20th. It can be mongrel weather at times and the Guru may be just the person to get you on the right track. The Men's Shed gents will be on hand to inform you of their plans in Allora too. Clifton Dabblers will show how they do a few crafts.Schools in the district will be decorating shop posts in King, Clark and East Streets to "Colour up Clifton". A little different to the usual shop windows so it should be good. The Photography Competition is going well and entries are starting to come in. It takes the right person in the right place at the right time to get the right photo. For the toddlers we have a Teddy Bears Picnic on Sunday morning in Pioneer Park followed by a Decorated Bicycles and Scooters Comp. Our Butter Factory Museum has opened their doors for 25 years now and will be celebrating with rope-making,

Allora’s Past 50 years ago October 1963SPECIAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting of the Spring Creek School of Arts will be held in the Spring Creek Hall on

Monday, 28th October. Would the residents of Spring Creek and district please attend this

meeting.Business: To discuss closing of hall.

Graham Stallman, Hon. Sec.

Allora’s Past 75 years agoMr. Henry Geitz died early yesterday. He was born 60 years ago in the district, and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Geitz. His chief interest was farming and in company with his brothers, worked

the property selected by their father in 1878 when the Allora Exchange Lands were thrown open. He was elected to the Allora Shire Council in 1927 and with the exception of the period from 1930-1933 was a member for No. 1 Division until his death. In the last term he had been deputy chairman. For many years he was chairman of the Allora Chamber of Commerce, and was a vice-president of the golf, vigoro, and rifle clubs. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, and chairman of the committee of management and the Kirk session. He also was a member of the committee of the Central Downs A. & H. Society. In his younger days Mr. Geitz was a sergeant-major of the 14th Light Horse regiment, and received the long service decoration.- The Courier-Mail 11/10/1938

Allora’s Past 150 years ago A public meeting was held in the Dalrymple Hotel, Allora, on Saturday last, the 26th September, having for its object the desirability of incorporating the township. Several resolutions in favour of the idea were passed unanimously, and the utmost harmony and fellowship seemed to prevail, when suddenly intelligence arrived that completely upset the proceedings of the meeting. It appeared that some ill-favoured black sheep in the community, not having a taste for public meetings, preferred a little quiet manipulation in the shape of housebreaking, and effected an entrance into the store of Dr. Ramsdale, and walked off with that gentleman’s cash box, which we are happy to state, contained only some two or three pounds and a few coppers. The cash box was found on the following morning not far from the store, and the thief, in order most probably to testify his aristocratic notions respecting petty larceny, left the browns in the box. - The North Australian 8/10/1863

Allora Mountain Field DayThe State Landcare Conference for 2013 concluded last Sunday in Warwick, and was judged an outstanding success. Allora Landcare Group (ALG) was selected as one of five sites for a field trip held on the Saturday afternoon of the proceedings. The members hosted twenty-six conference visitors, many coming from as far afield as the Torres Strait and Cooktown, to a walk around Allora Mountain Reserve. This was preceded

by a traditional afternoon tea of damper and golden syrup, provided by the ladies in the kitchen of the Railway Hotel, who again we must thank for a great job. The visitors were transported by bus from Warwick and it was pleasing to note that the new graded road to the reservoir level posed no problems. The ALG has spent a considerable period of time in the past months preparing the reservoir area for future visitors, travellers, and site-seers. Vehicle tracks have been mown, two picnic tables and seats have been constructed with two more planned, extensive planting of trees and shrubs has been undertaken (with the tree protectors easily visible from the highway), and copious mulching has occurred followed by generous watering. This latter activity could not have happened without the recent purchase of a you-beaut trailer with large water shuttle and pumping equipment and we thank Lindsay Ruhle from Ray Bunch Machinery in Warwick for his expert specifications, which guided our decisions during the purchase.

We should also note that 75 cubic metres of mulch was provided free of charge by Council and we thank them once again for their generosity. Many readers may have noticed two large Wedge-Tail Eagles in flight over the mountain for many months, regularly harassed by smaller birds, which makes for great theatre. We were delighted to discover their nest on the mountain during the field trip, after weeks of futile searching. This finding is even more significant as the nest contains a fledgling, already nearly one metre in size. We recommend that everyone keep an eye on the sky over the mountain in the near future as the parent birds nurture their “chick” as it begins to fly. A future development by ALG will be the printing of information brochures about the mountain, with particular reference to the flora and fauna. They will be in full colour and heavily illustrated. The design has been decided and it just remains for printing to occur. They will be placed at entry points to the reserve and will provide visitors with valuable insight into the remarkable diversity of the biomass on offer on the mountain. We can recommend the mountain as a place of solitude, inspiration and education. As one of the conference visitors remarked last Saturday, it is unusual for a town to have access to such a beautiful place literally on its doorstep. Please direct any correspondence or enquiries to the ALG Secretary, Pete Thomas at PO Box 57, Allora Q 4362, or [email protected] or 0419 724 025.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

The other day, my husband and I bought our small son a jigsaw to keep him

occupied while we went out.

Imagine our surprise when, four hours later, we came back to find that he had cut

his fingers off!!

The New Allora Cricket TeamFor the upcoming 2013/14 cricket season, Allora can look forward to the excitement of cricket being played in town almost every weekend, with the addition of the new ‘Railway Hotel Rascals’ cricket team. The new team will be made up predominately of Allora locals, of these half are what we call ‘experienced with age’ whist the other half are the younger generation; bursting with

potential and ready to run around for hours. As a new team, we know that our first season in the competition will be a tough one, and all the players are looking forward to this challenge and to be representing Allora. We would like to thank our sponsors, Darling Downs Insurance Brokers, Red Rooster and especially the great local sporting supporter, The Railway Hotel, for their support in helping set the team up financially. The new cricket season starts this weekend on Saturday the 5th, where the Railway Hotel Rascals are playing their first game at home, starting at 12:30pm on the Allora Oval, against the Sovereign Animals. We hope to see many of you down there! The Rascals are: Andrew Boal, Jake Christensen, Paul Christensen, Liam Duncan, Brodie Frizzell, Henry Gartery, Simon Gill, Brad Johnson, Liam Keating, Mick Kelk, Luke Kilah, James Moore, Simon Moore, Joe Morris, Nick Morris, Nat Simpson, David Watson and future players; Tom Morris and Nick Van Der Poel.Have a great one out there,

Brad Johnson

Allora Golf NotesThis week in the Golf world, Allora Golf Club will be taking on Clifton Golf Club in the annual AllClif Shield. This is a 4BBB stab event that

will tee off around 11am on Saturday. All members with a handicap are asked to be available for this as the more players we have the more chance of a higher score. Sunday will the Monthly Mug sponsored by the Railway Hotel. This is a 12 noon tee off as per usual. The course is looking great, a big THANKS to all who put in the time to make it as it is. Also on 9th November will be the Beetle and Daves golf day. This is a great day with Golf and Bowls. Remember your sand buckets - to play is to live.

The Tradition Continues St. Patrick’s Parish Fete A long standing community tradition continues on Friday evening October 18th in the St. Patrick’s Annual Fete. Those attending will experience all the fun of a country fair, and it’s all happening in the grounds of St. Patrick’s School at Allora, on the corner of Warwick & Arnold Streets. St. Patrick’s Annual Fete kicks off at 5.00 pm, with stalls aplenty including plants, the traditional bottle stall, popcorn, cakes & sweets, barbecue and a licensed bar.So much to entertain the younger folk with face painting, Glo Products, a jumping castle, merry-go-round and rides on “Li’l Squirt” the fire truck. Lyn-D-Jo Boutique will feature a fashion parade, and there’s a great line up of entertainment including school performances.Viv’s Farmyard Shearing Shed & Farm Animals are returning to this year’s Fete, with the collection of lambs, goats, ducklings, chickens & piglets, along with Viv’s sheep shearing demonstration all on show again this year. “The aim is to have fun while learning, bringing back memories for the mature aged and show the young people, close up, the fun of farm animals” says Viv.

A reminder to those that fancy themselves as sheaf pitchers of note that the St. Patrick’s Fete is again hosting the Queensland Sheaf Pitching Championships. Allora’s Jason Denny upheld his reputation as a champion sheaf pitcher when he beat a lengthy field to snatch last year’s Queensland Sheaf Pitching Championship, retaining the title he won in 2011.As the feature event of the annual Fete, the prestigious Queensland Sheaf Pitching Championships attracted a hefty field of talented challengers in 2012. The Open grade of the State Championship saw some fierce competition with Hendon competitor Scott Sparksman finishing a very close second, and veteran former title holder John Maher in third place. The Juniors Section saw Goomburra’s Charlie Parker emerge with the Champion title, ahead of Tom Higgins in second place and Nick Morris finishing third. With a little over a fortnight until the State level test of strength, some of the competitors planning to take part in scheduled events will no doubt be considering a little training. The sheaf pitching is a tradition synonymous with the popular Fete,

pitchers testing their brawn as they attempt to hurl a 4 kg straw stuffed bag over a horizontal bar above the competitor's head with a pitch fork. The best pitchers the district can muster will gather on the night competing in open, junior & ladies categories. It you fancy a toss in the St. Patrick’s 2012 Queensland Sheaf Pitching titles, nominate by calling Jason Denny on 0448 612 799.The Anything Goes team auction and races provides an exciting conclusion to St. Patrick’s Fete, and it sure isn’t for the faint hearted, Last year eighteen teams entered and veteran race caller Peter Cavanagh is confident the field will be as big in 2013. The fearsome Joe’s Jellybeans (Joe Morris, Charlie Parker, Kimberley Thorne & Kyle Thorne) crossed the line to take first place honours and share the $200 prize money. It’s time for those up to the challenge to round up a team of four in preparation for this year’s heart stopping event.
