Australians still failing the hand-washing testWhile there is evidence that Australians do know how to wash their hands correctly, a 2009 observational study of 200 people by the Food Safety Information Council revealed that 29 per cent of men and 8 per cent of women still failed to wash their hands after using the bathroom in the food hall of a shopping centre. As Australian Food Safety Week 2010 approaches, Southern Downs residents are being urged to take the hand-washing message on board and better national statistics. Southern Downs environmental health officer, Cheryl Spencer was shocked that there had not been any statistically valid improvement since a 2002 observational study, where 27 per cent of men and 9 per cent of women failed to wash their hands.“Correct hand washing is an important public health issue as you might find that you and your family may not only get less food poisoning but also less viral diseases like colds and flu,” Ms Spencer said.“We need to take the time to wash our hands with soap and running water and to dry thoroughly, and to make sure that the rest of our family does as well.”

Letters From LesA GREAT FETE!What a great Fete we had last week. A team of men to set up, and a team of ladies to make it happen!

The great thing about a Fete is the getting together and the doing of things together. We had Presbyterian Clowns with a message, Catholic Dancing Kids, a School Band, Balladeers on the verandah, and the Anglican Church Ladies Singing Group, and lots lots more. Happy faces all.

The Psalmist says in Psalm 133, “How good and pleasant it is when people live together in unity”.

Fete’s make money and we did well, but it’s not the money but the people that make for happiness. The love of money is the root of all evil says the scriptures, but the gathering of money for good and godly purposes is a good thing.

This week we have the Catholic Fete. May it be just as good. May God and good sunshine shine upon it.

Les Monaghan

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKA woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.

"What are you doing?" She asked.

"Hunting Flies" He responded.

"Oh. Killing any?" She asked.

"Yep, 3 males, 2 females," he replied.

Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell?"

He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone."

Australian Food Safety Week, to be held 8 to 14 November, is focused on highlighting good food safety practices such as hand-washing and debunking incorrect food safety beliefs held by consumers. This year’s theme is Myths and Mastery, with consumers urged to share “family” food safety myths or mastery for the chance to win prize packs. Myths and mastery stories can be sent to [email protected], with the best stories to be published on the website and used for media purposes.Ms Spencer offered the following tip on washing hands correctly.“Remember the 20/20 rule of 20 seconds washing with soap and 20 seconds drying thoroughly,” she said.“Wet your hands and rub together well to build up a good lather with soap as the suds help to carry the bugs away. “Do this for at least 20 seconds and don’t forget to wash between your fingers and under your nails, rinsing well under running water to remove the bugs and dirt from your hands. Dry your hands thoroughly on a clean towel for at least 20 seconds.”For further information, check out the Food Safety Information Council’s website at www.foodsafety.asn.au, or talk to one of Council’s environmental health officers.

Allora’s Past 100 years ago November 1910New Post Office

The local Post Office staff is now firmly established in its new headquarters and the transfer appears to have been effected without a hitch. While there is little of the beautiful or artistic in the architecture of the building as viewed from the outside, yet none the less the interior is roomy, well ventilated and extremely well lighted, all these things being worthy of commendation when the comfort of the staff and the convenience of the public are considered.Following the calling of tenders by the Public Works Department, the old post Office was purchased by Mr. T. W. Brandon for the price of £20/10/0 and shifted to a site adjoining the Warwick road.(The new Post Office was destroyed by fire in April 1926 and the present building was erected in early 1928)

Allora’s Past 150 years ago November 1860The Moreton Bay Courier 1st November 1860

To Let or SellThat new and commodious building in the township of Allora, on a direct line of road between Drayton and Warwick, and intended for an Hotel, will be completed in a few days and will contain three large rooms, and six bedrooms, besides bar and landlord’s apartments, with kitchen and stables detached. The situation and other advantages cannot be equalled on the Downs.Apply on the premises to DONALD CLARK; at Toowoomba to Messrs. GRISBROOK & ROBINSON; and Brisbane to Messrs GEO. RAFF & CO.(Scotsman, Donald Clark, came to Queensland from Victoria, and in June 1860, selected 149 acres of land in five blocks to the near north of the town. He built the area’s first sawn timber cottage on the site where Norco Rural’s shed stands today. In October 1860 he built the Dalrymple Hotel near the corner of Raff and Drayton Streets. He had sold the hotel by 1862 and worked in the Goondiwindi district before selecting a large property at Yandilla. He died there in 1903 and is buried in the Millmerran cemetery).

Allora woman meets US pen pal of 50 yearsDo you remember how we communicated before the internet and cell phones and instant contact? Back in 1960 the world was a much different place! For two young girls, 13000 miles apart from each other, a friendship that would be lifelong was started with just the stroke of a pen.Kathryn Gann, a city girl from North Providence in USA and Wendy Ardrey, from a farming family here in Allora still are Pen Pals to this day.As was the way back then, contact was given to Wendy by her cousin and she started writing to Kathryn. “As children we would buy the thinnest airmail paper and write pages and pages’”. They would try writing on both sides of the paper and hope you could read it. “A large letter would be crammed into an envelope for half an ounce, the maximum weight for a stamp in those days”.A special Christmas present around the time they were 10 was a phone call to each other. “Back then, you needed to call the International Operator and make a reservation. This booking was made in September for the Christmas call. It was expensive and not always clear, $20 would pay for 3 minutes and then the operator would cut you off”As time passed, the two ladies shared pictures and memories together as they came to learn more about the special bond that has kept them in touch all these years. To Kathryn, the most impressionable letter from Wendy mentioned the JFK assassination, “I remember her writing something about a ‘bloke’ that killed him” - “Bloke” what is a bloke she wondered? This letter was eventually used as a Girl Scout project about her pen pal in Australia. These two women, have lived different lives and yet are kindred spirits. They met for the first time in 1983, 23 years after they began writing and sharing the same values and morals and many times they have found that they were both sharing the same haircut and colour!

A little concerned they would not get on when first they met, their Mothers made the following comments: In USA, Kathryn’s mother said “planes do fly in both directions” and in Australia, Wendy’s mother said “you can get along with anybody for two weeks”. As mothers know, there was never a worry then or now and one trip, Kathryn asked why Wendy was wearing her sweater? Wendy replied ‘this is my sweater, my mum made it for me” and so was the case for Kathryn, their mothers had both knitted their daughters the same sweaters albeit on different continents. Wendy has contacted the Guinness Book of World Records to see if they had outlasted any other pen pal pair, but found there have been two other women who had written for 77 years, so as Wendy says, “We still have got a way to go”.Without question, as the two ladies sat comfortably on the couch in Kathryn’s home in North Providence, there is an uncanny resemblance and a distinct sense of kinship. These days there are a variety of ways they communicate: cell phone, the Internet, occasional video calls, and as always, snail mail still is part of their perennial friendship. Kathryn said “I try not to over-think it, it was just meant to be”.

Allora Eleven Geared Up For MaryvaleThe Allora “Foodworks” Eleven skipper Cameron Masters will return this weekend to bolster his side after their 49 run loss on home turf to “RSL Diggers” in their last outing on October 23rd. The Allora side was short staffed against “Diggers”; however the “Diggers” side also took the field two players down. The Allora side to take on Maryvale at Warwick Cricket Association head-quarters Slade Park in Warwick, will line up similar to their last out-ing with the inclus-ion of Masters, and experienc-ed hands Luke Murdoch, Adam Vie thee r and Brady Glass. Both M u r d o c h a n d Glass are yet to run on for Allora in this new season, there experience in the centre will be invaluable as Allora forage for a second win of the season. This weekend’s opponents Maryvale are level second with “CSD Criterion” on the WCA premiership ladder currently, and were victorious over “RSL Diggers” by seven wickets in their last start. On that form this is not a match Allora can take lightly. Adam May will play a leading role in Allora’s performance, and can boast impressive form with the bat with scores of 25 & 79 in his two club appearances this season. Classy left arm medium pacer Andrew Petersen, who impressed against “Diggers” with 2 for 28, will be an absentee as will right arm

match. Frizzell, a “Darling Downs & South West Queensland” representative this season, will

line up with the Allora “Foodworks” senior grade side when they take on Maryvale at Warwick’s

Slade Park on Saturday.

batsman Justin Briggs. Cameron Masters bowling stocks boast some real firepower though including outstanding all rounder Adam May taking the challenge up to the Maryvale batsman as he opens Allora’s bowling. May will be supported by Willowvale based right arm medium pacer Kris McLennan who collected 2 for 46 in his last start, talented young colt Lauchlan Hoey and experienced campaigner Travis McMicking. An added bonus for Allora is the inclusion of young rising star Brodie Frizzell. Frizzell debuted in the Allora Foodworks side last season, and took an impressive 2 for 24 with his fast right arm bowling in the season opener against “Colts”. Frizzell recently gained selection in the “Darling Downs & South West Queensland” representative cricket side to contest the State Championships at Bundaberg later this year. Frizzell appears a natural with the ball and willow, starting playing cricket as a twelve year old, he has played representative cricket for the past three years, and this year will be his second wearing “Darling Downs & South West Queensland” colours. The talented quick took his best figures with the ball two weeks back in Warwick Junior Cricket fixtures with a fiery session reaping the amazing figures of four wickets for one run off only two overs. As a willow wielder he has a highest score of 52 off just 23 balls. Frizzell opened the batting innings with Sean Coker in his only senior grade match for Allora this season, and also shared the new ball with Adam May. The young 15 year old certainly adds firepower to the Allora line up.The Allora “Foodworks” Cricket team to play Maryvale at Slade Park on Saturday commencing at 12.30 pm is: Cameron Masters (c), Adam May, Luke Murdoch, Brady Glass, Travis McMicking, Kris McLennan, Steve Bolzan, Lauchlan Hoey, Jordan Henry, Brodie Frizzell, Adam Vietheer. All inquiries to Glyn Rees, 0417 765 801.
