Expressions Called for new RADF CommitteeThree new committee members are being sought to join the Southern Downs Regional Council Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Committee. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a Queensland Government and Southern Downs Regional Council partnership to support local arts and culture.RADF Committee Chair, Cr Mally McMurtrie is looking forwarding to receiving nominations and is keen for the three new committee members to build on the skills of an enthusiastic team.“We are looking for interested community members, who have a passion for the arts and culture, in our wonderfully creative region,” she said.Cr McMurtrie said that the primary responsibilities of committee members include:• Attend and participate in RADF meetings – generally two

rounds per financial year• Assess RADF applications and outcome reports• Ensure that the funding allocation is aligned with RADF

principles, eligibility criteria and the priorities of Southern Downs Regional Council’s cultural plans and policy

• Contribute to the RADF annual bidding process• Participate in RADF Committee training.Council is seeking two new committee members from the southern end of the region and one new member from the northern end.The RADF Program, established in 1991 is a highly successful state and local government partnership that supports professional artists and arts practitioners living in regional Queensland. Expressions of Interest will close at 5pm on Monday, 6 September 2010. ST. PATRICK’S PARISH “views from the pews”:This Sunday children from our faith community will receive the sacraments of Confirmation and 1st Communion during a special Mass at 9.30am. We congratulate these children and their families for undertaking the preparation and commitment to participate in this tradition of the Catholic faith. The Eucharistic celebration is often referred to as being a central part of the Catholic tradition. It is a time when we share in our communion with Christ and our communion with one another, as members of the ‘body of Christ’.Many would be aware that Mary MacKillop will soon be canonised as Australia’s first Saint. Many would also be aware that there is a connection between Mary MacKillop and Allora through the Sisters of St Joseph, the Australian religious order which Mary established. The Josephite Sisters have had a continuous presence in the Allora community since 1916. To commemorate this unique moment in our history, the parish is hosting a one day retreat on Saturday September 11.This special day of prayer and reflection will be led by Sr Monica Cavanagh rsj, “a time to listen to the whisperings of God through the life and spirituality of Mary MacKillop”. The day features four sessions and concludes with the celebration of Eucharist at 4.30pm. The retreat experience is open to all and an invitation is extended to any member of the Allora community. Session three has a special focus on the connection with Allora. For more information about session times and content please pick up a copy of the Retreat Program from St Patrick’s Church.

Allora State School Spring FairThe P&C Association of the Allora State School have been undertaking fundraising activities, with their project being to aircondition the Prep classroom. So far, they have held a Wine & Cheese night and sold Footy Doubles for the last two State of Origins. Their next major fundraiser is a Spring Fair on 11 September, to be held at the Allora Showgrounds, from 9am to 2pm. So far, twenty-five stallholders have booked in, with food and drink stalls operating throughout the day. Tickets for raffles and dollar boards will also be on sale. An invitation is extended to the Allora community to attend this fun day.

Water marks and information wanted for Condamine flood studyResidents living on the Condamine floodplain will receive a flood information survey in the mail over the coming week. Mayor Ron Bellingham said that Council has commissioned Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) to undertake the Condamine River and Tributaries Flood Study. “This study will focus on the risk of flooding in Warwick, Killarney, Allora, Yangan, Emu Vale, Tannymorel and Pratten, as well as rural areas along the floodplain,” Cr Bellingham said.“The project aims to develop computer flood models of the Condamine River, quantify and map flood risks within the study area, reduce community vulnerability to flooding, and raise community awareness of flooding risks.”SKM are looking for information on previous floods in the Condamine River and tributary creeks and residents are being invited to share flooding information such as records of recent

floods, as well as recorded flood levels and property marks with the study team. Cr Bellingham urged residents with historical flooding information, to fill out the Residents’ Survey and return it to Council by 31 September, 2010 or to contact the survey team. Initially, SKM will collate data on flooding in the area (topographical survey, bridge data etc). This will also include collecting information from the community on previous flooding within the study area. SKM will then use the collated information to build a flood model to represent flooding behaviour in the study area. Based on the flood model, maps of areas at risk of flooding will be produced and presented to the community. SKM will then work with Council and the community to develop options to reduce community vulnerability to flooding within the area. For more information, contact Tracy Vellacott on 4661 0305 or visit www.southerndowns.qld.gov.au and follow the link to the Flood Study. Residents are also welcome to complete the survey online.

ALLORA COMBINED CHURCHES (Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian and Uniting)Members of this group wish to place on record their sadness at the passing of long-term member, Glennis Stallman. Glennis was a valued member of our group from its very inception. She had been our primary contact with St. David's community when we were planning our various combined activities such as the Christmas Carols, Lenten and Advent studies, the Palm Sunday procession of witness and the World Day of Prayer. We will miss her enthusiasm, her commitment and her friendship. We will honour her memory in our own continued commitment to Ecumenism.

Allora Golf Notes29 August 2010

The competition at Allora last Sunday was a Single Stroke event and it was

good to see the fields becoming larger with the warmer weather. It was also nice to see that the club may have attracted another lady member. The winner with a great score of 60 net was Bill Murdoch. That’s two wins in a row for Bill who seems to have struck a very rare patch of form. Bill’s score was four shots clear of Kev Harrison and Kel Strange who both finished on 64 net and had to be separated by a countback. Kel had the better back nine and emerged as runner-up. Pin shots went to Kev Harrison (8th and 14th), Adam Cummins on the 4th and Kel Strange on the 5th. For the second week in a row, the Eagles Nest went off when Adam May produced a great shot on the 7th. Unfortunately, timing in golf is everything. One week the Eagles Nest is worth forty-two balls, the next week, only two. Congratulations to all the winners.Next Sunday’s (5 September) event will be the Commercial Hotel Monthly Mug generously sponsored by Nick and Ann-Marie from the Commercial. Tee-off will be from 12.00 midday. All players are welcome. Don’t forget your sand buckets and remember - to play is to live.

Junior Warriors win to progress to the Grand Finals. The under 13 and 14 Wattles Junior Rugby League teams both won preliminary final games on Saturday and will join the 12’s in the quest for premierships this Saturday. Wattles will host Grand Final day for the Warwick and District Juniors at Platz Oval so let’s ensure a big crowd of supporters is present to cheer on the Warriors as it would be many years since the club has enjoyed having three teams in the biggest game of the year.Wildcat Earthmoving U13’s - The 13’s were too good for Collegians winning 16 to 6 after leading by 12 to nil at half time. Great defence was the key to the win and the team deserves its place in the Grand Final. Wattles scored after five minutes of play when Blades pounced on a loose ball over the line to touch down. Both teams traded territory for the next eleven minutes until Somes started a raid down the left side, passed to Lewis who did some magnificent work in traffic to get an offload to Lack who beat three defenders and sprinted for the corner for the Warriors to lead 8 nil. With four minutes till half time Somes again made a bust for Morris to back up and send the classy Lack in to score again. The second half was a struggle for both teams and the Warrior defence was superb. After four minutes Lack scored his third try when he backed up a Morris incisive run and beat defenders on his way to the line. Collegians scored their only points with four minutes left on the clock but it was too late and Wattles finished the game on top. Best for Wattles were Somes, Morris, Neilsen, Munro and Lack. The tackle count was led by Morris with 16, Neilsen and Somes 15 and Sharman, Bashford and Blades. Jordan Lewis was terrific and Bashford played with great courage well above his

weight. Christensen and Ryan took the ball forward in the ruck and Munro was terrific at fullback. It was a very good team effort and we all wish the team the best of luck this weekend.Rod Frahm Real Estate U14's - The 14’s won a nail biter by 24 to 20 only clinching the win with four minutes to go. Collegians started the better and led the Warriors by 16 to nil after fourteen minutes. Dropped ball in Wattles territory did not help the cause and it looked like a tough day was ahead. The team rallied and the injection of Denny made an immediate impact. With six minutes to go to half time James and Denny set the Dragons on the back foot with great forward runs for the ball to then be sent left for Sharman to score a great try to give the Warriors a boost. Soon after Denny again stamped his mark with a 70 metre bust to score under the posts for Sharman to add the extras in the shadows of half time. The Warriors were back in the game and the second half was a tight affair. In the first minute Hibberd finished off some great work on the inside to score a super try which Sharman converted, but took a knock and had to leave the field. Rubie and Henry then controlled the play and in the ninth minute Sharman scored his second after some good forward running early in the tackle count. The Dragons were not done with and answered with a try of their own to level the scores at 20 all with nine minutes to go. With the game in the balance the crowd got behind the Warriors. They rallied and with four minutes left on the clock Sharman scored his third try which was the match winner. Best for Wattles were the workaholic Morris, powerful Denny and Sharman with Rubie, Cavanagh, Hibberd until injured and Henry always trying hard. Willett, Hoey, Ranger and Brown played well when on the field and Wright at fullback made no mistakes. They are now in the Grand Final and all Wattles supporters wish them well on Saturday. The first game on Grand Final day will be the under 11 Grand Final between Millwood and Goondiwindi and it commences at 9 am. Match times for the Wattles games will be given out at training this week. GO the WARRIORS!
