COMBINED CHURCHES OF ALLORA - Week of Christian Unity: 5th to 12th JuneThe call for unity this year comes from Jerusalem, the mother church, to churches all over the world. Mindful of its own divisions and its own need to do more for the unity of the Body of Christ, these Christian churches of various denominations call all Christians to re-discover the values that bound together the early Christian communities. This is the challenge, to make this week of prayer an occasion to work for a genuine ecumenism grounded in the experience of the early Church. It is a call to remember a time when the Christian church was still one.The churches of Jerusalem invite their sisters and brothers around the world to join with them in prayer as they struggle for justice and peace for all. St. Patrick's Catholic Church is the host church for 2011 and a short prayer service will begin at 6.45pm, immediately after Mass, with fellowship and supper to follow in the Parish Meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Just come.

Allora RSL Stalwart HonouredMr. Jim Gwynne, aged 93, was presented with his 50-year service award of the Returned Services League by a past president of the Western District branch of the RSL, Mr. Fred Carey, after 67 years of service to the local sub-branch. The Allora sub-branch of the R. S. S. A. I. L. A. was formed at a meeting held in the town on the 27th August 1918. Mr. Gwynne joined the sub-branch on his return to Allora in 1919 after four years overseas service with the 5th Australian Light Horse. He soon became an active member, first serving on the entertainment committee. Jim Gwynne was presented with his life membership of the RSL movement in 1956 after serving for many years at a local and district level. He served as president of the Allora sub-branch for 22 years.

In a match lasting three hours, Mesdames Gibson and Crozier of Toowoomba defeated the local pairing of Mesdames Sapsford and Thomas 26 – 19, in the Darling Downs doubles championships held on the Allora Croquet Club green. This is the first year that the championships have been held, and the competition featured teams from Toowoomba, West

Toowoomba, Warwick, Pittsworth and Allora clubs.

Allora’s Past 100 years ago June 1911English History Celebrated

Sunday last, 18th June, being Waterloo Day, many loyal Allora St. Georgians, to the number of nearly 40, assembled around the flagstaff at the old State school and sang the National Anthem. Following this, Mr. R. L. Jackson the worthy president of the branch, gave a short discourse on the historical events leading up to the famous battle and of the battle itself, illustrating his remarks with admirably executed sketches and maps of the locality. It was a lucid description of what one of our greatest poets spoke of as “that world earthquake, Waterloo”.

FootballLast Saturday the Rangers Rugby Union Club visited Clifton and defeated the team of that town by three points to nil after a well contested game during which J. Maher crossed the line for Allora. Mr. Hawes was the referee. J. Buckley captained the visitors who were, at the conclusion of the game, entertained at the Royal Hotel, a very pleasant time being spent. Today’s match will be Clifton and Allora at the Allora recreation reserve. Play will commence at 4 p.m.

Deuchar-Massie "Biggest Morning Tea" The Deuchar-Massie Hall committee joined in with community organizations and clubs nation wide by hosting an “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” fund raiser in support of cancer research at the Hall on Sunday. Event coordinator Narelle Henry said the lunch and cuppa that evolved into a competitions afternoon was a wonderful success for such a vital cause. While the “Biggest Morning Tea” events were scheduled in recent weeks for a Thursday, the Hall event was set for a Sunday to maximize the attendance of all at work during the week. Mr’s Henry was

more than pleased that “thirty eight people attended enjoying a two course home cooked meal, the odd "cuppa”, a multi draw raffle and the afternoon of competitions raising $322.70 for cancer research”.The next big event at the Deuchar-Massie Hall is a riddler and sure to promote a lot of interest in the local community, especially for the amateur sleuths among us. If you fancy yourself as a Sherlock Holmes, Jessica Fletcher or Columbo, be sure to head to the Hall on the evening of July 30th for the “Murder Mystery Christmas In July”. “Santa”, not the real one, may have met with foul play, and some suspicious minds are needed to solve the riddle. The night is another fundraiser arranged by the active committee, raising money to put towards sealing the over 50 year old hall.

Letters to the Editor…Thank you for supporting our small school.

On behalf of the staff and students of Grantham State School, I am writing to you to express my heartfelt thanks for the very generous contribution you have made to our school in the wake of the recent floods. Your contribution will assist us in recovering from the devastating impact of the floods, which saw, not only a substantial property loss, but also tragic loss of life in many of our affected communities. Please rest assured that your contribution will be directed to supporting the learning needs of children from affected families and assisting them to regain some sense of normality. While the material damage can be repaired and possessions replaced, it is only within a stable environment that the emotional impact on children can be gradually addressed. Your contribution will help us create that stability in the school context.Your generosity and the generosity of many others in Queensland, across Australia and internationally is truly moving and quite humbling. As a school community we are strong, proud and resilient. This will continue to be our focus throughout 2011.

Thanks,Christie Minns, Principal

Match reports for 4.6.11, Wattles V Goondiwindi.U7: The Flynn Electrical sponsored U7 Wattles side demonstrated another great display of teamwork against the Goondiwindi team with all boys getting very involved in all facets of the game. Tries were scored by Liam Ruhle (3), Darcy Minnikin (2) and Michael Shingles (2), with Andrew Willett converting one goal in a good attacking game. Lachlan Peardon earned the Red Rooster Award for his usual heavy involvement, and William Ranger the Clifton Foodworks Award for great work at first receiver. Jed Esson was the captain this week and Lane Eastwell and Ruben Sullivan had great runs to set up the tries with Lachlan Quirk playing his part also. Great effort boys!U8: This week saw a solid effort from the Wattlebrae U8’s against the Goondiwindi Boars. Jacob Meddleton led the team and scored a try to go with some brilliant defence. Harry McMahon made some scything runs from dummy half resulting in 2 tries. A great team effort was made and there was some strong running and solid defence by Jackson Pogany and Ben Willett, with special mention going to Johnny Nolan for his best game yet in defence. Will Denny also posted his best game yet, scoring a great try and backing it up with some solid defence. Sam Scott, Rylay Lever, Elijah Hall, Michael Duncan and Lachlan Meacle all made a big impact in the game troubling the Boars across the park, with Michael managing to score a try for each team in his effort! Red Rooster Award: Will DennyClifton Foodworks Award: Sam ScottLuke Townsend Farrier Services U9: Jordan Gavin, Clayton Brady, and Jackson Dyball showed great improvement in defence in Saturday’s game, while Rylan Saville took a great leap forward in his defence and in running to the gaps. Joe Willett, Darby Peardon and Dan Brown deserved tries with their heavy workload throughout the game. Sean Bryson and Jaeden Ruhle did a great job taking the team forward from half back with their catching the ball on the move and nice quick deliveries. Hunter Hamblin, Jack Bashford, Declan Sullivan, Aaron Stace, Dustin Canning, Travis McDougall, Pat O’Brien and Jordan Stevenson showed their love for the game, and all players impressed us with consistently moving up together in defence. Great Job fellas!Red Rooster Award: Rylan SavilleClifton Foodworks Award: Jack Bashford.U10: This week the Superior Silage U10’s were very impressive – tackling well, especially when defending their line, to prove to all how good a side they are shaping up to be this year. The first receivers did a great job organising play with Kaleb Lever, Will Flynn and Joe McMahon getting good quick ball to the ball runners. Matisha Hounslow-Cullen showed plenty of skill around the park and deserved a try from dummy half. Matthew Christensen, Regan Eastwell, Tyler Gillam and Ty Norris showed us their ability to gain plenty of metres and Nathan Gibson and Ty Beckhouse did a great job on a number of occasions in defence. Luke Meara and Juston Free showed good hands off kick-offs and held their positions well throughout the game.Red Rooster Award: Regan EastwellClifton Foodworks: Matisha Hounslow-Cullen.U11: The Clifton Auto Ag. Repair U11 Warriors had a great game against the Goondiwindi Boars, taking the game to a 12 all draw. Chris O’Neill was again brilliant across the field, scoring one try and making 13 tackles and plenty of hit-ups. Our halves combination of Lachlan Henry and Nick Brown are playing superb football organizing the boys. A brilliant cross field kick from Nick Brown saw Darcy Brady chase hard and score out wide. Dlyan Hounslow-Cullen was very good out the back, while forwards Jacob Willett, Jackson O’Brien, Jacob Blades and Chris ran hard when called upon. Best tacklers

were Darcy, Dylan and Chris.Red Rooster: Lachlan HenryClifton Foodworks Award: Chris O’NeillU13: Under 13's Wattles 34 Goondiwindi 18. The old story, defence wins game, came to the fore on Saturday with the under 13's holding Goondiwindi scoreless for the 1st half. 20 boys rolled up their sleeves and put in a whole hearted effort. Led brilliantly from the front by Matt Timms and James Moore, Lachie McMahon and Jack Bannister made the transition from centre to 2nd row and worked well both sides of the ruck. All held together by lock forward Joe Willet. Harry Shooter gave Tom Morriss, Liam Duncan and Mason Blades great service from dummy half. Paul Christianson crossed in the 2nd minute to set the tone for the rest of the game. Matty Timms crossed 3 times and set one try up with barn storming 60 - 70 metre runs, proving unstoppable. Tommy Morris showed his elusiveness in the 20th minute, darting over for a try. It makes the coach's job a lot easier when you have 7 boys on the bench who can fill any roll on the field. Nathan Watson needs special mention for always giving 110% in attack and defence. Great team effort.U14: In a high quality, entertaining game, the Clifton Real Estate U14’s were unlucky to be defeated by the Goondiwindi team 22-26, after leading 12-6 at half-time. Joe Morris had an excellent game in both defence and attack, and was rewarded with two tries including a classy chip and chase effort. Matt Timbs and Max Somes had strong running games. Dalton Nielsen worked hard and battled on with a corked thigh. Evan Lack made some good runs despite being troubled by illness; and Neil Ranger played strongly, rushing back from school rugby commitments to play this weekend. The Warriors finished strongly, troubled by numerous injuries, but the 10 minutes after half-time when they conceded 3 tries ultimately cost them the game. Try scorers: Joe Morris (2), Dalton Nielsen and Max Somes.U16: The U16 Carlowrie Park Warriors continue to battle for supremacy this year, going down to the Goondiwindi team this weekend. Despite being without our full-strength team this week the boys put in a great effort against a formidable opponent. Tries were scored by Thomas Henry, Jack Rubie and Brodie Sharman, and two goals kicked by Callum Duncan in their eventual defeat at the hands of the Boars. Tim Sharpe, Brodie Frizzell, Cody Brown and Brodie Sharman topped the tackle count, and Nick Morris and Matt Willett were both putting in a gutsy effort until being injured mid way through the second half of the game. The team proves that they are not without strength in defence and show some classy attack, but some lapses in consistency and concentration ultimately means the difference between winning and coming second. Better luck next week when we take on Millwood.Red Rooster Award: Brodie FrizzellAllora Foodworks Awards: Nicholas Morris and Tim Sharpe.

McMillan’s Warriors trounce DanesWattles “National Farmer’s Warehouse” first grade side received a major confidence boost on Sunday after defeating the fourth placed Pittsworth Danes 32 – 16 at Platz Oval. Coach Glen McMillan considered the result a bigger boost than the side’s previous two recent wins over Highfields & Warwick, given Pittsworth’s position on the TRL ladder, and the fact that the “Danes” belted Wattles 44 – 4 in the first round.Pre match concerns over the loss of representative back-rower Matt McCarthy were put to rest when the Warriors toughed out a very physical first forty minutes to lead 16 – 10 at the break. Player of the match Justin Van Der Poel set the mood when he mustered plenty of strength to charge over in the second minute of play, carrying three defenders with him. Van Der Poel has tasted first grade this year with a few bench runs, but is among Wattles most consistent players, his tough aggressive running style reaping his side many metres. The regular reserve grade fullback played in the centres and on the wing on Sunday, a powerhouse whenever he handled the ball, and a damaging defender. Winger Dale Dempsey & fullback Brenden Wilson scored tries late in the first half, but when halfback Rob Woodbridge scored after a forty metre Wilson gallop, and Van Der Poel finished off a play that saw five team mates handle, the Warriors took a firm grasp on the game leading 26 – 10. With 22 minutes remaining, back-rower Luke Baker embarked on a stepping run from fifteen metres out to score under the posts in a classy individual effort after solid lead up work by Woodbridge and Lee Lousick. The Danes were camped in Wattles half for the final fifteen minutes of play, but the home side defence was lock tight. Front rower Brady Glass was in great form, a difficult package for the defence to handle, and laying on some great off loads. Halfback Woodbridge was another to shine in a strong all round effort, while up and comer Lee Lousick impressed taking on the Pittsworth line.Wattles co-coach Russell McMillan is more than happy with Wattles last four performances, “the side has a very positive

feel about it with three wins from our last four starts”. Wattles 32 (Justin Van Der Poel 2, Brenden Wilson, Dale Dempsey, Robert Woodbridge, Luke Baker tries; Brady Glass 3, Robert Woodbridge goals) defeated Pittsworth 16.

Glyn Rees

“Danes” Edge Out Home SideIn reserve grade Wattles “Railway Hotel, Allora” side finished behind Pittsworth 28 – 36, with Matt Tuiono making a big impression. Josh McIntosh was again outstanding, especially his work around the ruck, while halfback Jordan Henry was also among Wattles best. The “Danes” ran in two tries to lead 10 – 0 after eight minutes, but as halftime approached hooker Josh McIntosh darted away in one of his characteristic dummy half scoots 35 metres up

Forwards Luke Baker & Xavier Manley combine to halt the progress of a Pittsworth "Danes" player in Wattles 32 - 16 first grade victory at Platz Oval on Sunday.

field where he offloaded to Anthony McIntosh who scored. The McIntosh brothers were responsible for all Wattles’ first half points, bustling back-rower Walter McIntosh also crashing over for a first stanza touchdown. Pittsworth veteran Brendan Smith scored a sharp four pointer diving from dummy half to give is his side a 14 – 12 lead at the break. Soon after the restart Josh McIntosh & Matt Tuiono put Wattles in a handy attacking position, before 17 year old fullback Brandon Cubby kicked across field for Anthony McIntosh to leap high and score his second try. The Danes snatched the lead again to go ahead 20 – 18, before capitalising on some defensive lapses to lead 26 – 18. Anthony McIntosh also proved a handy exponent of the cross field kick, Matt Tuiono gathering after a “Danes” fumble to score. Wattles clawed their way to the lead in the 58th minute, after centre Dean Cubby showed gritty determination to force his way over from dummy-half for his side to edge ahead 28 – 26. Pittsworth finished the stronger though with two late tries giving them the match, the “Warriors” reduced to eleven men in the final four minutes after Josh McIntosh & Dean Cubby were dispatched to the sin bin.Congratulations to Michael Duggan who came off the bench to play halfback midway through the second half, his debut senior grade match after excelling in the Under 18 ranks this year. Pittsworth 36 defeated Wattles 28 (Anthony McIntosh 2, Matt Tuiono, Walter McIntosh Jnr, Dean Cubby tries; Anthony McIntosh 4 goals).

Pittsworth Dominate Under 18’sFront-rower Lee Lousick led from the front for the” Allora Foodworks” Warriors in a solid performance as a lead in to his first grade run latter in the day, but alas the Warrior colts were beaten 34 - 6. Halfback Michael Duggan was Wattles best on field, with a strong never say die effort, while outside back Matt Perry was another to stand out in the “green & gold”. Wattles led at halftime 6 – 4 after a Tim Sharpe try that featured a barnstorming Michael Nauschutz run in the lead up. However, a Wattles error from the second half restart hit the Danes “go” button, and they ran in five unanswered tries in the final thirty minutes. The match started with a bad taste for Wattles, losing talented hard working hooker Alex Morris with a knee injury. Fortunately Morris recovered enough to take the field just after half time. Powerful representative front rower Carl Gale was another victim of injury, leaving the field in the 44th minute.Centre Anthony McIntosh hit the 150 season point mark when he converted Wattles first half try. McIntosh finished the day with a season tally of 168 points after two tries and four goals in reserve grade. His points come from 22 tries and 40 goals.Pittsworth 34 defeated Wattles 6 (Tim Sharpe try; Anthony McIntosh goal). The Toowoomba Rugby League has no competition fixtures scheduled for this weekend due to the QRL Open Age Championships at the Gold Coast and also the TRL midyear championships, the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy final & Presidents Cups at Newtown Oval on Sunday. Wattles next outing will be against Newtown at Newtown Oval on Sunday June 19th.
