Your FREE Local “Since 1935” Rotary honours Robyn’s service to community This year’s changeover for the Rotary Club of Allora saw the announcement by outgoing president, Robyn Draper, in her final duty in her president’s year, of Robyn Miles as a Paul Harris Fellow. A Paul Harris Fellow can be presented to any person, either in the club or outside it, for outstanding service to the community. The PHF award has dual benefit. Not only does it give the community an opportunity to recognise somebody worthy of recogni- tion, but it also requires the club to give $US 1000 to the Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s charity, which works across the world on projects benefitting many communities. In announcing Robyn Miles as a Paul Harris Fellow, Robyn Draper noted “It is easy for us to almost take Robyn and the Railway Hotel for granted. It is almost too easy for community groups to gain sponsorship from her, because she is so generous” to which Robyn’s dad, Cec Miles, quipped, to the amusement of all gathered for the occasion, “I wondered where all the profits went.” She further enumerated the long list of substantial sponsorships that Robyn Miles and the Railway Hotel had made annually or has supported in just the last few years, which included Rotary Annual Trivia Night, Allora Cricket Club and the Rascal’s Cricket Team, as well as the Allora XI, Allora Show Girls, Allora Cup race day, Allora Golf Monthly Mug, Teams for Night Bowls and Raffle prizes for Night Bowls, Rotary 50th celebrations, Wattles season, Match Day and trophies, St Patrick’s Rattle of the Brains, Allora Sheepdog Trials, Biggest Morning tea, Great Endeavour Rally & Cruise, Dry July Cancer Fundraiser, Allora & District Historical Society Open Day Raffle, Allora State School P&C Spring Fair, Allora Autumn Festival, Allora State School Musical, Camp Draft prizes, Allora Regional Sports Museum Hall of Fame and the Allora Show Smash-up Derby. Marshall, Robyn Draper thanked the club and the community for their support for Rotary activities during the year, among them the once again very successful Trivia Night, a Morning Tea Cancer Council fundraiser and the annual book sale. She also indicated that Rotary had sponsored a record number of youth programs, with Ella Gartery able to attend RYTS and, again, three of the Allora State School leaders able to attend RYPEN.In taking up the mantle of office, Liz Marshall announced the theme of the 2018-19 year of her presidency as “Be The Inspiration” and a new mission statement of “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Liz articulated how she was inspired by the example of those in Rotary like Bill Lester (charter member) and John Gordon, who between them have given 100 years of service to the community through Rotary, and how she hoped to emulate their achievements. She also announced her new executive of Shann O’Connell

as secretary and Andrew Westerman continuing as treasurer. Other positions are unchanged but Liz commented that “we all work in all positions”, which makes no duty too onerous. She thanked Robyn Draper for her work over her year and endorsed the awarding of the Paul Harris Fellow to Robyn

Miles.Once again, the event was well attended, with represent-ation from Boonah, Warwick

and Warwick Sunrise Clubs, and a sumptuous meal was accompanied by great fellow-ship.

St Patrick’s School Opens Its Doors For Catholic Education Week

Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queens-land from 29 July – 4 August this year. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is Discovering New Horizons. You may have seen the fence banner out the front of the school.Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contribut-ing, life-giving members of

society. There are 304 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 147,000 students and employ more than 19,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.St Patrick’s school is planning a number of activities during the week and we hope you are able to join in the celebrations with us. On Monday the school’s senior choir will be treating the residents of the ‘Homestead’ with a performance. Tuesday will begin with a celebration in church for Catholic Education Week, followed by an ‘Open Day’ at 11.30am. 2019 enrolments or other children of families wishing to come and have a try, are welcome to come and be a part of our classes for this day. Please contact the office if you are interested in attending our ‘Open Day’.

General Practice – Changing For The Better: AMA Family Doctor Week, 22- 28 July 2018General practice – the cornerstone of Australia’s healthcare system – is undergoing remarkable change to better meet patient needs, AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today.Marking AMA Family Doctor Week 2018, Dr Bartone said that technological advances and changing business practices are combining to improve the service to patients.“Every day in Australia, there are about 406,000 visits to family doctors and, on average, Australians see a family doctor about six times a year,” Dr Bartone said.“Most patients have a preferred family doctor, and about 93 per cent of Australians always go to the same general practice. As people get older, they are

more likely to keep seeing the same doctor.“Many general practices have become larger and more diverse in the services that they offer to patients.“More than ever, family doctors are working with other health professionals to care for patients, and many practices employ a range of allied health professionals, including practice nurses, pharmacists, diabetes educators, Aboriginal health workers, and psychologists.“Many general practices now have co-located pathology collection centres, and point-of-care testing services are increasingly available in the practice to provide timely test results for your GP.“General practice is now highly computerised. This means that if your own family

doctor is unavailable, another doctor in the practice can look after you, with immediate access to your clinical records.“Many practices also offer point-of-care Medicare claiming, online appointment making, and recall and follow-up systems to ensure that patients do not fall through the cracks.“You can also talk to your GP about creating an electronic My Health Record, to ensure that those in your health care

team can make informed treatment decisions.“But one thing that will never change is the trusted relationship between a family doctor and their patient, and the personal touch that is so important.”Family Doctor Week recognises and celebrates the important role that family GPs play in the lives of their patients. It runs from 22-28 July 2018.

Shire Boundary OptionsAllora Shire Chairman, Cr. Jim Deacon, feels that the Allora Shire has been left “high and dry” by other local councils in EARC deliberations on proposed shire boundary changes. The decision by the Glengallan Shire Council to opt to go it alone meant that Option 2, the disbandment of the Rosenthal Shire and the land to be divided amongst Warwick City, and Glengallan and Allora Shires, was less likely. Cr. Deacon felt that Option 3, the enlargement of Warwick City and the formation of a large rural shire, had a lot of problems associated with it. “Allora and Rosenthal are both strong financially” he said. “To combine the shires would mean ratepayers would have to carry the burden of Glengallan Shire’s $2 million debt.”Allora’s Past 75 years ago July 1943

Strange CasesMr. J. J. Shelby, the veterinary officer at the Warwick Stock Office, has encountered some strange cases in the line of his work

with the Department. He was recently called to attend a sick cow at Allora and gave it a cleansing drench. Several days later it was given a small feed. After being turned out into a paddock it dropped dead. Following a post-mortem examination Mr. Shelby removed the heart, sliced it and in the left ventricle found a solid concrete mass resembling a well worn cricket ball formed from fibrous heart tissues. What caused the condition was not known, and medical and veterinary men advised of the incident, expressed wonder that the animal had been able to stand up in such a condition.

A Smart CaptureA smart piece of work, resulting in the capture of a man in the shop of Chard Brothers, butchers, was carried out by the local police at a late hour on Wednesday night last. Constable Zahn was on duty when he heard a noise from the shop of Chard Bros. The constable entered the premises in company with Sergeant Spink and made a search of the shop with lighted matches. Their efforts were rewarded when they found a man in a

crouching position under the counter. The defendant, who gave his name as Archer Noble, appeared before Messrs. P. J. Higgins and H. G. Deacon J.J.P. on Thursday afternoon on a charge of having broken into the premises of Chard Bros., and stolen 5/11½ from the cash register. Sergeant Spink prosecuted. The defendant, who pleaded guilty, was committed for sentence to the Criminal sittings of the Circuit Court to be held in Brisbane on the 29th inst.Allora’s Past 125 years ago July 1893

After some legal argument the case was dismissed, the complainant being ordered to pay the defendant £4 10s costs..

ABC Heywire 2019 Competition launchedThe ABC is calling on people aged 16-22 to share their experiences of life in regional Australia for the opportunity to be featured on the ABC and win a lifechanging trip to Canberra for the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in February 2019.Anyone with a story to tell about life in their part of the country is encouraged to enter, with entries of any medium accepted, including text, video, audio and photo. The competition officially opens on 18 July, 2018.The 40 winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit and will take part in workshops to help them

realise their potential and give them a kickstart to help make life in regional Australia even better.Past winners have used Heywire as a springboard to make positive change in the areas of agriculture, mental health, youth employment and drug education, just to name a few.Director of ABC Regional and Local, Michael Mason, said the Heywire competition has been the start of big things for many entrants.“For the past 20 years, Heywire has amplified the voices and ideas of young regional Australians. We are so proud to share their stories and help them unlock their

potential.”Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud says Heywire proves that living outside of Australia’s urban centres can open doors.“Heywire is helping bright young people turn their ideas into reality,” Mr Littleproud said.“Currently 400 regional communities are befitting from their innovation and I congratulate the over 11,000 youth who have submitted their stories.”Director of anti-racism program E-Raced and 2013 Heywire winner, Prudence Melom, says that Heywire allowed her to channel her passion into something that is making a real difference.“Heywire...gave me the help I needed to channel my energy into a project that is helping

thousands of young people around the country to embrace multiculturalism. Now five years later my project is well established, I’m Toowoomba’s Young Citizen of the year, living out my dreams and motivating other young people in regional and rural Australia to do the same. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Heywire.”Get your entries in via the Heywire website www.abc.net.au/heywire by 16 September 2018.Heywire acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources; the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities; the Department of Social Services; the Department of Health; and AgriFutures Australia.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

The Doctor received a frantic phone call from Mr. Jones who explained that his wife, who

always slept with her mouth open, had a mouse caught in her throat.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be over in a few minutes,” said the doctor. “In the meantime, try waving a piece

of cheese in front of her mouth.”

When the doctor arrived, he found Mr Jones waving a large fish in front of his wife’s face.

“What on earth are you doing?” exclaimed the doctor.

“I told you to wave cheese. Mice don’t like fish.”

“I know,” Mr Jones gasped, “but I need to get the cat out first.

The boys worked well as a team with backing up and offloads. Douglas, Zavier, Kaleb, Eddison and James made great metres through the middle. Tries went to Jonte 3, Archer 1, Bailey 3 and Jack 2. Thanks to the boys who helped the Gremlins field a side.Dalrymple Landscaping and Haulage Under 9s - It was a good game with great defence from Wattles. Super effort Wattles.Clifton  Auto  Ag  Repairs U11s had a great game of footy. Corey was running strong which saw him score 2 tries. Wattles win 38 to 22.Ruhle  Developments  U17s Girls  Leaguetag - Captain this week was Lacey. In the 1st minute Jo breaks through to score a try, converted by Sophie. Great defense and catch by Lacey. Ebony scores in the 5th minute with Lauren kicking the conversion. Stanthorpe scores a try and after half time Sophie scores a great try under the posts and kicks the conversion. Charlotte scores in the corner, followed by a three quarter length of the field run by Sophie who converts her try. Stanthorpe cross the line again and in the last couple of minutes Ebony scores with

Lauren kicking the conversion. Great game ladies. Wattles win 34-10.U16 Hamblin Builders - This game was a carbon copy of the last time both teams played, however the result was flipped upside down with the Gremlins winning 44-14. It was a true game of different halves for us, Coach Brady thought the boys were easily the better team in the first 10 minutes of the game however poor decisions and executions of plays let us down at crucial times. We went into the break down 34-0. The half time message was play together as a team and not to rely on 1 or 2 players to do all the work. The second half was pleasing, our defensive line and enthusiasm was a lot better and our attack was on song. Tries were scored by Clayton, Jake and Harry. Our best on ground was once again Darby who was really in everything. Rylan was also good.
