Nov/Dec 2017 (Heshvan/Kislev/Tevet 5778)
The newsletter is produced
bi-monthly (6 issues per year)
Editor: Elyse Spialter
WHAT’S NEW? While not “new” per se, this issue is different in that it is 10 pages long (rather than the usual 8 pages) to allow for the CBZ tradition of announcing the pledges made during the High Holiday appeal. This year, however, the appeal was impacted by Irma and that has influenced many aspects of this issue. In addition to reviewing pages 4 & 5, which provide well deserved recognition of the various pledges/donations made and help provided by so many during the Fall holiday season, please see the President’s Message on page 2 for a fuller description of CBZ’s financial needs at this time. This issue includes a lot of shifting of items from their “normal” spots, so be sure to check out every page. Note specifically the full listing for M3M on page 6 — as part of the insert, it is easy to keep this for future reference. As always, I do thank my dedicated proof-readers, SHELDON DAVIDSON & HOWARD SPIALTER. I close by sharing that I am so thrilled, considering the devastation that threatened Key West so closely, to be able to get this issue out and, hopefully, enhance the re-connection of the B’nai Zion community.

Judaism — Part Six
The Kingdom Of Solomon:
The crowning of Solomon ushered in a period of
approximately 40 years of peace. This was a
time in Jewish history when the dream of the
"Promised Land" reached its potential and
became a reality. Under Solomon’s rule, a truly
united nation existed that enjoyed prosperity
and calm. The writings of King Solomon are
among the greatest contributions to the Bible
and include Proverbs, Song of Songs and
Ecclesiastes.
All who appreciated wisdom and political
capabilities admired Solomon. His fame spread
far and wide. The Talmud says that 400
Greek philosophers came to consult with him.
Bearing gifts, the famous Queen of Sheba came
all the way from Ethiopia to meet with him. By
marrying practically every princess of every
kingdom bordering his land, Solomon used the
tried and true method of his era that prevented
war and increased trade with his neighbors.
This was the first and last time Israel enjoyed
such a long period of peace.
A well-known story depicting Solomon’s insight
tells of the case of two women with two babies,
one child alive and the other dead.
Both women claimed the live baby and rejected

the dead one; they came before him for judgment. The King's seemingly
divine wisdom allowed him to discover who the live baby's true mother was
and he returned the child to her. This catapulted the young ruler to a level
of popularity even higher than his father, King David, had known.
His greatest achievement was the building of the First Holy Temple in
Jerusalem. The Temple building project, however, meant a very heavy toll
on the people. Extensive manpower was utilized and included forms of
servitude, and unbearable taxes were levied. The resulting dissatisfaction
led, immediately following King Solomon's death, to the end of the era of a
united kingdom.
Known in Hebrew as the Beit Hamikdash, the Temple was a magnificent feat
of construction that took seven years to complete. With great
joy and two weeks of celebration and prayers, the glorious sanctuary was
dedicated on the Festival of Sukkot. Biblical and Rabbinic sources place
this event in the year 826 BCE; secular sources, however, date the origins of
the First Temple to the 10th century BCE.
In his inauguration prayer and his blessing of the people, Solomon
highlighted the special character of this House of Worship, where Jew
and gentile were equally welcome to pray to the G-d of Israel. Solomon’s
words included his pleading with G-d to hear the prayers of those who
worshipped Him and grant their requests.
With Torah blessings,
Rabbi Dudai

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (FROM DR. FRED COVAN):
Wow! We were lucky, at least those of us who live in Key West. I have friends and relatives on Big Pine and it's a disas-ter area; there are many people who are still without power and who will be homeless for months. Rabbi and Nadia stayed in the building and did a heroic job of securing it from flood and wind damage. Nevertheless, we did incur damage. Nadia's garden was destroyed, the beautiful wooden doors in the courtyard were sandblasted by the winds and need to be refinished, there are
several leaks into the building which need to be assessed by a contractor, the generator we had failed, and the outside of the building looks a bit tattered. So we’re going to have to spend the money to make repairs. In addition, since many people were absent for the High Holiday Appeal, we raised half of what we usually do. During the appeal I was going to ask for an additional contribution from people to pay for the new floor we just installed in the social hall. I don't know if you are aware, but your dues only cover about half of our operating expenses. Without generous contributions during the High Holiday Appeal we are seriously in the red. So, we need your financial help. We always need your financial help, but we especially need it now. We have a wonderful schedule planned for the season including speakers for the "Feed your Mind, Feed your Soul” (and “Feed Your Stomach”) lecture series, the M3M movie series has a wonderful listing of films to be shown and our religious school is going to be continuing with new volunteer help. So please, support us financially and support us by attending, but, also support yourself by bringing your Jewish heritage into your life, perhaps even more fully than you have in the past.
Shalom, Fred

Plans are being made for CBZ’s Israel trip 2018! Following the success of this year’s trip, many members have asked
Rabbi Dudai to organize a congregation trip to Israel in 2018. We are aiming for a two week trip starting November 11, 2018.
A number of options are being considered that include, in addition to Israel, another country with a rich Jewish history such as Spain or
Morocco. Options will be available for starting earlier or staying longer, as well as combining the CBZ trip with a visit to a European city of your
choice. An initial draft itinerary can be sent to you for your input.
Next year is a big events year in Israel, so book early! Please contact Rabbi Dudai ASAP
(305-294-3414 or [email protected]). .

HIGH HOLIDAYS 2017 — POST-IRMA
The Jewish holidays this Fall in Key West were, of course, affected by the hurricane. CBZ expresses its
gratitude that our shul and most of our congregants were spared extensive loss. Our synagogue family
sends out its hopes and prayers to all, extending wishes that those touched by the storm are making
their way back to normality. If anyone connected with the B’nai Zion community is still in need of assis-
tance, let the Congregation know and every effort will be made to help. As you (the friends & members
of CBZ ) consider the on-going needs extending throughout the Keys, please keep in mind that it was not
possible to conduct a typical High Holiday Appeal this year. There was no request for pledges made on
Rosh Hashanah and the number of those present for Yom Kippur was far smaller than typical. If you
have not yet done so, you are urged to make a donation commitment at this time to Congregation B’nai
Zion in recognition of the new year of 5778. Please do your part to solidify the financial health of CBZ!
——————————————————————————————————————
See p. 5 for the listing of pledges made on Yom Kippur. In addition, listed below are those who have provided MAIL-IN HIGH HOLIDAY DONATIONS received & posted by October 10th.
With thanks, B’nai Zion acknowledges the contributions sent in by the following: JUDY & JEFF COHEN, ROBERT SHER, ROBERTA & GERALD GINSBERG, EUNICE & ANDREW MELNICK,
DONNA FELDMAN, BENJAMIN BERNSTEIN TRUST AND CAROL & LARRY ABRAMOVITZ
——————————————————————————————————————
Please note that every effort was made to carefully list the various pledges/donations that were made. E-mail to [email protected] if any error or omission is noted, so that a correction can be included in the next issue of the newsletter.

M 3 M (Movies on the 3rd Monday)
2017-2018 Schedule
The films, which are free and open to the public, will be screened at Congregation B'nai Zion, 750 United Street at 7:30 pm on the following dates:
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2017 – “THE FREEDOM TO MARRY”, Sponsor Jeffrey Grosky THE FREEDOM TO MARRY is an intimate and epic documentary which goes behind-the-scenes to reveal the inner workings and key players of this historic civil rights struggle. This is a riveting ride alongside Evan Wolfson, the man
known as architect of the movement, civil rights attorney Mary Bonauto, and their key colleagues as they wage their climactic battle before the U.S. Supreme Court, providing fresh perspective on the movement's history along the way.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2017 – “ROSENWALD”, Sponsors Abby Moore, Sue & Stuart Kaufman Julius Rosenwald never completed high school, but he became a wealthy man by building Sears into a mail-order Goliath and acquiring company stock. Embracing the Jewish doctrine of "tikkun olam," or repairing the world, the philanthropist wasn't content to sit on his fortune. In the early decades of the 20th century, Rosenwald used his money to educate black children in the segregated South, build YMCAs that welcomed black residents and award fellowships
to a "who's who" of black artists and scholars, including W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Marion Anderson and James Baldwin. Working with Booker T. Washington and local communities, he helped create more than 5,300 schools in the rural South by providing seed grants. Rosenwald's work to school black children out of poverty is the focus of "Rosenwald," a new feature-length documentary from director Aviva Kempner.
MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2018 – “PLASTIC MAN: THE ARTFUL LIFE OF JERRY ROSS BARRISH”, Sponsors Justin & Eileen Kawaler, Sheldon Davidson Jerry Barrish was the product of an environment that little appreciated the finer arts, much less the wildness of modern art. His hardworking, San Francisco Jewish relatives were boxing enthusiasts vaguely connected to the mob. It was these connections that got him started in the bail bonds business. Then he broke the mold, becoming the bailout guy for radical sixties protesters. Inspired by the times, he went further afield, delving into art collecting, and then launching
himself as a filmmaker and sculptor. Plastic Man is the dramatic tale of Barrish finding himself at a seeming artistic standstill about 25 years ago, living next to a trash-strewn beach in Pacifica, California. Creative by necessity, he begins collecting the detritus - especially the plastic - and assembling it into whimsical, evocative, poignant human and animal figures. By the end of Plastic Man, the artist is commissioned to create a 15-foot horn player constructed from the forms
of a disassembled gun for a troubled, low-income neighborhood where he works.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2018 – “REMEMBER”, Sponsors Mark & Nancy Funt Remember is a 2015 Canadian-German drama thriller film directed by Atom Egoyan and written by Benjamin August.
The film stars Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau and tells the story of an elderly Holocaust survivor with dementia who sets out to kill a Nazi war criminal. The film was theatrically released in Canada and Germany in 2015 and the United States in 2016.
MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2018 – “BERNSTEIN: LARGER THAN LIFE”, Kenny Weschler Always a determinedly colorful character, obviously attracted by the limelight, Leonard Bernstein had a talent for wowing young fans with his flamboyant style and flair for pedagogy. His creative gifts knew few bounds, as he moved easily between podium, piano and television screen. Indeed, no other musician had ever captivated such a broad spectrum of
the American public as Bernstein did. His appearances as a conductor had an incredible emotional impact, often bringing about an excitement approaching frenzy. Bernstein became one of the first world-famous American-born conductors, he was also one of the first world-famous American composers. His best-known works included the
musicals On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide and West Side Story, written in collaboration with Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins. Some of his more personally thought-provoking music included religious-themed works like the Mass or the Chicester Psalms, in which we see him struggling with his Jewish heritage and universal questions of faith.
MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2018 – “ON THE MAP”, Sponsors Barbara & Creighton Webb In 1977, the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team prevailed over CSKA Moscow (known in the West as Red Army), a team that refused to play against Israel. Moments after this highly charged and historical win, Israeli-American basketball
hero Tal Brody captured the heart of the nation when he famously said, "Israel is on the map, not just in sport, but in everything." The story of this triumph against all odds is told through the eyes of six American basketball players who joined Maccabi Tel Aviv. 6

Prayer on Kindling a Yahrzeit Candle:
Eternal Rock of Ages — In hushed reverence, I kindle this memorial candle in loving remembrance of my beloved (Mother, Father, Son, Daughter) on this anniversary of his/her/their death(s). We have been taught that human souls are Thy candles. through them Thou bringest light into the world. For the light of compassion and tenderness which my loved one(s) brought into my life, I am everlastingly grateful. Help me O G-d to use the sacred memory of my loved one(s) as a noble spur to consecrated living. May I perpetuate and transmit everything that was beautiful and lovely in his/her/their character. Keep firm my faith that we cannot go where You are not and where You are all is well. Amen. (As the light is kindled say: Zecher tsaddik leevrachah”. The memory of the upright is a source of blessing.)

JEWISH FOOD FAVORITES FOR SALE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Editor’s Note: This 2017-18 newsletter series will explore foods that are considered “Jewish” from an ethnic perspective and that have become readily available for purchase (at least on the East Coast.)
Chocolate Hanukkah Gelt derives from the custom in Ashkenazi shtetls of giving “gelt” (the Yiddish word for “money”) in connection with the holiday of Hanukkah. The tradition began, however, with the gelt being given to adults, not children. Sources vary, but the money bestowed was known to be given to those in need and also as a holiday “tip”. Teachers who travelled from the city to share lessons in various villages were, in addition to being paid with room & board and provisions, provided with a monetary present in conjunction with the holiday. It was the children who typically carried the coins to their teachers and, over time, the practice of also giving the children a gift of gelt caught on. Those who transitioned to life in America then brought the act of giving coins to youngsters for Hanukkah here.
Creation of the foil-covered chocolate coins that are now a Hanukkah staple was a marketing triumph for the Loft candy company in the 1920s. American Jews were clearly impacted by the massive appeal of Christmas and had begun making the minor holiday of Hanukkah into a big deal. Chocolate was already part of the seasonal flurry and the idea of including it in Jewish festivities quickly became popular. Along the way, it became standard to emboss the foil covering the coins with the menorah illustration. The Hasmoneans minted coins in celebration of the victory that Hanukkah now marks and included were those with the image of a 7-branched hanukkiah. In 1958, Israel had commemorative coins issued with the same menorah pictorial as on those ancient Judean coins. Today, chocolate coins used as Hanukkah gelt have a wide range of images on them, including Hanukkah symbols, American currency depictions and designs of all kinds.
Much of the chocolate gelt sold in the U.S. now is standardized, in that the gold foil is milk chocolate and the silver foil is dark chocolate (which is often parve). While most of us consider the waxy chocolate that snaps as much a part of the Hanukkah celebration as latkes and/or jelly doughnuts, there have been recent trends toward the production of upscale varieties. If you check the web, you can find all types of gourmet chocolate gelt. Although some folks do make their own, chocolate gelt is an item generally purchased. As is common with so much of what is bought in modern times, how the chocolate is made and who makes it has taken on tones of controversy. There are countries with significant chocolate manufacturing operations that utilized forced or under-age labor and, it is felt that purchasing this candy opposes Jewish values. This reason, in addition to others, makes the purchase of Hanukkah gelt made in Israel appealing to many.
Whatever type of chocolate Hanukkah gelt you give or receive, everyone can agree that using it to bet on a rousing game of dreidel to mark the holiday is a wonderful experience for all!
