FIRE CHIEF MANLY OFFERS PERIODIC ADVICE

Brinnon Fire Department EMT’s are called to help an in-creasing number of people who have fallen. The falls are not just related to illness or fainting, but to things that can be controlled. For example, take a look at the bot-tom of your slippers or your shoes. If the soles are slick and shiny, that could be the reason you fell down.

Check the rubber backing on any rug. After multiple washings, the backing gradually breaks down presenting another potential cause for a trip-and-fall moment.

Make sure you have night lights between your bedroom and bathroom and that all commonly used pathways in your home are clear.

(Chief Manly will be mak-ing suggestions periodi-cally in the Crier)

PREPARE FOR A DISASTER

1. Fill a fireproof box. Items should in-clude identification and other important cards, financial records, family photos

and emergency cash in small bills.

2. Design a disaster plan. It should in-clude who to contact and where to meet

family members in case of an emergency. All family members should know the plan

and the numbers to call.

3. Make a list. Include emergency phone numbers, the local fire department, and

poison control.

4. Create a go-kit. Pack a sturdy, easy-to-carry container, such as a backpack or

suitcase on wheels. Keep it near the door. Go to ready.gov/kit for items to include.

5. Turn off. Know how to shut off valves for gas, oil, water and main electricity sup-

ply. Put tags on these valves so you can find them, but have a professional turn

them back on.

6. Have 3 days of food and water handy.
