In the book of Habakkuk, we read from a prophet who preached during the height of the exile of the

Jewish people. The Babylonians had defeated them, and carried

their leaders and many of their citi-zens into exile. It was a difficult time for the Israelites, to put it mildly. In Habakkuk

2 we read: I will stand at my watch-post, and sta-tion myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will

say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a

vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not

delay. Habakkuk is standing at the watch post, believing that he will

hear from the Lord. He is told to write God’s vision in such big letters that a person running by will be able to read it. Finally, he

is told that if the fulfillment of the vision seems to tarry, wait pa-tiently and faithfully.

Wesley Church is a typical United Methodist Church in this sense: the UMC has been steadily declining in membership since

the 1960s. But we continue to stand at the watch post, and be-lieve that we will hear from the Lord. We trust that God has a vi-

sion for our church, and a future with hope, as the prophet Jere-miah says.

Spiritual Formation: I hope that in this Lenten season, you are opening yourself up to grace in fresh ways. Check out the “spiritual practices” resource available in the brochure racks. Come to a small group, if you are not already in one. This is the most important avenue for spiritual formation.

Schedule a time for personal retreat, for a day, a few days, or even a few hours. I am here to help you plan and prepare. In the coming months, look for retreat days which will be offered locally on a

Saturday, that I will lead.

Reaching Younger People: We continue to strive and struggle in this area. Chris Countryman’s job has expanded to include young adults. In addition to working with the youth and children, he is

working to establish ties with the college campuses, and start a young adult study. But this is not Chris’ job alone. It is our task as a community of faith. How might you be a part of what God is do-ing?

Missional Outreach: We continue to expand in this area. March 17 at 5p.m. is the first mission trip meeting for the trip to New York July 14-20. You are invited! The week of July 7 will be the week of Restoration, when our youth will spend the week sleeping at church and serving in the community.

Lots of opportunities to support this week are available. Also, we are part of a group of 11 churches supporting an “Apostles Build” for Habitat for Humanity. If you were in worship Sunday, you heard

about this effort. Our work day is May 18 in Frederica. If you are 16 or older, you are invited to come paint on this day.

We are blessed to be able to report that our worship attendance and small group participation are

moving in the right direction. Comparing 2012 to 2013 for first 7 weeks, we see this: First 7 weeks of 2012 = 1751 First 7 weeks of 2013 = 1863 or + 6% increase.

If we review attendance as the 52 week average (as the Lewis Center for Church Leadership recom-mends), the first 7 weeks of 2013 are now larger by about 6 people than the prior year (2012); a

slight overall increase. In small groups, we have a weekly average participation of around 90 people in small groups, including adult Sunday School and mid-week studies (but not counting UMW and UMM!)

There is much more that could be said, but space does not permit. So please mark your calendar for Sunday April 21 at 5p.m. Bring a dish to share and join together for a pot luck supper and a town hall meeting. Learn about what God is doing among us, and how you might

participate. Come with your questions and ideas. Part of this time will also be devoted to conversation about the worship schedule and the decision we will make at council in May.

I am honored to be your pastor. It is truly a privilege to serve God’s people in this place. God has

blessed us with wonderful leaders, and so many faithful followers of Jesus here at Wesley. Will you join with me in standing at the watch-post? “I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on

the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me”.

Labyrinth Walk

Friday, March 22, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, 9a.m. - 4p.m. A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the

imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer

tools.


A word from Bishop Peggy Johnson

The epidemic of gun-related violence that has swept the nation has come home to us. As you know,

yesterday, February 11, a lone gunman shot and killed two women, one his former daughter-in-law, in the lobby of the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington. He also shot and wounded two law enforcement officers. The latest reports say that the gunman then shot himself. It is only by the

grace of our Lord that there were not more persons killed or wounded.

It is painfully obvious that we must stop this escalating trend of gun-related violence that has taken the lives of so many people, including young children. The General Board of Church and Society of

The United Methodist Church recently announced our support for A Comprehensive Plan That Reduc-es Gun Violence and Respects the 2nd Amendment Rights of Law-Abiding Americans. This document

was produced by the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force of the United States House of Representa-tives. The key principles are (1) mandating universal background checks on every gun purchased, including those bought at gun shows or in private sales, (2) banning high-capacity magazines, and

(3) implementing a rigorous ban on assault weapons.

On February 5, faith groups from across the United States mobilized over 7,000 calls to Congress, demonstrating the concern for reducing gun violence from persons of almost every religious tradi-

tion. Most of these groups, including The United Methodist Church, belong to Faiths United to Pre-vent Gun Violence. The participating groups are united by their own traditions that support human

safety and wellness over violence.

In Delaware, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General have proposed reforms that would address the principles of the House Task Force. They are being supported by the new Dela-

ware Coalition Against Gun Violence, which includes representatives of the faith communities. If you are interested in learning more about this group, please call Pastor Bob Hall at the Delaware Ecu-menical Council on Children and Families at 302-225-1040.

Please be in prayer for our nation as we struggle with this issue and look for ways to end the violence that is ever increasing.

Bishop Peggy A. Johnson

Bishop Peggy A. Johnson announces the appointment of Rev. Dr. Vicki Gordy-Stith as District Superintendent of the Dover District

effective July 1, 2013. Born in Salisbury, Maryland and raised in Dover and Wilmington,

Delaware, and Salisbury, Maryland, Vicki grew up in a pastoral family as the middle of three children. Vicki’s older brother, Howie,

had a developmental disability, which cultivated both a sense of empathy and a sense of being an outsider for Vicki and her young-er sister. She graduated from Wicomico High School in Salisbury,

Maryland in 1982 and attended the US Naval Academy, where she graduated and was commissioned in the US Navy in 1986. She

married her husband, Bo, two days after graduation and they re-ported to two different ships home ported in San Diego, California. Continued on page 5

Vicki served as Communications Officer and Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer onboard, and qualified as

Surface Warfare Officer and Engineering Officer of the Watch. After sea duty, Vicki and Bo transferred to Newport, Rhode Island for shore duty. Vicki taught Leadership and Engineering and served as the

Adjutant of the officer candidates. She received the Master Training Specialist award and the Navy Commendation medal while in Newport.

Throughout her time in the Navy, Vicki served in various lay ministries, leading a youth group while a

midshipman at the Naval Academy, serving as lay leader onboard the ship, and serving as youth and young adult leader in California and Rhode Island. Although she had experienced a call to ministry in high school, she initially dismissed it as “following in her father’s footsteps.” But, God called her again

just as she began her active duty service and used those five years of service to prepare her for min-istry.

After she resigned her commission in the Navy, she and Bo attended The Divinity School at Duke Uni-

versity, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1994. She was ordained a Deacon in 1993 and began serving the Whaleyville-New Hope Charge on the Salisbury District immediately following grad-

uation. She was ordained to Order of Elder in 1996. She served Whaleyville-New Hope for three years before being appointed to Skyline UMC, in Wilmington, Delaware in 1997 as co-pastor with her hus-band, Bo, and then in 2011 as senior pastor. She earned her Doctorate of Ministry (with Distinction)

from Drew Theological School in 2010, with a focus on leadership in the post-modern context.

Vicki and Bo have three children--Joy, who was born in 1994; Eli, who was born in 1997; and in 2011 they adopted their foster son, Elijah, who was also born in 1997. Joy currently attends Arcadia Uni-

versity as a freshman, double majoring in psychology and sociology. Eli attends Cab Calloway School of the Arts as a sophomore in high school, majoring in vocal music. Elijah attends Dickinson High

School as a freshman and plays basketball and runs track. Vicki enjoys running, singing, and reading as well as camping with her family.

About Lent Madness Lent Madness began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim

Schenck. In seeking a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women comprising the Church’s Calendar of Saints, Tim

came up with this unique Lenten devotion. Combining his love of sports with his passion for the lives of the saints, Lent Madness was

born on his blog “Clergy Family Confidential.”

The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-

like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set pe-

riod of time and people vote for their favorite saint. 16 saints make it

to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the

Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Champion-

ship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. The first round consists of basic biograph-

ical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent

rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch.

The major change from 2010 to 2011 was the introduction of four “celebrity bloggers” to champion

particular saints through the Final Four. Meredith Gould, Scott Gunn, Penny Nash, and Neil Alan

Willard dove into the spirit of Lent Madness with abandon, adding even more intrigue to the proceed-

ings.

In 2012 we partnered with Forward Movement and Executive Director Scott Gunn to create our own

website and broaden the number of people involved in the selection and writing process. And it

worked! 50,000 people visited the Lent Madness last year and it really took off with articles about it

in such august publications as the Washington Post and Sports Illustrated (seriously).

As Lent Madness continues to grow and evolve, what won’t change is the essence of Lent Madness:

allowing people to get to know some amazing people who have come before us in the faith, and re-

minding one another that there’s no reason for a dreary Lenten discipline. If this helps people connect

with the risen Christ during this season of penitence and renewal, and have a bit of fun in the pro-

cess, then it continues to be worthwhile.

We hope you’ll participate fully this Lent and vote with reckless abandon! (Once — this isn’t Chicago).

College Basketball game and encouraged them to win.

brushes, Toothpaste Tubes, Floss Boxes, and Cheese

Wrappers!

Why? Because Wesley Church is

getting ready to Terracycle. This is an alternative national recycling pro-

gram that collects items that cannot be recycled. They are then upcycled into new products. This comes out of the Tuesday afternoon Covenant Dis-

cipleship Group. One of our clauses is about caring for God’s creation. There is also a monetary incen-

tive for participating in the program. Thanks to Shannon Spittle for sharing this with us.

We will collect all things related to dental

care of all brands. This includes old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, empty dental floss con-

tainers, and empty toothbrush boxes (except the cardboard part).

We will also collect all manner of cheese wrappers. This includes the outer packaging of shredded, block, slice, and string cheese. It also

includes the individual wrappers for slice and string cheese. Look for a collection bin soon to be

assembled and put in the main hallway. Terracycle’s purpose is to eliminate the idea

of waste and to turn trash into something we can

use. Terracycle has diverted billions of pieces of trash from being put into landfills and from going

through incinerators. The great thing about terracycle is that you

are not only helping the environment, but you are

also raising money for the church when you turn in Terracycle items. They also offer free shipping

for everything we collect. The waste we collect is either recycled or upcycled into over 1,500 various products like book bags, pencil cases, place mats,

etc. These products are available at mass retailers like Walmart, Target, and Whole Foods Market.

Recycling has gained a lot of attention over the recent years and many of us are involved, but what Terracycle does is called upcycling. Upcycling

is defined as using every aspect of waste as value. When you recycle, products are melted down with

incinerators (which create carbon dioxide) and made again. When you upcycle, every part of that product is used to create new products.

For example, when you upcycle a chip bag every piece of that bag is used to make a lunch

box. You are taking trash and turning it into something useful.

bus trip to Sight and Sound Theatre. This time we will be seeing the show, “Noah”. We will be

departing from the church parking lot at 11:00 a.m., have lunch at the Hershey Farm Restaurant around 1:15 p.m., see the show and arrive back

in Dover at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Fifty tickets have been reserved and the cost will be the same as last year, $108.00 per person. This includes transportation by Dawson

Tours, lunch buffet and admission to the show.

A deposit of $54.00 per person is required by May 1st and the balance is due by August 1st. If you are interested or have questions, please

3. Each camper will deduct the amount of the scholarship from the balance due on his or

Angels Among Us

Marian McKiernan stands in her 1890-era home in Middleburgh, N.Y., gazing at photos taken on Aug. 29, 2011 — the day after Hurricane Irene sent muddy river water swirling through the town. As win-dows broke under the weight of water, mud and debris cascaded into her home.

Since then, thanks to volunteers, McKiernan has been repairing her house and regaining a sense of normalcy. She arranges photos on stacks of new drywall that soon will go up. “I’m starting to feel like

myself again,” she said. McKiernan is just one of many flood survivors who express gratitude for United Methodist Volunteers in Mission and others.

“These volunteers not only fix houses,” said Jack Hill, project manager for the Upper New York Annual Conference. “They also fix people’s lives just by showing up to help.”

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has supported the conference as it aids flood survivors, first with more than 2,000 cleaning buckets, then with grants totaling $120,000. One Great Hour of Sharing calls United Methodists to share the goodness of life with those who

hurt. The offering provides administrative support for the United Methodist Committee on Relief as it responds to disaster survivors and people in need around the world.

United Methodists relate to One Great Hour of Sharing by supporting UMCOR’s ongoing work, re-sponding in times of disaster and telling the story of UMCOR’s ministry.

Missions in Motion By: Wesley Missions Committee

In the January Crier we shared with you our commitment to partner with Habitat for Humanity-

Central Delaware in 2013. This commitment is not ours alone. We have joined a faith community known as an Apostles Build of 10 other churches in the area: Freedom Baptist Church, Felton Viola UMC, Calvary Assembly of God, Grace Presbyterian, Wyoming UMC, Presbyterian Church of Dover,

First Southern Baptist Church, Christ Episcopal Church-Dover, Holy Cross Catholic Church and Hope UMC. We will be building a home in Frederica, Delaware for the Walls family. The Apostles Build

began with our future homeowner speaking to us on Sunday, February 24th during the 9:45 a.m. service and then joining us for fellowship hour. We had a special collection during the service to as-

sist us with meeting our financial commitment. The building will begin Saturday, March 2nd and continue through anticipated completion of Saturday, June 8th. Wesley Church will need individuals to attend on Saturday-March 2, 2013 at 7:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m. to participate in a day where all the

faith communities come together and build as a team. This is also the official groundbreaking cele-bration day and an exciting event for the family and our congregation. On Saturday-May 18, 2013

at 7:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Wesley UMC will have their own day to work as a team in painting and trim-ming the house. We are in need of volunteers who are 16 years of age or older to assist us on March 2nd and May 18th. No skills are required. God will equip those who are called. We will need

Dover Interfaith Men’s Shelter By: Wesley Missions Committee

Wesley UMC supports a variety of missions – on an international, national, regional, and local level. One of the local organizations we support is the Dover Interfaith Men’s Mission for Housing (Interfaith Men’s Shelter). The Men’s Shelter is a nonprofit organization of local faith communities concerned with the needs of homeless men in the Greater Dover area. Interesting facts about the shelter:

Approximately, 142 guests are sheltered per year The shelter can house 35 men at a time Over 600 homeless men have been sheltered since 2008

Guests have access to employment counseling (resumé writing, and more) Approximately 60% of the guests leave with full-time employment and access to housing

Three weeks a year, Wesley prepares, serves, and shares a meal with the men. We most recently helped during the week of February 4

th. During this week, our members spent approximately 83 volun-

teer hours at the shelter. We are planning on serving dinner again during the first full week of May. If you (or your committee) are inter-ested in helping, please contact Gerrie Willis at 734-5141, our shelter coordinator. A special “thanks” to all those who helped with this important cause.

The United Methodist Women will hold their Unit Meeting on Saturday, March 23rd at 8:30 a.m. We will meet in the Parlor and begin with a continental breakfast.

Our business meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. and after that we will have the opportunity to learn about and ex-perience a Labyrinth.

Our guide will be Mary VanHouse from St. Peter’s Episco-pal Church in Lewes and the labyrinth will be set up in Fellowship Hall.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Board of Trustees of Wesley Church would like to award a college scholarship

to an active Wesley Church member for the fall of 2013. If you are an active member of Wesley Church and will be enrolled in an institution of higher

learning this fall, please contact the church office at 678-9626 to apply for a scholarship. Please give your name, address and telephone number to the office and we will send you the application form which will outline the requirements. The deadline is April 1st, 2013.

If you have further questions about this Scholarship Fund, please contact Peni Warren (698-9528), Board of Trustees, Wesley U. M. Church.

REQUIREMENTS: The applicant must be: (1) A regularly attending participant at Wesley UMC, (2) Pursuing a career in full-time Christian service, or (3) Pursuing a career in “helping” profession (Nursing, teaching, social work, and child care are examples), (4) Pursuing an undergraduate de-

gree or a post high school education, (5) Pursuing an advanced degree, (6) First-time recipient of this scholarship (preferred) or (7) Repeat recipient (acceptable).

The applicant will be judged on the following in order of importance: (1) An essay that explains how the applicant has been inspired to pursue major career or field of study, (2) Christian service at Wesley United Methodist Church, (3) School and/or community service and (4) Academic success

If none of the applicants meet all requirements, the selection committee may elect to waive the career requirement and award a scholarship to the resulting superior compliant applicant.
