PRINCIPAL NEWS

Assembly The weekly assembly and Canteen will recommence tomorrow. Year 6 Commemorative Shirts Our very generous P&C have donated a year 6 shirt to each of our Year 6 students in their final year in Primary school. We will be presenting these shirts at this Friday’s assembly. We are organising to have the school photographer return to take a group shot of year 6 later this term. The students and school sincerely thank the P&C for their generosity and the work by Riley’s mum, Sarah in coordinating their manufacture. Thank you. Terania District Athletics Carnival Last Friday our school moved to Riverview Park, South Lismore for the Terania District Athletics Carnival. Students competed against students from Nimbin, Coffee Camp, Goolmangar, Jiggi, Larnook and Caniaba. All students were very well behaved and participated to the best of their ability. We were very successful on the day. Our school won the overall point score, the handicap trophy, 2 out of 3 ball game trophies and numerous individual champions or runners up. A fantastic effort by everyone. Thank you to the parents and carers for transporting the children to and from the venue. A big thankyou to Mrs Perren for organising this huge event and all our other staff members for ensuring the day was a success. The following students have qualified to compete at the Northern Rivers Zone PSSA Athletics championships on Thursday 22 August: Beau, Django, Willow W, Daniel, Rueben, Baylie, Amber B, Maddie, Lilly R, Ashlee and Melanie. Book Fair Our annual book fair will open this week. It is an opportunity for families to purchase good quality books for their children. The school receives a small commission from the sales which is used to replenish books in our library. Your support of this book fair is truly appreciated. Education Week 2019 – Every Student, Every Voice Our school held an Open day today as part of the State Wide Education Week celebrations. We commenced with a BBQ breakfast followed by showing some great student work samples and opening the doors to our classrooms. It was fantastic to see so many families visit our school and share the education journey with us. This year the theme for Education Week is a celebration of student empowerment and how we as a school, and as a system, build and develop skills our students need in order to have and express a voice during their educational journey and as an engaged global citizen. Having a voice opens up a conversation for clarity, enquiry and also explores possibility. Assessment and Reporting Survey A survey about assessment and reporting in our school has been presented at the Parent information evening and has been sent home to all families recently. We are seeking your input into the effectiveness of the semester 1 student report and interview process. As a school we are always trying to keep programs and systems meaningful and relevant, and by conducting surveys, we can implement change if it is required. We respectfully request that you fill in this anonymous surveys and return to school by Friday 16 August. Chooks Our chickens have started to lay eggs which is very exciting for the students. The eggs didn’t last long as some of our senior students quickly used them to whip up some cakes in the canteen to share across the school. Talk about fresh! 2020 Kindergarten Enrolments We are currently taking enrolments for 2020 Kindergarten. If you have a child that you wish to enrol at Blakebrook PS next year, please contact the office to collect an “Application to Enrol pack” and arrange an interview with the Principal. Department policy requires ALL enrolment applicants to meet with the Principal, even if they are in zone and have a sibling at the school. Our preferred method of contact is by email [email protected] If you know of a family with a child ready for ‘Big’ school in the local community, encourage them to contact the school for an appointment to discuss enrolment or to have a look at our wonderful school.

Have a great week - Allan Duroux

Gardening Club Notes

Our apologies for not submitting our monthly gardening notes last

week. However we are now back to normal so have a few comments

for all.

We picked our first pea last week and will be paying close attention so

that the children will be able to enjoy the harvest.

The beetroot and carrots are growing well as are the bok choy and

lettuce.

We have harvested a few second crop broccoli and hopefully we will

have a few more this week.

The cauliflower bed has been dug up and will be planted with

tomatoes in early September.

Finally we give an invitation to parents to call in and look over the

garden anytime they come to the school. We are here every

Thursday.

Kindest regards

Marion and John
