Banstead Downs is a progressive members’ club offering year-round golf for players of all ages

and all abilities on one of the UK’s finest downland courses.

We have invested more than £1.4million in recent years to both extend and improve the course and to modernise the clubhouse. We give a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors and to prospective new members.

Our adult Academy provides tuition to beginners and improvers and a route to a handicap. Likewise Junior members aged between 8 and 18 enjoy a development program and regular competitions.Our course, opened in 1890, was originally designed by James Braid and has recently been lengthened to 6,581 yards with a par of 71 and a SSS of 72.

Its chalky base ensures fantastic drainage which provides a fair test of golf for all standards of golfers all year round.The clubhouse facilities are exceptional and we are delighted to offer them as a venue for weddings, functions and busi-ness conferences and seminars.

The club was founded in 1890 by Ladies and was called Sutton Ladies Golf Club. The Men soon

began to join and in 1904 the name was changed to Banstead Downs Golf Club. The course was originally only 12 holes on land to the west of the Brighton Road but in 1904 a lengthened 18-hole course was opened with six holes to the east of the road. The architect was J H Taylor.

The lengthened 18-hole course was opened on 15th October 1904. The new course is undoubtedly unusual inasmuch as it has five short holes all running from north to south.

In 1932 the club became concerned about the public straying over the course on weekends and wrote to the Lord of the Manor requesting permission to make alterations to the course. When this was granted James Braid, the second member of The Great Triumvirate, was commissioned to make alterations to the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th holes.

Braid was an excellent course designer. He used his farming background to ensure that courses were well laid out and well drained.

We are thus proud to say that two of the greatest golfers of their generation have left their mark on Banstead Downs. Taylor and James Braid (five times each) – together with Harry Vardon (six victories) – won the Open Championship some 16 times between them from 1894 to 1914.

Banstead Downs was founded in 1890 and designed by James Braid. It winds its way across

the fast draining chalk down, which makes it extraordinarily resilient to wet weather. The course is often playable when many others are not, and temporary greens are almost unheard of.

The greens at Banstead have a deserved reputation for year-round excellence, being relatively fast but always fair. Together with the undulating fairways and the variety of challenges including the recently relocated bunkers, they make it a wonderful place for players of all levels to enjoy a round of golf in natural surroundings.

The course extensions - notably to the 1st, 2nd, 14th, 15th and 16th holes - were opened in May 2010 and extended the length of the course from the medal tees from 6,195 to 6,581 yards. The course par has risen from 69 to 71, and the Standard Scratch Score from 69 to 72.

The ladies are given two extra shots, with a pair of difficult long par-4s, the 4th and the 15th, being played as par 5s from the red tees. Even so, at 5,735 yards with a par of 73, this still makes for a challenging round of golf.

Members and guests also benefit from a full practice facility, chipping and short iron area plus a large practice putting green.

The Course



If you have never played Banstead Downs before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by

learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Ian Golding, our head PGA Professional.

Hole 1, 551 yards, par 5

A tough par 5, true three-shot hole. A good drive is needed to avoid the two fairway bunkers on the left. The second shot must be a bit to the left of the fairway to have a clear shot to the green. The green has some subtle breaks in it, a 5 on this hole is a good score.


A feature hole. A sweeping dogleg right-to-left hole. A drive favouring the left-hand side will leave the shortest second shot. Too much to the left will leave you blocked out from the green. The green situated in a bowl will require a careful second shot.


A tough tee shot across the corner of the fairway leaves you needing a good iron shot with one extra club to the uphill green.


Index 2 and one of the hardest par 4s on the course, with a tight drive needed towards the left-hand side of the right-sloping fairway, and a long, uphill second to a difficult green protected by bunkers on either side.

Tour the Course




A short par 4, in range for the longer hitters, but needing a careful lay-up to avoid the two new bunkers on the right edge of the fairway and a well-controlled pitch for most club golfers.


The first par 3, with club selection vital to avoid a very demanding downhill putt on the large and sloping green.


A long and tight par 4 playing a little shorter than the yardage, and with the challenge of a green sloping away from you.


A good par 3 surrounded by bunkers, with club selection again vital to find the right level on the two-tier green.


A par 5 normally playing downwind, so if you can avoid the fairway bunkers you have a good birdie opportunity.


The toughest hole on the course. The fairway slopes from right to left while the hole doglegs from left to right, and there is an uphill second shot to a small and well-protected target.




A longer par 3 with a green sloping from the right, and a bunker awaiting you on the left.


If you are feeling brave you can flirt with the right-hand fairway bunker, but if you are too cautious a left-hand bunker awaits you. The second is uphill to a slightly raised green.


The drive needs to be to the left, both to avoid the fairway bunkers and the two new bunkers placed tight to the right edge of the fairway.


A long par 5 with a blind tee shot over the brow of the hill. The lay-up shot has to be played well to the left to avoid the three fairway bunkers protecting the right half of the fairway. Playing to the green, you will have to avoid the unusual protection of a single hawthorn tree.

A tough par 4 which doglegs to the left. The tee shot has to flirt with the two bunkers on the right to open up the green for a clear second shot, which will play slightly shorter than the yardage into the green, which slopes away.


A classic short hole. The fairway slopes from left to right, the approach shot to the green, which slopes front to back, must be well placed to leave a good two-putt.


A fantastic-looking par 3, requiring an accurate short iron to a green sloping from back to front and well protected by bunkers.


A good par 4 to finish. Aim the drive towards the middle of the fairway to avoid the two well-placed bunkers on the right. Allow for the green also sloping from right to left when playing your approach.

Perhaps you have seen one of the Major championships on television and have been

inspired to give golf a try.

To the uninitiated, golf clubs can be intimidating places, especially if you have never played the game before. That first step can appear to be a daunting one, but it need not be.

Here at Banstead Downs we are committed to growing the game and offer a special Academy Membership aimed at giving you a solid foundation upon which to build and the launching pad for a lifetime’s enjoyment of a sport that never ceases to invigorate.

Each new Academy Member will receive:

• A lesson on etiquette within the first month of joining the club.• Group lessons on basics• 9 individual lessons on a monthly basis• A 9-hole playing lesson (three ball)

There are some limitations as to when Academy Members can play on the course, but ample opportunities still exist to experience the thrill of playing at Banstead Downs.

Academy Members can use the practice areas at any time and as they improve can join in alongside their fellow members in specially-organised events aimed at improving confidence in competition and in helping achieve a handicap.

Social membership is included in the package, allowing the chance to enjoy the excellent off-course facilities at Banstead Downs. And when (within two years) the player is deemed to have progressed sufficiently they will be invited to apply for membership of the club.

Banstead Downs is particularly proud of our Tour Professional Ross McGowan, who came

through the junior ranks at the club and is now making a name for himself playing the game for a living.

Ross finished in second place to Lee Westwood in the European Tour’s final tournament of 2009 in Dubai, taking him to 12th place in the European rankings at the end of the season.

Only a month earlier, Ross achieved the biggest victory of his career in October 2009, winning the Madrid Masters with a score of 25 under par, including a stunning third round of 60.

This victory followed a run of good form in his second year on the European Tour, which he joined successfully in 2008, finishing 70th in the Order of Merit in his rookie year. He originally qualified for the Tour by finishing 2nd in the 2007 Challenge Tour, his first

year as a professional having rounded off his amateur career in style the previous season by beating Oliver Fisher in the final of the English Amateur Championship. Ross’s outstanding record in Europe followed his graduation from the University of Tennessee in the United States.

Injury robbed Ross of a likely place in the Ryder Cup in 2010. Having spent many months in the qualification places a wrist injury sidelined him at a crucial time of the season and put paid to his hopes.

Banstead Downs has everything required for the focused golfer looking to better their game and

lower their handicap.

We have a large practice ground near the 10th tee of around 280 yards in length, allowing for any club in the bag to be hit. Members bring their own balls and hit off turf, which gives a much more accurate feedback as to how a player is actually striking the ball.

For those looking to work on their short game, there is also a pitching area with a practice bunker along with a chipping area for perfecting those par-saving up and downs from the edge of the green. There are two excellent practice putting greens, which mirror the fine surfaces to be found out on the course.

And for those who find time is at a premium, there are two nets which are perfect for getting loose before venturing to the first tee.

The Club offers a variety of Membership options, with the majority of Members being

in either the Full or 5-day Playing Categories. Other categories include those for younger Adults, Juniors, Country and Social Membership. There is also an Academy.

All playing Members are entitled to play either 5 or 7 days a week as determined by their Membership category, both in general play and in the wide range of competitions open to the various sections of the Club. Many Members also enjoy representing the Club in matches, which range from very competitive events through to the more social and traditional fixtures against other local clubs.

The Club has committed to full equality and is now in the process of agreeing and introducing the consequent changes to playing times, subscription rates, committee structures and Club Rules.

Our Academy Section provides Professional coaching, use of the course at certain times and full Social Membership for inexperienced golfers aiming for Full Membership.

We also have an active and well-managed Junior Section, with a proud record of producing not only the majority of our Club Champions, but also our European Tour player Ross McGowan, who won the Madrid Masters in 2009.

All Playing and Social members are entitled to full use of the clubhouse facilities, and to enjoy their choice of the Club’s social events which range from candlelit dinners to Elvis evenings, and from Abba nights to quiz evenings.

If you like playing in competitions and matches, Banstead Downs is the place for you! All sections of the Club

participate in external competitions and friendly matches as well as having numerous, traditional internal competitions.

The results of club qualifying competitions as well as handicaps can be found on the “HowDidiDo” website.

Gentlemen

The Gentlemen’s section enters teams in many national, county and local area competitions including the Surrey Fives, Surrey Scratch and Surrey Seniors KO, the Kelso Hamilton Trophy, The Daily Mail Foursomes, the Mail on Sunday Classic, the Lombard Trophy, the Warren League and the Hilliard League.

They also compete in annual inter-club events at 15 different local clubs, and there are some 20 annual ‘social’ matches

against local clubs as well as internal matches such as ‘New Members’ vs ‘Existing Members’, Gentlemen vs Ladies and England vs The Rest.

There are 12 monthly competitions (on Saturdays) and 21 midweek Stablefords (on Wednesdays) each year. There is a Club Championship Knock-Out, as well as Singles and Foursomes Knock-Out Trophies and a Better-Ball Winter League. There are some 16 singles and five pairs trophies for annual medal or Stableford competitions, and trophies for the best-performing pairs in the Sunday morning challenges against Captain & Pro, and Vice-Captain and Assistant Pro. We hope that’s enough to satisfy your competitive instincts!

Competitions



Ladies

Each year the Ladies’ section are represented in Surrey Competitions including The Hicks Trophy, Centenary Trophy, Pearson Trophy, Inter-Club Scratch and Handicap Foursomes and the Druce Trophy. They also compete in the Mail on Sunday Classic, Woodcote Fives, Daily Mail Foursomes, NSPCC 4 BBB, LGU Coronation Foursomes, Red Cross Eclectic and McMillan Charity Silver Spoons.

Friendly matches are enjoyed against 19 local clubs and even friendlier matches against other sections of Banstead Downs.

Internally, there are nine Stableford and 16 Medal competitions culminating in the Gold Medal, and 18 annual trophies for competitions in a variety of formats. The Lady Captain and Vice-Captain also play regular challenge matches against pairs of Lady Members.



Mixed

Nine mixed matches are played each year and all participants can take part in the end of season Mixed Trophy and Dinner. The Club also enters the Flitch Trophy for Senior married couples.

Internally, there are five annual Pairs Cups, and both Gentlemen and Ladies also compete in two major annual Club Singles Competitions.

Seniors

The Seniors compete in a wide variety of external and internal competitions and matches, the vast majority of them being run under the auspices of the Club’s Old & Bold Section.

Externally, they compete in the Surrey Seniors Inter-Club Knock-Out, and the winter is enlivened by the Surrey Seniors League. Matches are played against 13 other clubs on a home and away basis each summer, with many being played for a cup on an overall score basis. In addition, matches are played against the Club, the Ladies and the Juniors.

On Mondays there are 20 Stableford and medal and six cup competitions spread throughout the season. Spring and Autumn Meetings are fourball betterball events and the Christmas Cleek Competition has a novel format over 12 holes, with a player only allowed to carry four clubs and a putter. There are two summer knockouts - a Singles and drawn partners Greensomes. The Winter League competition allows two from each league to qualify for a Knockout. In all there are 14 cups.

In addition, the Seniors have a Club team Invitation Day in July and a Members’ Invitation Day in August or September.



The Junior Section at Banstead Downs has a strong history in developing junior members.

The Club’s most notable success is Ross McGowan who is a winner on the European Tour. In addition the club currently has three former Junior Members who are developing their skills through scholarships in America, and Mark Finbow, who came through the junior ranks, finished 2nd in the 2010 Surrey Men’s Order of Merit.

The Junior Section is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18, and we are actively recruiting new members, including less experienced players. To help all new Junior Members we have a coaching programme with the team of professionals at Banstead Downs. The programme includes lessons on driving, iron play, short game (including chipping, bunker play and putting) along with a lesson on the rules and etiquette of the game. A lesson on course management skills is also incorporated and this lesson is on the course with a member of the professional team.

One of the real benefits of joining Banstead Downs is that we have four tee positions ranging from the blue tees (beginners and young Juniors) through to the white tees used for championship events. This ensures all Juniors regardless of ability or age can enjoy the course and participate in all competitions.

Juniors



Throughout the year we have a number of internal competitions. The year is broken into three calendar sections winter, spring and summer. The top three Juniors in each calendar section represent the Club in our Junior Open, the Banstead Downs Pro-Am or three Junior Invitations respectively. In addition there is an Order of Merit, which runs throughout the year and is keenly contested, with the winner being awarded the Golfer of the Year.

In addition to several internal competitions, our Juniors enjoy the opportunity to experience competitive matches by representing the club in external competitions including the Kingston League, the Keppler League, the East Surrey Masters and the Fairways Trophy, as well as attending a number of other clubs’ Invitation days.

We are very pleased to welcome County Card holders and other visitors

to Banstead Downs from Monday to Thursday and ask non-County Card holders to bring a handicap certificate with them.

We do not have reserved tee-times apart from those for competitions and matches, the timings of which you can see on the calendar page of our website.

Outside these reservations, we do have a schedule of when 2/3 and 4-balls tee-off from either the 1st or 10th tees, which again can be accessed from the website. We suggest that you always first check with our Pro Shop on 020 8642 6884.

The clubhouse is generally open from 8am to 7pm from October to March, closing at 7pm on Sunday and at 8pm on other days unless we are hosting a function.

From April to September these hours are extended. The clubhouse again opens at 8am (7.30pm Saturdays) but closes at 8pm on Sunday and at 9.30pm on other days unless we are hosting a function.

Please take a moment to visit our website and read our rules on dress regulations to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible. A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the clubhouse at all times.

We have found that it is best for both Societies and Members to make Thursday our Society day, and we offer a variety of options from which Societies are welcome to construct their own ‘package’ to meet their needs.

Start your day with a cup of coffee and a bacon roll or full English breakfast. For lunch we offer a range of filling golfer’s favourites such as ham, egg & chips, lasagne, salad & chips, a sandwich platter & pastries or Ploughman’s. Or you can opt for a two or three-course lunch or evening meal, or both.

Choose to play 18 holes, but bear in mind that our 36-hole package offers exceptional value.

The golf shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. We can also organise longest drive and nearest the pin markers should you wish.

The existing lounge was refurbished in 2010 to provide two separate function rooms, each with their own bar and perfect for private dining and parties. Banstead Downs has a superb Function Room available for parties, banquets, conferences

With excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty

of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Banstead Downs Golf Club, with a lively social calendar on offer.

The main annual events at the Club are the Burns’ Night Dinner, the Captain’s Dinner, the Club Dinner and Dance, the Carol Evening, the Christmas Party and the New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance.

We also have a range of purely social ad-hoc events each year, such as Dinner ‘Theme’ evenings, as well as a range of golf-linked social events such as the summer evening 12-hole Stableford competitions followed by a social supper, the Christmas Fayre, the Warren League Trophy and Dinner, and the Ladies’ Golf and Christmas Lunch.

Non-golfing activities also include regular Bridge and Duplicate Bridge meetings.

Location

Banstead Downs is situated on the A217 which runs from Sutton to Reigate, intersecting with the M25 at Junction 8. It is just to the south of Sutton & Cheam and 7.3 miles north of the M25. The clubhouse is at the southern end of Burdon Lane, in Belmont. For those of you with Sat Nav, the postcode is SM2 7DD.

Directions (for those of you without Sat Nav):

Coming North from Reigate/M25 on the A217

Just over 6 miles north of the M25 you go straight across the A2022 from Epsom to Purley at a large traffic lights, heading

towards Central London and Sutton. After 0.9 miles of dual carriageway you come to a ‘Y’ junction at a roundabout, and you take the left fork towards Wimbledon and Central London, staying on the A217 (the right fork goes to Belmont and Sutton along the Brighton Road). About 200 yards after the roundabout, take the first left into The Crescent, then first left again into the ‘No Through Road’ leading to the clubhouse.

Coming South from London on the A217 (Sutton-bypass)

You cross the A232 from Epsom/Ewell/Cheam to Carshalton/Sutton/Croydon near Cheam Village, then drive for 0.8 miles before turning right at the traffic lights into Northey Avenue, then

immediately left at the mini-roundabout into Burdon Lane. Go for another 0.6 miles, and when the road turns left, watch for traffic from your left then go straight ahead into the short cul-de-sac and Club car park.

Public TransportThe nearest railway station is Belmont, which is less than half a mile away. Cheam, just over a mile away, has even more frequent services to London Victoria.
