Chevrolet is all set to debut the next-generation Malibu in New York and are also planning on giving the public a look at the

hybrid option of the Malibu as well. Chevrolet says the Malibu Hybrid is expected to yield a combined fuel consumption of an impressive 5.2L/100km. Powering the Malibu Hybrid will be an all-new direct-injection 1.8L 4-cylinder, mated to a two-motor drive unit, not dissimilar to the 2016 Chevrolet Volt drive unit. The drive unit will provide additional power to assist the engine during acceleration. This engine and dual-motor drive unit combination will be good for 182 horsepower of total system power. The new engine also features Chevrolet’s first application of Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery, or EGHR, technology. This tech takes the heat the exhaust generates and sends it on into the cabin and engine. The new 80-cell, 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack takes care of electric power in the system and can propel the Malibu to 90 km/h on electricity alone. At higher speeds and loads, the Malibu automatically switches over to the gas engine, as expected. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Nissan Announces $35,900 CAD Starting M.S.R.P. for All-New Maxima

Nissan has announced Canadian pricing for the all-new 2016 Nissan Maxima, which made its world debut at the recent

New York International Auto Show. The eighth-generation of Nissan’s iconic “4-Door Sports Car” is scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealers nation-wide beginning this summer. The all-new Maxima, a virtual clone of the stunning Nissan Sport Sedan Concept, is low-er, longer and lighter than the previous generation de-sign. Helping Maxima push the performance envelope in its segment is a complete-ly revised 300-horsepower 3.5-litre VQ-series V6 engine and new performance-oriented Xtronic transmission. The compre-hensive re-engineering effort also re-sulted in a 15 per cent increase in highway fuel economy. The new Maxima also features a premium bespoke crafted interior, anchored by a command central driver’s cockpit, that rivals luxury vehicles.Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices* (MSRP) for the 2016 Nissan Maxima: Maxima

SV $35,900 CAD, Maxima SL $38,950 CAD, Maxima SR $41,100 CAD, Maxima Platinum $43,300

CAD Maxima’s next-generation technology

features include standard NissanCon-nect with navigation and avail-

able 11-speaker Bose® premium audio system, NissanCon-nect Services powered by SiriusXM, and Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD). The 2016 Maxima also offers an extensive range of safety, security and driving aids, in-cluding Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW),

Canadians love the efficiency and nimble performance of subcompacts – and this year we’ll give drivers even more of what they love, with an all-new Yaris Sedan,” said Larry Hutchinson, Vice President at Toyota Canada Inc. “Coming

later this year, the Yaris Sedan embodies bold, aggressive styling and premium fea-tures.”

The new 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan is more than just a new car with a familiar name. Responding to the needs and desires of Canadian drivers, this new premium sub-compact brings upscale features, dynamic handling, and fresh styling to an efficient vehicle that’s popular in a market segment that Canadians love. Take one look, and the Yaris Sedan impresses with a striking profile that stands out from the crowd. Up front, the bold new face of Yaris features sharp-eyed headlights and a hexagon lower grille, while a spacious trunk gives the rear a distinctive look.

Premium details abound – from the piano black bumpers, to the chrome grille sur-round and tailpipe, to the power-adjustable heated exterior mirrors, to the keyless entry offered as standard on all models.

Open the door and slip behind the sporty steering wheel, and admire the surprising-

ly roomy cabin filled with premium amenities. Steering wheel mounted switches put audio and Bluetooth con-trols within easy reach, while the available Display Audio System features a seven-inch touch screen, six speakers, two USB audio inputs, and an Auxiliary audio jack. Avail-able amenities include an upgraded multimedia system with voice recognition controls and a back-up camera.

The Yaris Sedan is standard equipped with an impressive list of features – including cruise control, power windows and power door locks – all set off with chrome accents and the soft-touch trim and surfaces one expects from a premium sport sedan.

The trunk is spacious, and made even more versatile thanks to a standard 60/40 split folding rear seat. If the style promises fun, the performance delivers. Hit the Push Button Start and Yaris Sedan’s high-spirited, 106 horsepower, 1.5L four-cylinder engine comes to life with a sporty yet muted rasp.

The Yaris Sedan is offered with a choice of compact and lightweight six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions: The manual transmission features a short stroke for quick shifting while the available automatic transmission with lock-up torque converter delivers a direct-shift feel and impressive efficiency, plus a Sport Mode feature that boosts torque for more spirited driving.

To squeeze the most out of this drive train, Toyota designed agility into the Yaris Se-dan with a highly-rigid body structure enhanced with front and rear suspensions that strike a balance between sporty handling and ride comfort. Toyota engineers then added steering and braking systems carefully tuned to deliver the handling worthy of a sport sedan.

And because the Yaris Sedan is a Toyota, it’s also the subcompact that’s big on safety, featuring active and passive systems that work together to keep driver and occu-pants safe.

The 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan arrives at Toyota Dealers across Canada later this year. More details, including additional specifications and pricing, will be available closer to the on-sale date.

When Scion launched in Canada, the brand set out to reach younger and new to Toyota customers. Five years later, with an average customer age of 37.5 years and 69 per cent of Scion buyers new to the Toyota Canada

family, Scion achieved just that. This year, Scion is taking its next step in the brand’s evolution, with a new phase of dealer expansions. The current total of 94 Scion dealerships in Canada will rise to 145 as of July. This means almost 60 per cent of Toyota dealerships in Canada will soon have dedicated Scion displays – allowing the brand to reach new customers in markets where the brand is not yet available. “This is a great time for Scion in Canada, and we’re anticipating a new wave of mo-mentum for the brand,” said Cyril Dimitris, Director, and Scion Canada. “Scion is strengthening its commitment to Canada by seeking to engage and connect with customers in different ways, and bringing Scion closer to the homes of many Canadians is just the next step.”With a mission to bring younger buyers into the Toyo-ta Canada family, Scion has launched five unique models, including the tC and FR-S, as well as the brand new Scion iM which will arrive later in 2015.The iM is a sleek, fun and versatile five-door hatch-back that is perfect for Canadians who value fuel

efficiency, sporty handling and loads of cargo room. The “i” stands for individuality and intriguing, and the “M” represents modern, multifaceted and magnetic. The Sci-on iM will inspire its owners with a sense of spontaneity while maintaining the peace of mind provided by Toyota’s renowned quality, dependability, reliability and safety. Not just with the new iM, but across all its vehicles, Scion has a foundation built on passion. Last year, Scion invited its owners to pursue their passions by launching a major brand campaign called “Powering Passion”. Scion reached out to owners in Canada to learn more about the activities they’re passionate about, and the impor-tant role their Scion vehicles played in their lives. The stories of six individuals were selected to be showcased – each with a unique story to tell.In addition, Scion has developed various grassroots programs in the Canadian

motorsport and music sector. This includes Scion’s involvement as the title sponsor

of Formula Drift Canada, as well as partnerships with Canadian drift

drivers. Scion is also active on the music and Canadian cul-

tural scene, supporting emerging music artists through “Scion Sessions”

and other events, such as Villa Para-dizo music festival in Montreal.

Subaru Unveils STI Performance Concept -By Veeno DewanSubaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) announced the unveiling of the STI Performance

Concept at the recent New York International Auto Show. The STI Performance Concept signifies the North American expansion of Subaru Tecnica International,

Inc. (STI) – the performance division of Subaru – in its three core business areas: parts and accessories, complete cars and motorsports. Looking ahead, parts and accessories as well as further models tuned by STI will be available in Canada, focusing on suspension, braking, chassis and aerodynamic upgrades. There is also potential for an increased engineering presence in future motorsports activity. Complete cars and performance parts available now in Japan focus on the WRX STI, Forester and BRZ models. The Japanese domestic market uses the nomenclature “S model” as its naming for the WRX STI and uses “tS” on BRZ and Forester vehicles that have STI components, but a naming convention for any future North American models has not yet been established. The STI Performance Concept is a showcase for the engineering prowess and tuning capabilities of STI, featuring the racing engine developed by STI for the BRZ Super GT racecar, suspension and chassis components and aerodynamic upgrades. The STI Performance Concept was developed for display purposes to announce the launch of the North American expansion of the STI brand and performance division of Subaru. There are no plans for Subaru to build or produce any production model resembling the STI Performance Concept, including a turbocharged BRZ. This is

strictly a concept vehicle with a specially designed race engine prepared for track-use only. “At STI we know from our racing that to win, it is important not only to have high power, but also that all aspects of performance are balanced over the whole car,” said Yoshio Hirakawa, president of Subaru Tecnica International, Inc. “When we achieve this balance, the driver feels that the car is easy to handle and reliable, and he can use it fully to the limits of its performance. Our plan is to produce cars and accessories that drivers can really enjoy, not only through power alone, but also to deliver balanced performance over the whole car.” “Subaru has an unwavering commitment to safety, performance, versatility and durability,” said Shiro Ohta, chairman, president and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. “The North American expansion of STI, the performance division of Subaru, speaks to these underlying characteristics of the Subaru brand and further enhances our commitment to performance.” STI was founded as Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries’ motor sports division in 1988. In 1989, a first-generation Subaru Legacy, tuned by STI, broke the FIA-certified world speed record over 100,000 kilometers. From there, STI moved on to the World Rally Championship, winning 3 constructors championships and 3 driver championships for Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg. It currently competes in the Nurburgring 24 Hour Challenge race winning its class two times in 2011 and 2012 and also in the Super GT series with its BRZ-based Super GT.

-By Veeno Dewan2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Debut Seventh Hybrid in Toyota LineupThere’s a new hybrid in town, and it’s called RAV4. Toyota Canada has been

the overwhelming gas-electric hybrid sales leader since 2004. Now, 15 years after the first Prius was sold in Canada, Toyota has unveiled its seventh hybrid

offered as part of the refreshed 2016 RAV4. Launching this fall, the RAV4 Hybrid will be targeted towards young adventure-seeking couples looking for a vehicle that provides utility, versatility, capability and excellent fuel efficiency. Fewer fill-ups will become the norm with the addition of a new, fuel efficient RAV4 Hybrid. Better fuel economy comes without sacrifice, as the RAV4 Hybrid will deliver more horsepower and better acceleration than the con-ventional RAV4. A no compromise vehicle, the RAV4 Hybrid will be offered in two premium grades; XLE and Limited. Both grades will be equipped with an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i). Also available will be unique 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels and ten exterior colours (including a new blue). The conventional gas version RAV4 will come in four grades: LE, XLE, Limited and the new SE. Together with the new Hybrid XLE and Limited, all 2016 RAV4 models will feature refreshed exterior styling, providing a sleeker, more dynamic appearance. It starts with a new, stronger look-ing front fascia with an available LED trifecta (Headlights, Daytime Running Lights and Hi-Lo Headlights). The new styling extends along the lower rocker panel to the rear bumper for a flowing visual appeal. A new rear bumper and lift gate with avail-able LED taillights add a premium touch. Additional new exterior features include front and rear silver skid plate garnishes on most models and a standard shark fin antenna. An all-new wheel lineup, and three new exterior paint colours (Silver Sky

Metallic, Black Currant Metallic, and Electric Storm Blue) round out the exterior de-sign.Toyota listened to customer feedback and added more refinement and technology to the interior. Additional convenience technologies include available front and rear parking sonar, available Smart Key, and integrated garage door opener (stan-dard on Limited grade). All RAV4 SE and Limited models will come standard with SiriusXM All-Access Radio with a 3-month complimentary trial. RAV4 will also offer a new available Bird’s Eye View Monitor. This Toyota-first tech-

nology utilizes four cameras that are mounted on the front, side mirrors and rear of the vehicle to

give the driver a panoramic view of their sur-roundings. The system offers drivers assis-

tance when parallel parking, and when pulling in and out of parking spaces. The

Bird’s Eye View Monitor system also has an industry-first feature called Perimeter Scan,

that gives drivers a live rotating 360-degree view of what is around the vehicle, helping them

see objects that could be in the way. The new SE grade features a sport-tuned suspension,

providing a more dynamic and responsive driving experi-ence. The SE also adds premium convenience features and

performance styling cues, inside and out. The RAV4 started the small SUV segment craze 20 years ago. Five years later, Toyota introduced hybrids to the North American market, raising the bar for excellent fuel economy at an affordable price. Each has helped change the automotive land-scape. The arrival of the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid will be a natural fit for young buyers seeking the winning combination of affordable SUV utility and the fuel efficiency of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

FRIDAY Apr 10, 2015www.swmediagroup.caAUTO TRENDS WEEKLY AUTO TRENDS WEEKLY

1. Nissan Micra ($9,998) The Nissan Micra is one of the better sub compacts on the market. The base five door- hatchback model arrives with a manual transmission and wind up windows, but does have a sprightly 1.6L DOHC four-cylinder engine with 109 hp and 107 pound-feet of torque. It is a fun car to drive with a quick shifting five-speed manual transmission and is fun to drive. Fuel economy is good at 8.8 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.6 L/100 km on the highway.

2. Mitsubishi Mirage ($9,998 -$12,995)The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the most fuel-efficient non -hybrid cars in Canada, Thanks to a tiny 74 horsepower, 1.2L three -cylinder engine and a five-speed transmission- Fuel efficiency is rated at an impressive 5.3 L/100 km on the highway or 6.4 L/100 km in the city. The Mirage is pretty basis with its equipment spec, and it would be worth stepping up to the higher grade model to get some extra features. It is plain and simple and comes in some bright fun colors. Cheap and cheerful, the tiny Mitsubishi does come with an amaz-ing 10 year warrantee- so worth considering.

3. Fiat 500 POP ($13,495) The stylish European designed Fiat 500 POP is miniscule, and comes as three- door version, cool cabrio (At a premium price) or as the much bigger and more expensive 500L five-door model. The three-door POP comes equipped with a 1.4L engine with a five-speed manual transmission. Very stylish inside and out with delightful European touches, the three door however, does suffer from a cramped backseat and not much legroom in the rear. Despite this, it is a fun to drive car with very good fuel economy at 5.8 litres per 100 km.

4. Hyundai Accent ($13,549)The Accent is a sleek, good-looking car with Hyundai’s signature flowing design. Equip-ment levels are high, and it arrives in either a sedan and hatch version. It is fairly fuel effi-cient to boot with the L version’s 1.6-liter engine mated to a six speed manual transmission. Fuel economy is rated at City 8.7L/100km, Highway 6.3L/100km, Combined 7.6L/100km6L from the GDI DOHC Engine. A very comfortable and well equipped car with an iPod/CD au-dio system as standard, power windows, SiriusXM satellite radio, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, ABS, heated sideview mirrors, rear window defroster. Highly rated and a good all-around buy.

Sub Compact Car Shootout! The Top 12 Most Affordable Cars in Canada

5. Chevrolet Spark ($13,745)The Chevrolet Spark looks tiny, yet seats four adults comfortably. Its stylish looks are at-tractive and it can be optioned with some cool technology features. The Spark is powered by an EcoTec 1.2L four-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual tranny. While there is an AM/FM radio equipped with an auxiliary input jack, there is no CD player. The car also comes with a powertrain warranty of five-years/160,000 km. It is a fun, cheerful car and a great first vehicle for a young person.

6. Nissan Versa Note ($14, 298)The 2014 Nissan Versa 1.6 Hatchback is bigger than the Nissan Micra and more stylish with a surprisingly roomy interior. The base model arrives with the same engine as the Micra - a 1.6-litre, DOHC, four-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. of torque hooked to a five-speed manual transmission. There is a little more refinement to the Versa, and it looks and feels weighty and substantial. Highly recommended.

7. Ford Fiesta ($14,394)The Ford Fiesta S starts at $14,394 for both the hatchback and sedan versions, and is an-other recommended buy. Safety is very high with seven airbags as standard and Ford’s Ad-vanceTrac Electronic Stability Control system. Power is via a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed auto transmission. An AM/FM/CD player with audio input jack and a high quality interior are standouts.

8. Mazda2 ($14,450) The smart looking Mazda2 hatchback looks really small, thanks to tiny front and rear overhangs, but seats four adults in comfort. The Mazda2 arrives with a fuel-efficient 1.5L four-cylinder engine, rated at 100 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-Speed manual is standard. Power windows and locks are standard in the Mazda2. Fun to drive with good handling, it is well finished and robust.

9. Honda Fit DX ($14,495)One of the class leaders, and more at the top end of the sub compact in terms of price, equipment and quality. Superbly versatile, roomy and well equipped ─ The $15,000 Fit base DX comes with a 130-hp, 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, power windows, traction con-trol, anti-lock brakes, an AM/FM/CD system with an auxiliary input jack, and also comes standard with a colour touchscreen and Bluetooth. Honda’s magic seat feature allow for excellent passenger and cargo carrying flexibility. Highly recommended.

10. Toyota Yaris hatchback CE ($14,595)The cute, three-door Yaris hatchback is well proven and comes extremely highly equipped when it comes to safety. There are nine airbags, including front seat cushion airbags, which make it a top pick in my opinion. It is also well equipped with power, steering, power locks and a class leading as standard colour touchscreen. A 1.6-liter engine hooked to a five speed manual gearbox delivers a fuel efficiency rating of 5.2 L/100 km (highway).

11. Kia Rio ($15,630)The Kia Rio LX is one of the best-equipped sub-compact cars you can buy and is a bargain for the price. There is a fuel-efficient 1.6L, four-cylinder engine with a six speed manual transmission as standard. The equipment list also features: a radio/CD stereo system, aux. and USB input ports, dual front power outlets, electronic stability control, Smart, contem-porary looking and roomy the Rio is a good family hauler.

12) Chevrolet Sonic ($15,895)The Chevrolet Sonic and Spark hatchback look similar, but the Sonic is better looking more substantial and powerful. In addition the Sonic comes as a 5-door hatchback or a 4-door sedan while the Spark, is only offered as a 5-door hatchback. The Sonic is different un-der the hood as well and offers two engines that both produce 138 horsepower: a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder producing 125 lb-ft of torque, and a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that offers better fuel economy and 148 lb-ft of torque. With more features, a better interior and more power the Sonic is a good all-round sub compact car for all the family.

Need a second car or a new car for a younger member of the family? Buying second hand does make sense, but the lower your budget, the less of a reliable bargain of a car you will find is usually how it works. No doubt…a new car is an expensive proposition. However aim your sights a little lower from a brand new BMW or a Mercedes and you will be surprised at what is available brand new for under $16,000 in the sub-compact cars. As a guide; sub compact cars

are sized under the compact class, and come with small, economical four- cylinder engines. They can range from basic Spartan specifications to downright luxuri-ous as you add options or opt for higher range models. Buyer should beware however, low sticker prices look attractive, but are for all, but the basic models and mostly do not include destination freight, Pre- delivery Inspection or Dealer prep prices that generally add from $1000 to $2000 plus to the MRSP. Other cost tacked on also can annoy and surprise you. However do your research; choose models wisely, ensure you know the dealer invoice price (What the dealer paid) and you can still get a good deal. Remember options like: automatic transmissions, electric windows, Power features, navigation systems, and other goodies can jack the price up considerably. Here is our guide to the most affordable sub-compact cars in Canada. Happy hunting.

For 2015 the all-new, tenth generation 2014 Chevrolet Impala returns with a fresh contemporary

design and some newly minted mojo. For openers a dramatic, long lean body exterior is now offered with some real all-American flair. The recessed side character line adds some tension and speed to the profile and a radical c-pillar puts some flourish along with some nice chrome trim on the exterior. The Impala arrives with a base 2.4L 4-cylinder engine producing 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque or a bigger; more powerful 3.6L V6 with 305 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Also new is an attractive, contemporary interior with a cool dual cockpit theme and the use of higher quality materials. The centre stack is attractively done and easy on the eye. There is a richer look and more substantial padding on the doors, armrest and dash. The cabin feels more generous and well- upholstered. The front seats are

superbly comfortable and

feature plenty of legroom. Likewise front headroom and shoulder

room as in most domestic cars, is more than ample The dash is also bright and well laid out with clear, legible instruments and the addition of an 8” touchscreen relaying and operating the Impalas climate, navigation and entertainment systems. There is also a smaller information screen between the gauges that is handy for relaying info at a quick glance. Push a button and the centre display rises to reveal a lockable secret storage cubby for valuables. The 2015 Chevrolet offers a slew of technology, including the newest generation MyLink infotainment system. Voice activation is used for navigation programming, dialing phone numbers and for the audio songs.

We have all been there at some point and expe-rienced that horrible gnawing feeling as your vital to work, life and home vehicle breaks

down and need repairs. You can’t help but think a lot of the time, that you’re going to get fleeced into over-paying by the garage. However there are a few simple tips to avoid this:1) Prevention is better than Cure. If you don’t ever check the health of your vehicle and ignore any poten-tial problems you can expect to spend a lot of money fixing problems that could have been prevented later. The golden rule perhaps for saving money is “don’t put it off or ignore it”. this means not ignoring things like strange noises, vibrations, and weird things that happen when you start and drive your vehicle. For example; if your brakes are making noises, get them checked. It may mean they need new brake pads or some sort of adjustment. If you put it off, your brake pads could grind down on the brake rotors. Its not only unsafe, you end up having to replace the rotors and calipers instead of just the pads, which is an easy fix. Hit a pothole or curb in your car and find you steer-ing is out of whack and now pulls to the side a bit? – ignore it and it’s not only dangerous it means uneven tire wear and quicker replacement. Same with things like oil, water and other fluid leaks. They leak for a rea-son! Something is busted, weak or about to break. Ig-nore any leak around the engine and d transmission no matter how small and before you know it, you’re spending thousands on a rebuild or a new engine or transmission.2) Don’t ignore the Check Engine Light. Ahh!!! The dreaded check engine light! It’s easy to ignore if your vehicle still trundles along. It could be something in-

nocuous, but you should ignore this warn-ing at your peril. With all aspects of a car computerized nowadays, the check engine light could mean anything. Unless you can run your own diagnostics with some com-puter apps and cables you can buy, its best to get a mechanic to check and get the problem fixed right away. If you are lucky

it could be a common problem such as a loose wire, an intermittent connection or a bad sensor that is rela-tively cheap and easy to fix. Ignore the check engine light for long enough and something minor can easily escalate into something major. Something that would of cost a few dollars or a few hundred to fix could easily end up costing thousands 3) Check Car Forum websites. This may seem odd, but do an internet search for your cars make, model, year and you can probably find out immediately what the most common problems are with you vehicle and what to expect. Forums are also great for getting feedback from owners who have handled these problems and from mechanics who have actually fixed or come across these problems and are willing to tell you how much a good shop should charge. You may find your cars problem may actually be a recall issue and should be covered under a recall notice and fixed free by the manufacturer. If not, you may at least find the problem to be a common issue and learn how it that it can be fixed or the cheapest solution to get it repaired. At the very least, researching will yield

valuable nuggets of information on your vehicle. 4) Get a second opinion. If it is unavoidable and you have to get the vehicles problem fixed at a mechanic, even if you’ve found a reputable garage or mechanic, that doesn’t mean you can’t still ask around and get a second opinion. Especially true if you think you’re be-ing conned into repairs that don’t need doing or if you feel instinctively that things feel right in your interac-tion with mechanic.5) Get written estimates for repairs. Good for compari-son and shopping around for quotes. Make sure you don’t share the first garage’s diagnosis and estimate with the second one. See what the second garage says the problem is, and how much they’re willing to charge you for it. Then compare both estimates and quotes - The difference can be staggering as to how much money you can save.

The very capable Mitsubishi RVR is a mid-size SUV that has done rather well in Canada with good sales since its 2010 in- troduction. For

2015 the RVR has a few minor changes. Of significance is the revised and upgraded continuously variable transmission (CVT) that offers better fuel economy, and new LED headlights for the up-scale GT model. The RVR underwent some major revision in 2014 and continues as a handsome, good looking, and very capable SUV. There are five trim levels: ES 2WD, SE 2WD, SE AWC, SE AWC Limited Edition, and GT AWC. Front-wheel-drive models come standard with a five-speed manual, but can be had with the CVT for an extra $1,300 – it’s standard on AWC (All-Wheel Control) vehicles. All vehicles come with the standard 2.0-litre engine, which pro-duces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Prices range from $19,998 for the ES FWD model to $28,898 for the GT AWC. The Mitsubishi RVR relies on a highly ef-ficient four-cylinder engine with either a 5-speed manual transmission or with a Sportronic 6-speed CVT with magnesium-alloy paddle shifters. Coupled with a com-pact, lightweight body, the Mitsubishi RVR was designed from the beginning to deliver “smart” performance. An energy-recycling regenerative braking system, eco-friendly technology such as parasitic drag-reducing electric steering (EPS) and wind tunnel-tested aerodynamics give the Mitsubishi RVR excellent fuel economy ratings. Showcasing a premium, value-minded list of features, the RVR is packed with cut-ting edge entertainment, driver’s aid technologies and advanced safety features. Features such as Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), and Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) are just a few of RVRs premium features. Order a GT model and the equipment list includes automatic climate control, heated seats, all the usual power assists, tilt-telescope wheel with audio and cruise controls, fast key entry, a panoramic sunroof and roof rails. A $3,500 package adds naviga-tion, leather, a power driver’s seat and a rear-view camera. Cabin-wise the RVR has a spacious front cabin and enough room in all quarters. However the rear cabin would

be a tight squeeze for three adults. Cargo capacity is 614 litres with the rear seatback upright and 1,402 with

the seat down. The RVR is powered by a 2.0-litre, double-overhead-cam engine rated at 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque and power is transmitted to all four wheels in the AWD models by Mitsubishi’s world-class, rally developed All Wheel Control system. The Sportronic CVT can be semi manually shifted via the magnesium paddle shifters that

allow for six default six ratios. On the road, the RVR is quiet at highway speeds, although the CVT drone is still present but not so irritating as some units on other rivals vehicles. 148 Horsepower may not sound like a lot, but the RVR dis-plays acceptable acceleration. Steering is well modulated and nicely weighted and it’s obvious that the tweaked suspension allows for a more comfortable ride. What seem like firmer spring rates allow for more cargo-hauling capabilities. In the wet and slippery surfaces, the RVR feels sure-footed and handles various road surfaces. The RVR’s fuel economy rating is 8.5 li-tres/100 km city in the city and 6.6 li-tres/100 km highway. To sum up the RVR is a smart-sized, cross-over that combines excellent fuel-efficiency with premium

features and greater functionality. Like any Mitsubishi, one of the RVR’s biggest sell-ing points is its standard warranty – 5 years/100,000 km comprehensive coverage and 10 years/160,000 km powertrain. Highly recommended. 2015 Mitsubishi RVR Base Price: $19,998 to $28,998 plus options

Safety is also well catered for with a range of systems: An optional adaptive cruise control uses radar technology to calculate traffic ahead then adjusts the Impala’s speed accordingly or brings the vehicle to a safe full stop, if necessary. Collision Mitigation Braking is also present, and uses an audio warning and, if necessary, applies the brakes to avoid a collision.

The Impala is also admirably quite on the road with such measures as laminated glass and acoustic foam between body panels to insulate road noise and vibration. The 2.4 liter four cylinder engine is good for its performance and the 182 horsepower is perfectly adequate, however the bigger V6 engine turns the Impala into a much faster accelerating and more powerful sedan and gives it some more spark should you need it. This engine is rated at 11.1L/100km city and 6.9L highway. For the money the Impala comes incredibly well equipped with luxury and option packs that won’t break the bank and would cost you tens of thousands of dollars more in higher prices imports. Highly recommended if a big comfortable easy to drive sedan on your list. Auto review by Veeno Dewan.2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ Sedan base price $39,845. Price as tested with options and destination charge $46,300.
