All-New 2016 Honda Pilot SUV to Make Debut at 2015 Canadian

International Auto Show

A completely re-engineered and redesigned Honda Pilot SUV will make its debut at the 2015 Canadian International Auto Show on February 12. The all-new, eight-passenger Pilot SUV will raise the

stakes in the mainstream three-row SUV segment with new technology, advanced safety, improved fuel economy and enhanced family utility and versatility. The new Pilot represents a dramatic shift in design, while showcasing

new standout technologies, versatility, and dynamics currently unavail-able in the mainstream SUV segment. The redesigned Pilot SUV will fur-

ther augment a Honda light truck lineup that includes the recently rede-signed Canadian-made Honda CR-V and the all-new Honda HR-V crossover,

launching this spring. The original Honda Pilot was introduced in 2002 as the first mainstream eight-passenger SUV to feature car-like unitized body construction, deliver-ing more refined driving dynamics, better fuel economy and superior cabin

space in a family-oriented sport-utility vehicle.

Mitsubishi gears up for 2015 with a new range of vehicles and

great deals!

Mitsubishi Motors will demonstrate to show goers of the 2015 Canadian International Auto Show that the new Out-lander PHEV offers it all: The latest electric vehicle technology, superior four-wheel-drive handling, proven sport util-ity design, and range-extending capability.

Already the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in Europe, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – coming to our shores next year – will be on display for the first time in Ontario at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Feb. 13-22. The display Outlander PHEV – a current Euro-specification production vehicle in “Technical Silver”, is accompanied by a dem-onstration model; essentially, a see-through cutaway to help explain the world-class PHEV technology, including: • the world’s only twin-electric motor four-wheel drive plug-in hybrid• 60 kilowatt output drive battery. Super All-Wheel Control 4WD system configuration and • Three distinct driving modes with six driver-select brake regeneration technology modes and a 2.0-litre gasoline engine to drive the on-board generatorWhen Outlander PHEV arrives in Canada next year it will look (and drive) quite differently from the European model. While pricing, specifications and design changes will be announced at launch, at this time Mitsubishi Motors expects Outlander PHEV will set the new standard for four-wheel-drive compact sport utility plug-in hybrids in Canada. Also on display at the Mitsubishi Motors south MTCC booth is the Lancer SE AWC Limited Edition. Featuring the 168-horsepower, 16-valve, 2.4-litre DOHC MIVEC engine, Lancer SE AWC Limited Edition is Canada’s lowest-priced compact sedan with driver-selectable 4WD. And during January and February 2015, Mitsubishi Motors dealerships are offering power glass sunroof, fog lights and com-plemented by leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob and an exhaust finisher at no cost – a $2,000 value. The MSRP for the well-equipped Lancer SE AWC Limited Edition – inclusive of Mitsubishi’s electronically controlled, driver-select-able 2WD, 4WD and 4WD Lock controls, CVT transmission and an array of standard equipment – is $22,998.

Auto News

As a unique hybrid race car, the Toyota TS030 got the adrenaline flowing for visitors to the Toyota booth at this year’s Montreal International Auto Show.

The vehicle features special hybrid powertrain technology that led to a landmark achievement in 2014. Toyota became the first Japanese manufacturer to win the prestigious FIA World Endurance Championship, an annual competition that began in 1953.The TS030’s powertrain delivers an invigorating jolt of ex-citement to both the vehicle and its driver. A powerful pet-rol engine is twinned with an innovative hybrid system that captures energy during braking – enough to lift a 2.5-tonne minivan more than 20 metres vertically. All that energy is converted into electricity, and when the driver accelerates out of a corner, a 300-horsepower boost is delivered automatically to the rear of the vehicle. When combined with the TSO30’s ultra-efficient aerodynamics, the result is not only superior performance, but also increased fuel efficiency. The best part of the TS030 is how its unique capabilities are being integrated directly into Toyota’s hybrid offerings for consumers.

“What we test on the race track we build for the road,” said Seiji Ichii, President and CEO, Toyota Canada Inc. “Toyota engineers test and study hybrid technology through the ve-hicle’s performance on the race track. They then apply the first-hand knowledge they gain – bringing award-winning engineering, performance and passion to all of Toyota’s hy-brids.”That includes the Prius c and Prius v, whose new 2015 edi-tions are also on display at the Montreal show. Attendees were able to see how the 2015 Prius c – Toyota’s most affordable urban-friendly hybrid – has a sporty new look featuring a restyled front and new exterior colors, as well as an upgraded cabin with refined materials. The new 2015 Prius v – Toyota’s “big Prius” – also has a new look, in-cluding revised front and rear styling, complete with new front bumper, grille, and headlights. Inside, new audio sys-tems bring new multimedia capabilities. The Prius c and Prius v, along with the TS030 and many other exciting Toyota vehicles – including the stunning FT-1 con-cept car making its Canadian debut – were seen at the show that ran from January 16-25.

Rebirth of an icon Next Generation Acura NSX Unveiled Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX supercar, Acura

revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor—the next-genera-tion Acura NSX, developed and produced in the U.S.—to the world’s auto media at the

2015 North American Internation- a l Auto Show. The production mod-el, in a scintillating NSX Red finish, took the stage with a growl from its twin-tur-bocharged engine. Specifically cre-ated to bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, the NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars — much as the first genera-tion did a quarter century ago. The approach is realized through an all-new power unit—a twin-tur-bocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmis-sion (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with world’s-first ma-terial applications and manufacturing processes. Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exception-ally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs. As the pinnacle representation of Acura performance and prestige, the NSX was introduced at the auto show under the theme of “Precision Crafted Performance.” The theme was the original tagline for the Acura brand, a guiding force behind the develop-ment of the original NSX and a critical component of its launch. The development of next-generation NSX, driven by precision crafted performance, has resulted in a clean-sheet design, which involved nearly three years of intensive develop-ment effort by a global design and engineering team led by engineers at the company’s de-velopment center in Raymond, Ohio. The NSX features an “Advanced Sports Package” with placement of key powertrain components –the mid-mounted engine, twin front motors and Sport Hybrid battery pack and power control unit – optimized to concentrate vehicle

mass low and toward the center of the vehicle, to further enhance dynamic response. The combination of this packaging concept and the lightweight body give the NSX the lowest center of gravity in its class. The NSX utilizes a fully independent, all-aluminum front and rear suspension and puts its considerable power down through ContiSport Contact™ high-performance tires—245/35Z R19 front and 295/30Z R20 rear—mounted on 19x8.5 inch front and 20x11 inch rear alumi-

num alloy wheels. Powerful, natural and confident braking performance is provided by 6-piston front and 4-piston rear Monobloc calipers squeezing ultra-high performance

carbon-ceramic brake discs. Handling is greatly enhanced by Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All Wheel Drive

(Sport Hybrid SH-AWD), enabling lightning-quick response to all driver in-puts—steering, braking and throttle—along with the stability, control and launch performance of all-wheel drive. Agile Handling Assist (AHA) uses the subtle application of brake torque to further enhance yaw response and

dynamic stability. The NSX’s dial-operated Integrated Dynamic System features Quiet, Sport,

Sport+ and Track modes. The system adjusts engine, motor, transmission

and chassis response, as well as the engine sound level, based

on the needs of the driver and driving environ-

ment. Quiet mode enables electric-

only driving at lower speeds for short dura-

tions. Dynamic vehicle responses

become increasingly sharp as the driver moves

from Sport to Sport+ mode and, finally, to Track mode,

where the NSX reveals the full spectrum of its performance capabil-

ities. The NSX also features a “launch” function to achieve the ultimate in “zero delay” launch performance, aided by both the engine and three electric motors. The NSX will be manufactured exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, where approximately 100 highly-skilled associates will conduct full body construction, paint, and final assembly using domestic and globally-sourced parts

Nissan Teams Up with NASA

to Develop Next Generation of

Autonomous Vehicles Nissan Motor Co., through its North American-based organization, and NASA an-

nounced the formation of a five-year research and development partnership to advance autonomous vehicle systems and prepare for commercial application of

the technology.Researchers from Nissan’s U.S. Silicon Valley Research Center and NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., will focus on autonomous drive systems, human-machine interface solutions, network-enabled applications, and software analysis and verification, all involving sophisticated hardware and software used in road and space applications.Researchers from the two organizations will test a fleet of zero-emission autonomous vehicles at Ames to demonstrate proof-of-concept remote operation of autonomous ve-hicles for the transport of materials, goods, payloads and people. For NASA, these tests parallel the way it operates planetary rovers from a mission control center. The first vehicle of that fleet should be testing at the facility by the end of 2015.“The work of NASA and Nissan – with one directed to space and the other directed to earth, is connected by similar challenges,” said Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nis-san Motor Co. “The partnership will accelerate Nissan’s development of safe, secure and reliable autonomous drive technology that we will progressively introduce to consumers beginning in 2016 up to 2020.”Nissan has set 2020 as the timeframe for the introduction of autonomous drive vehicles that have the ability to navigate in nearly all situations, including the most complex situ-ation, city driving.“This partnership brings together the best and brightest of NASA and Nissan and vali-dates our investments in Silicon Valley,” said Ghosn

The all-new, 2015 Lexus RC F adopts the best of the tuning and tech-nology that went into the Lexus LFA Supercar to create an authentic

high-performance coupe. Fully capable of running on a racing circuit, the Lexus RC F is for those ready to immerse them in pure driving plea-sure. And with two models – both generously equipped and priced be-low $90K – this exceptional coupe is ready to put a smile on the faces of all who drive it – on the road or on the track.“The RC F is the second “F Series” model from Lexus – inspired by Fuji Speedway in Japan, where most of our high-speed development takes place,” noted Cyril Dimitris, Director of Lexus Canada. “As such, this luxury coupe offers a fresh inter-pretation of the essential characteristics of Lexus F Series design: The RC F conveys a feeling of limitless power and incredible responsiveness, with an emotional – even visceral – sound experience to match.”From first sight, it’s clear the RC F is en-gineered to be a performance machine – with a low, wide and long body with deep, sweeping lines, riding on massive tires mounted on exclusive 19” forged aluminum wheels. Cooling ducts and outlets express the RC F’s dynamism while performing essential cool-ing and aerodynamic functions. At the rear, a four-link active rear wing maximizes aerodynamic performance at higher speeds. Inside, the cabin complements the RC F’s aggressive exterior styling with a driver-focused cockpit-like design that emphasizes ergonomics and driving dynamics. The RC F is fitted with several components unique to the model – including the meters, steering wheel, seats, or-namentation and pedals.

The hood is raised to accommodate and emphasize the RC F’s 5.0L V8 engine. Generating up to 467 horsepower, this is the most powerful V8 in the Lexus lineup – capable of delivering instanta-neous torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed Sports Di-rect Shift transmission – uniquely tuned to deliver a more linear response to accelerator pedal operation. Meanwhile, the RC F’s suspension, braking, steering and other dynamics systems were

engineered to deliver optimum grip and handling agility. For its introductory year, Lexus offers the 2015 RC F in two models:

2015 Lexus RC F (Starting MSRP: $80,800) offering many features designed to deliver track-worthy performance and handling for a

thrilling experience behind the wheel, coupled with aggressive, sporty styling. Performance features include: A uniquely tuned sport suspension;

Take the North Shore for example; it is a prime location, but is a very tough market to sell vehicles in.” He continues, “We have locals who have vacation ski properties in place such as Whistler and other resorts so there is demand for upmarket SUVs here, like all customers, buyers are looking for good deals.’ However Desai stresses, “Customer service and how people feel they are actually treated matters even more in this market. It is not only about the vehicles - which have to be as good as the competition.” Desai agrees that General Motors vehicle have improved so much in recent year the difference between them and much higher – priced imported vehicles is no longer an issue,

He says, “Many upmarket buyers are choosing our premium Cadillac and Buick SUVs in particular. And if you look at the newest Chevrolet and GMC’s, the quality is right up there with best of the competition.” Desai talks a little more about how his dealership in North Vancouver is different.“Our number one asset is the staff we have here. Most of the sales parts and service staff have been here a long time and even when I moved here I brought along people from the Port Coquitlam dealership. I have people with me for the last 16 – 17 years…that is pretty rare in the auto sales business.” Desai muses, “In an industry with by tradition a high turnover of sales staff you will find our staff retention rate is very high. This is very important for the customers, because you have sales and service people with a lot of experience and knowl-edge. It all comes down to how we think of ourselves - as a family. If the staff is happy and feels secure in a great work at-mosphere you can see that it translates into the work ethic and generates more business which is good for every member of staff and their dependents.” Sunil stresses, - “Car sales is not an easy environment and so

we have to stay at the top in this location - that means as well as good vehicles, GM invests in training and providing prod-uct knowledge so our team can provide the customer with the best possible experience of buying a new or used vehicle. We strive to operate an environment that fosters teamwork and professional development among our associates. We want our staff to grow with company and have fruitful long-term ca-reers and opportunities. You can only do that if the company itself has strong core values. “ Sunil says his dealership abide by a code and mission state-ment.“We instill in our associates that all our customers are treated with courtesy and Integrity and that we conduct ourselves in a responsible, professional and ethical manner – that’s a number one priority.” It has always been the Carter Auto Family philosophy to deal with every customer individually and to remember that every vehicle is sold one at a time. We focus on customer service and we want every customer to come back to us time and time again for all of their automotive needs. It is our philosophy to treat each customer the way we would

want to be treated ourselves.” Desai is forthright in the philosophy. “Ultimately we think pays off because we do have a lot of repeat business and referrals that result in sales and that only comes if you treat the custom-er right the first time. You don’t get a second chance.” Sunil has a committed clientele that he has severed for de-cades. His clientele continues to return and purchase vehicles from him and his staff, year after year. This is one of many ex-amples of how Sunil has developed a strong relationship with others within our community. The gleaming dealership boasts a high tech glass walled ser-vice and after sales area, Desai says this is also an important part of their business.“All our service and shop staff is GM certified and undergoes constant training and retraining as needed in new car technol-ogy, service and repair courses. For example, our maintenance and auto repair shops are equipped with the latest technologies available, and we carry the full line of GM Certified accessories, specially engineered to fit your GM Vehicle. When you drive off our lot in a new vehicle. our care and atten-

tion to details does not stop there, but carries on.” The dealership also has a website and various online tools that allow customers to browse and find out more on inventory and resources. “Customers can come into Carter GM North Shore in person and see for themselves the complete line up of new 2015 Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick models, cars, SUVS, pickup trucks and CUVs.”Desai finishes by saying, “As well as new, we also have a large used car selection if you are in the market for a pre-owned vehicle and our knowledgeable and friendly staff look forward to seeing you. ‘You won’t be disappointed.”

With all the fanfare about the new Acura TLX it is easy to overlook the 2016 Acura ILX sedan. The compact mid-size sports orientated ride now has a few nips and tucks now and arrives ready for battle in the compact entry level sports luxury class.

The new look includes revamped front and rear end fascia treatments, including new head-lights, comprising of Acura’s new beautiful looking signature “Jewel Eye” LED headlights. In addition there are new 17-inch alloy wheels to complete the refresh. New interior treatments include contrast stitching on the steering wheel and shift knob, and silver trim accents. Also added to the mix is enhanced connectivity, and a new host of premium features and tech-nologies, a quieter cabin sportier handling and collision avoidance and safety systems. In Canada, the Acura ILX range starts at $27,990 for the well-equipped base entry levels with the auto transmission and tops out at $35,290 for the Hybrid model. The 2016 Acura ILX is powered via a new 201-horsepower, directed-injected i-VTEC engine. This unit offers 6,800 rpm and 180 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm. The new engine is mated to an 8-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) with torque converter and paddle-controlled Se-

quential Sport Shift. Note; this is the same engine and transmission combination that pow-ers the new TLX. Stick shift performance fans will be happy to know the Acura ILX Dynamic model offers a sweet, six- speed manual transmission as standard. The 2016 ILX will be available in four grades – ILX, ILX with Premium Package, ILX with Tech-nology Package, and ILX Dynamic. All ILX models arrive with features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, and enhanced Col-lision Mitigation Braking System™ with pedestrian-sensing capability. Our tester was the Acura ILX Dynamic model with the six- speed manual transmission as mentioned priced at $32,950 plus $1995 freight and PDI. Also note; the Dynamic model is the only version of the ILX to include the manual transmission, and is not available on any other trim level of the ILX. On the road, the Slick-shifting Manual Transmission is such a great addition to the ILX and makes the nimble, athletic ILX even more fun to drive. With its delightfully light clutch, and short, smooth and super precise shifts- the ILX can be driven fast and hard, and yet never

Full disclosure here – I actually owned an all- black 1981 Porsche 911 Targa in the UK many moons ago for short period. It was a lovely car and intoxicating to drive until

the engine died and it ended up on blocks in my driveway. Motto - Never buy a car from an ex-race car driver!Having this in mind it was a pleasure to recently test-drive the new 2015 Porsche 911 Targa. For the unenlightened, the Targa is semi-convertible featuring a fixed rear roll hoop with a removable center roof panel. The one in my old 81’ Targa was a pain to undo manually and store, but the rush of open-air motoring was well worth it.No such drama in the new 2015 version which features a fully electric system that uses a complex – but fascinating to watch process that raises the entire rear hatch, balances it near-vertically over the 911’s hindquarters, and then folds the cloth top into a storage cubby just ahead of the rear-mounted engine.

The new 911 Targa homage looks wonderful and the rear up-per Targa roof and pillar pays a thoroughly modern tribute to the original with its aluminum finish, three gills and Targa script. It looks great in profile and equally good with roof sec-tion up or down. The 911 Targa arrives in Canada as a torque-vectoring equipped All-Wheel Drive model with a 350 horsepower, 3.4-litre boxer engine. A more powerful Targa 400-hp, 3.8L 4S is also available. Transmission is either a Seven-Speed Dual Clutch manual or a 7 speed PDK automatic unit with paddle shifters. The Targa 4S has a 0 to 60 time of 4.4 seconds, a full three tenths slower than the Carrera 4S Cabriolet and five tenths behind the Carrera 4S coupe.Due to the electric powered roofs motors and mechanics, the Targa has a 100 pounds weight penalty so making the car a tad slower than the fixed roof coupe. The roof itself is ac-tivated by pressing a button. The entire lowering and raising

process takes roughly 19 seconds and requires the vehicle to be at a standstill. You can’t execute this on the move. The all-red interior in the 911 we tested was indeed a work of art with its faultless execution, perfect ergonomics; sports orientated dash and excellent finish. It is all lovely leather and superb high quality plastics and metal trim. Equipment levels are excellent with full power features, electrically ad-justable power seats, parking sensors, cruise control, satellite radio, Bluetooth and navigation. I recently saw a documen-tary on the production process at Porsche and it is incredible to believe that the fastidious build and execution of the inte-rior is mostly-hand done. On the road, the wonderful soundtrack 911’s flat six is in-toxicating. At highway speeds with the top down, the Targa occupants will experience some buffeting; however cowl shake, the bane of soft tops is imperceptible — even over bumpy roads, The 911 chassis as ever remains firm and won-

loses its composure. There are no rough edges in this car. Handling is also good with spirited assertive driving rewarded with crisp, taut cornering and enjoyable up and down shifting through the manual gearshift. The gearing for the transmission and engine mapping is spot on and it’s hard to stall or mistime a shift in the well matched combo. In my opinion Honda matches BMW for the ef-

fortless, butter smooth manual transmission shifters.Interior wise, our tester was very equipped with all the features and amenities you would expect for this price. It is all there – comfortable classy leather seat and trim, navigation system, high-end surround-sound system, entertainment technology and all the creature comforts you could want. It’s all very nice and the dashboard layout is logical and the functions are where you would want them to be. Despite the compact dimensions, the Acura ILX offers roomy well- proportioned cabin with enough room to seat four adults in total comfort. The Acura ILX may not have a thirsty V6, but its makes sense with its sporty per-formance, willing engine, attractive looks and high spec. With its new features

and upgrades, the ILX is a formidable entry in this sector. Another major attraction is the six- speed manual transmission on the Dynamic model which is well worth money in my opinion. Well worth considering for sports sedan fans.2016 Acura ILX Dynamic six speed manual Priced from $32, 950 plus PDI and freight.

derfully communicative. The ride is also well damped as the Targa arrives with a slightly more forgiving softer suspen-sion set up than the 911 Coupe to help minimize impacts nd stress to the Targa’s body shell. Note that the extra weight of the Targa 4S does make itself known with slightly slower cornering than the Coupe and in straight line acceleration (5.2 seconds). Still, there is nothing to be sniffed at here performance wise, and if you need more thrills, the Targa 4S with its 400 horsepower, 3.8-litre engine is the one to get for slightly faster motoring with a 0- 100 km/h in less than 5.2 seconds for the manual transmission version. The new 911 Targa is a brilliant new twist on the iconic and venerable grand master of all sport cars and well worth the money it commands. The Targa’s classic design has proven to be a real winner for Porsche in further distinguishing the 911’s familiar shape from other variants of the vehicle. The best looking edition of the 911 by far. It is not cheap, so raid the RRSP and be a devil! Superb in every way.

upholstery, metal trim and firm- yet comfortable Sport bucket seats and the option of upgraded performance seats. Trim options include a shiny rich looking wood finish, carbon fibre, gloss black and a cool “oil rubbed” bronze trim.Highlights include such high tech amenities as Bluetooth, Bose audio, climate control, and full power and luxury and convenience options can be added as one requires in differ-ent packages that include a navigation system, full-leather interior and expanded media connectivity including SD, USB, and Bluetooth audio streaming. The CUE system, (Cadil-lac User Experience) uses a very cool capacitive touch and haptic feedback feature to activate heated seats, audio, climate, phone and navigation, etc. This is an option to the conventional navigation systemOn the upgraded Luxury package, buyers have 10-way power front seats with memory; a rearview camera; front and rear parking sensors; a fold-down rear seat and polished 17-inch wheels. The top tier option pack level is the Performance Package which adds: adaptive HID headlamps; aluminum sport pedals; front sport seats with power-adjustable bolsters and thigh supports; and on automatic-equipped cars, paddle shift controls. The Performance model also includes the Driver Awareness Package and a Driver Assist Package with blind-spot monitors; adaptive cruise control with front and rear automatic braking; and a head-up display that can be reconfigured to the driver’s taste.Other options include a Driver Awareness Package with a lane departure warning system, for-ward collision alerts, rear side airbags, rain-sensing wipers, and a haptic safety seat that vibrates the driver side bottom seat cushion when the car crosses out of its lane, a navigation system; a sunroof; and a cold-weather package. Premium options include the Driver Assist Package, a cold-weather package, and a sunroof. The ATS cabin is spacious and inviting and allows for decent enough headroom, shoulder room and legroom in both front and rear. The rear seats also fold 60/40 and include a pass-through for longer item to access the trunk.

On the road it is very easy to understand why the ATS is an award winner with its balanced han-dling, fast acceleration and defined braking. With its capable All-Wheel Drive capabilities, multi-link suspension, front MacPherson struts and 50/50 front -rear weight distribution – the ATS is an excellent performance driver’s car. Drivers have choice of three drive modes - Touring, Sport and Snow/Ice modes which control traction and suspension settings on varied terrains. The big effective ABS brakes are very powerful and can be upgraded to Brembo high performance up front in an option package. To sum up, the 2015 Cadillac ATS is formidable competition to such rival as the BMW -3 Series, the Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class and is one to consider in that segment. With its high technology level, equipment levels and performance ability. The optional engines, All-Wheel Drive option, transmissions and choice of trim lines also give it the edge in this sector. I like the taut, stable handling and delightful fun-to drive nature of the ATS and its good safety scores in US safety tests. Anyone who takes a test drive will be hugely impressed. Well-recommended. 2015 Cadillac ATS Base Priced from $35,195 - $36,985
