T he tiny Fiat 500 is now a common sight in Vancouver streets since its introduction in 2011 and has been a smash hit for Fiat/Chrysler. The cute, funky two-door is re- nowned for its great styling, retro charm and spunky handling. 2014 Canadian Auto Sales Hit an All-Time Record of 1.85 Million UnitsThe month of December capped off a second straight re-

cord year for automotive sales in Canada with total units sold for the year eclipsing the 2013 record by 106,492 units

or 6.1%. Overall 1,849,604 units were sold in 2014, with Decem-ber also marking the 9th straight month for record auto sales in Canada with 131,393 units sold last month. December’s sales were up a staggering 16.2% over December 2013. Not surpris-ingly, December’s sales were also significantly higher than the 5 year average sales for the month up 21.5% or 23,242 units over the average for the month. With continued downward pressure on oil prices continuing through the end of the year, truck sales also continued to com-prise the majority of vehicle sales in December at 63.5% of total sales. Truck sales for the full year were 58.7% of total sales, com-pared to 56.1% of total sales for calendar year 2013.

Once again in 2014, the best-selling vehicle in Canada was the Ford F-150 pick-up truck, while the best-selling passenger car was the Honda Civic for the 17th straight year. Ford also took the sales crown for the year with 291,823 units sold, while Porsche was most-improved on a sales percentage growth basis, with 34% annual growth in sales compared to 2013.“Vehicle sales were unbelievably strong in 2014,” said David Adams, President of the Global Automakers of Canada, (GAC). “Consumer confidence also rebounded nicely in December for the first time since August, and when you combine that with low gas prices, and very attractive year-end manufacturers’ sales and financing, it is no wonder the year ended with a bang,” added Adams. For Global Automakers of Canada members, December sales of

67,908 were below the overall market increase of 16.2%. On the year, GAC member sales are up 5.5 % vis-à-vis an overall market increase of 6.1%. GAC members’ sales represented 51.7% of to-tal market sales in December and 55.1% for 2014. (Info data from “Global Automakers of Canada.”)

McLaren P1 - 903 Horsepower Hybrid Engined Supercar will challenge

Ferrari and Porsche

The new McLaren P1 is the new “It” supercar - power-ful, mind numbingly expensive, and—unavailable. That’s because all 375 examples of the $1,000,000

upwards, 903-hp gas/electric hybrid two seater have al-ready been pre-sold. The specification for the British built- totally handmade car is off the chart: It is powered by a 3.8-liter 727-hp twin-turbo V-8, combined with a 177-hp electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery pack, and a space shuttle mass of electronics and computers that help deliver performance and power at uniquely speeds.Meanwhile hydro-pneumatic suspension, electro-hydrau-lically assisted steering, and a rear aero wing spoiler that extends almost 12 inches when fully deployed add to the drama. In addition to the computer technology, the P1 offers a slew of fully customizable driver-selectable pro-grams (e-mode, normal, sport, track, and race), The P1’s Race mode not only offers incredible performance by lowering the P1 down two inches on the car’s hydro-pneu-matic suspension it raises the big rear aero wing spoiler up to 12 inches high for maximum downforce. The P1 has a, “miss it and blink” 0 - 60 mph of 2.7 seconds. Pricing for the P1 is expected to be over a million dollars US, However don’t even bother breaking into the piggy bank as all of the initial production runs of 375 P1’s have been sold now!

Honda Civic Celebrates 17 Years as Canada’s Best- Selling Passenger Car

With sales of 66,057 units in 2014, the Honda Civic outsold its closest competitor by more than 15,000 units to retain its position as Canada’s best-selling passenger car for the

17th consecutive year. This remarkable feat is a testament to the durability, quality and reliability that Canadians have come to ex-pect from Honda and the delicate balance of safety, fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive attributes that Civic delivers, year after year.“We truly value the trust that our customers put in us when they buy a Civic,” said Dave Gardner, vice president of sales and market-ing, Honda Canada Inc. “Nearly every Civic sold in Canada is built for Canadians, by Canadians, right here in our Ontario manufac-turing facility. Seventeen years is an accomplishment that the en-tire Honda family can be very proud of; from our over 4,000 associ-ates in Alliston, to our regional and national staff and thousands of associates at our 231 Honda dealers across the country.”Since 1973, more than 3.8 million Honda Civics have been manu-factured by Canadians at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, Ontar-io and more than 1.8 million Civics have been parked in driveways across the country over the years.

Ahead of the 2015 North American In-ternational Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Infiniti raises the curtain

on its vision of a premium sports coupe. The striking Q60 Concept is poised to entice coupe fans with its sharp contours and hand-crafted inte-rior, while at the same time sug-gesting performance and power to match. Result: a no-compromise fu-sion of looks and speed. The Q60 Con-cept sits low and wide in a road-hugging stance hinting at exceptional dynamics and driving pleasure. While the Q60 Concept is fresh and original, it evokes a sense of déjà vu at times with whiffs and traces of the Q80 Inspiration (shown this past October at the Paris Motor Show) evident in its finest details. The audaciously low roofline and quilted leather seats remind one of the elegant full-size Q80 Inspiration, while the aerodynamic gills behind the front wheel arches are inherited from the Q50 Eau Rouge sports sedan concept.“The Q80 Inspiration was an indication of Infiniti’s future design language,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. “The Q60 Concept is the next step in the journey.

“The sweeping lines of the Q80 Inspiration gave the Q60 Concept its coupe silhouette and looks while the Formula One-inspired touches from the Q50 Eau Rouge endowed the coupe with its

sports personality.”The visual excitement in the edgy

lines of the concept is set off by the custom 21-inch wheels which take

up the entire wheel arch. Inspired by jet turbine blades, the black spokes in a combina-

tion of mattes and chromes stretch to the edge of the wheel, further emphasizing how “planted” the coupe

is.The high-quality ambience inside speaks of Infiniti’s meticulous attention

to detail, clearly evident from the impeccable hand-stitched leather to the precise treatment of the carbon fibre accents.Infiniti designers use a variety of leathers on the seats to provide just the perfect balance of com-fort and support as befits a premium sports coupe. They also make the Q60 Concept a genuine “2+2” coupe by giving rear passengers more legroom through the use of genuine sport seats. As a foreshadowing of the next generation of Infiniti’s premium sports coupe, the Q60 Concept makes use of taut lines and sports car cues to convey exceptional stance and presence.

includes a top rating of GOOD in five IIHS crash test modes including a GOOD score in the Insurance Institute’s stringent small overlap frontal crash test. The 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation is awarded to vehicles that also have an available front crash preven-tion system that earns a superior or advanced rating from the Institute. The 2015 CR-V offers an available frontal crash prevention system that earns a top rating of superior.“Honda’s vision to one day eliminate traffic-related collisions, injuries and fatalities is at the heart of our commitment to safety,” said Dave Gardner, vice president of Sales and Marketing at Honda Canada. “Our continued innovation in active safety and assistive technologies with the application of Honda Sensing brings Honda, our customers and everyone else on the road one step closer to this goal.”The 2015 CR-V with Honda Sensing™ is on the leading-edge of this initiative. New for 2015 is Cadillac’s all-new 2014 ELR Coupe. Originally unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year - the beautiful new coupe is now about to

be produced. The Cadillac ELR uses GM’s Voltec electric propulsion tech-nology, as used on the Chevrolet Volt hybrid sedan. On the outside however it is nothing like the Volt with only two doors and a sleeker, edgy appearance. Sleek lines and gorgeous LED lights highlight a dramatic side and front pro-file and there is no mistaking the ELR is a Cadillac with its blend of art and science technology. Sleek, taut bodylines warp dramatically around big twenty-inch wheels and tires. The ELR is powered by GM’s Voltec powertrain technology, comprising of a 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack sending power to a 154 kW (207 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque) primary drive motor motivating the front wheels. Also present is a 1.4-litre gasoline engine rated at 84 horse-power driving an electric generator. The interior cabin also lives up to the exterior with, premi-um grade leather and suede microfiber upholstery. Bright chrome, real wood and tasteful carbon-fibre detail accents

offered in a series of trim lines. Some instrumentation and design cues from the Cadillac CTS are also present and there is fully comprehensive instru-mentation for the hybrid drive system status with a full-color multifunction display. Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system with navigation and is really cool capacitive touch and haptic feedback flat-panel display is also present and takes a little time to learn, but operates very well. Unlike the CTS however, the ELR is more of a 2+2 seater with ample room for the driver and front passenger occupant in the leg, shoulder and headroom department and much smaller tiny kid sized rear seats that lack headroom.Chassis wise, the ELR offers a tuned suspension system with continuously variable real-time damping with several driv-er-selectable modes. Up front GM’s HiPer Strut set up works with a Watts linkage in the rear. The steering is electrically assisted rack-and-pinion, with speed sensitive assist. On the road, Cadillac, the ELR will deliver an electric vehicle (EV) range of about 45-50 kilometers. Combined estimated range is a very impressive 550 km and

Cadillac estimates fuel economy at 7.1 L/100 km combined, and 2.9 L/100 km in EV mode. ELR owners will be able to charge the vehicles battery using either an onboard 120-volt travel charger in about 15 hours, while plugging into a 240-volt charging station will do reduce the battery charg-ing time to about five hours. On the road performance is enhanced by the ELR adjustable driving modes that offers four different driving settings: Tour, Sport, Mountain and Hold. Tour mode is the default mode and is calibrated for the most drivetrain efficiency and comfort. Sport mode tightens up throttle responses, steering and suspension parameters. s. Mountain mode is designed for hilly driving situations. The Hold mode offers more EV mode. The ELR also offers a “Regen on Demand” feature, that allows for more power to be used and sent to the battery from the regenerative braking system. The 2015 Cadillac ELR looks like a very attractive hybrid performance coupe offering superb looks, a premium cabin and excellent value. One to test-drive for sure.

2016 New Jaguar XE

Jaguar has confirmed details of the brand’s all-new compact sport sedan, the Jaguar XE which will launch globally in 2015 and comes to the United States in

2016. The Jaguar XE will be the first product built on the new advanced aluminum architecture which was show-cased in the C-X17 concept car in 2013. This aluminum intensive structure provides the benefits of lightness and strength for exceptional handling, performance, refine-ment and efficiency.Power will be provided by a variety of engines with a wide range of capacities and output, all delivering inspi-rational performance and offering the latest innovations in fuel-efficient technologies. The new Ingenium engine line will also offer a flexible engine architecture that can be configured to suit in-line and transverse installations and can be used in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel

drive configurations.Speaking at the Geneva Auto Show, Dr. Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, confirmed: “We announced just a few weeks ago that our new Engine Manufacturing Center would produce a new family of premium, lightweight, low-friction, low emission four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units. The first of our Inge-nium engine range will be used in our all-new compact Jaguar sports sedan. That car will be called the Jaguar XE, and it will be unveiled in production form later this year.”Ian Callum, Director of Design, said: “The new Jaguar XE is every bit a modern Jaguar car; more compact in size but visually striking. Customers will expect a great deal from a compact Jaguar car – it must be practical but pre-mium. We never forget we are designing a Jaguar car and that means it must be as exciting to look at and drive as

it is brilliant to run and practical to own. We believe we’ve done just that with the Jaguar XE.”“The all-new Jaguar XE compact sport sedan will bring Jaguar into the largest segment of the luxury car market with a dynamic new entry that will challenge the sta-tus quo of luxury car brands,” said Jeff Curry, Brand Vice President of Jaguar North America. “Jaguar is charting an exciting new path with the recent launch of the Jag-uar F-TYPE and the introduction of the Jaguar XE, which completes our sedan line-up. We offer a more exclusive, distinct choice in the luxury car marketplace combining progressive British design, a high performance character and advanced aluminum technology.”The name of the Jaguar XE follows the brand’s sedan pro-gression, positioned alongside the XF and XJ sedans in the range.

You may well have heard the phrase “defensive driving,” and often wondered what it ex-actly is. Well, Defensive driving is defined as “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.”

While every situation is different and will require its own specific course of action, there are 4 very basic defensive driving tips that should always be followed while behind the wheel. If you discipline yourself to practise defensive driving every time you get behind the wheel, you can’t help but to be a very safe driver and you will greatly reduce the chances of an accident. The key here is self-discipline. Anytime you violate these 4 basic rules, you are putting yourself and everyone else around you at risk, not to mention adding additional wear and tear to your vehicle. These 5 defensive driving tips are essential to becoming a safe driver.

1. Look Far AheadJust how far ahead should you look when driving? As far as you can! Most accidents could be avoided if people would have better situational awareness and planned ahead by looking as far down the road as possible. Driving experts call this technique as “aiming high in steering.” What they mean, is, don’t make your steering adjustments based on what is directly in front of you. Instead, look way down the road for possible problems.

2. Getting the Big PictureWhat Does “Getting the Big Picture” Really Mean? The ultimate goal in driving is to never be

caught off guard or surprised by something. Know where each end every vehicle is around you and spot all hazards early and often by getting the “Big Picture.” By looking far enough ahead, allowing yourself an adequate following distance (at least 3 seconds in good weather on dry pavement), and keeping your eyes moving, you will greatly reduce the chances of be-ing surprised about a traffic hazard.

3. Maintaining Proper Following DistanceKeeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you is the most commonly broken de-fensive driving tips despite, being the easiest tip to follow. A safe following distance is just as important, if not more important, than keeping a safe speed. After all, you could be going 100 kph, but as long as there is enough space between you and other vehicles, you’ll never hit anyone.

4. Reducing Driving DistractionsLet’s not forget how many people eat and drive at the same time, text and drive, or even get distracted by passengers in the vehicle. A life can be lost simply because somebody takes their eyes off the road for “just a second,” texting, or fiddling with a gadget so try to avoid all distraction and keep your eyes on the road. Defensive driving can take some time to get used to. Breaking old habits can be hard. But after a while, it becomes second nature. And you don’t even have to think about it.

Tip Of The Week

Defensive Driving will keep you safe in our congested and busy roads

For 2015: the new Chevrolet Silverado line of pickup trucks offers a variety of configurations for all customers tastes and requirements. Whether you tow or haul for work or pleasure, the Silverado has always been a fine choice. Need a basic work truck or a loaded family pickup? The Silverado 1500 line offers both V6 and V8 engined two and four-door models. If heavy duty construction, or high load towing is more what you do, the bigger, more powerful Silverado 2500 Heavy duty trucks with mighty V8’s, and the optional Duramax Diesel engines with stronger transmission and rear axles might be more to your liking. The Silverado comes with a range of the latest six- and eight-cylinder engines, namely: A 4.3L V6, or one of two V8s, either a 5.3L or 6.2L. All of these engine options use cylinder deacti-vation, direct injection, variable-valve timing, and other tech-nology to be more fuel efficient. All power plants arrive with a 6-speed automatic transmission.Three different cargo-bed lengths are offered on the Silvera-do: 5’8”, 6’6”, and 8’’ bed sizes. Our Crew Cab model came with

the 6’6” cargo box. GM has improved the pickup box design somewhat, adding a CornerStep bumper plus hand-grip pockets, both of which make climbing up to access cargo eas-ier. Other good ideas are a lighter tailgate that is now rotary damped and easier on the arms and fingers to lift and fold down, and LED lights tucked under the bed rails. The interior is smart and comfortable and Chevrolet have wisely resisted the temptation to make it too car like in the dash and trim. It a macho truck, even on the inside with a row of professional looking gauges, in the dash and big chunky controls and knob that you can use even with your gloves on. As this is a work truck, there is a lot of useful storage with an optional front centre console with combined compartments, and multiple sockets for laptops, phone chargers and what have you.Seats are big and comfortable with plenty leg, shoulder and headroom as you would expect in a truck of this size. The comfortable cabin is wide and spacious and very nicely fin-ished with our testers optional heated and cooled leather

seats. From the driver’s seat, though, you’ll need to be care-ful parking in tight, urban parking lots as the new Silverado’s high hood and big read cabin make visibility an issue; how-ever the handy rear camera assist is a godsend!Safety is excellent too with a blitz of impressive standard equipment helps such as StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Con-trol, Hill Start Assist, as well as head-curtain side airbags with rollover protection, and an available Lane Departure Warning system keeps the driver alert of lane drifts via a chime or the optional (vibrating) Safety Alert Seat. In addition, bigger spot mirrors help with visibility in blind spots, while other safety features on offer include a camera-based Forward Collision Alert system. Front and rear park assist, and a rear tailgate camera. This new, award winning Silverado also look good to boot with lashings of chrome. Looks aside this huge beast will get the job done whatever you choose to do!2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew cab pickup priced from $43,105.

The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is a new name for the previous Infiniti JX, a sleek, three-row crossover utility vehicle based on the Nissan Pathfinder. Available as a V6 pow-

ered CUV, with a 265-horsepower 3.5L V6 mated to a CVT transmission, we tested the new QX60 Hybrid version with a 230-hp 2.5L supercharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 15-kW electric drive motor to produce a total of 250 hp, via a CVT transmission. Note; the Canadian QX60 Hybrids all come equipped with AWD as standard equipment. The 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid comes well-equipped at a base price of $48,950. Standard equipment is luxurious and gen-erous with: Intelligent all-wheel drive, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with heated power-ad-justable front seats, power moon roof, intelligent key with push-button start, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-inch colour display with rear-view monitor, automatic HID headlights, cruise control, high spec audio system, power tailgate and rear privacy glass.Inside, the QX60 Hybrid cabin looks suitably luxurious and well designed with sharp leather seats and nice textures, ma-terials and tight fitting panels. Soft-touch materials abound for driver and passengers and the overall ambience is very good. It is not only a good looking cabin, it is also versatile with full sliding second-row seats that feature a steep tipping point to allow easier access to the third row. The passenger’s side of the second row splits 60/40 and the third row seat is surprisingly roomy. With the seats folded there’s up to 2,166 L of available cargo space compared to 447 L of cargo space when all seats are upright. Nothing much to gripe about, al-though a few switches seem positioned a little low to reach on the left of the steering wheel. On the road, the QX60 Hybrid feels adequately powered, de-livering city fuel economy that’s about 30 percent better than the conventional AWD QX60 and 28 percent better than the conventional front-wheel drive QX60. The official city/high-way numbers are 7.6 / 6.9 L/100 km for the Hybrid, 10.9 / 7.8 for the V6 AWD, and 10.5 / 7.6 for the V6 FWD.The QX60, the Hybrid has a four-position driving mode se-lector with Sport, Standard, Eco, and Snow modes. In sport mode the CVT shifts through programmed ‘virtual gears’ for a more sporty experience whilst in Eco mode the transmission and throttle parameters are changed for fuel efficiency with the transmission keeping revs down. Standard mode is the best compromise in my opinion. The QX60′s ride is composed and comfortable, with decent enough feel, although it errs a bit on the soft side for what would be considered sporty. Braking are pretty good for this hefty 2,098 kg CUV and the regenerative brakes don’t act like typical hybrid brakes that tend to feel like they ‘drag’ when

Other standout features include a flatload floor a wide square tailgate opening that allows for easy loadingand unloading. On the road, the tall high cabin andupright windshield mean driving visibility is excellent and good sightlines mean parking and urbandriving is easy. The addition of twoextra gears that makes a real difference when driving the manualengine car delivering much better low- and mid-range performance amuch quieter ride and much betterfuel economy a test average of 8.1litres per 100 kilometres in the currentmodel compared to the 8.7 L/100 km

Opt for the automatic equipped transmission and you gain a driver selectable “Eco” feature that, at thepress of a switch, electronically recalibrates the automatic transmission by remapping the throttle and alters the transmission'sshift pattern to provide better economy. and increases fuel economy. There is a little trade off in decreasedperformance however.Other technical improvements meanride quality is also improved with asofter, more compliant ride. With its high level of standardequipment and safety comprising sixairbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability. To sum up I really like the Kia Soul

with its left field styling, a roomy interior and seating for five with goodfunctionality. It is fun to drive and attracts many admiring glances. Most impressive is the level of standard equipment, the well-equipped optional trim lines andpaint, wheel and roof choices. Add tothat a seriously amazing and temptinglist price and you have to consider it iflooking uber-cool family vehicle withplenty of heritage charm.

applied. Straight line acceleration is excellent and although the big QX needs care in negotiating tight urban parking areas, it is super easy to park thanks to Infiniti’s clever around view monitor. Technologically ad-vanced and very safe.

2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid base priced from $48,950. Price as tested – including freight and PDE, $64,945.

The rear bench seat in the 500L now seats three adults in the back with decent enough head- and leg-room. The 60/40 folding rear seats also tilt, tumble and slide for extra com-fort and versatility. Also of note, cargo space is much improved over the 500 with a very useful 605 litres of space. Keeping families in mind, a dual-layer rear cargo shelf effectively dou-bles the amount of luggage space. On the road, the 500L’s 1.4L “Multi-Air” turbo engines 160 horsepower and 184 lb/ft of torque drives well enough. The 6-speed dual-clutch automatic is a smooth trans-mission although a tad slower to switch gears. The six speed manual or the conventional automatic that will be offered soon might be a better choice if more response is what you really. However acceleration is brisk. The 500L is also; being of European heritage and where fuel is very expensive is quite fuel-efficient – rated at 8.7 litres/100 km in the city and 6.0 on the highway. The on-road ride is good with a firm, yet comfortable manner. Brakes are strong as they should be on a family hauler and the 500L is a relaxed, easy and reassuring to drive vehicle thanks to the smooth engine, responsive transmission and supple ride. There is really nothing to complain about I think. Option do jack the price up considerably, but even the base model comes well equipped, so think carefully if you need the big buck luxury op-tions - although your kids and spouse may love you for them on those long road trips! The Fiat 500L is mighty impressive and will be a big favorite with Canadian families. If you are looking for a good-looking retro inspired family vehicle with plenty of heritage charm you can’t do any better.

2015 Fiat 500L priced from $19,999 - $25,995 plus options, freight and PDI.
