What is Art Nouveau?

Art nouveau was a design movement that emerged and touched all of design arts – architecture, furniture, fashion, graphic and product design during the 1890s and early 20th century. It was the first style of commercial art used consistently to enhance the beauty of industrial products. Art Nouveau was also true international style embraced by all the Europe as well as America.

Influences

The look of Art Nouveau was inspired by Asian Art which arrived in Europe as a result of increase trade between Europe and Asia.

In the late 1800s Europe had fascination with anything Japanese. Artifacts and art from Japan streamed in Europe in large quantities and influenced many artists.

InfluencesAnother source of inspiration for Art Nouveau came from painters like Vincent Van Gogh and his swirling forms.

Influences

Jules Cheret plays an important role as “a father of the modern poster”Trained as a lithographer he invented over-size posters.Most of his posters were life-size, printed on 2 pieces of paper.

As art become simplified, the shapes become more abstract.Simplified illustration with alost all the detail removed.

Art nouveau artists flavored this simpler drawing style, usually outlined black and filled with flat colors.
