ART NOUVEAU_____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

1890 - 1914

- Starting in the turn of the 20th century Art Nouveau was the first conscious attempt to develop a non-historical style of art and architecture

- Considered the ‘anti-movement’ of historical style, Art Nouveau flourished in France and Belgium but never succeeded as a permanent style in design

- Designers associated with the movement are Gaillard, Van de Velde, Gaudi, Mackintosh and Tiffany

- It emcompassed architecture, decorative arts, graphic design, painting, sculpture and is characterised by various stylistic features which vary according to region

20th Century Furniture - ART DECO _____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

1910 - 1939

-The restrained, understated features of the style that came to be known as Art Deco caught the public imagination in 1925

-Art Deco was a celebration of the machine age

- The name derives from the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925, which promoted a sumptuous, low-slung look in Interior Design, characterised by:

-Gleaming veneer

-Exotic materials

-Crackle lacquer combined with

-Chrome and steel

BAUHAUS_____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

- Began life in 1919

- Founded by Walter Gropius from the Werkbund movement, which sought to integrate art and economics, and to add an element of engineering art

- Combining the Weimar Art Academy, and the Weimar Arts and Crafts School

- Born into a world between wars, yet its influence still manifestly at work today

- Questions that were raised and still being asked with the same urgency:

•About how art and craft should be taught

•About the nature of good design

•About the effects buildings have on the people who live in them

- It signified a new trend, its own name meaning “The Style”

- Consisted of reducing forms to their basic elements – line, plane and primary colour

- Essential characters include:

•Piet Mondrian

•Theo Van Doesburg

•Bart van der Leck

•Gerrit Rietveld

- Rejected all forms of unnecessary decoration

MODERNISM_____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

1914 - 1939

- The theory of modern design was deliberately simple as a response to the growing complexity of the world

- Modernist objects look very different to those that came immediately before them

- They have no ornament and no overt reference to historical style

- They tend to emphasize materials and processes to create objects with integrity that simplified and dramatized everyday life

POST MODERNISM_____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

1970 - 2000

-Originally meaning ‘later than modern’, the word “Post Modern” has been subject to many interpretations

- The term has at its heart a distrust of modernist theories and approaches to design as being impoverished in terms of visual language and restrictive in terms of meaning

POST MODERNISM_____________________________________________________________________________________________

_

MEMPHIS - 1980

- In 1980, the Memphis Group led by Ettore Sottsass rejected the principle of functional design and the rules of good taste, which was the cornerstone of the Modernism period

- They regarded design as being fashion, with outrageous styles appearing for a season then disappearing just as quickly
