Fredrik is The Big Hero in Arjeplog

Fredrik Westerlund has shown that nothing is impossible. When he discovered that his four-year-old son had cancer his grief and anxiety turned creative.

While at the hospital with Sebastian, Fredrik noticed that the Children’s Cancer Fund (Barncancerfonden) do invalu-able work for sick children and their families. He wanted to help and remembered that he had once talked about climbing mountains in the Top of Arjeplog Challenge. In order to raise money he challenged all his friends on social media to donate an amount for each mountain he managed to conquer.

But, one thing complicated matters. Fredrik has cerebral palsy and has a problem walking even on a level pavement. But thanks to his good friend Guido van den Berg and family members, he managed to climb four tops of Arjeplog collecting over 500,000 SEK in the process.

Fredrik’s incredible achievement has been much talked about and what he did is an inspiration for everyone.It is quite hard to find excuses to not walk to a top of Arje-plog when you think about what Westerlund has achieved.

A couple of weeks ago there was a big party at Kraja celebrating Fredrik and all the people involved.

He says that he feels very proud when he looks back at a summer of four summits and more than 500,000 SEK that was raised for The Children’s Cancer Fund.

Most of all, he is amazed by the generosity and commit-ment of the local people of Arjeplog and sees such strength and power in people coming together for a higher cause.

Britta continues as Mayor of ArjeplogSame mayor, fewer politicians in Arjeplog and a party without delegates. In September, general elections were held in Sweden, and in Arjeplog. Sweden got a new government and the prime minister, for now, is Stefan Löfven, of the Social Demo-cratic Party.

Britta F Jansson has felt that it is windy at the top, but once again she was elected as mayor.

Democratics lost its absolute majority but at last week’s council meeting the Centre Party and the Social Democrats formed an alliance to rule together. In the closed voting Britta won and will continue for her third period as mayor.

She says that the next four years will be exciting and many important decisions will have to be made. She has to live with the fact that she is ruling from a minority position, but she is sure it will work out well as there are many wise people in the other parties with whom she can cooperate.

Because Arjeplog has so few inhabitants, the number of members in the local municipal council was reduced from 31 to 21: Social Democrats 8; Vänsterpartiet (Left Party) 5; Centerpartiet (Centre Party) 5; Folkpartiet (the Liberals) 2 and Sweden Democrats 1.

The Sweden Democrats (a far right-winged, anti-immi-grant party) are viewed by many as a racist party. In Sweden they are now the third largest party and in Arjeplog they secured one seat in the council. As they do not have anybody to take that seat, it remains vacant. Most of the people who voted for this party seem to be afraid of openly supporting it.

‘Snow-Hotel’ opens soon in ArjeplogIglootel, a hotel made of snow, is being built at Kraja and will open in mid-January. They are using man-made snow as it is a better building material than natural snow. It is a big complex covering 400 m² and includes ten sleeping-igloos, two big event-igloos, one big bar-igloo, a hot tub and sauna area and a fireplace-, lounge- and reception igloo, according to Daniel Knab, FlyCar, who is in charge of the Iglootel.

Some years ago the hotel was built in Aborrträsk, east of Arvidsjaur and Daniel says there were many reasons for moving to Arjeplog, mainly the good cooperation with Silver Resort (Silverhatten,

Kraja, Silver Lodge) and others; Also, Arjeplog is much more central and has the infra-structure needed.

When the hotel opens on January 16th there will be many opportunities to visit. Knab explains that you can stay over or just go for a guided tour. The Iglootel and their partner Silver Resort are offering many activities for people in the car industry, the event industry, locals and private tourists.

Big balloons are used to shape the different parts of the Iglootel. The snow blower then sprays snow to form its foundation.

This & That...• last summer was one of the warmest in the history of Arjeplog. For weeks temperatures hovered between 20-30°C and the water in the lakes reached 25 °C.

• the mayor of Arjeplog, Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson is donating one of her kidneys to a friend. She has also posed nude (with her husband Stephan) in the famous Jutis-Calendar. More of this in coming issues of The Arjeplog Times, the first one will be out on January 9th.
