Johan’s high flying dreams are about to come true.

16-year-old Johan Sundström from Arjeplog always knew he wanted to be a snow-mobile professional in USA.

He has worked very hard to fulfil his dream and in March he is going over there again to take part in a kind of snow-mobile racing called Snow-cross. Johan will compete against the best drivers and thinks he has got a fair chance to do well.

“In Snowcross there is high speed, many curves, jumps and bumps. It is very demanding, but great fun”, he explains.

Snowcross is a fairly new sport, a mixture between snow-mobile racing and motocross racing.

Johan started to ride a snow-mobile when he was eleven years old. He has shown great determination to achieve his goal to be a pro in the States. He practises nearly every day at the cross course in the industrial area. He also spends a lot of time in the gym in

order to stay strong and fit. Johan has been so successful that he

has sponsors paying all his expenses. His main sponsors are his parents, Petter and Ann-Christine Sundström, owners of Hornavan Hotell, but lately others have noticed the youngster’s rapid progress.

The other day he got a new engine sponsored by the company Arctic Cat.

The engine is a two cylinder 600 cc two stroke delivering 160 bhp, which is more than enough to send the more than 150-kilo-sled flying high into the air.

His trip to the States as well as hotels, rental cars are all paid for by new sponsors.

This & That...• A few weeks ago, a female moose was walking over a bridge that crosses the Pite River. She panicked when some cars drove onto the bridge and jumped over the railing. She landed on the ice 20 metres below and died instantly.

• Last week the fire brigade was called onto the test tracks on Lake Uddjaur because a test car was on fire. The car was totally destroyed but no-one was hurt.

• Moose and reindeer meat can be thawed and frozen repeatedly without going bad. In fact moose meat will just get more and more tender.

Helena Johansson, from Viltbutik-en, says that the car testers do not believe her when she tells them that they can take frozen meat home with them. She adds, “They think I’m just saying this in order to sell the meat, but it is true”.

She says that some testers think that the meat will be ruined if it thaws before they get home.

In Lapland it is a well-known fact that reindeer and moose meat is very resilient to all kinds of bad treatment. That is why it is the preferred food for picnics and other outdoor activities.

Moose meat is generally quite tough, but it can be tenderised by thawing and freezing it a couple of times.

Helena shares some favourite recipes using local ingredients on page 4.

Johan told us that he doesn’t make any money, but he gets to do what he enjoys most. One day, maybe, he hopes to be able to make a living riding his sleds. It’s good to have a big brother to lend a helping hand. Carl Sundström

Parking Problem for Trucks Solved

“Present a problem to the locals of Arjeplog and they will find a solu-tion.”

This was the comment from our mayor, Britta F Jansson, when the men from Cold Spot Facilities, decided to clear some of their huge grounds in the industrial area. This was a response to the problem of finding a parking area for the trucks (See last week’s issue of The Arjeplog Times).

Being men of action, Magnus Holmgren and Rickard Larsson (Cold Spot Facilities and Räckesätt-erna) immediately took action when they heard about the problems for the truck drivers.

They said that for the time being they will allow the trucks to park there free of charge. However, they cannot provide any other service at the moment.

What is good in Arjeplog?I enjoy being in the north of Sweden again. I like the snow and the water in the tap is so good. The pace of life is slow.

What is bad in Arjeplog?There is very little entertainment on weekends. Why not arrange at least one good music concert during the winter testing season?

Music you like?Classic rock, jazz and I also enjoy listening to Indiepop.

What is important in life?For me and my family to be healthy. It is important to learn new things all the time.

Swedish husmanskost denotes traditional Swedish dishes with local ingredients, the classical every-day Swedish cuisine.

The word husmanskost stems from husman, meaning “house owner”, and the term was originally used for most kinds of simple countryside food.

Genuine Swedish husmanskost used mainly local ingredients such as pork in all forms, fish, cereals, milk, potatoes, root vegetables, cabbage, onions, apples, berries etc. Beef and lamb were not used very much.

Beside berries, apples are the most used traditional fruit, eaten fresh or served as pie, sauce, in cakes or muffins.

Some examples of Swedish husmanskost are pea soup (ärtsoppa), boiled and mashed carrots, potato and mashed turnips served with pork (rotmos med fläsk), boiled salmon (inkokt lax), fish balls (fiskbullar), meat balls (köttbullar), potato dumplings with pork (palt), potato pancakes (raggmunk), porridge (gröt), a fried mix of potato and meat (pytt i panna) and meat stew with onion (kalops).

Swedish HusmanskostSwedish cuisine tends to be

practical and sustaining but due to Sweden’s large north-south extent there are regional differences.

Historically, in the far north, meats such as reindeer, and other (semi-) game dishes were eaten, some which have their roots in the Saami culture, while fresh vegetables have played a larger role in the south.

Recently, Swedes have adopted some foreign influences, ranging from cabbage rolls to the pizza and cafe latte of today. Traditional husmanskost is now often mixed with a modern, gourmet approach.

A Lapland meal, with ingredients from this area and recipes from Helena. Give it a try.

Starter: toast with cold-smoked salmonIngredients: Toast, sliced cold-smoked salmon, chopped red onion, capers, cream, grated horse-radish, lemon, cocktail tomatoes, lettuce, butter.

Put lettuce on the toast. Add a lot of sliced salmon, and top it with onion, capers and lemon. Whip the cream, add the horseradish and pipe it on. Decorate with slices of lemon and tomatoes.

Main courSe: Grilled moose entrecôte with baked potatoes and vegetables.

MeAT: Cut the moose meat (about 200gr per person) in 3 cm thick slices. Pound the meat on one side (easiest if you put it into a plastic bag) until it is 2 cm thick. Marinate it for 1 or 2 days in the fridge. You can use a ready-made grill marinade or make your own. Helena’s favourite marinade: Mix the same amount of olive oil, wine vinegar and red wine. Add a little soya sauce and game-spices: juniper berry-rosemary-thyme-pepper-marjoram and grill spice (ready mix available at Viltbutiken in Arjeplog). Fry the meat in a very hot grill pan, for about 1-2 minutes on each side, add salt. Serve the meat with a dollop of butter or garlic butter.

POTATOeS: Rinse and dry the potatoes (choose ones that are the same size) but do not peel them. Cut them in half and put on a baking tray. Pour olive oil over them and then salt, pepper, oregano and garlic. Bake in the oven 200 degrees C for 20-30 minutes. Potatoes grow well in Sweden, and Mandelpotatis (almond-shaped potatoes) are grown in the north.

VeGeTABLeS: Rinse and cut vegetables such as aubergine, zucchini, tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, red onion and mix with oil, balsamic vinegar, soya sauce, salt and pepper. Bake in the oven 200 degrees C for 15-20 minutes. You can also grill the food on an outdoor grill, weather permitting.

Home: Arjeplog. I grew up here and have lived here all my life.

Occupation: I work at Harrys, the new restaurant/ pub as a waitress but I am still learning. I have worked in the hotel and restaurant business since I finished school 2 years ago, but that was mainly breakfasts and lunches. This is very different to waiting on tables and that is what I am learning now. My father Björn owns Granns Järnia, the hardware shop and I also work there sometimes.

Favourite food: I don’t really have a favourite food, perhaps fish.

Dream car: Lamborghini Gallardo, black. But it

probably isn’t very practical to have a car like that here in Arjeplog.

Present car: I don’t have my own car. I borrow my parents’ car when I need one.

Spare-time activities: Spend time with my friends, we listen

to music, talk, watch films. I like snow-mobiling in the winter and fishing in both summer and winter.

What’s good in ArjeplogIt is a small place and everyone knows everyone, which is both good and bad. The good part is the feeling of being safe and sheltered. I like the Nature, the landscape.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? The bad thing about Arjeplog being so small and everyone knowing everyone, is that some people assume things and gossip about others, which may not always be true.

Music you listen to?All kinds, perhaps not opera.I am a temperamental person and the music I listen to depends on my mood.

What’s important in life? Family and friends.It is important to enjoy whatever you are doing. I would like to travel, meet differ-ent people, see different things and develop as a person.

Car Spies now using Snow-mobiles!

The car spies are now using snow- mobiles to get close to the ice tracks.

Last Tuesday, some Opel car testers were surprised by car spy Robert Sandseth who managed to get pictures of their new Opel Astra (sport) prototype. They were on the Colmis circle on Lake Kakel and the car spy came on a snow-mobile.

The testers managed to get photos of the spy photographer before he drove off.

Be warned! Car spies can get to any lake track on a snow-mobile.

Last week Åse Sundström narrowly escaped the fire that destroyed her parents holiday cottage in Racksund 18 kms from Arjeplog. The only things she managed to rescue were two snow-mobiles that were parked outside the burning cottage.

We met Åse and her daughters, Linda, evelin and Vanessa, taking the snow-mobiles back to Arjeplog.

She said that she is so happy that her daughters were not with her on the night of the fire. It still feels terrible, she says, but believes in her motto on facebook: “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”.

Dangerous Tracks

Saved herself & snow-mobiles

A snow-mobile can go over thin ice in places where it is impossible to walk. If you want to take a walk stay on land.

Many lakes in Arjeplog are reservoirs for hydro-electric power plants along the Skellefte River. This time of the year, especially when it is very cold, a lot of electricity is used in Sweden and as a consequence a lot of water is let out. This in turn means that the ice on the lakes around Arjeplog becomes very treacherous.

The company SeU that maintains the dams are very worried that unknowing car testers might go for a walk and follow snow-mobile tracks that they see on the ice.

A speeding snow-mobile can drive over very thin ice and in fact even on open water. However, a snow-mobile track is absolutely no guarantee that the ice is strong enough for a person to walk on.

every year locals are anxious when they see car testers walking around on the lakes because the locals know that it can be very dangeous.

A usual question from car testers is where the shores of the lake start and end. In winter, all you see is snow. The answer is that if you see an area without any trees or buildings then it is a lake!

Around the town of Arjeplog there are lakes and rivers everywhere and these places are not recommended for strolling around. Rather stay on the roads and snow-mobile tracks (with a large red cross) in the forest.

The ice around Kraja is especially bad and can change from being strong to non-existent in a matter of hours.
