MESSIAH MESSENGER - APRIL 2016 PAGE 1
Dear Friends of the living Messiah,
I AM ALWAYS AMAZED when people who live as if there is no God suddenly blame God when
they face hardship. For instance: A young man whose life was going pretty well had a minor stove
fire in his apartment because he fell asleep. His reaction was to ask, "Why does God hate me?"
When life was going smoothly he never stopped to ask, "Why does God love me?"
If we take our own personal sinfulness and the nature of this fallen world seriously…
WHY DOES GOD LOVE YOU AND ME is the question. I have never heard a good answer to that
one. (If you have, please share it.) Since we have a 'down to earth' God, the best I can do is look at

'down to earth' examples of those who have loved me. And, I cannot explain why my parents loved me as they did. Come to
think of it, I cannot explain why I love my children as I do. And, now I am head-over-heels in love with a grandchild who is as
ridiculously self-centered as I was as a toddler.
IN TRAGIC SITUATIONS 'WHY' QUESTIONS TORMENT US AS CHRISTIANS. In anguish we turn to God and let fly with our
questions, our pain, and our anger. God is tough and can take it. When the storm subsides we may not have an answer to
our 'why' questions, but we do realize we have a God who knows about suffering, and we have a God who lovingly abides
with us through the storms and in the sunshine.
WE WILL NEVER FULLY UNDERSTAND GOD, BUT our heavenly Father loved us so much that He sent His only Son to this
broken world filled with broken people like us. Jesus took on the worst of this world and the worst of us, but still kept loving.
While I cannot tell you why God so loves this world--including you and even me--I hope to be forever thankful for that love.
We can keep asking, "Why God?", but we are more likely to find peace if we can pray…
"THANK YOU, GOD!" And, how about this for a prayer request to God, "Please show me ways I can express my gratitude for
your love"?
NEW! FAITH MATTERS is the title for a new offering beginning this Easter season at MLC. I will invite your questions on
matters of faith. Then I will seek to respond to those questions based upon God's Word to us. Watch for details, and think
about your questions…..Oh! And, one more thing…
THANK YOU for the privilege of serving as the Pastor of MLC. I continue to be surprised by the love you consistently give
me. I do not know 'why' you do that, but I am thankful and I want to show my gratitude by listening to God and to you.
Easter hope and joy!
Pastor Scott Peterson
God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood,
will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God
through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. --Romans 5:8-10

Community Outreach Update: by Jacquie Fry
Many thanks to all who donated blankets, jackets, and sweaters to First Stop this winter sea-
son. I watched the appreciation in the faces of my "helpers" as I delivered supplies to make their
lives easier. Need has not lessened, but the things needed have.
Blankets will be collected again beginning in September. Jackets and sweaters can still be used,
along with T-shirts and socks and underwear for both men and women. I learned that there are
almost as many women as men at First Stop at this time. Also needed are razors, deodorant,
hotel-size shampoo and soap, and papers supplies such as paper plates, towels or napkins, and
plastic forks and spoons.
Thank you for your continued care for the needy in our community.

A daughter, Amelia Kate, was born to Ryan and Samantha

A daughter, Rose Helen, was born to Paul and Anita Zomkow-
ski on March 3rd.

The Kit Ministry at Messiah was begun about 10 years ago. This mission led by Rhonda
Gaede has for the last 5 years given the most pounds of relief in our synod. The team
members are affectionately know as the “minions” and they meet each Thursday night
to assemble layettes, school kits, and personal care kits. New “minions” are always wel-
come! Other ways to help support the Kit Ministries outside of Thursday evening.
Shop at thrift stores and consignment sales for
baby items.
Donate unwanted fabric. it will either be used for school
bags or quilts. Fabric can be new or we can use old cur-
tains, tablecloths, shower curtains, etc. as well.
Buy soap for the baby care and personal care kits.
Sew or put strings in school bags at home.
Help with kit ministry fundraisers. Make a cash donation
with the notation Kit Ministry on your check or enve-
lope.
This month the Kit Ministry is having an April Showers soap
drive. Bath sized bars, 4oz or 5oz, are needed. A brand new
bar of soap lets someone present him- or herself with dignity,
keep hands clean and stay healthy. Place soap donations in the
basket in the Narthex. To get involved, or for questions, contact
Rhonda Gaede at [email protected]
Would you like to

Music Camp June 6 - 10
Music Camp is just three months away!
All children K-9th are welcome to enjoy
this week of music, drama, arts & crafts,
recreation and fun afternoon activities!
This year we will be learning the musical
“Lord, Use Me: the Adventures of Francis”.
St. Francis of Assisi is well known, particu-
larly for the Prayer of St. Francis and his
bond with and love for animals. But did
you know, according to legend, he helped
a small village with a troublesome wolf?
Or that he, in fact, visited the Sultan in
Egypt in order to have a Muslim/Christian
dialog about ending the Crusades? The musical explores how Francis welcomed being
used for God’s purposes and how, through God’s guidance, we can also be instru-
ments of peace in our world today.
The Camp is scheduled for June 6 – 10, with presentations at both worship services on
June 12. Cost is $95 (family plans and scholarships available). Invite your friends! In-
formation and register online at musiccamp.mlutheran.org or pick up a form at the
Welcome Center. Questions or to help (always welcome!), contact Lois Graff.
Music at Messiah
The Huntsville Master Chorale will be performing at the next Music at Messiah concert on
Sunday, April 24. "Let the Earth Sing" features music celebrating the earth and calling us
to be good stewards of its bounty. Texts for the music are drawn from Chief Seattle, the
Ute Nation, Thomas Merton, Emily Dickinson, e.e. cummings, and the late Dorothy
Diemer Hendry of Huntsville, among others. The Chorale commissioned several works
by J.D. Frizzell who is an emerging composer of international renown living in Memphis
and a work by Dennis Clements, a member of the Chorale. Collaborating with Arts
programs in the Huntsville/Madison County schools, several art teachers have under-
taken ojects to have their students create some visual arts pieces related to Earth
Day. Several of those artworks will be on display.

What will Messiah Lutheran Church and its congregation be
like in 10 years? What do you think it should be like? What will
it take to get there? What should we invest in now to get
there? Are there different actions and activities to pursue that
we aren’t doing now? These are the questions I pondered while
the Council put together the budget for 2016 which we voted
on last November. I didn’t have the answers to those questions
then, and I don’t have them yet.
I thought the best way to consider these questions was to put
together a group consisting of a cross-section of the congrega-
tion to consider these questions. My timeframe was to have a
plan by the time the Council considers a budget for next year.
So we asked 3 men and 3 women to work together to consider
these questions: older, younger, young families, grown chil-
dren, etc. - all different perspectives and needs from a church.
These six men and women met with many Messiah and com-
munity leaders to hear their views. They have completed an
excellent report that contained surprising conclusions and
perspectives on Messiah for all of us. But now the real work
begins - we need to make some choices about how to move
forward, and your help and participation is needed.
A summary of the
Long Range Planning Committee’s report is available at
www.mlutheran.org/long-range-planning
We will need to make choices about our future and which
paths to take together. The last time Messiah engaged in this
kind of long-range strategic planning was about 10 years ago.
You may have participated in the strategic planning group that
Ken Grant led then, which led the congregation in new direc-
tions. You will be hearing more in the near future about how to
become involved and give your opinion on which paths to con-
sider and decide upon. Please pray and think about Messi-
ah’s future, and what role you might play in that.

30 Hour Famine 2016!
Feb 26-27th, the Junior and Senior Youth participated in
World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. This was the 11th year Messi-
ah Youth have participated in this event. Combined 15 youth
and 4 adult leaders fasted from food for 30 hours
while participating in games and devotionals at
the church. Youth were encouraged to stay hy-
drated with water and juices throughout the fast.
The weekend concluded with Youth lead-
ing Sunday Worship under the banner of
Hope Sunday. Hope Sunday is another World Vi-
sion mission designed to promote child sponsor-
ship. Sponsoring a child enrolls them into World
Vision’s program to aid in food distribution, education,
healthcare, and community development. This gives a child a
hope and a future, all for only $39 per month.
Donations given during the 30 Hour was split between World
Vision and Lutheran World Relief.
