Annual Report 2012

Connecting with Our Evolving Audience

Dear Friend of CRNC,

Looking to the future is one of many responsibilities of a board of directors. In February, the CRNC Board of Directors, KUNC Staff and KUNC Community Advisory Panel met together to plan the strategic direction for CRNC. The outcomes of the process are exciting! We now have three strategic imperatives that will guide us as we move forward:

• Content: We will increase originated multi-platform content while maintaining/ growing audience.

• Community Engagement: We will enhance and encourage community engagement.

• Resource Management: We will manage resources to ensure the long-term sustainability of KUNC.

For me, the process was as important as the outcomes. I marveled at the passion and energy all of the participants have for KUNC; how rewarding it is to work with such a committed staff and board!

These strategic imperatives, I believe, demonstrate our commitment to respect our audiences, provide quality content and serve as an essential member of the community. As you reflect on KUNC’s accomplishments in 2012 in this annual report, I hope you will see how we have demonstrated that commitment. Have we inspired you to grow with us to an exciting future for media and radio?

On behalf of the board of directors, we are most grateful for your ongoing support and your generous gifts to KUNC, Uniquely Northern Colorado.

Most sincerely,

Julie Johnson Haffner, ChairCRNC Board of Directors

Dear Friends of CRNC,

Looking forward to 2013 and possibilities for the future I am thinking of two events from 2012 that offer perspective.

The first is the ongoing NPR coverage of events in the Middle East heard on KUNC. Known as the cradle of civilization, it is now the center of so much of what is of concern around the world. Daily we learn from the extraordinary coverage provided by Deb Amos, Kelly McEvers, Lourdes Garcia Navarro, Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson and others from this critical region. It is vital that we have a clear understanding of this complex region

At the same time I am thinking of the devastation Colorado experienced through the forest fires we faced this past summer. In particular, coverage of the High Park and Waldo Canyon fires reflected the growing community support we have enjoyed and the importance of team work. In the days, weeks, and months since the beginning of June, KUNC has been there to report on the immediate news and the continuing impact upon our community coming from this summer of devastation.

Looking to the future it is critical that public media like KUNC will have the resources to continue the vital programming we all depend upon. It will also be a time of change. The programming will remain at the core of our service. But we are entering an era where how you receive KUNC content is changing. Tablets, mobile phones, and the next invention mean you have new ways to receive the programming. Digital platforms mean we can share additional resources above and beyond the broadcast programming with you. Please know we look forward to continuing to serve you in traditional and new ways. At the same time, we want you to know how profoundly grateful we are for your continuing support.

Warm Regards,

Neil BestPresident & CEO

In some ways, radio has changed a lot in the more than 100 years since its invention. In other ways, it has stayed relatively the same. One of the biggest changes in radio is the delivery method – from crystal sets to table top radios to car radios to transistors to smart phones. These changes have led to a very portable media that you can take anywhere. One thing that has remained constant is the ability to use audio to tell stories, paint a picture for the listener and connect with our evolving audience.KUNC began broadcasting in 1967 as KCBL, a 10 watt radio station licensed to the Associated Students of Colorado State College. KUNC was the first public radio station in Colorado to utilize a series of translators to extend programming services to the rural plains and mountain communities of Northern Colorado. We currently have five stations and fourteen translators delivering a unique mix of thought-provoking and intelligent programs that inform and entertain curious listeners from Julesburg to Steamboat Springs and Fort Collins to Salida.

KUNC continues to evolve and identify occasions to cultivate the mind and spirit, to inform, inspire and entertain, and to strengthen community. The growth in digital media impacts how we deliver our programs, but it does not change our desire to offer quality content that presents different perspectives. Due to technology, the world has become smaller. We have listeners and members from throughout the United States and across the globe. Our challenge is to engage them as part of the KUNC community. In order to accomplish these things, we need to manage our resources to ensure our long-term sustainability.

Delivering Thought-Provoking and Intelligent ProgramsKUNC staff is constantly assessing our current line-up and looking for opportunities to expose our audience to stimulating and insightful programs. Several new programs made their debut on KUNC in 2012: Radiolab, which blurs the lines between science, philosophy and human experience and The Spotlight, which highlights some of the best independently produced documentaries along with locally produced features. We used The Spotlight to showcase Live@Swallow Hill, KUNC’s monthly broadcast of concerts recorded at Denver’s Swallow Hill Music Association. Among the artists featured were the Grammy-nominated Lumineers, George Winston, the Wood Brothers and many others.

Continuing our mission not only to entertain, but to educate, KUNC once again presented Seminars at Steamboat - discussions of important public policy issues led by nationally known experts. Featured speakers in this year’s series included Robert Reischauer on Adjusting to America’s New Fiscal Reality: Why This Time It Really Is Different; John Pomfret’s lecture Insights From A China Watcher; and Ambassador Christopher Hill discussing the challenges and opportunities in foreign policy after the election. Past recordings of Seminars at Steamboat broadcasts are available at kunc.org

KUNC’s reporters were frequent contributors to NPR’s network news programs this year, as national news events took place in our backyard. The High Park Fire literally occurred in our own backyard when it reached our main antenna located at Buckhorn Mountain, and we lost power and the ability to reach 50 percent of our audience for over two weeks. KUNC reporters Grace Hood, Nathan Heffel and Kirk Siegler shared first-hand and in-depth stories on the impact of one of Colorado’s worst fire seasons on our listeners and neighbors.

Colorado’s status as a swing state brought numerous campaign visits to Northern Colorado by the presidential and vice presidential candidates. KUNC reporters presented the unique human voices of Northern Colorado to the presidential election.

When the tragic shootings occurred at an Aurora movie theater, KUNC reporters were there to offer local perspective and the quality reporting that KUNC listeners hear regularly.

And KUNC’s reporting again garnered regional and national recognition, highlighted by Grace Hood’s third consecutive national Edward R. Murrow award. Grace was recognized in the Investigative Category for a report examining a for-profit company that oversees the day-to-day operations at the state’s largest public online school.

Engaging with our CommunityKUNC believes in building strong communities by connecting with our audience in a variety of ways. Listeners experienced voices and perspectives from members of our community that we don’t often hear. During June KUNC introduced the voices of inner city teens as part of our Youth Radio Project. Each Wednesday, contributions from students at Arrupe Jesuit Academy in northwest Denver were featured. The Youth Radio Project is part of collaboration with the Denver non-profit Lighthouse Writer’s Workshop, with a goal of teaching teens of all walks of life how to become better writers and speakers

Ira Glass made his first appearance in Fort Collins with a visit to the Lincoln Center in October. Fans had a chance to visit with Ira at a pre-show reception, and a nearly sold-out crowd heard him describe the process of finding and producing stories for This American Life.

Representatives of area non-profits, as well as the funding community, attended the screening of Saving Philanthropy-Resources to Results at Loveland’s Rialto Theater. KUNC and Rocky Mountain PBS teamed with area Community Foundations to present the film, which profiles diverse social service organizations, and highlights the role that forward thinking funders play in the process of achieving measurable outcomes.

KUNC gave away tickets to theaters across the state for This American Life’s live cinema event in May. The show featured stories by Ira Glass, writers David Sedaris and David Rakoff, comic Tig Notaro and Snap Judgment host Glynn Washington, along with live music by OK Go, a short film by Mike Birbiglia, and dance by Monica Bill Barnes & Company.

To let Boulder listeners know that they can hear the station at both 91.5 FM and 102.7 FM, KUNC launched a spring-summer marketing campaign. Ads appeared on 10 Boulder buses from May through July, and they were estimated to reach 50% of Boulder’s population.

KUNC continued its tradition of being a community supported, community involved organization. Throughout the year, KUNC had a presence at community events, such as the Boulder International Film Festival, Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Fair, Greeley Blues Jam, Steamboat Wine Festival and Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.

In addition, KUNC and United Way of Weld County hosted a community blood drive benefiting the Banner Health North Colorado Medical Center Blood Donation Center, where we collected 24 unit of blood from 32 donors.

KUNC presented Big Bill Morganfield for the 26th annual Tuna Fish and Peanut Butter Concert. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we collected $2,600 and 297 pounds of food for the Food Bank for Larimer County and the Weld Food Bank.

Ensuring our Long-Term SustainabilityEfficient management of resources is critical to the long-term success of any organization, and KUNC is no exception to this principle. This past year, we made advances in the management of our financial resources, technological resources and human resource.

Over the past four years, KUNC experienced a 25% growth in operating revenue. Specifically KUNC placed an emphasis on growing the number of sustaining members, individuals who contribute to KUNC every month. Currently, 4,400 sustaining members contribute $60,000 a month to KUNC, which provides a consistent monthly cash flow. 2012 was a banner year for vehicle donations. We received over $60,000 from the donation of 138 vehicles – from a 1957 Willy Wagon to 1994 Jayco Pop-Up Camper.

KUNC invested in technology to improve the sound of our music. Thanks to a grant from the Paul and Amy Hach Charitable Foundation, we digitized our music library. We now have 4,000 titles available to our music hosts.

KUNC was selected as one of eight NPR member stations to participate in an 11 week intensive training funded by the Knight Foundation. This training provided KUNC staff with assistance on multimedia storytelling, writing for the web and the role of social media in news gathering. As a result, we increased the presence of KUNC stories on a variety of digital platforms.

KUNC enhanced our on-air presence through the addition of two new staff positions. Nathan Heffel joined KUNC as a reporter/host in December 2011, and Benji McPhail joined the staff in June 2012 as the music director.

Like many nonprofit organizations, KUNC relies on the generosity of volunteers to help us fulfill our mission. We have an active 13 member Board of Directors who meets regularly to guide the strategic vision of KUNC. In addition, we have a wonderful group of volunteers who answer phones during our on-air membership drives, and RSVP provides us with volunteers who assist with monthly mailings to members. The collective efforts of these individuals help us stay connected to our evolving audience.
